WORLD BRAIN DAY July 22, 2026

For the fourth straight summer, smoke from Canadian wildfires has been an issue in the Midwest and Great Lakes region. It’s not a new phenomenon. In past generations, smoke from forest fires choked entire regions and actually proved hazardous to shipping on the Great Lakes. One of the worst examples was 1871, when a massive drought sparked fires across the Upper Midwest and led to some of the nation’s greatest tragedies. Today, progressives point to the environmental disasters of the fires in Canada, but 150 years ago, there was far less concern for ecology. There were also far fewer regulations, as measures to prevent greenhouse gases, carbon footprint, and air quality were still decades away. In addition, environmental protections were not on the minds of most Americans, who did not understand the ramifications – and did not care. For Americans of generations past, basic survival was still a primary concern, while business owners were more concerned with the bottom line than any notion of future ecological ruin. On the Great Lakes, ship captains had few of the amenities of today, such as radar and electronic contact. Many wooden ships were still afloat, and firefighting equipment was rudimentary. For ship masters of long-ago times, wildfire smoke on the Lakes was just one more hazard to deal with, and they were certainly used to it. In his 1960 classic Shipwrecks and Survivals, journalist and newsman William Ratigan writes that “for two generations the smoke of great forest disasters was a unique and dreaded peril on the Lakes.” In colorful prose, Ratigan adds that “in the red, acrid fog haze ships… lost their bearings, went aground, rammed each other, caught fire, and burned like haystacks.” Those ships that did survive came back with scars. Ratigan writes that old-timers “remember the haze of forest-fire smoke on the Lakes as vividly as they recall the smothering Lake fogs of spring and late autumn. They have told of sails blackened by smoke and riddled with burnt holes by cinders hurled by the wind.”
The shipping season of 1871 was particularly severe, as the Upper Midwest was hammered by one of the more severe droughts in American history. Less than half the normal rain fell between July and September, causing an outbreak of wildfires. Ratigan writes that “dense smoke hovered over the Lakes like a pall,” causing extreme danger for ships. There were a mind-numbing 1,167 shipwrecks on the Great Lakes in 1871. The severity of 1871 resulted in deadly tragedy that fall, particularly in Chicago. Coupled with persistent winds, the dryness, in the words of one observer, turned “all the wood in wooden Chicago into tinder.” In a time before sophisticated fire protection, Chicago’s 334,000 residents had little to fall back on, as there were only 185 firefighters and 17 horse-drawn engines in the city. On Oct. 7, 1871, a massive blaze leveled four blocks south of the Chicago business district, which required seventeen hours to extinguish. That simply set the stage for the next evening, when the epic Chicago Fire ripped through the city, leaving 100,000 people homeless. Nearly all of the city’s hotels, banks, and department stores were lost, as well as the many of Chicago’s lumberyards, the Illinois Central Railroad facilities and the famed McCormick Reaper Factory. The reported death totals of 300 were likely an understated number. And that may not have been the worst fire that day. To the north, an incinerating blaze ripped through Peshtigo, a northeastern Wisconsin lumber town dominated by former Chicago mayor William Ogden. An estimated 1,100 residents were killed in Peshtigo, the deadliest fire disaster in American history. Destructive, and deadly, fires were also reported across Michigan, especially in the communities of Holland, Port Huron, and Manistee. It was a bitter postscript on the year of 1871, a time when the smoke hung over the Midwest even worse than today. Tom Emery is a freelance writer and historical researcher from Carlinville, Ill. Cook County Swears in New Support Dog to Serve Victims CHICAGO – Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke on Monday administered the oath of office to the newest member of her staff: a two-year-old golden retriever named Ruthie. Ruthie, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office’s (CCSAO) second court dog, will be based at 555 W. Harrison, the Domestic Violence Courthouse, to support victims and witnesses of crime as they meet with prosecutors. Ruthie is specially trained to provide comfort and relieve stress for individuals who have experienced trauma. Many of the victims and witnesses who come to the Domestic Violence Courthouse have cases handled by the CCSAO’s Special Victims Bureau, a division that prosecutes sensitive crimes such as domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Expanding the CCSAO’s court dog program advances one of SA Burke’s chief priorities — combatting the rising trend of domestic violence and providing support for those most directly traumatized by crime and abuse. “The victims we serve display tremendous courage when they come to court and must face their abusers,”
State’s Attorney Burke said. “Adding Ruthie to our team reflects our trauma-informed approach to prosecution, providing comfort and support to victims during some of the most difficult experiences of their lives. To hold offenders accountable and keep our communities safe, we must ensure victims feel supported, empowered, and able to participate in the justice process.” CCSAO Investigator, Sgt. Eileen McDermott will serve as Ruthie’s primary handler. In addition to being available during meetings with prosecutors, Ruthie can greet victims at the building’s entrance to provide comfort on trial day and escort them as they navigate the courthouse. Ruthie comes to the CCSAO after completing rigorous training through Healing Hearts Service Dogs, a nonprofit based in Tinley Park that raises and trains working dogs to comfort individuals experiencing trauma, stress, and physical and emotional uncertainty in their lives. Since 2023, Healing Hearts has certified 65 Therapy Dog Teams, graduated 18 Facility Dogs into new jobs, and made over 1,400 therapy visits.
Also joining Ruthie at her swearing in ceremony on Monday was the CCSAO’s first court dog, eight-yearold Hatty. Hatty, a Labrador retriever, has been based at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse since 2019. Throughout her tenure, Hatty has supported and provided comfort to over 200 victims and witnesses during trials, court hearings, sentencings, and meetings with prosecutors related to sexual abuse and violent crime over her seven-year career. Ruthie’s addition to the CCSAO builds on SA Burke’s sustained efforts to combat domestic violence and support victims. Shortly after assuming office, SA Burke created the Special Victims Bureau to better handle such cases and has begun a vertical prosecution model to ensure that victims receive consistent representation and support through each step of the court process. In June, SA Burke created the Victim Services Bureau, bolstering internal resources to provide victims and witnesses with individualized and trauma-informed support as their cases progress through the courts.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Should I update my home? When we do decide to sell, the new owners are going to change things anyway, right? Answer: As Realtors, we get this one question asked of us over and over: If you can afford to update your home, do it. Don’t go crazy with updates. Save your money, then update within your budget. Why? One, you will be able to enjoy these updates and feel proud of your home and what you have done. Two, it will add value to your home. Home values increase due to inflation and supply and demand. If you have a home that looks great, the buyer demand will be higher, and that will generate a higher home price. And, if the supply (homes currently for sale) is low, your homes value will increase even more. Three, If you choose not to update anything, then do NOT expect a quick sale and do NOT expect to receive the value that an updated home has. The buyer demand for your home will be lower. Four, If you cannot afford to update and remodel your home, there are other less expensive options you can take to get more value for your home and you can
do them yourself. Improve your curb appeal. Make your homes exterior look “Wow.” Paint the exterior. Keep your grass and bushes trimmed. Add colorful flowers. Make your home look Sparkling Clean. Update fixtures one at a time as you can afford it. What does your flooring look like? You can install these beautiful, new types of flooring yourself. Don’t underestimate the power of the first impression, inside & out. If you make the decision to buy a home, along with the benefits, comes some work. Do this work & it is called, “Pride of Ownership.” Take care of your home and you will be rewarded. If you do not want to do the work (or pay to have it done), then you probably should consider renting. Thinking of Selling? Call Cathy & Jim Higgins: Ind: 219-577-5905 Ill: 708-828-3304. IL raises compensation for wrongfully incarcerated under landmark Sims law Freed and exonerated Illinoisans joined State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. and State Representative Justin Slaughter at a press conference Tuesday to celebrate a newly signed law creating a clearer path to financial relief for people who have been wrongfully incarcerated in Illinois. “Today marks a change in how the state of Illinois sees and responds to the injustice of a wrongful incarceration,” said Sims (D-Chicago). “When the system gets it wrong, it’s on us as leaders to step up and make it right. This law goes beyond compensation to provide a path toward justice.” Since 1989, there have been nearly 600 exonerations in Illinois, with individual compensation often inadequate and awarded inconsistently. The average award for exonerated Illinoisans has been $11,190 per year of wrongful imprisonment, according to the Illinois Innocence Project, located at the University of Illinois Springfield. Beyond financial compensation, many exonerated individuals struggle to find stability after having lost irreplaceable years – including years of work experience and paychecks. The impact is felt beyond the individual, causing financial and emotional hardship for their children, families and entire communities who lose not
just a loved one’s income but their presence in the home. Sims has worked tirelessly to addresses the injustice of wrongful imprisonment by raising state compensation for people who have been exonerated. The new law – House Bill 3663 – will provide compensation of up to $50,000 per year of wrongful imprisonment and $25,000 per year wrongfully spent on probation, parole or the sex offender registry. “After years of advocacy, HB 3663 marks a monumental shift in how the state compensates exonerees – innocent women and men who have been wrongfully convicted and imprisoned in IL prisons and received their Certificate of Innocence,” said Illinois Innocence Project Director Stephanie Kamel. “By removing the current cap and enabling the court to award up to $50,000 for each year spent wrongfully imprisoned, the state more fully acknowledges the injustice suffered by exonerees and the state’s moral obligation to provide greater restitution as they work to rebuild their lives. We are grateful for the bipartisan passage of HB 3663 by both the Illinois House and Senate; it is the least we, the citizens of Illinois, can do to support exonerees on their journey forward!” House Bill 3663 was signed into law Tuesday and took effect immediately.
$8.6 Mil. investment by MWRD targets odor concerns near Thornton Reservoir The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) expects to have two projects totaling $5 million to address odor mitigation near its Thornton Reservoir completed by the end of December 2026, bringing total mitigation efforts over the past decade to $8.6 million, according to officials. In addition to previous investments, which include commissioning scientific studies, deploying monitoring sensors, and investing in infrastructure at a cost of $3.6 million, a carbon scrubber is currently being installed on shafts near the reservoir to address occasional tunnel odors and a second project involves installing an odor mitigation system that is located along the perimeter of the reservoir to address odors, says the agency’s top administrator. “On top of our earlier investments, the carbon scrubber and odor neutralizing system being installed at the Thornton Reservoir reflect our commitment to improving the quality of life for nearby residents,” said MWRD Executive Director John Murray.
Following recent rainfall, the MWRD has been conducting additional odor patrols at and around the Thornton Reservoir. The MWRD’s most recent analytical sensor readings are near zero and in most areas below detection. During certain operational phases, however, odors can be present, according to Murray. Being a Good Neighbor “The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is committed to being a good neighbor wherever we have operating facilities because protecting the quality of life for Cook County residents is vital,” said MWRD Board of Commissioners President Kari K. Steele. Last week’s rainfall, among others this year, saw nearly 7.4 billion gallons of water captured by the Thornton Reservoir that may have otherwise exacerbated overbank flooding, street flooding, basement flooding and pollution of area waterways, noted Murray. “Thornton Reservoir helps to protect the quality of life for the residents we serve,” said Murray.

by Janice R Newman Summer is drawing closer to an end, and children will be heading back to school in no time. Take the last few weeks to create extra summer memories with your family. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make meaningful memories. Some of the best memories don’t cost a lot. People remember the time spent laughing, exploring, and connecting with family and not how much was spent. So, if you have a full weekend or just an afternoon, there are many budget-friendly activities nearby that you can visit to enjoy quality time together before school starts again. One of the top activities for my family was attending free concerts or outdoor movies in the park. Many communities and libraries throughout the suburbs offer family-friendly entertainment during the summer months. Most were in the park and you only needed to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and pack a picnic (saves on fast food). You can enjoy music or a movie. Many libraries host free programs, including story times, craft activities, game days, and special performances for children of all ages. If you enjoy the outdoors, consider taking a hike at a nearby state park, such as Starved Rock or a local forest preserve. I love going to Starved Rock. It’s under 100 miles away. Pack a picnic lunch, bring binoculars, and spend time wildlife spotting. See how many birds, butterflies, squirrels, turtles, or deer your children can find. Exploring nature engages curiosity. Milwaukee offers beautiful public beaches, scenic bike trails that are much safer than riding on busy streets, and several museums that offer free admission on select days. A cool summer walk along the lakefront, trying a new restaurant, or exploring a museum can create memories that last after the summer ends. Another popular destination is St. Joseph, Michigan or Kenosha, Wisconsin. Families can enjoy a relaxing day at the beach, walk along the pier, and visit the lighthouse while
taking in the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Find a lighthouse to tour. We visited Marblehead Lighthouse in Ohio and walked up to the top. It was an exhausting and exciting experience. History lovers may enjoy a trip to Springfield, Illinois, where you can visit the Lincoln National Museum. It houses a replica log cabin inside and other artifacts and exhibits. In Chicago, Millennium Park remains a favorite destination with its fountains, gardens, public art, and open spaces. Keep in mind that parking can be expensive, so consider using public transportation if possible. Lincoln Park Zoo is another excellent choice because admission is free, making it one of the city’s best family attractions. Bring a wagon to hold your packed lunch, extra drinks and snacks. County and state fairs can also provide affordable family fun. Many offer special discount days or times with free admission, so check the schedules and cost before you go. Local towns frequently host free festivals, farmers markets, concerts, and community celebrations throughout the summer. To discover even more activities, browse local event listings on Facebook Events, Eventbrite, Things to Do websites, TripAdvisor, your local park district, or your community’s website. You may be surprised by how many free or low-cost events are happening close to home. As summer comes to an end, remember that the greatest gift you can give your family and children is your time. Exploring new places, sharing a picnic, hiking a trail, watching a movie under the stars, or simply laughing together creates lasting memories that no price tag can match. Before Labor Day arrives, make time to reconnect, have fun, and celebrate the joy of being together as a family and don’t forget to bring friends along. Memories last a lifetime, so why not make some today or this weekend? Y? Why Not! Please like us on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/ywhynotshow/
