Homewood Store’s 125th Anniversary to be Highlighted by the Homewood Historical Society on Oct. 14 It has been a mainstay of Homewood business since 1970. While Homewood residents are familiar with Van Sipma’s Jewelers at 2011 Ridge Rd., the story of Van Sipma’s business began 70 years earlier in Roseland where the family’s initial store operated until 1980. Ashley Van Sipma will recount the family’s long tradition of providing fine jewelry and building trust with its generations of customers. The Van Sipma’s story will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the monthly meeting of the Homewood Historical Society at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Following a short business meeting at 6:00 p.m., Ashley will share her family’s history. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served.

FSSA estimates that over 58,000 HIP members are currently not in compliance with pending HIP Work Requirements. The Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) estimates that more than 58,000 Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) members may not currently be in compliance with — or exempt from — the HIP Work Requirements that will begin January 1, 2027. This figure reflects the most recent data available and underscores the urgent need for members to review their status to avoid losing coverage. Beginning January 1, 2027, FSSA will enforce work requirements for new applicants and existing HIP members. These requirements reflect a balanced, values-driven approach: pairing compassion with responsibility, and ensuring that access to healthcare is supported by work, job training, education, or qualifying community engagement activities. To ensure members are aware of what they need to do to keep their coverage, FSSA is conducting a statewide, multi-channel communications effort that began in June 2026. This outreach included notifications to more than 500,000 HIP members, partner communications, social media messaging, listserv alerts, and eight inperson town halls across Indiana, with additional town halls planned. These efforts were designed to help every HIP member clearly understand the steps needed to remain compliant. “We are sharing this information to strongly encourage HIP members to take personal responsibility for their coverage. Please review the HIP Work Requirements at myfssa.in.gov, set up a Benefit Portal account if you don’t already have one, and use the pre-screening tool to determine if HIP Work Requirements apply to you,” said Mitch Roob, FSSA Secretary. “Our goal is for every eligible HIP member to do what’s necessary to keep their coverage.” What Are HIP Work Requirements? To stay eligible for HIP coverage, members and applicants must complete certain activities each month, known as HIP Work Requirements. These activities include: • Working at a job • Attending school • Participating in an apprenticeship • Joining a work program • Volunteering in the community To meet HIP Work Requirements, you have three options: • You can combine any of the listed activities— such as working, volunteering, participating in a work program, or an apprenticeship— to reach a total of at least 80 hours each month. • Alternatively, you can fulfill the requirement by attending school or an apprenticeship at least halftime, without needing to track hours. • Meet the monthly income threshold by earning $580 or more in the month or are a seasonal worker with an average monthly income of $580 over the prior six months. This flexibility allows you to mix and match activities and income or simply attend school/apprenticeship
half-time to maintain your HIP coverage. Who must meet HIP work requirements: Adults enrolled in HIP must meet the work requirements if all of these are true (absent any exemptions): • Are ages 19-64 • Are not pregnant • Are not enrolled in or eligible for Medicare HIP Work requirements exemptions: HIP members do not have to meet the work requirements for a month if, for at least one day that month, you: • Are under 26 and were formerly in foster care. • Are a member of a federally recognized Tribe. • Are a parent or caregiver of a child age 13 or younger. • Are a caregiver of a person with a disability. • Are a veteran with a total (100%) disability rating. • Are pregnant, or it has been 12 months or less since your pregnancy ended. • Are in jail or prison or were released in the last 90 days. • Are following the work rules for SNAP or TANF. • Are in a drug or alcohol treatment program. • Are medically frail or have special medical needs. This includes: • Being blind or having a disability. • Having a substance use disorder. • Having a serious mental health condition • Having a serious physical, intellectual, or developmental disability. • Having another serious or complex medical condition. • Other exemptions may also apply.

RICHARD ZEKVELD The arrival of Fall sparks diverse reactions. Many declare Fall their favorite season. There is nothing quite like the breathtaking brilliance of Fall colors against a blue sky, enjoyed in the fresh air on a sunny day. And how about cozy campfires on crisp Fall nights? In addition, pumpkin-spice products are available everywhere. Others dread the coming of Fall. A friend of mine calls Fall, “Summer on hospice.” It’s where summer goes to die, along with the vibrant green things it produces. Days get shorter. Nights get longer. Brilliant leaves fall, leaving skeletal trees. Crisp turns to cold. For many, melancholy sets in with the coming of Fall. Whether you dread or delight in the arrival of Fall, seasonal change invites us to direct our attention to the God who does not change. After destroying a toxic world in The Great Flood, God said to Noah and his family, “While earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat,
summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22, ESV). With these words, God promised to preserve the current created order, along with its daily and s easonal rhythms, until Christ returns to renew creation. Against the backdrop of these rhythms, the good news of Christ goes out, inviting us to turn from our sin and trust in Jesus Christ to redeem us from all our sin and brokenness in this turbulent, chaotic, and everchanging world. Thanks to Christ, God hears his children pray, “Change and decay in all around I see. O, Thou who changest not, abide with me.” * Amid changing seasons, let’s anchor our faith in our unchanging God and his promises. In Christ, he will renew us and all creation forever. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org * Henry F. Lyte. Abide with Me, stanza 2.

Each October, National Book Month allows us to celebrate and expand our love of reading. As the warm temperatures start to leave us for the winter, it’s the perfect time to put on some cozy slippers, have a cup of tea (or wine) and curl up on the couch with a good book. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of everyday life and forget to enjoy the little things. Many of us put our relaxing hobbies like reading on the backburner, but this month, pick up a few new books and make time to read them. It’s a great hobby to get into.

Sandra A. (Shelby) Schill, age 84, late of Dyer, Indiana, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, September 28, 2026 after brief at home care coordinated with Hospice of the Calumet Area. Loving sister of James G. Shelby. Devoted aunt of Nancy (Shelby) Arendt, Melinda (Kevin) Bendle, and Daniel (Jocelyn) Shelby. Greataunt of Hope Meierkort, Margaret and Elisabeth Bendle, and Sophia, Cailyn, Wesley, and Jessie Shelby. Sandra was born on September 27, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Angeline (Duda) and James L. Shelby. She spent most of her adult life as a resident in Lansing, Illinois before moving to Dyer, Indiana shortly before her retirement. Sandra worked for over 40 years at Sherwin-Williams in Chicago and, during that time, made life-long friendships which she treasured. Through her move to Dyer 24 years ago, many neighbors also became cherished friends. Sandra stayed connected to the people in her life and often maintained relationships through recurrent dinners and breakfasts. She looked forward to these and was known by name at several local restaurants for being a regular. Sandra kept in contact with those
who were away through phone calls, and she was determined to keep up with technology so she could email and text. In one of her last conversations, Sandra reflected that the friendships in her life were her greatest achievement. She said they were more important than education, career, or success and the most meaningful part of her life. Sandra was a loyal and generous sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. To have a relationship with her meant that she was there for you when you needed anything. Those who knew her mourn her passing. She will be deeply missed. She requested that no service be held and, in honoring her wishes, interment will be private. The family is being assisted by Smits Funeral Home in Dyer, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be given to William J. Riley Hospice House in Munster, Indiana or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, both of which she supported regularly.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We paid off our $150,000 mortgage balance recently. The houses in our area are on the market for between $320,000 and $390,000. We were told by one of our neighbors that a few other neighbors are upset with us for doing this, because it dropped the value of the homes in our area. Is this true? Answer: No. If a home sells for $500,000 it means the owner gets $500,000 in cash at closing whether the home is owned debt-free or the sellers owe up to their eye brows. The $500,000 is then reduced by closing costs, lien pay-offs, etc. Home values are determined by supply and demand. Easy financing and low rates create additional demand by expanding the pool of potential buyers. That a home is free and clear of all debt does not mean it is less valuable or more valuable in the marketplace. Question: I’m interested in purchasing a home that’s priced 9 percent above others in the neighborhood. The seller feels the price is justified since they installed a lot of upgrades.
I submitted an offer that’s almost 2 percent higher than the neighborhood average price, and it was rejected. The home has been on the market for 122 days, is well kept and very nice, but I cannot see how it justifies nearly a 10 percent margin in price over the average. I want to offer the sellers a fair price for the home, but not overpay. What can I do? Answer: You are overthinking this. Real estate sale prices are established by informed buyers and sellers. If you don’t want to pay the seller’s price and the owner will not accept your offer, logic and reason are irrelevant -- the house won’t sell and you must look elsewhere. Don’t be mislead by statistics. Upperbracket homes, as one example, often take months to sell -- and sometimes longer. Thinking of Selling?
