Read Your FEMA Letter Carefully INDIANAPOLIS – If you applied for FEMA assistance you will receive a letter by mail or email. If the letter says you are “not approved” for assistance, it does not mean that you won’t receive assistance. It is important to read the letter carefully because it will include the amount of money FEMA may provide and information on the appropriate use of that money. The letter will also explain your application status and advise what you need to do to appeal if you disagree with the decision. Often, you only need to send additional information or supporting documentation for FEMA to continue reviewing your application for financial assistance. Examples of missing documentation may include: • Proof of insurance coverage. • Settlement of insurance claims or denial letter from insurance provider. • Proof of identity. • Proof of occupancy. • Proof of ownership. • Proof that the damaged property was your primary residence at the time of the disaster. For more information on understanding your FEMA letter, please visit FEMA.gov/letter. Appealing FEMA’s Decision If you disagree with FEMA’s decision or the amount of money provided, you can submit an appeal letter and documents supporting your claim, such as a contractor’s estimate for home repairs. You have 60 days from the date of your letter to appeal. At the end of your FEMA letter, look for an appeal form that can be used to send us additional information about your situation. This form can help make sure you have the information FEMA needs and gives you space to explain why you need help. Appeals must be postmarked within 60 days of the date noted on your FEMA letter. Appeal letters and supporting documents may be uploaded to your personal FEMA online account. To set up an account, visit DisasterAssistance.gov and follow the directions.

You can also find step-by-step instructions for creating an account and uploading documents by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov: A Guide for Survivors. Other ways to submit documents include: • In-person: If you need assistance to upload documents, you can head to an in-person site near you. Find locations by visiting on.in.gov/ August2026Disaster. • Mail: FEMA National Processing Service Center, P.O. Box 10055, Hyattsville MD 20782-7055 • Fax: 800-827-8112 Attention: FEMA All documents you send to FEMA as part of your appeal should include your • Full name • Current phone number and address • Disaster number and nine-digit FEMA application number written on all pages, and • Address of the disaster-damaged home. If you choose to have a third party submit an appeal on your behalf, include a statement signed by you, authorizing the third party to appeal a decision on your behalf, unless those documents are already on file. For more information on your FEMA letter and how to appeal visit: FEMA.gov/appeal. Check the Status of Your Application Any Time FEMA’s online status tracker is the fastest and easiest way for you to see the latest updates on your application for assistance. The status tracker is accessible 24/7 in your account on DisasterAssistance.gov. On the site, click “Check Status” and sign in or create an account. Once logged in, click the “Status” tab to see the status tracker for updates on your application or next steps you may need to take. If you have questions, call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. If you use a relay service such as Video Relay Service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, provide FEMA your number for that service when you apply.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: After taking the last walk-through tour I closed on my house. Everything seemed fine. All the upgraded appliances (Stove/oven, Microwave and Dishwasher) were installed. I was handed the keys to the house the next day at about 4 PM. I did not go to inspect the house on the day of settlement but the next day when I went to the house at about 6.30 PM all the appliances (stove/oven, microwave and dishwasher) were gone from the house. I filed a police report. The officer inspected the house and found out that there was no sign of a break-in, no windows were broken or unlocked and all the locks were intact. He made a report but also suggested that I talk to the builder. So the next day I went and talked to the builder at the office. He simply told me he did not have any key to the house and its bad luck that all the appliances are stolen. What can I do? Answer: The problem here is that buyers are best served with a pre-closing inspection right before

settlement -- minutes before if possible. Had such an inspection taken place it would have been the builder’s responsibility to deliver any missing appliances. In this situation it is likely that you have homeowner’s insurance to cover such events so speak with your insurance provider. You should have serial numbers from the builder that can be provided to the insurance company. You are plainly the victim of a crime. Before going further ask the police to check the property for fingerprints and other evidence. Also, ask if there have there been similar incidents in the new home community where you bought or at other new home properties. Thinking of Selling? Y? WHY NOT!

25 Years Later: Have We Forgotten How to Come Together? by Janice R Newman This past week marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, commonly known as 9/11. It was a tragic day that changed our country and citizens forever. Nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives, their families devastated, and here and around the world people watched the events unfold on television or in-person that many of us will never forget. I remember hearing the news driving home after dropping my children off at school. Like millions of Americans, I was shocked, frightened, and prayed for the people involved. But as terrible as that day was, there is something else I remember about the days that followed. People came together. People worked together for one cause. People were united! Newspaper and television pictures showed first responders and ordinary citizens covered in dust and ash, helping anyone they could. People carried strangers to safety, searched for survivors, donated blood, gave supplies, prayed together, hugged one another, and cried together. People traveled from around the country to come and assist where needed. During the hours and days immediately after, the differences in people seemed irrelevant. Race, age, neighborhood, political beliefs, income, and background did not matter as much. People saw other people who needed help and they helped without needing to be asked or looking for a pat on the back. We became neighbors. We put others first, like Jesus said was the second greatest commandment, “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:39) Twenty-five years later, perhaps one way we can honor those who lost their lives is by remembering that spirit of unity. Why should tragedy have to remind us that we need one another? We can’t sustain living without other people in some form, therefore we do need one another. Being a good neighbor can start with something

simple: say hello! Introduce yourself to the people who live near you. Get off the porch! Learn your neighbors’ names and exchange phone numbers. During extreme heat or power outages like a few weeks ago, check on your elderly neighbor. Be neighborly by bringing in someone’s garbage can, waving hello, or helping shovel snow. You can show appreciation for first responders in our communities. Thank a firefighter, police officer, EMT, nurse, doctor, military member, teacher, or other person who helps others. They are often recognized or appreciated during emergencies, but we should appreciate their service every day. You can help someone without asking, “What’s in it for me?” Not every good deed needs a payment, picture, social media post, award, or public thankyou. Sometimes we should help simply because someone needs help. Lend a hand—after all, God gave us two. We must also learn how to disagree without becoming enemies. We are not going to agree on every political issue, belief, community concern, or personal choice. Everyone doesn’t think alike. We need to respect our differences while staying civil and kind. Let’s spend less time fighting over our differences and just work together. Show people you care no matter way. The Bible tells us, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). Your neighbor is anybody and everybody. The verse doesn’t say to love only the neighbors that live next door, who look like us, vote like us, agree with us, or live like us. It simply says, “Love your neighbor.” Twenty-five years later, let us remember more than the tragedy of September 11. Let us remember what happened when people decided to care about one another. Neighborly love flourished! Why wait for tragedy to remind us that we need each other and should love each other? Start today! Y? Why Not!

Plum Creek Center 2138 Moeller Street Dyer, IN 46311 (219) 931-5284 www.unitynwi.org ALL WELCOME MINISTER: REV. GERALDINE COLVIN SUNDAY SERVICE.......................10:00 AM

JOSH BOOTSMA Psalm 84: 1-2: How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. Have you ever felt homesick? Psalm 84 gives voice to the greatest kind of homesickness: homesickness for the presence of God — longing for God’s house. We all feel this longing for God’s house, even if we don’t know it. The man who drinks night after night after night so he doesn’t have to think about his failures in life, that man is longing for God’s house. The woman who works nonstop so she can prove to others and herself that she’s the best, that woman is longing for God’s house. The elderly person who just can’t seem to get healthy enough to feel good again, that person is longing for God’s house! Why is there an inner groaning in each one of us for God’s house? Because God made us to be in communion with him! We were

designed to live in God’s world and always be in God’s presence! But things aren’t the way they’re supposed to be. We came into a world where we were opposed to God. We can’t access God’s house and be in his presence. But praise God, he has given us the key to his beautiful home. The key is Jesus. Only through him can we have restored access and relationship to our heavenly father. Acts 4:12 says, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Are you living into your God-given design to be in relationship with him? Are you groaning for God’s house, while the key has been available to you this whole time? Surrender your life to Jesus and truly live! Josh Bootsma Director of Ministries, Covenant Fellowship Church of South Holland cfcsh.org

Yom Kippur is the most holiest and sacred day of reflection in Judaism. Translated from Hebrew to “Day of Atonement,” Yom Kippur is considered a somber day to reflect, repent, and ask for forgiveness for sins committed in the past year through prayer. According to Jewish tradition, the “Ten Days of Repentance” begins with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year). On Rosh Hashanah, God opens the Book of Life to make judgement on all living beings and writes the fate of everyone for the upcoming year. Yom Kippur marks the end of the repentance period when God seals his judgement on everyone. Source: nationaldaycalendar.com

With a deep commitment to keeping the magic of the Stylistics alive, Russell Thompkins & The New Stylistics offer an authentic, heartfelt musical experience. For over five decades, the Stylistics have been synonymous with classic soul hits such as “You Are Everything,” “Betcha by Golly, Wow,” “I’m Stone in Love with You,” and “Break Up to Make Up.” As the group’s original lead vocalist, Thompkins’ distinct falsetto has earned him a place among the most revered voices in R&B history. Initially formed in 1962, the Dramatics first signed with Volt—then a part of Stax Records in Memphis—in 1969, but were dropped after one unsuccessful single. They found their fortune after re-signing in 1971, quickly becoming one of soul music’s supergroups with a string of hits that included “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get,” “Get Up and Get Down,” “In the Rain,” “Hey You! Get Off My Mountain,” and “Fell for You.” The group moved over to Cadet Records in 1974 and the next year to ABC, where they charted such hits as “Me

Formed in the 1970s, Enchantment became one of the most influential groups of their era, earning accolades for their exceptional musicality and emotional performances. Their smooth sound and lush arrangements have made them a fan favorite for generations. With an unwavering commitment to delivering the best in live performances, Enchantment is set to take fans on a musical journey, performing their classic hits while continuing to create new memories with their timeless style. Ray, Goodman & Brown is an American R&B vocal group that originated in the mid-1960s as the Moments. The group achieved its greatest success during the 1970s, scoring hits such as “Love on a Two-Way Street,” “Sexy Mama,” and “Look at Me (I’m in Love).” In 1978, the group changed its name to Ray, Goodman & Brown and continued to find success with songs including “Special Lady.” The group released its debut album, Not on the Outside, But on the Inside, Strong!, in 1969. The album spent 22 weeks on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, reaching No. 8 on July 4, 1970.
