Time: A key element of investing SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Who knows where the time goes? We’ve reached the end of another year, so it’s appropriate to reflect on the nature of time and how it affects us. And time certainly is a key element in the pursuit of your financial goals. As an investor, time can be your greatest ally. If you hold some investments for the long term, you could achieve an impressive cumulative growth in value. Furthermore, if you keep adding shares to these investments, possibly through a dividend reinvestment plan, you could attain “growth on growth” through the power of compounding. Of course, when you own equity investments, you will experience market fluctuations, but in general, the longer you hold these investments, the more you can reduce the effects of market volatility. But you also need to consider aspects of time in these contexts: • Checking progress on achieving goals – When you establish a goal, such as saving for a child’s education or your own retirement, you know the end date of when you’ll need the money, but it’s also important to mark your progress along the way. So, each year, see how far along you are in meeting your goal. If you’re falling behind, you may need to adjust your investment mix. • Choosing an appropriate strategy – The time needed to achieve a goal should drive your investment strategy for that goal. For example, when you are saving for a retirement that won’t happen for three or four decades, you will need to invest for growth by placing a reasonable percentage of equities and equity-based investments in your portfolio, based on your comfort with the various types of risk, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. You will experience some bumps along the way — keep in mind that the value of investments will

fluctuate and the loss of some or all principal is possible — but you likely have time to overcome the “down” periods. On the other hand, when you are saving for a short-term goal, such as a vacation or a new car or a wedding, you’ll want a set amount of money available precisely when you need it. In this case, you may need to sacrifice some growth potential for investments whose principal value won’t fluctuate, such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and bonds. Keep in mind, though, that when you’re investing for long- and short-term goals, it doesn’t have to be just one strategy or the other. You can save for retirement with primarily growth vehicles but still have room in your portfolio for shorterterm instruments. And even when you’re specifically investing for some short-term goal, you can’t forget about your need to save and invest for retirement. And here’s one final point about the relationship between time and investing: Your risk tolerance can, and probably will, change over the years. As you near retirement, you may feel the need to adjust your portfolio toward a more conservative approach. That’s because you may want to consolidate any gains you might have achieved while also recognizing that you simply have less time to bounce back from down markets. Still, even in retirement, you’ll need some growth potential in your portfolio to help you stay ahead of inflation. When you invest, one of your biggest considerations is time — so use it wisely. WASHINGTON, DC — As the holiday season reaches its peak, the U.S. Postal Service is ensuring a seamless and joyful delivery experience for millions across the nation. Unprecedented Preparations for Holiday Deliveries • In anticipation of the holiday rush, the Postal Service planned early and leveraged key investments, thanks to its Delivering for America plan, which has significantly expanded daily processing capacity to 70 million packages. Delivering for America implementation since 2021 has included the installation of 348 new package sorting machines and the modernization of processing facilities and delivery networks. • USPS Ground Advantage service has been introduced to provide an affordable and simple way to send packages in the United States in 2-5 business days that optimizes the Postal Service’s shift to more reliable ground transportation. • To assist the American public, the Postal Service announced in September that there will be no holiday surcharges when shipping with USPS, ensuring more affordable shipping options throughout the holiday season. Bolstered Workforce Stands Ready to Deliver • Over 150,000 employees nationwide have been converted to full-time career positions with USPS since 2020, stabilizing our dedicated workforce and requiring only an additional 10,000 seasonal hires. • Extended working hours, including early a.m. deliveries in select markets, have been implemented to ensure timely deliveries. Innovative Solutions for Customer Convenience • Customers can enjoy streamlined tracking and customer service tools at usps.com, providing real-time updates and peace of mind during the holiday rush.

• With Click-N-Ship, customers can print labels and ship packages with ease from the comfort of their home or office and even schedule free package pickup by their letter carrier for the next delivery day. • Informed Delivery offers convenient options for managing deliveries and tracking parcels, and provides a Daily Digest that previews incoming mail and packages arriving soon. Commitment to Secure and Timely Service • Announced in May, Project Safe Delivery is a USPS initiative to combat attacks on letter carriers and mail theft incidents and protect postal employees and the security of the nation’s mail and packages. • The Postal Service reminds customers that metallic mercury and devices containing metallic mercury are always prohibited in the mail. This includes items such as thermometers, barometers, blood pressure monitors and similar devices. For more information, read “Mercury Remains Prohibited in the Mail” in the online USPS Newsroom. A Word From the Postmaster General “Our extensive preparations and dedicated team are committed to Delivering for America and ensuring exceptional service, affordability and reliability during this holiday season and beyond,” said Postmaster General and CEO Louis DeJoy. Stay Informed and Prepared • Customers are encouraged to send their mail and packages early and utilize the Postal Service’s recommended holiday mailing and shipping dates, available at about.usps.com/ holidaynews/mail-by-dates/. • For more helpful resources, tools and expert advice to make holiday mailing and shipping more convenient, visit the USPS Holiday Newsroom at usps.com/holidaynews.

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, ESV). An angel gave this instruction to Joseph before Jesus was born. The Hebrew name for Jesus is “Yeshua.” It means “Yahweh saves.” Yahweh came in Jesus to save us from our sins. Jesus saves us from the guilt of sin. Romans 3:23 says “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Our sinful condition and the unbelief, disobedience, self-centeredness, and idol-worship that arise from it leave us guilty before God. We deserve his death penalty. But Jesus stepped into our place as a perfect human to live the life we should have lived and die the death we deserve to die. When we cry out to God to forgive us and receive us as his children, we discover our guilty record expunged because God punished Jesus in our place. Instead, God declares us righteous, based on Christ’s perfect record in our place. Jesus saves us from the power of sin. The hymn “O For a Thousand Tongues” says, “He breaks the power of cancelled sin, he sets the prisoner free.” When God accepts and adopts us as his children, he also sends the Holy Spirit to live in us. The Holy Spirit, not our destructive desires and patterns, is now in the driver’s seat. He empowers us to say “No” to sin and “Yes” to Jesus. Jesus saves us from the consequences of sin – all the misery and evil that flooded into our world when Adam and Eve rebelled against God. That includes cancer, the effects of aging, mental illness, hatred, oppression, loss, grief, and death itself. One day, Jesus will return to make all things new, including you. HAPPY NEW YEAR! With NewYear’s fast approaching, what better resolution to set for yourself than to get started on saving for retirement? Financial coach Jeannie Dougherty offers some tips on how you can get started saving for your retirement this upcoming year. The first step, she says, is to understand what your goal retirement would look like. “If you want to get started on your retirement savings, let’s start with your vision of what you would like for your retirement. Having enough money and spending how you want to is an excellent start to envisioning a comfortable retirement,” Dougherty states. The next step is to analyze your spending habits and find where you could start putting money away into savings. “Looking at your spending habits now is essential to see where you could start putting some money away. You could save 10% of every dollar in a 401K, a Real Estate Savings account, or an investment brokerage account. A crucial part of saving for retirement is to actually save that money and to not take it out and spend it beforehand. Dougherty shares, “Once you start saving, the next step is to ensure you “don’t do early withdrawals” unless needed. You would focus on your monthly spending plan and ensure

you have your first month of expenses in your checking account in case of unplanned expenses. This way, you are less likely to dip into your savings if at least one month of costs are covered. Three and six-month spending plans can be put in a high-yield savings account where you can earn 3% interest. Check your statements online and see how well you are doing. That will help you keep up the good habits.” Saving for retirement should not be something that is put off until later in life. The best way to get ahead is to start now however you can. Speaking Of Seniors

KNAPCZYK

A Nice Note WOODROW WILCOX On December 12, 2023, a client brought a nice note to the Merrillville office with a onepage document. The note said, “Mr. Wilcox, Thank you for all the help you gave me. They (the insurance company) finally paid the bill. Thanks again.” Our client’s Medicare supplement insurance company accidentally failed to pay one claim to a local hospital for services in March 2023. It paid all the other bills it was obligated to pay. But it missed one. I phoned the insurance company with our client on August 23, 2023 and got the representative to see and admit that the insurance company made a mistake in failing to pay the final $875.10 that it owed. The representative estimated it would take 30 days to correct. It took a little more than 60 days to correct. On November 10, 2023, the final check was cut and the hospital was paid.

The client got help from our agency to connect with his insurance company in a positive way to prod them to notice the mistake and correct it. We helped the client AT NO CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all clients with medical bill problems without charging anything. The Medicare system does not work perfectly. It is easier for us to spot problems and solutions than our clients. We give this help to demonstrate to our clients that we really do care for them and want to treat them fairly. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by correcting medical bill problems. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered from book stores or online.

Sims to giveaway 300 Ring cameras to seniors CHICAGO – State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. is donating Ring Video Doorbells – as well as installation and a lifetime subscription – to 300 seniors in the community in partnership with Amazon and Phalanx Family Services this holiday season. “Providing local seniors with Ring doorbell cameras is an important safety initiative to provide our aging neighbors with the security they deserve,” said Sims (D-Chicago). “Many older adults live alone, are away from their family, or may have trouble making it to the door. Using a Ring camera will help give them information they need about who is visiting their homes.” Sims is giving away 300 Ring Video Doorbells to keep seniors safe. The video doorbells feature

a built-in camera and two-way talk, so people can hear and see whomever is at their door. The video doorbell also can send notifications to a phone or tablet when someone is at the door. Residents who receive a camera from Sims will also be gifted free installation, as well as a lifetime monitoring subscription that will be covered by Amazon. To be eligible, seniors must live in the 17th Senate District, have internet capability, and have a hard wire hook up where their current doorbell is. Y? WHY NOT!

“RE”Time: Review, Reflect, and Reset

Say I saw it in The Shopper

Set the Menu for a SuccessfulYear

by Janice R Newman It’s the end of the year and the last article for 2023. Christmas is out of the way, and the New Year is fast approaching. Typically, during this last week of the year it’s bittersweet because we’re saying goodbye to 2023 and to what we experience and know, to venture out into the unknown of 2024, a new season of our lives. December 31st, we say “Sayonara” (Japanese word for goodbye) to 2023, and on January 1st we start to make the hopeful “New Year’s Resolutions”. Unfortunately, for most, in a few weeks, we lose enthusiasm for the resolutions, and they fade to oblivion. To avoid them disappearing, we are going to work on several “RE” time words to help. Working on “RE” word activities is a good method for developing different aspects of your life to create a better you and discover the motivation to make the necessary changes. “RE” is a prefix that means again or anew. The activities will instruct us on how to look at something again or make it anew to prepare us for the future. The “RE” Time activity this month is to Review, Reflect, and Reset. First, it’s necessary to REVIEW the past year. When you review the past, don’t relive your life or the emotional experience with it. Looking back is for recon only. Review to take notes and inventory of 2023. Write down your progress in reaching your goals. Review your finances with debts, retirement plans, and budget. Review events and status in your relationships, employment, career, health, education, and spiritual life. Write down the where, who, what, and when of each aspect of your life. This provides clarity on your current situation. Also, note your achievements: big and small. This allows you to celebrate your accomplishments. The second is now to REFLECT on the past year. Dive into the why and how of events, reflecting on the reasons behind goal attainment or shortfall, and what can we learn from this year. By examining the past,

you gain valuable insights for self-reflection and personal growth, helping you identify patterns that contributed to success or hindered progress. Address areas that need improvement. It’s crucial to be objective and honest with yourself without selfcondemnation, recognizing that imperfections and setbacks are part of everyone’s journey. Don’t be critical of yourself, if it wasn’t a spectacular year or you need to make vast improvements to engage change. No one is perfect, and mistakes or setbacks truly happen to everyone. The third is to RESET to start the new year. Utilize the information from reviewing and reflecting to learn lessons from the past, formulate new strategies for overcoming obstacles, and develop motivation to achieve better results. How can you improve your life to create a better version of yourself? Let these new strategies inspire positive changes, to move you towards a more fulfilling amazing life. Next, reset back to Day 1 by renewing your mind, restoring your heart, and reengaging with an expected positive attitude by leaving 2023 behind in our memories. Lastly, give praise, and thanksgiving, and express gratitude to the Lord for the gift of life as you embark on a new year. Despite the ups and downs of the past year, anticipate the revealing of God’s plans for you in 2024. Jeremiah 29:11(NIV) reminds us of God’s word, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” As you plan for next year, seek guidance from God, and be receptive to His plans for you, then be quiet, listen, and follow the instructions. May the new year bring forth an abundance of opportunities for growth, fulfillment, and success. Y? Why Not! Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ ywhynotshow
