Riverdale Park Dist. Celebrates Opening of New Creative Spaces Through Artspark

RIVERDALE, Ill. – On Saturday, August 29, The Riverdale Park District celebrated the opening of new creative spaces through ARTSpark, a communityfocused creative placemaking initiative designed to bring art, wellness, storytelling and community engagement together in Riverdale Park. The initiative includes the newly developed ARTSpark Creative Art Center with a Creator Lab and Podcast Studio, and a community garden, along with community-created artwork and improvements that bring new opportunities for residents to create, connect, learn and contribute. The project was supported through the Cook County Arts Creative Placemaking grant program, a Cook County initiative implemented in partnership with LISC and Arts Alliance Illinois. Through ARTSpark, the Riverdale Park District is transforming a community asset into a place where residents of all ages can participate in creative expression, hands-on learning and community life. “It has been wonderful to see this project move from an idea into something the community can experience and enjoy,” said Mari Barnes, Grant Manager for Riverdale Park District. “I’m especially proud of the gardens and the way they provide space where people can come together and enjoy both health benefits and beauty. Seeing all of the pieces of the project connect makes the work that went into getting us here truly rewarding.” The Riverdale Park District marked the project milestone with ARTSpark: The First Spark, a community celebration that invited residents, artists, partners and local leaders to explore the new Creative Art Center and participate in art, wellness and family activities. The celebration included an official ribbon cutting and open house of the ARTSpark Creative Art Center, community art displays, creator and maker activities, a community garden showcase, interactive drumming and opportunities for residents to learn about future ARTSpark programming. “ARTSpark started with a simple idea: creativity can change the way people experience their community,” said Kimberly Haynes, Recreation Supervisor for Riverdale Park District. “We wanted to create spaces where residents could make something, grow something, tell their stories and see their own contributions reflected around them. The First Spark celebrates what we’ve started, but more importantly, it represents what we believe can grow from here.” ARTSpark combines physical improvements with opportunities for residents to actively participate in the spaces being created. The ARTSpark Community Garden provides a setting for gardening, environmental education, wellness and community connection, while the Creative Art Center creates space for art and creative

programming. The project also includes opportunities for community-created artwork, an artist gallery, community mural areas and an art pavilion for creative programming and workshops. The Creator Lab gives local youth and community members opportunities to contribute to creative projects for Park District spaces, while the Podcast Studio provides a platform for residents to tell stories, share ideas and document the voices and experiences of the community. Additional improvements, including restroom upgrades, are designed to improve accessibility and support increased community use of the site. “We’re proud to help the Riverdale Park District continue finding new ways to bring valuable opportunities to our community,” said Commissioner and Board President Betty Ervin-Robinson. “Our role is to support a strong team, give them room to develop good ideas and help make sure they have the resources and partnerships to move those ideas forward. ARTSpark is a great example of what can happen when that trust, creativity and community partnership come together.” “Cook County Arts is a transformative program that encourages residents to unite and engage in creative projects that uplift the unique spirit and stories of their community,” said Cook County Bureau of Economic Development Chief Xochitl Flores. “This investment in Riverdale Park and ARTSpark Creative Art Center will bring inspiration and opportunity to creators of all ages while establishing a stronger, more vibrant Riverdale community.” ARTSpark is also planning continued programming that connects creativity with wellness, volunteerism, storytelling, environmental stewardship and community partnerships. Through the initiative, the Riverdale Park District aims to create an evolving network of spaces, programs and experiences that encourage residents not simply to attend activities, but to help shape the life of their community. Project team members and community partners include the Riverdale Park Foundation, Sertoma Star Special Recreation Services, UCAN, Urban Male Network (UMN), The ACE Project, M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment, Brian Gay, formerly with Youth Guidance’s Digital Art and Graphic Design programs; and Lori Bortnick, artist and educator. Cook County Arts is a pilot initiative of the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development made possible by $5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding. The Cook County Arts Creative Placemaking grant program is implemented in partnership with LISC and Arts Alliance Illinois. With a focus on suburban Cook County, Cook County Arts provides support for artists and nonprofit arts organizations, and seeks to mitigate the lingering negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen the suburban arts sector in the long term. Cook County Arts Creative Placemaking grants are supporting community-driven projects throughout suburban Cook County that integrate arts, culture and design into broader efforts related to public space, economic development, education, neighborhood identity and community engagement. Unveilings are already underway and will continue throughout the fall of 2026. For more information about Cook County Arts Creative Placemaking, visit cookcountyarts.org. Y? WHY NOT!

Write a Love Letter by Janice R Newman There are many times in life when we want to show gratitude, appreciation, and love to the people who mean the most to us. Still, saying how we truly feel isn’t always easy. Sometimes we say, “I love you,” but we don’t explain why. My husband and I have written love letters to each other over the years to express why we love and appreciate each other. These letters are precious to us. Writing a love letter can help you put your feelings into words and give someone a message they can keep. Love comes in many forms. There’s love for family, love between friends, romantic love, and the unconditional love of God. Each type of love is important. Love received and expressed shapes and influences who we are. A love letter doesn’t have to be long or fancy. It can be one page or several pages. What matters most is that it’s sincere and comes from the heart. A handwritten letter can feel warm, personal, and timeless. It gives you time to think about what someone means to you and why you’re thankful to have them in your life. You can write a love letter to a parent, child, sibling, or another family member. Tell them what you appreciate about them. Thank them for the lessons they taught you, the sacrifices they made, or the times they supported you. A letter can also help repair a relationship, offer forgiveness, or strengthen a family bond. You can write a romantic love letter to your spouse or significant other. Write in the letter the qualities you admire in them, special memories with them

you treasure, and ways that person has made your life better. Sometimes feelings that are hard to say out loud are easier to express in writing. Ephesians 5:25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” A letter to a close friend can also be meaningful. Let your friends know how much their support, kindness, and friendship mean to you. Friendship love is often felt deeply but not always spoken. You can even write a love letter to God. It can be a simple prayer on paper. Thank Him for His blessings, sharing your struggles, and reflecting on how your faith has helped you. 1 John 4:16 reminds us, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” Finally, consider writing a love letter to yourself. Appreciate how far you have come. Recognize your growth, forgive yourself for mistakes you made, and encourage yourself to keep moving forward. Loving others is important, but learning to value and care for yourself matters too. Love letters are more than words on paper. They’re reminders of love, gratitude, forgiveness, friendship, faith, and connection. Think about the people who’ve made a difference in your life, and don’t forget yourself. Take time to write the words that might not be said. The best gift may simply be your love in words. So, write a letter to someone today. Y? Why Not! Drop a comment on Facebook & Watch the show on YouTube https://www.facebook.com/ ywhynotshow/

Illinois’ 8 interstate visitor information centers to close at month’s end By MAGGIE DOUGHERTY Capitol News Illinois mdougherty@capitolnewsillinois.com CHICAGO — Illinois’ eight state-run visitor information centers, located within rest areas at interstates around the state, will be closing by the end of the month. “The role of the State’s visitor information centers has evolved significantly over the past couple of decades as the ways visitors plan and access travel information have changed,” the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity told Capitol News Illinois in a statement. “For example, the centers used to provided services such as booking hotel rooms for tourists, while that is no longer a need of many travelers.” The closures were independent of financial pressures, according to the agency. Operating the centers cost the state approximately $1.6 million per year. The rest areas where the centers are located will continue operating, and other services will be uninterrupted, the department added. The closures do not extend to independently operated visitor information centers by local governments or tourism organizations.

where to stop. She considers the closures a loss, especially for older adults. “They’re alienating the older adults because they want everyone to go towards looking everything up online, and that’s fine to a point,” Bauer said. They had a computerized touch screen map with information available, too, she said. “That helped, but it wouldn’t tell you why should you go to this restaurant and why should you go see this, and that’s when you needed someone there,” Bauer said.

Nearby shelves for brochures and tourism magazines were empty. (Capitol News Illinois photo by Maggie Dougherty) _______________________________

The state did not publicly announce the news but confirmed the closures to Capitol News Illinois when asked for comment. The 20 employees who staffed the centers were all employed through third parties, not directly by the state. Those roles included a mix of full-time and parttime positions. Nancy Bauer used to work at the Homestead visitor information center in Hamel, where she and her colleagues would greet visitors as they came through the doors, offering them brochures and magazines. But more importantly, she said they could give advice about

Her colleagues could point visitors to the best restaurant two hours away, Bauer added. They would also educate travelers about historic events, like the state’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of Route 66. Bauer, 62, majored in tourism. She worked at the Homestead center on Interstate 55 for around a year and a half before she had to stop working because of worsening symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. She said she didn’t understand why the state was closing the centers, which she felt helped many travelers — especially after the state has recently broken its own records for visitor tourism. Tourism generated over $88 billion in economic impact for Illinois last year, with 115 million visitors spending over $50 billion. “Why get rid of something that’s not only helping the consumer, but helping to bring money into your state?” Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service that distributes state government coverage to hundreds of news outlets statewide. It is funded primarily by the Illinois Press Foundation and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

JOSH BOOTSMA Perhaps we’re too hard on “Doubting Thomas.” Thomas was one of Jesus’ disciples, and, upon hearing of Jesus’ resurrection, insisted on seeing and touching Jesus before he would believe He was alive. Yes, Thomas should have believed in the first place, but that sin should not define him. Jesus’ response to Thomas’ doubt is recorded in John 20:24-29. Jesus tells Thomas to touch his hands and feel his pierced side, exactly what Thomas said he needed to believe. Jesus doesn’t curse Thomas for his doubt — he responds with specific assurance! Jesus doesn’t define Thomas by his doubt, and He doesn’t define you by your doubt either. Far too often, Christians equate doubt with unbelief. But they’re not the same. Doubt says “I have questions.” Unbelief says, “I know all the answers.” Doubt says, “I’m open to discovering more about God.” Unbelief says, “I’m closing myself off to God.” Doubt can be God’s way to refine you, to bring you to a fuller understanding of Himself.

19th Century poet Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote a poem called “Doubt and Faith” telling the story of a man who challenges the notion that doubt is “Devil-born.” Some of the poem is included below. May it bless you address your own doubt in a healthy way: Perplext in faith, but pure in deeds, At last he beat his music out. There lives more faith in honest doubt, Believe me, than in half the creeds. He fought his doubts and gathered strength, He would not make his judgment blind, He faced the spectres of the mind And laid them: thus he came at length To find a stronger faith his own; And Power was with him in the night, Which makes the darkness and the light, And dwells not in the light alone. Balance Your Plate with Produce, Protein and Whole Grains (Feature Impact) Making health-conscious decisions with your at-home menu doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require commitment and a little more foresight at the grocery store. Simple adjustments to overall eating patterns, like building your plate around produce, powerful proteins and whole grains, can encourage better health. Nutritious meal-planning can be easy, affordable and delicious - and it all starts with a little balance. Consider this advice from the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good initiative, nationally sponsored by the Egg Nutrition Center, to adequately round out a healthy plate. Fill Half Your Plate with Fruits and Veggies Loaded with nutrients, fresh produce is a perfect place to start each plate. Fill about half your plate with combinations of bananas, strawberries, blueberries, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots and more of your favorites. To boost variety with each meal, look for fruit and veggie blends or step out of your usual routine and try something new. Grocery tip: Frozen fruits and veggies are often cheaper and just as delicious as their fresh counterparts. It’s frozen right after it’s picked, locking in freshness for a longer shelf life. Just be sure to avoid products with added salt or sugar. Carve Out a Quarter of the Plate for Powerful Proteins Healthy food isn’t just fuel. It should be easy and nourish you, too. Look for versatile solutions that provide a protein power-up like skinless chicken breast, no-salt-added beans, low-sodium tuna, tofu or eggs. High-quality protein from foods, along with a balanced diet and regular exercise, can help support the muscles in your body. Eggs are an example, along with lean animal protein and some plant-based proteins. According to the American Heart Association’s guidelines, healthy people can include up to one whole egg daily, and up to seven per week, as part of a hearthealthy diet. For older adults with normal cholesterol, two eggs per day is acceptable.

Eggs deliver both protein and choline, nutrients that help support growing brains and bodies, especially early in life. In fact, many Americans don’t get enough choline, a critical nutrient for supporting brain development, memory and mood. Grocery tip: Stock up on proteins that offer both versatility and affordability, helping you cook multiple meals per week without putting a dent in your wallet. Eggs are a perfect example as they can be used at any meal, not just breakfast - try them in wraps or omelets in the morning, hard-boil them to go with a lunchtime salad or add to a frittata at dinner. Save a Corner for Whole Grains Finally, fill that last quarter of the plate with readyto-go whole grains, many of which provide dietary fiber that can support a healthy heart and healthy digestion. Conversely, most refined grains contain little or no fiber. Examples of whole grains include barley, brown rice, corn, oatmeal, rolled or steel-cut oats, popcorn, quinoa, sorghum and wild rice, along with products labeled “whole grain” or “whole wheat” like bread or pasta. Grocery tip: Look for whole grains that can make mealtime a cinch. Corn tortillas, instant oats and even popcorn can help you create nutritious plates and better-for-you snacks with the snap of your fingers. Try keeping packets of pre-cooked brown rice on hand to bulk up favorite dishes or toss with leftovers to round out a healthy plate. Visit Heart.org to discover more nutrition guidance for heart-healthy meals. Sidebar: 3 Tips to Complement a Healthy, Balanced Plate Nutrition isn’t just about what’s on your plate - it’s also about what’s next to it and how much is on it. Pair a balanced meal with this advice to help take healthy eating to the next level. Stay Hydrated If it’s not already a habit, add a glass of water to each meal. Staying hydrated helps your heart pump blood throughout the body, get rid of waste and regulate

body temperature. While water is the best source of hydration, water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables can also play a role. Watch Portion Sizes Pay attention to suggested servings from your favorite food groups. For example, one slice of wholegrain bread, 1/2 cup of cooked pasta and two ounces of cheese (about the size of a domino) are the suggested serving sizes for these popular foods. You can serve and eat smaller portions by: * When cooking at home, offer the proper serving size to each family member then put extra food away for leftovers. * When dining out, skip appetizers and split your meal with a friend or partner. * Avoid eating while watching TV or at your computer. It may be harder to control how much you’re eating if you’re not paying full attention. * Mindfully measure out your snacks - even fruits and veggies - into appropriate portions before serving instead of helping yourself directly from the bag or box. Limit Salt While sodium supports vital functions like controlling your body’s fluid balance, excess sodium in your bloodstream pulls water into the blood vessels, increasing the amount of blood inside them and thus increasing blood pressure. More than 70% of the sodium people eat comes from packaged, prepared and restaurant foods due to salt added for flavoring, stabilizing, preserving and reducing bacterial risk, according to the American Heart Association. Cutting back on sodium can help reduce the rise in blood pressure that occurs as you age, even if you don’t have high blood pressure now. It may also help reduce the risk of heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease and more. Try cooking more meals at home where you can control sodium intake, flavoring foods with herbs and spices instead of table salt and rinsing canned beans and vegetables to wash away excess sodium.

In the Northern Hemisphere, October ushers in fall like no other month. Its capital O shouts pumpkins and if the leaves haven’t turned, they soon will. Before the Julian and Gregorian calendars, October was the 8th month of the Roman calendar. Octo means eight in Latin. At the time, there were only 10 months. In 700 BC, Numa Pompilius added January and February to the calendar. This change more accurately reflected the length of a year on Earth. As a result, October became the 10th month on the calendar. While other months on the calendar have had days added and subtracted, October has always had 31 days.

Pritzker establishes AI cabinet amid calls for greater regulation By BEN SZALINSKI Capitol News Illinois bszalinski@capitolnewsillinois.com SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker is setting up a new group within state government to explore more regulations for artificial intelligence as calls grow across the country for new restrictions. Pritzker signed an executive order on Tuesday to establish an AI Cabinet made up of experts and representatives from several state agencies. The unpaid group, which will formulate policy proposals through 2027, will analyze and assess “the various risks posed by AI to the safety of Illinois residents and the critical infrastructure residents rely on.” It’s the latest move by Illinois to tackle state-focused AI regulation as the federal government continues to take a hands-off approach, even as industry insiders sound the alarm on the technology’s capabilities. A former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher alleged in an explosive social media post earlier this month that AI companies are building a tool that could become “out of control” and pose a threat to human existence by 2030. “Artificial Intelligence has enormous potential to transform our everyday lives, but when experts and industry leaders sound the alarm bell, urge us to slow down, and ask for guardrails, we should listen,” Pritzker said in a statement. The cabinet will formulate policies and procedures to protect Illinois residents and public assets like water systems, education and information systems from threats posed by AI. It will also analyze “emerging AI incidents and share lessons learned” from them. The advisory group will also make policy recommendations on risk management and assess the feasibility, timeframe and any other challenges for implementing them. The cabinet will consider regulations tying data center incentives or operational approval to a company’s ability to meet safety, accountability

and transparency standards. It will also look into addressing strain on the energy grid from data centers, evaluating how state procurement and contracting practices can incorporate AI safety and accountability measures, and assessing if existing legal options are good enough to hold AI companies that cause harm accountable. Legislative action Illinois lawmakers have already taken steps to regulate AI. Priztker signed Senate Bill 315 in July, also known as the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, which increases transparency and accountability requirements for the largest artificial intelligence models — those that generate more than $500 million in annual revenue and are trained using massive computing power. It establishes new reporting standards for the possibility that the AI model could be used for large-scale harm, such as by helping create a chemical, biological or nuclear weapon or committing cyber-attacks. It also made Illinois the first state to require annual audits of AI. The law takes effect in 2028. Since the whistleblower came forward earlier this month, Pritzker has been aggressively calling on Congress to step in. “It should be among the top priorities, but don’t misunderstand, it is dangerous and it’s dangerous on the level of nuclear weapons,” Pritzker said on ABC’s Sunday morning news show. “So that’s why it needs to be an international endeavor. Pritzker has urged Congress to immediately begin holding hearings on AI safety and impose national standards. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We went looking at new construction models and were given several basement options. We are used to just one kind of basement. What’s the difference? Answer: Remember when a basement was a basement? Where creepy crawlers, high humidity and low light were common. The place where all unwanted things were stored because we didn’t want to dump them. Where shadows appeared ominous and the light bulbs were always burned out. The place where we always worried would seep water during a rain storm. These types are called standard basements. That’s all changed with the new basement designs. Even if a basement is not finished at the time of the build, an additional lower level gives a homeowner options of expanding their living space in the future. This expanded living space can really bring a home to life. Walkout basements have lots that are heavily sloped, but allow a home’s lower level to feel very similar to the other levels in the home. With full windows that brighten up the lower level and full access to the backyard, many home owners enjoy a home built on a walkout lot. One disadvantage to

a home built on a walkout lot is that although you can access the backyard from the basement, the main level’s backyard access is raised into the air and requires stairs to access the yard. Daylight basements provide a balance between walkout and standard basements. Homes that feature a daylight design can be built on a variety of land elevations. With full windows in the basement, home owners can use a lower level with a bit more creativity. Although the added light increases the visibility from a lower level basement, if your home is built on a daylight lot, the deck and backyard access from the main level will require stairs to get from an elevated deck down into the yard. Many home owners say the added light in the lower level and the way daylight windows can make a lower level feel more like other levels in the home, is worth the increased cost and having a raised deck.
