Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD We will long remember the ferocious storm front that crashed through our region last Tuesday. Derecho winds, torrential rains, and tornados left in their wake a swath of mangled trees, downed power lines, flooded basements, damaged houses, cars, and properties, and hundreds of thousands of people without power for days. A shout out to the army working tirelessly to restore the power grid. We thank God for you and for companies, systems, communities, and people that work together in a crisis. Why did these storms hit when and where they did? There’s a meteorological answer to that question. Ask Tom Skilling or Matt Redkin. But there’s another way to answer that question: God sent these storms when and where he did, for his own purposes – purposes that remain a mystery to us. In 1774, William Cowper penned these words: God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform.
He plants his footsteps in the sea And rides upon the storm. You fearful saints, fresh courage take; The clouds you so much dread Are big with mercy and will break With blessings on your head. Cowper battled depression most of his life. Once, he attempted to take his own life. In his struggles and storms, he clung to God as his forever hope. Even when he could not understand what God was up to, he knew God loved him and would rescue him forever. If God subjected his Son Jesus to the ultimate storm of judgment to redeem us from sin and death – that’s love! When we don’t understand God’s purposes in the storms, those who turn from their sin and self-rule to trust Jesus can still say with certainty, “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org
