The Importance of National Counseling Awareness Month The American Counseling Association (ACA) designates April as Counseling Awareness Month to highlight the important role counselors play in promoting mental health and well-being. This month-long observance raises awareness, promotes mental health, and recognizes the contributions of school counselors, substance abuse counselors, and mental health counselors.

In recent years, we have seen an increase in people seeking mental health treatment. According to the latest data from the CDC, released in December 2024, the percentage of adults who received mental health treatment in the past 12 months increased from 19.2% in 2019 to 23.9% in 2023.

One goal of Counseling Awareness Month is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health treatment. Many people perceive seeking help as a sign of weakness or something only for those with severe issues, leading to self-imposed barriers and fear of judgement. Other misconceptions include the belief that people with mental illness are scary or incompetent, that mental health issues are a character flaw, and people with mental health issues are dangerous.

Another reason to recognize Counseling Awareness Month is that research shows most people who die by

suicide have a diagnosable and potentially treatable mental health condition. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention lists mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and others as leading risk factors that increase the chance that a person may try to take their life. An article published in the National Library of Medicine in January 2022 stated that the majority of people who die by suicide have never seen a mental health professional.

So, how can we overcome the stigma of seeking mental health treatment? NAMI recommends openly talking about mental health, educating yourselves and others, recognizing that mental health conditions are as real and treatable as physical illnesses, showing compassion for those with mental illness, being honest about treatment, and seeking help from family and friends.

The Jason Foundation (JFI) is another valuable resource to learn how to help a friend or loved one who may be suffering from a mental health condition. JFI is dedicated to the prevention of youth and young adult suicide through educational and awareness programs. It brings awareness to truly how short life is along with the importance of forgiveness, forgetting, and loving the people in your life. Every day there are hundreds to thousands of people that don’t wake up to see today.

Moments with loved ones are precious, however we often take these moments for granted. We seem to think that there’s always enough time to make that call, to visit, and to say, “I love you”. Unfortunately, when reality hits home, you’re reminded that time is not promised to anyone. Losing a parent forces us to focus on what really matters. We are reminded in the Bible with Matthew 54 (NIV) Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Therefore, we must stay strong and supportive of relatives during times

of sorrow.

Life is too short to live with regrets of not forgiving, not forgetting, and not saying “I love you” to a loved one.

Sometimes, we are prevented from embracing and appreciating people. Forgiveness is important to help us to let go of resentment, past hurts, and pain, be grateful for family, and find time for joy and love. Letting go of anger and hostility can mend relationships and bring peace. Rehashing the past prevents us from letting go and limits growth in our lives.

Every day live with appreciation for the life and relationships you have. Communicate with the people who mean the most to you by talking, writing, or hugging the people that who the most. Because you’ll never know when the time will come to say goodbye so cherish the time you have with those you love.

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN The financial markets always go through periods of instability. And we may see more of that now, given concerns about tariffs, inflation and the economy. As an investor, how can you deal with this volatility?

Some investors try to take advantage of market ups and downs by attempting to follow the age-old advice to “buy low and sell high” — that is, they seek to buy stocks when they feel prices have bottomed out and they sell stocks when they think the market has reached a high point. In theory, this is a great idea, but in practice, it’s essentially impossible, because no one can really predict market highs and lows.

Rather than trying to anticipate highs and lows, your best strategy for coping with the price fluctuations of the financial markets is to diversify your investment portfolio by owning a mix of stocks, bonds and other types of securities. Different types of financial assets can move in different directions at any given time — so, for example, stocks may be up while bonds are down, or vice versa. If you only owned one of these types of assets, and the market for that asset class was down, your portfolio could take a bigger hit than if you owned a variety of asset types.

And you can further diversify within individual asset categories. Stocks can be domestic or international, largecompany or small-company — and these groupings can also move in different directions at the same time, depending on various market forces. As for bonds, they too don’t always move in a uniform direction, or at least with the same intensity — for instance, when interest rates rise, bond prices tend to fall, but longer-term bonds may fall more than shorter-term ones, which are closer to maturity with fewer interest payments remaining. Conversely, when rates are falling, longer-term bonds may be more attractive because they lock in higher yields for a longer time. Consequently, one diversification technique for bonds is to build a “ladder” containing bonds of varying maturities.

Some investments, by their nature,

are already somewhat diversified. A mutual fund can contain dozens, or even hundreds, of stocks, or a mixture of stocks and bonds. And different mutual funds may have different investment objectives — some focus more on growth, while others are more incomeoriented — so, further diversification can be achieved by owning a mix of funds.

Furthermore, some investors achieve even greater diversification by owning alternative investments, such as real estate, commodities and cryptocurrencies, although these vehicles themselves are often more volatile than those in more traditional investment categories.

While a diversified portfolio is important for every investor, your exact level of diversification — the percentages of your portfolio devoted to stocks, bonds and other securities — will depend on your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and financial goals. You may want to consult with a financial professional about creating the diversified investment mix that’s right for your needs.

Ultimately, while diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can help you reduce some of the risks associated with investing and better prepare you to deal with the inevitable volatility of the financial markets — two key benefits that can help you over the many years you’ll spend as an investor.

You must evaluate whether a bond or CD ladder and the securities held within it are consistent with your investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances. Including callable bonds may increase the interest rate risk of a bond ladder. Bonds may be called prior to maturity, which could result in lower yields with new investments.

In March 2003, I helped my friend Fred Ulayyet for one day at his office.

Now, we have over 22,000 clients, five offices, a dozen agents, and a dozen staff. My work was not the only reason this agency grew. Everyone at the agency worked hard and helped build our reputation as an insurance agency that really cares about every client.

The Bible tells us it is faith alone in Jesus Christ that saves, but what does that mean and how do we know if we have it?

I’ve heard it said that faith has three steps: cognition, conviction, and confidence.

Think for a moment of an alien that comes to earth and has never seen a stool before.

To explain a stool to him, you’d start by describing the materials it’s made out of and how its construction allows it to support a large amount of weight without collapsing. Slowly, the alien begins to understand what the stool is.

That’s cognition.

Then, you sit on the stool and it doesn’t collapse. You stand and jump on it and it remains solid. You explain that you’ve sat on this stool for years, and it’s always supported your weight. The alien believes you, and believes in the stool’s ability to hold weight. He now has conviction.

The last step is confidence. The alien won’t be fully confident in the stool until he has sat on it himself. He does so and

William Joseph Van Allen, age 69, of Cedar Lake, IN, formerly of South Holland, IL. Entered into rest peacefully March 27, 2025 and was born into life June 3, 1955 in Chicago, IL. Loving husband of Patti Maksoudian, nee Tallman, married on February 16, 2018 in Crown Point, IN. Beloved father of Jennifer Van Allen (Jorge Calvente), Timothy Van Allen, and William Van Allen Jr. His most special treasure was his granddaughter, Celeste Ivy Calvente. Dear brother of Kathleen (late Robert) Kalmes of Dyer, IN, Joseph Van Allen of Schererville, IN, the late Janet Van Allen, and late Timothy Van Allen. William was previously married to Debbie Kortum Patten. He will also be dearly missed by his nephews, cousins, extended family, and many friends that he has made over the years. Preceded in death by his parents William L. and Margaret G. (nee Anderson) Van Allen.

William was raised in South Holland Illinois and attended St Jude the Apostle Grammar school, Mendel Catholic High School and graduated from Thornton Township High School in 1974. He worked for 14 years for South Holland Public Works and as a firefighter paramedic in the South Holland Fire Department. Later he was employed with DeYoung Furniture as a warehouse manager. His last position was as a courier for Rubino, Rubin, Crosmer and Polen law firm in Dyer Indiana, he retired in 2020. He has lived in the Cedar Lake community since 2012. William enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons, watching and attending Cubs, Chicago Bears, and

Blackhawks games, as well as traveling with his family for vacations.

David Earl Hawkins Caldwell Williams of Steger, IL, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2025, in Dyer, Indiana. He was born December 6, 1946, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Rev. Jimmy A. Williams (Adopted Father) and Mildred Ruth (Hawkins).

Also (father) Rev. Conway Caldwell and (adopted mother) Mary Francine Caldwell.

David’s family moved to the South Side of Chicago, IL in 1955.

He grew up in a family dedicated to God with his father being a reverend, they regular attended church.

His mother was dedicated to raising the family and providing a loving home.

They had a large family with their mother having 9 children.

David attended Wendell Philips Academy High School. He married his sweetheart, Katherine Mary (Smith) November 1966.

Shortly later, the family began to grow. They purchased their first home in Roseland.

He later purchased their first new construction home in Matteson, IL, where David and Katherine raised their family.

David worked at the steel mills in Chicago and the Ford Stamping Plant in his younger years.

He later had a call to go into Government Law Enforcement. He decided to attend Triton College and Technical Institute to seek certifications in Professional Skills for Police Officers and Basic Firearms.

David acquired additional training and certifications with the Park Forest Police with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Board. He has certified with the Multi-Regional Criminal Justice Training and Education Project. In 1982, he completed training and certification with Park Forest South Police Department’s Reserve Police.

David worked in the enforcement field for a decade before getting the entrepreneur’s spirit to open a trucking company. He attended Diesel Truck Driving Training School in Wisconsin and soon purchased his first truck. Then on the road he went.

He enjoyed driving and

seeing the country. He retired from the trucking business after 20 years. David’s past times were enjoying a quiet afternoon fishing and going to the casino where he enjoyed the game of poker by battling wits with other card players.

He will be deeply missed.

David was preceded in death by three sisters Doris, Mildred, and Ocarina Williams, six brothers Jimmy, Monroe, Shaver, Silas, Joe Williams, and Grant Caldwell.

His memories will be cherished by his wife of 59 years, Katherine Mary (Smith), children, Mary Francine Williams, Janice (Philip) Newman, and David Earl Caldwell-Williams.

Eight Grandchildren: Da’Quincey (Jessica) Williams, Da’Tron Williams, Brian, Victoria, Matthew Jemilo, David Townsend, Sir Patrick Montgomery, and Sahara W-Bush, and four greatgrandchildren, Liam, Leena, Lee, and Layla Williams.

His memories will be cherished by his siblings: sisters Margaret Williams and Linda CaldwellBazemore, brothers Robert Williams, Joe Caldwell, Charles Caldwell, Joe Caldwell, and Charles Caldwell.

Alice Jewel Fletcher Washington, affectionately known as “Nana,” passed away on March 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on July 21, 1947, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Otis and Mabel Fletcher, Nana Alice’s faith in Christ was nurtured at Mt Zion Baptist Church under the guidance of Rev. A. R. Burns and First Lady Mrs. Mary Burns from a young age. She was a gifted pianist and organist, possessing the remarkable ability to read music.

Nana Alice dedicated her musical talents to serving her church communities, playing for Hammond Church, Lawndale CRC, and Pullman CRC. Alice obtained her early education through the Hammond Public School system, where she also earned her high school diploma in June 1965. Later, she pursued an Associate degree in Business at Calumet College. Shortly after graduating, Nana Alice met and fell in love with Henry W. Washington (predeceased). She was and is Henry’s beloved Alice.

Their union blessed them with the birth of Kimberly

and Jeffrey.

Nana Alice’s professional career spanned over three decades, during which she diligently served in the Hammond City Clerk’s office. Her contributions extended beyond the city hall, as she briefly worked in the Hammond School District.

Alice, a remarkable woman of God, deeply cherished her family and friends. She found solace in the beauty of flowers and the comforting taste of Subway tuna sandwiches. As a devoted wife, mother, Nana, Auntie, and friend, Alice’s love for her family burned with an unwavering passion.

Alice, a symbol of love and cherished memories, maintained close bonds with her school friends, Ms. Cora, Ms. Jane, Ms. Rhoda, and Ms. Judy, for over five decades. Their lunches together reminded them of their youthful days, as they once again resembled schoolgirls. Alice cherished these memories deeply. She embarked on wonderful vacations when they were younger with her husband, children, and brother. As her children grew older, Alice continued to travel with them. Alice’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love for God, travel, and her family.

On Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 9:25 pm, Alice peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home. Our hearts shattered as we realized she was ready to reunite with her beloved husband, Henry, her grandson, Connor, and all her departed loved ones.

While they eagerly welcomed her to the afterlife, our hearts were broken with grief and sorrow. Alice leaves us with the precious gift of her love and cherished memories.

We will forever hold in our hearts the memories created and cherish our time with her. Rest now, Nana, our precious and fragile flower.

We will love and miss you forever and ever. Our hearts

are heavy with love for you.
