WEDNESDAY SEP. 23 Wednesday • September 23, 2026
IWPA Fall Conference Brings AI, Creative Writing, Publishing, and Theatre Production to South Holland SOUTH HOLLAND, IL — The Illinois Woman’s Press Association (IWPA) invites aspiring and experienced writers, authors, digital creators, artists, and playwrights to its Fall Conference, “From Prompt to Production: The IWPA Creative Lab,” on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 11:30 am to 3:30 p.m. at the South Holland Public Library, 16250 Wausau Avenue, South Holland, Illinois. The free event will offer a hands-on learning experience designed to help participants discover new creative tools, develop their talents, and explore ways to bring their ideas to life. With the theme “Create It. Publish It. Promote It.,” the conference will feature four presenters covering artificial intelligence, writing, book publishing, motivation, and theatrical production. Janice Newman, IWPA President, award-winning writer, author, and executive producer and host of the Y? Why Not! television show, will introduce practical applications of artificial intelligence for creating graphics, developing written content, and publishing books. Her presentation will explore how AI tools can assist writers and independent publishers throughout the creative process. Victor Gulley, founder of A Taste of Theatre and a digital creator, will demonstrate how artificial intelligence can assist with developing websites, creating social media posts, producing comics, and completing other digital projects. His presentation will focus on practical tools creators can use to expand their online presence. Shanita Akintonde, professor, author, and motivational speaker, will present an encouraging message about pursuing creative goals and overcoming obstacles. A four-time first-place winner in the 2026 IWPA Professional Communications Contest, and author of Front Porch Leadership.
Benaiah Link, playwright and producer with 1st Time Productions, will share insights from his award-winning stage play, Trauma Attraction. His presentation will address the challenges of producing and promoting theatrical productions, offering guidance for independent playwrights and producers seeking to bring their work to the stage. Unlike a traditional lecture-based event, the conference will emphasize practical learning and creative exploration. Participants will be introduced to ideas and resources they can apply to their own writing, publishing, digital media, and production projects. The workshop welcomes beginners and experienced professionals alike. Whether attendees hope to publish their first book, create a website, develop graphics, produce a theatrical performance, or discover new ways to promote their work, the conference will provide an opportunity to learn and connect with fellow creators. Y? WHY NOT!
What’s Hiding in Your Junk Drawer? An independent newspaper serving the area since 1957.
by Janice R Newman Everyone has a junk drawer filled with miscellaneous items such as dead batteries we refuse to discard, mystery keys that don’t seem to fit anything, or odd objects we can’t even identify. However, for some reason, we keep these items instead of sorting through what should stay and what should go. We promise ourselves that one day we’ll clean out that drawer, but we never do. Why do we hold on to things that won’t benefit us? That junk drawer is similar to the emotional clutter we carry throughout our lives but refuse to let go. Our hearts and minds become cluttered with past hurts, trauma, broken relationships, disappointments, anger, and painful memories. We carry these experiences like battle wounds that never heal. We keep shoving them deeper into our minds, hoping they won’t surface again, but they stay with us. So, how can we clean out our emotional junk drawers and live a free and healthy life? First, open the drawer and take inventory. What exactly have you been holding on to? You must be willing to examine what’s there, even when it’s painful. Perhaps it’s an argument from ten years ago, a friendship that ended badly, or a costly mistake you haven’t forgiven yourself for. You can’t address emotional baggage without identifying it. Write down the experiences that still trouble you. Next, identify the emotions associated with each situation. Is it anger, sadness, guilt, or resentment? Recognize your feelings. Second, determine what’s worth keeping. Just like those mystery keys, some items may still have a purpose. Not everything in the drawer belongs in the garbage. You must sort through it. The same applies to our experiences. Some painful situations teach valuable lessons. Perhaps a broken relationship taught you to establish healthy boundaries, or a disappointment encouraged you to pursue a different opportunity. Savor the wisdom, but release the bitterness. Keeping the pain doesn’t reinforce the lesson.

Third, stop collecting unnecessary junk. Don’t put it in the drawer. The minute you clean it, overnight it gets cluttered again. We do the same thing emotionally. Someone makes an unpleasant comment, and we replay it repeatedly. A disappointment occurs, and we allow resentment to grow. Ask yourself, “Is this worth my peace?” We must choose not to dwell on something we cannot change or benefit from. Fourth, learn to let go. Throw the junk in the trash. Forgiveness is an important part of healing. It doesn’t excuse someone’s behavior, forget what happened, or allow that person to hurt you again. Healing and establishing healthy boundaries are necessary and take time. Seek support from a counselor, pastor, or trusted friend. Turn to God through prayer for strength and guidance. You don’t have to work through painful memories alone. Finally, make room for something new and refreshing. Fill that newly available space with encouragement, positive experiences, and activities that bring you joy. Pray, journal, pursue a dream, reconnect with supportive people, or develop new friendships. Practice gratitude and appreciate each new day. Ecclesiastes 3:6 advices us that there is “...a time to keep and a time to throw away” (NIV). Apply that wisdom to both your physical and emotional junk drawers. Cleaning out your emotional drawer doesn’t erase the past or pretend it never happened. It allows us to not keep it within arm’s reach every day. Healing is obstructed when we continually replay it. Deciding what needs to be released, then take small steps towards being healthy. Why hold on to something painful that takes up valuable space when you could make room for something better to occupy your mind? Declutter your drawer, today. Y? Why Not! JOSH BOOTSMA Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” You’ve probably heard those words before, but I’m wondering if that promise has made its way to your hands. There’s two ways to hold our hands in life: palms up and palms down. Unfortunately, our tendency is to live life with our palms down. That’s a posture of reaching. Of grabbing. Of grasping. It’s a posture of control. It says I am in the driver seat of my life, and I’m gonna grip the steering wheel with white knuckles. That’s not what the promise of Jeremiah 29:11 is about. If you notice, there’s nothing we contribute to that promise. Our only response is to receive and accept. A godly posture is one with palms up. This is a posture of trust. It says,

“God, I cannot bring about good plans for my life the way you can. In fact, my very definition of what a good life is is probably different than yours. And so, I surrender.” God’s promise for your hope and your future is available today, through the blood of Jesus Christ. Have you surrendered to him fully? Have you accepted him with your palms open? That is the first step. The next step is to live your life with your palms up, receiving God’s good plan for your life, even if it might not be the same plan you would’ve made for yourself. His plan is better, because he is a good father, who loves his children dearly. Are you ready to receive? Josh Bootsma Director of Ministries Covenant Fellowship Church Cfcsh.org

Let’s talk. September 23 is Teal Talk Day and each year, over 249,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer worldwide. So, gather your friends, wear teal for a day out together and talk. Join a group of coworkers for lunch. Men are welcome, also. They have mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters at risk for ovarian cancer. They should have the Teal Talk, too! Since no standard screening exists for ovarian cancer, awareness gives us our best defense. The talk takes very little time. Have a Teal Talk over lunch. In that time, approximately 28 women will receive an ovarian cancer diagnosis. Source: nationaldaycalendar.com

Sadie, Tate, Margo, Bennett, and Easton. Dear brother of Christine Colvin, the late Jean (late Max) Johnson and the late William (Peggy) Colvin. Uncle of several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents William and Ellen Colvin. Fred Colvin lived his life for Jesus Christ and leaves a legacy of love, integrity, dedication, and Christian faith. Fred grew up accustomed to hard work at an early age. While still a young teen, a local general contractor saw his potential to be a hard worker and offered him a job. Fred’s diligent and precise work as a laborer developed into the skill of being an excellent bricklayer. The Korean War took Fred on the path of service to his country for a time, where he served in the Army as a cook and baker. Upon returning home, Fred continued his work as a bricklayer, and in 1963 he began his own masonry company. That company continues to thrive today into its second and third generations of family members. Fred married Laura De Young in 1953, and the newlyweds made Oak Glen CRC/URC their church home. Fred credited both Laura’s personal witness and the preaching of God’s Word heard at Oak Glen as the means that brought him to faith in Jesus Christ. Fred and Laura became an integral part of church life there, where Fred served as an Elder in the church, upholding biblical truth and showing loving support to members under his care. He also gave many decades of loving service to the Building and Grounds Committee of the church, ensuring that God’s house of worship was safe and beautiful. If they were out and about, he just had to drive through the church parking lot before going home just to make sure all was right! As a family man, Fred will be remembered for his selfless love, his deep faith, and his quiet and humble character. He always prioritized his Lord, his wife, and his family above selfish desires. The family cherishes that Fred and Laura demonstrated their love and support by joyfully attending every event possible that included their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. But the richest heritage he leaves to his family is his demonstration of his faith in and love for his Savior Jesus Christ through his speech, his family prayers, and his example of godly living. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, September 24, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the
funeral service at 6:00 p.m. at Oak Glen United Reformed Church, 2244 Indiana Ave. Lansing, IL with Dr. Paul Ipema officiating. There will be a time of coffee fellowship following the service. Interment Friday, September 25, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery – Elwood, IL with Rev. John Vermeer officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Smits Funeral Home – Dyer, IN. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We signed a contract to sell our Home contingent on the buyer getting a loan approved & closing it by a given date. The buyer did not get the loan & the deal was off. We started showing the house again, but have now found out that the buyers got financing through a different bank & they can close by the original deadline. Are we still obligated to close or can we change the contract to better ourselves? Answer: Wait a second. Go back to the part about the “deal was off.” Did the buyers agree the transaction was finished? Did they get their earnest money back? Or did they simply find a financial bump in the road?
Their offer was fair & acceptable— otherwise you would not have had a contract. The offer from the buyers may be the best you’ll get. Instead of seeking advantage from their difficulty, congratulate them for trying to meet the terms of the agreement & enjoy your check at closing! Thinking of Selling?
