Charbonneau: Hoosiers can request up to $5,000 from State Disaster Relief Fund STATEHOUSE (Aug. 18, 2026) — Eligible Hoosiers can now request up to $5,000 from the State Disaster Relief Fund following the recent devastating storms across Indiana, said State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso). The recent destructive storms across the state have displaced many Hoosier families. Through the State Disaster Relief Fund, Hoosiers in need of assistance can request up to $5,000 in emergency aid grants to help replace basic items like food and clothing. Disaster Relief Fund applications can also be submitted by calling 211 or through the in.gov/dhs website. The state is collecting damage reports from Hoosiers through Indiana 211. This information will be used to analyze and determine recovery needs. Hoosier families in need of assistance may also call Indiana 211 to be connected to local resources and services. “The recent storms in northwest and central Indiana

have been heartbreaking to witness, and my heart is with all who have been impacted,” Charbonneau said. “As we begin to recover, I want to share this information to help Hoosiers who are in need of assistance. In times like this, it is important to come together, help our neighbors and remember safety is our top priority.” The governor has activated emergency SNAP benefit replacements for eligible recipients who lost food due to the storms. Affected Hoosiers will need to submit an affidavit for replacement benefits. The affidavit must be submitted within 10 days of the event, and the loss must be verified. The document may be uploaded to the FSSA Benefits Portal or dropped off at any Division of Family Resources’ office. Visit on.in.gov/August2026Disaster for up-todate information and resources regarding the August 2026 storms.

Sims highlights disaster assistance, tax relief following months of severe storms CHICAGO – Families and businesses that have been impacted by the severe storms, tornadoes and flash flooding across the Chicagoland area this summer could be eligible for recovery assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration as well as waived tax penalties and interest, State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. announced Friday. “Following a disaster, it’s important for the community to come together and help each other heal,” said Sims (D-Chicago). “Disaster tax relief and assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration can give families and business owners the boost they need to bounce back.” Earlier this month, the SBA approved Illinois’ disaster declaration for Cook and Will counties for damage resulting from the July 27 and Aug. 9-11 storms. Residents in the surrounding counties of DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake and McHenry are also eligible to apply for the SBA’s long-term, low-interest disaster loans. The declaration makes three types of loans available: • Business Physical Disaster Loans: Loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventory, supplies, machinery and equipment. These applications must be received by the SBA no later than Oct. 19, 2026. • Economic Injury Disaster Loans: Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural

cooperatives and most private nonprofits meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a result of the disaster. These applications must be submitted to the SBA no later than May 18, 2027. • Home Disaster Loans: Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles. These loan applications are due Oct. 19, 2026. Applicants can apply for SBA assistance and receive additional disaster information at https://lending.sba.gov/ search-disaster/?disaster=IL-20035 or by calling the SBA Customer Service line at 800-659-2955. To further assist impacted residents, temporary tax relief will also apply to the counties included in Illinois’ disaster proclamation. Taxpayers may send a brief written explanation to the Illinois Department of Revenue requesting a waiver of tax penalties and interest. Requests can be submitted electronically to Rev.DisasterRelief@Illinois.gov, or people can find more information here. Taxpayers who experienced property damage should contact their county supervisor of assessments if they wish to apply for a reassessment. Will County residents can find information here about Multi-Agency Resource Centers, which provide access to in-person assistance and resources related to storm recovery. Disaster Loan Outreach Centers in Cook County will remain open through Sept. 4.

RICHARD ZEKVELD Expressive Individualism is the dominant ‘gut-level’ belief system of our age. It says that your inner self, your deepest feelings and desires, define who you are. You must discover your self and express it freely to be fully you. It’s not “You say who I am” or even “God says who I am”, but “I say who I am,” based on my true inner self. It means you don’t let your family or culture or church hand you a truth package and say, “This is what you must believe.” No, you can visit the belief buffet and assemble an eclectic plate of beliefs that are uniquely you. You get to define and express your unique personality and interests. No one can impose these on you. Your body is a neutral canvas that you may paint, pierce, remodel, or carve as you choose to express your inner self. Your body is a neutral tool you can use as you choose to express

your inner self. When it comes to sexual identity and desire, not even biology defines who you are. Your inner self does. What if someone objects to how you express yourself or what you do with your body? Expressive Individualism has only two boxes for people: (1) they affirm and celebrate how you express your inner self or (2) they hate you. Even if they insist that they still love you when they disagree with you. Expressive Individualism says that when you object to how I live out my inner self, you are canceling me. You reject who I am as a person. What is a Christian response to Expressive Individualism? Expressive Individualism gets some things right, but as a belief system it is deeply problematic. More on that next week. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Indiana Delegation Sends Letter to President Trump Supporting Major Disaster Declaration for August Storms Washington, DC – Today, the Indiana congressional delegation sent a letter to President Donald Trump in support of Governor Mike Braun’s August 20, 2026, request for a major disaster declaration following severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that began on August 11. The delegation thanked President Trump for his swift approval of federal emergency assistance following the August storms and urged him to approve Governor Braun’s August 20 major disaster declaration request, while reiterating the delegation’s support for the governor’s pending request for the June storms. The text of the letter is below: “Dear President Trump, “We thank you for your continued support following the severe weather that has impacted our state this summer, including your swift approval of Governor Mike Braun’s Emergency Declaration request following the storms, tornadoes, and flooding that began on August 11. That assistance has provided important federal resources as state and local officials continue responding to widespread damage. “As those efforts continue, we write in strong support of Governor Braun’s August 20 request for a Major Disaster Declaration. The damage from these storms has been

widespread and, in some places, historic. At least eight Hoosiers have died, more than 1,000 families have been displaced, and power outages peaked at more than 360,000 customers, with Northwest Indiana among the hardest hit and tens of thousands still without power. More than 1,700 structures have been destroyed, damaged, or otherwise affected. Flooding forced hundreds of evacuations and water rescues, while roads and bridges were damaged or washed out. In Anderson and Noblesville, the White River exceeded flood records set in 1913, and hundreds of homes along the river in Indianapolis were evacuated. “In the days since the storms, Hoosiers have stepped up to help their neighbors with donations, supplies, and other support. State agencies, local officials, first responders, and volunteers have been working around the clock as well, but the damage has created needs on a scale that communities cannot reasonably meet on their own. Our offices are also hearing from people who are still trying to understand what assistance is available and when it may come. A Major Disaster Declaration would provide the additional federal resources needed to support that work and help families and communities through the weeks and months ahead. “We also continue to support Governor Braun’s August

6 request for a Major Disaster Declaration for the separate storms that struck from June 6–26. Many communities, particularly in Northwest Indiana, were still dealing with damage from those storms when the August disaster hit, leaving local governments to respond to another round of serious damage just weeks later. “We appreciate the assistance your administration and FEMA have provided thus far, as well as your continued consideration of the June request. The emergency assistance already approved has been important to the immediate response, and we respectfully urge swift approval of the Governor’s August 20 request to provide the additional support needed for recovery. We stand ready to work with your administration and FEMA to support affected Hoosiers and communities.” Sincerely, U.S. Senator Todd Young (IN), U.S. Senator Jim Banks (IN), Congressman Frank J. Mrvan (IN-01), Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02), Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-03), Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04), Congressman Victoria Spartz (IN-05), Congressman Jefferson Shreve (IN-06), Congressman André Carson (IN-07), Congressman Mark Messmer (IN-08), Congresswoman Erin Houchin (IN-09)

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My friend told me that my home is only worth $330,000 based on the assessed value. Properties have been selling for a lot higher around here. She said her tax bill indicated this low value. Am I missing something? Answer: I’m sure your friend is a wonderful person and knowledgeable in many areas, but not in real estate. A home’s assessed value is set by the local government to calculate property taxes, while market value is the actual price the home would sell for on the open market. Assessed values often lag behind real-time market changes and are frequently lower than the actual market value. The main use is figuring out yearly property taxes. It’s set by local government tax assessors. They use mass formulas and historical sales data and often represents a fixed percentage of a home’s value. Assessments are updated periodically (such as every year or a few years). Improvements you’ve made to your home, in between assessments, will certainly add to the assessed value. Market Values Main Use is for Buying, selling, or refinancing a home. It is set by Real estate buyers, sellers, and agents. It is based on current buyer demand, local competition, the improvements to your specific home and recent sales of similar homes. If your home has market appeal, it will demand more value. Market value changes constantly based on realtime market behavior. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling your home?
