Teach and Inspire Your Kids by Exploring History as a Family (Feature Impact) During back-to-school season, education is naturally at the forefront of most parents’ minds. While a lot of important learning is accomplished in the classroom, there are so many opportunities to continue challenging and developing children’s minds and hearts in family life as well. Learning about history together is a practical way to inspire deep, meaningful conversations about the world, whether from books, documentaries or visits to museums. Now is an opportune time to explore the story of Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager evading Nazi capture during the Holocaust. Families can read her famous diary together then visit “Anne Frank The Exhibition,” presented by the Anne Frank House at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. This comprehensive exhibition immerses visitors in the context that shaped Frank’s life, from her early years in Frankfurt through her tragic death and how her father ensured her legacy. The centerpiece is the first full-scale recreation of the Annex where the Frank family and four other Jews hid during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

The exhibition, recommended for visitors ages 10 and older, is open through early 2027. No matter what piece of history families choose to delve into together, they should take the time to discuss with their kids what they’re thinking and feeling about everything they’re discovering. Then together they can figure out what lessons from the past can be taken into the future. “Anne Frank’s story is a powerful reminder of what happens when fear and hatred are allowed to take root,” said Dr. Chevy Humphrey, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry president and CEO. “At the same time, it reveals the quiet but enduring strength of curiosity, creativity and resilience, values that sit at the heart of our mission. We hope this exhibition offers meaningful moments of reflection for our guests, particularly young people, and encourages them to think critically about their role in the world they are inheriting.” Learn more about the exhibit and other experiences that bring history & science to life at GriffinMSI.org.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are going to finish our basement. We are not going to obtain permits. Too expensive and too much hassle. We have glass block windows so an assessor will never know if we finished it. How could they possibly find out? I’m not going to give you my address for obvious reasons. Answer: A property tax assessor learns that a home has a finished basement primarily through building permits, real estate listings, aerial or street-view imagery, neighbor reports, and periodic physical reassessments of the neighborhood. Pulling local building permit records for electrical, plumbing, or remodeling permits is the most common way an office flags an upgrade. If a home is sold or put on the rental market, MLS photos and descriptions detailing a finished lower level become public record. Field assessors periodically drive

Ge

by or walk properties, noting new contractor trucks, window wells, or extra central HVAC condensers. Taxpayers or disgruntled neighbors sometimes report unpermitted work, or owners note improvements during an appeal. Keep in mind many Attorneys for the buyer of a property will ask for building permits to ensure the remodel was done properly. We would advise you to get the proper permits. It protects you now and in the future. Thinking of Selling your home? Call Cathy & Jim Higgins: Ind: 219-577 5905 Ill: 708-828-3304. Y? WHY NOT!

Be Aware: Back-to-School Changes Matter by Janice R Newman As Slim Shady said in his song, “Guess who’s back,…, tell a friend!” School is back in session for most school districts across the country. The school shopping is finished, backpacks are packed, and teachers have prepared and decorated their classrooms for a new year of learning. Parents may feel relieved that the routine has returned, but this is also an important time to pay close attention to how students are adjusting. Congratulations, your student is moving up another grade. However, they may also be changing schools or moving into a new school setting, such as transitioning from elementary school to middle school or from middle school to high school. The first few weeks can be exciting, but they can also be emotional, stressful, and sometimes overwhelming. Students are learning new schedules, meeting teachers, reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and trying to figure out where they fit. Friendships can also change quickly. The friend your child spent every day with last year may now have a new group. Lunch tables, recess groups, sports teams, clubs, and even social media conversations can create new social pressures. Cyberbullying and in-person bullying can also begin or increase as students try to establish themselves socially. Here are a few things to watch for during the first month of school. First, pay attention to changes in mood or attitude. Is your child more emotional, angry, quiet, or withdrawn than usual? Are they spending more time alone in their room or no longer smiling and talking like they normally do? One difficult day may not mean something is wrong, but repeated changes deserve attention. Second, notice physical warning signs. Torn clothing, missing favorite items, unexplained scratches, damaged school supplies, or frequent requests for replacement items may be signs of bullying or conflict. Bullying is not always physical. Cruel jokes, exclusion, rumors, group chats, embarrassing posts, or hurtful comments can cause just as much emotional pain as a shove or punch.

Third, talk with your student every day. A simple 7-to-15-minute check-in can make a difference. If evenings are busy, talk while setting the table, eating dinner, driving home, or washing dishes. Ask openended questions such as, “What was the best part of your day?” “Who did you sit with at lunch?” or “Was there anything that made you uncomfortable today?” Then listen without immediately interrupting or judging. Fourth, check their schoolwork. Make sure they are not quietly struggling academically. Ask your child to explain an assignment or show you what they learned. Students often enjoy sharing what they understand. If they cannot explain it, seem frustrated, or avoid the subject completely, they may need extra help, tutoring, or a conversation with the teacher. It is better to identify the problem early than wait until grades begin to fall. Fifth, learn about their friendships. Ask about new friends and old friends. If a friendship suddenly ended, gently ask what happened. Is your child being ignored, excluded, pressured, or treated differently? Also pay attention to online friendships, group texts, gaming chats, and social media. Cyberbullying can follow a student home long after the school day ends. The Bible reminds us in James 1:19 to be “quick to listen, slow to speak.” That is especially important with children. Sometimes they do not need an immediate lecture or solution. They first need to know that someone notices, listens, and cares. School involves academic learning, but it also involves social and emotional growth. Students are learning who they are, where they belong, and how to handle disappointment, conflict, pressure, and change. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, teachers, and other trusted adults can help them navigate those challenges. Watch. Listen. Ask questions. Stay involved. A small change in behavior may be your student’s way of saying, “I need help.” Be aware and be available. Y? Why Not! https://www.youtube.com/@ywhynotshow

New Illinois law establishes rules for electric bikes, scooters By BEN SZALINSKI Capitol News Illinois bszalinski@capitolnewsillinois.com New rules governing who can use electric bikes and scooters, including where and how fast they go, will go into effect next year following Gov. JB Pritzker’s signature on Wednesday. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 3484 which establishes regulations on “micromobility” transportation that include age requirements, speed limits and rules on where they can be operated. The bill takes effect Jan. 1. The bill passed both chambers with bipartisan support on June 1 following several amendments throughout the spring session. The new law was one of Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ top priorities during the legislative session. The Chicago mayoral candidate said unregulated micromobility devices have become a problem in the city. The state already has some regulations for low-speed electric bikes and scooters, but regulation often varies at the local level. The bill creates new statewide standards for high-speed electric bikes and scooters, electric motor bikes, and electric unicycles and skateboards. “Municipal leaders have been responding in real time as new electric devices appear on local streets, sidewalks and bike paths,” Illinois Municipal League CEO Brad Cole said in a statement. “A statewide framework gives communities greater consistency while providing local officials and law enforcement with clearer guidance.” Law enforcement groups were also in support of the bill. What’s changing It creates a new tier of regulations for “high-speed” e-bikes, which have electric motors and can travel faster than 28 mph. Those would be regulated similarly to motorcycles and require users to have a driver’s license, insurance, an ownership title and register the vehicle with the state. They also must be driven on roads. “Low-speed” e-bikes are already regulated by the state, but the law creates new tiers that govern how old a person must be to drive them. Drivers must be 15 years old to operate a Class 1 pedal-assist bike that travels up to 20 mph, such as Chicago’s Divvy Bikes, and a Class 2 motor-powered bike that doesn’t have to be pedaled. People must be 16 years old to drive pedal-

assist bikes that can travel up to 28 mph. All low-speed e-bikes can be used on streets, bike lanes, paths and trails, but not on sidewalks. Some high-speed electric scooters can reach speeds of 50 mph, but the new regulations limit riders to traveling up to 28 mph. Riders would be allowed to operate them on paths, bike lanes, roads with speed limits up to 35 mph, or roads with higher speed limits if there is a bike lane. Users must be 16 years old. Low-speed electric scooters that top out at 20 mph would also be allowed on paths, bike lanes, and roads by users who are at least 16 years old, down from 18 years old in current law. Battery-powered devices designed for young children would be unregulated aside from a stipulation they must stay on sidewalks and paths. Users who violate the regulations could pay fines and have their devices confiscated and impounded by the police. They are also subject to other existing traffic laws and penalties as well. Safety concerns Supporters of the legislation say the devices create a safety hazard for both riders and pedestrians because some can travel more than 40 mph and can often be found sharing space on both sidewalks and busy streets. Several crashes involving young riders on e-bikes have made headlines this summer. A Crystal Lake 15-yearold was left in serious condition in August and was found to be the at-fault driver when he drove in front of a car, according to police. A 14-year-old was killed in July when he crossed in front of an SUV while riding an electronic dirt bike in front of Wauconda High School. In Chicago, a 16-year-old on a Lime e-scooter was killed when he lost control and was hit by a semi-truck near the intersection of Western Avenue and Irving Park Road in early August. Two other teens were killed in accidents on e-scooters on the city’s South Side earlier in the summer. The Secretary of State’s office plans to use a public awareness campaign to make people aware of the new law and will be updating driver education materials. RICHARD ZEKVELD Last week I introduced you to ‘Expressive Individualism.’ It says that your inner self, your deepest feelings and desires, define you. You must discover your inner self and express it freely to be fully you. It’s not who God says I am or others say I am, but who I say I am. In the past, family and community defined you. You were the daughter of so-and-so, you were going to be a farmer like your dad, you were Baptist because your people were, or you were going to marry so-and-so. Your community might label you the smart one, the funny one, the troublemaker, the hard-working one, the lazy one, etc. Expressive Individualism reacts. “Others can’t put me in a box to tell me who I am or what I can be and do! I decide, based on my unique inner self. Now others must affirm me.” In John 10:3, Jesus says, “The sheep

hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” He’s talking about himself as the Good Shepherd. Dr. Tim Keller used to say that our deepest need is not to name ourselves or have others name us, but to have Jesus name us as unique individuals, created in God’s image, messed-up by sin, and redeemed by Jesus to thrive as God’s beloved children for his purposes. He redeems us to live in formative community with him and others that helps shape who we are. The Christian says, “I am not my own but belong, body and soul, in life and in death to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.” He tells me who I am. He redeems and renovates me to become my truest self as he intended, in line with his design. Richard Zekveld, Pastor Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Labor Day on first Monday of every September recognizes the men and women who labor to build this country. Through a time-honored tradition with roots in the coordinated efforts of the labor movement of the 1800s, we salute the American workforce. Since the founding of the United States, the country has relied on its workforce for its infrastructure. From its streets and buildings to its transportation and security, the nation runs on labor. The labor of what we create, build and harvest fuels our education and inspires our dreams. Source: nationaldaycalendar.com

Grace Hummel “Frau” Westerhof June 11, 1943-August 22, 2026. Born in the town of Sauwerd in the then Nazi-occupied Netherlands, Grace (then Grietje) was the first-born child of Albert and Grace Hummel. Brothers Hendrik (Hank) and Petrus (Peter) joined the family in 1946 and 1950, respectively. In the winter of 1957, the family immigrated to the US, sponsored by a Presbyterian church in Oxford, Penn. They moved the next summer to a Philadelphia suburb to be close to Trinity Chapel Christian Reformed Church and Delaware County Christian School. In 1963, Grace boarded a bus at 2 AM to Sioux Center, Iowa, to begin her study of German and Secondary Education at Dordt College. During her four years there, she made true, lifelong friends. She began her teaching career in 1967 at Western Michigan Christian High School in Muskegon, Mich. While there, a friend set her up on a blind date with William (Bill) Westerhof, then a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. The couple became engaged in February, 1970 and married in August of the same year. They moved to Oak Forest, Ill. shortly after the wedding and later settled in Lansing, Ill, until moving to Saint John, Ind. in 2005. Grace taught at Calvin Christian School in South Holland until the arrival of their twin daughters, Kristen and Shelley. After son Nathan’s birth in 1977, Grace briefly taught at Lansing Christian until the arrival of son Justin in 1979. Both at home and at school, Grace had two dominant themes: going and growing. Highlights of the children’s early years include many trips to the beach and long family road trips all over the U.S., as well as regular trips to Michigan and Canada to visit family. As the grandchildren grew, visits to and from Grandma were special treats, with ice cream guaranteed. Grace loved the city of Chicago and enjoying its offerings with her family and outof-town friends. Grace also took great pride in developing her gardens and seemed to have an instinct in how to treat each plant. The backyard featured
