SSC First to Launch Program in South Cook County in Partnership with Pace Bus in Free* CDL Permit Training South Suburban College (SSC) and Pace Bus are pleased to announce their partnership to provide a free CDL Class B commercial driver’s license permit course for the next generation of professional bus operators in the Chicago Southland region.

The college and transportation agency have teamed up to offer a customized two-week period to assist qualified applicants in obtaining their CDL permit. To remove financial barriers for students to pursue and complete the program actively, Pace will cover the costs of tuition, training, books, fees, and other expenses associated with the program. In addition, in partnership with Pace, SSC’s Work Equity Initiative will provide additional support and resources to students completing the Pace training.

On January 17, 2023, South Suburban College will host a pre-hire event for job seekers to meet with Pace staff. During the 3-hour event, which begins at 6 pm, applicants will complete a screening process which includes application completion, an assessment questionnaire, and a background check. All candidates must bring a valid Illinois driver’s license and a DMV or Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) (also called Driving Record Abstracts in Illinois) with no more than two infractions or tickets in the last five years.

Assessment results will be available 2-4 days after the event, when candidates must complete an Illinois Department of Transportation physical and drug screening. Pace will cover the cost of these screenings. Candidates who pass these screenings will be enrolled in a training course that will take place in February at South Suburban College.

In a meeting on Tuesday, November 22, SSC President Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, SSC Vice President of Academic Services Dr. Tasha Williams, Pace Safety and Training Manager Sharri Pappas, and Pace Chief Operating Officer Lindsey Umek, celebrated the

successful partnership between the two entities as it will be the first for the South Suburbs. “I am excited to have SSC be the first in this area to launch an opportunity of this magnitude. At SSC, we are dedicated to providing high-quality education, training, and services for all individuals who can benefit from our programs. In addition, we want to provide accessible and affordable programs to a diverse community of learners in collaboration with local businesses. Our partnership with Pace Bus embodies all of these key tenets,” stated SSC President Dr. Stokes.

“Pace offers rewarding careers and a path to success for people who are passionate about public service. We are thrilled to partner with South Suburban College on this effort,” said Pace Executive Director Melinda Metzger. “Offering this free course creates a win-win for everyone. Those looking for a new career get access to the free instruction they need, and Pace gets the operators it needs to keep providing the essential service our region relies on.”

The program will run through SSC’s Continuing Education Program, with classes being offered at its main campus. Dr. Matt Beasland, Executive Director of the Oak Forest Center, stated, “The program is a first in this region, and we are excited to bring this opportunity to the local community. The opportunity will provide jobs and livable wages with minimum pay starting at $20.00”.

Qualified candidates who complete the two-week will transition to a six-week on-the-job training with Pace. Pondering My Blessing MIKE BUDER In my first year in the real estate business (1981) a young couple wanting to buy their first home walked into our office looking for an agent to help them. That was my floor time day, so I was happy to talk with them. They looked and seemed young – and they were – not even twenty yet. They were expecting their first baby and were such a nice young couple. The young man was such an earnest guy wanting to find a home for his wife and soon to be 1st child. We talked for sometime and it was clear to me they couldn’t afford much. Our normal sale at that time was between $40,000 and $60,000 and I knew they were not going to be able to afford anything in our local market. They loved the area but it just wasn’t possible by a long shot. But I didn’t want to burst their bubble at that point because maybe they had some folks that could help them out.

I set the young couple up with a lender to get qualified and suggested that they call me once they knew what their budget was going to be.

Several days later the earnest young man called me back and was proud as he could be to say they could afford to buy a home around $15,000. I had no idea where to find a home in that price range in our area since it just didn’t exist in our market. The young man said he drove by a home in a mobile home park some miles away and saw a home priced at $14,000, could they see it today?

I was a bit taken back as I’d never sold a mobile home before and wasn’t sure at all what that was all about. I took a moment to talk with my broker (my Dad at the time) and he assured me we could handle a mobile home sale. So off I went to look at this tiny

home with the couple! They fell in love with it and saw it as their 1st castle! I remember thinking-How cool is this! We wrote up a contract on the spot and proceeded to move forward. But…all heck broke loose as it wasn’t so easy to find financing for a mobile home of this size and age. Somehow, we made it all come together. This young couple was so grateful to have someone care enough to see it through with them. Over the years, this couple has bought and sold three more homes and referred other clients to me.

On the day we closed, I became so aware that it didn’t matter so much as the price of the home but rather helping a truly sincere couple find their “dream home”. It was a big gift to both of us. To this day I’ve never run across quite another scenario like this one but I’ve never forgotten it. When our local market took a dive from 2007 until 2014, I was able to help many folks through some pretty tough times and I’m glad that I could regardless of whether or not the big checks followed at the closings. I knew I had the skill and experience to help folks in need and honestly, I have been personally blessed and am thankful for the 42 years in this business that I have been blessed to be a blessing to others…

My Letter to Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn WOODROW WILCOX On December 7, 2022, I wrote a letter to Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College.

I am 68 and do not want what I know about this to die when I do. I want to work with Hillsdale to help educate the people who serve seniors like insurance agents, ministers, and social service people.

Bishop Noll student receives fouryear, full-tuition Lilly Scholarship Bishop Noll Institute senior Maria Emilia Quiroga arrived at school Wednesday ready for a typical day. She read the school’s morning announcements over the P.A. system, as she does often, with no idea that one special announcement would soon change her life.

Quiroga, a leader on Bishop Noll’s Speech Team and an integral part of its Campus Ministry program, finished the announcements, then led the school in prayer.

Soon after, BNI Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick took to the microphone to share the exciting news with the school that Quiroga had been awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.

The award provides four years of full tuition, required fees and a yearly book stipend for any public or private Indiana college or university.

“I feel so blessed to have earned a scholarship that allows me to focus on my education without the financial burden,” Quiroga said.

On hand for the presentation and delivering flowers to Quiroga was Jodi Kateiva from the Legacy Foundation, which administers the Lilly Scholarship program in Lake County. Quiroga is one of only six Lake County current seniors to receive the scholarship and is Bishop Noll’s 13th Lilly Scholar since the statewide program began in 1998.

“I’m really proud of all the achievements that have led me here, big and small,” she said.

“Whether it was speaking at Bishop Noll’s Centennial gala or getting an A on my sophomore English test that I studied for. Every single thing and achievement that I’ve had here at BNI has led me to this, and I’m so grateful.

“I’m excited for all the opportunities ahead and all the doors that have opened. I am also so extremely grateful for all the teachers and faculty at Bishop Noll who have helped me get this scholarship. This was not an effort I made alone.

Most importantly, I would love to thank my mom, who is the reason for all my achievements. I don’t have words in my vocabulary to thank her.”

Quiroga’s talents shine at Bishop Noll, where she serves as a Student Ambassador and is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Women’s Empowerment Club, Hispanic Student Union, Biology Club and the dance team. A resident of Schererville and a graduate of St. Thomas More School in Munster, she plans to study marketing in college.

Bishop Noll Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick said Quiroga encompasses what she wants all BNI students to be.

“She pushes herself, she perseveres, and she does so with grace and humility as she genuinely

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars participate in the Lilly Scholars Network, which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. The Book of Ruth in the Bible is a great love story. A God-sized love story. It points to the ultimate love story of God coming in Christ to redeem us for eternal fellowship with him.

Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem at harvest time.

God, in his kindness, gave widows and the poor the constitutional right to glean. God’s law required that farmers leave the edges of their fields for the poor and the widows.

When workers dropped or missed some grain, they could not go back for it. They had to leave it for the poor and the widow. In this way, God graciously provided for two human needs: the need to eat and to work (Leviticus 19:9; Deuteronomy 24:19).

This provision depended on farmers who trusted and loved their God, obeyed his law, and shared his heart for the poor.

Ruth goes out to glean. She ends up in the field of Boaz, a good man who shares God’s heart for the poor. Boaz tells Ruth he knows about her loyal love to her mother-in-law.

He exclaims, “a full reward be given you by the LORD under whose wings you have come to find refuge!” (Ruth 2:12b, ESV). Then he becomes the ‘garden hose’ of God’s goodness to her. Ruth goes home to the astonished Naomi with a bushel of barley and leftover lunch from Boaz.

Later, Boaz assumes the legal status of ‘redeeming relative’ (go-el) to marry Ruth, provide for Ruth and Naomi, buy back the farm that belonged to their dead husbands, and raise up a legal heir for the family.

Soon, Naomi stands beaming, holding a grandchild. The Lord has filled and restored the bitter Naomi through the loyal love of Ruth and Boaz.

SSC to Host Work Equity Initiative Virtual Open House in December South Holland, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting a virtual open house for the Work Equity Initiative (WEI) Sponsored programs via Zoom on December 14, 2022, at 5:00 pm. The open house will allow the public to gain more information on the WEI Sponsored Programs such as Community Health Worker, Barbering, Basic Nursing Assistant, Solar Photovoltaic, Forklift, Patient Care Technician, and Pharmacy Technician.

The WEI project is designed to create, support, and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high-need areas. The project is anticipated to yield impactful outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and local businesses through new programs, expanded access, opportunity, and support services. The WEI grant provides wrap-around services,

including comprehensive financial assistance and academic support to participating students within various program areas providing stackable credentials.

The community is invited to learn about the benefits of the WEI Sponsored Programs and certificate tracks. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My daughter is selling her home and the Realtor told her to keep the utilities on. This sounds foolish with no one living in the house. Is this bad advice?

Answer: You are doing a transaction worth thousands of dollars. Not having heat, air conditioning or water on could potentially damage the home and make the buyers walking through the home uncomfortable in a very cold or hot home. Buyers may also wonder if the utilities including water and plumbing have major problems.

The utilities should be left on if you expect to sell the home in a timely fashion and reasonable price. Most buyers hire an inspector to determine the condition of the home’s major components. If the utilities, including water and sewer, are not on, the working order cannot be verified.

We have had buyers walk away from their sale due to sellers who refused to turn on

utilities. They felt this was a huge red flag as to the condition of the property.

We don’t blame them. I would never buy a home without a thorough home inspection.

Most Real estate sales contracts that we have seen, have a paragraph stating that utilities must be on for the inspection.

If you are thinking of selling your home, then think correctly and leave the utilities on.

The cost is minimal in a vacant home, and it eliminates many red flags concerning the condition of the property.

Mary S. Furuyama, nee Yamamoto, age 92, of South Holland, IL passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022. Beloved wife for 65 years of the late Charles M. Furuyama. Chuck and Mary first met at a dance in Chicago and then bumped into each other days later at a fabric store where Chuck worked. He offered her a job and 9 months later they were married.

They loved spending vacations in Florida, first in Cocoa Beach and then in Marco Island where they spent winters with close friends. Loving mother of Ron Furuyama, Kim (Mike Munoz) Furuyama, and Lyn (Steve) Munson. Devoted grandmother of Leah (Austin) Markward, Sarah Munson, Charlie Munoz and Suki Munoz. Dear sister of Ruth Sasaki and preceded in death by her brothers Shiroshi Yamamoto, Shigeto Yamamoto, George Yamamoto, Gene Yamamoto, Goro Yamamoto, Georgine Sowa and Margaret Yee. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews and loved by so many more. Mary shared her faithful love and exuberance for the Lord with everyone around her. She also loved to garden and cook for her family. Mary was continuously supportive of those around her, regularly showing enthusiasm for her loved ones in their times of joy. She was a lover of animals, starting with her childhood living on a farm – her favorites were their goats, and known for having many cats throughout her lifetime. With her husband Chuck she also had dogs and rescued a squirrel. In short, Mary was a lover of people and animals, always extending a warm smile and helping hand.

U.S. dairy industry poised to grow

By DANIEL GRANT - FarmWeek Milk demand is projected to grow by 21% globally between 2020 and 2030, according to Matt Daley, president of GEA Farm Technologies.

And he believes much of that demand could be met by U.S. dairy farmers.

“With more people, more dairy is consumed,” Daley said this month at the Agricultural Bankers Conference in Omaha, Nebraska. “What’s amazing is we’re doing it with fewer cows.

“A dairy cow in the U.S. produces two to three times more milk because there’s more sunshine and greater access to grains (than other parts of the world).”

The world population reached an estimated 8 billion people as of Nov. 15, a new milestone in human development. The rising population and a growing middle class in some areas likely will drive increased demand for dairy products.

But with tighter environmental regulations in Europe, dairy output could actually decrease in that part of the world. Daley believes dairy expansion is also unlikely in New Zealand.

“Who’s slated around the world to produce more milk? It’s us in the U.S.,” he said.

Technology and automation will be critical for U.S. farmers to continue to boost milk output with fewer cows. GEA manufactures about 25% of robotic milking technology in North America, according to Daley.

“As long as we can expand processing capabilities, we’ll produce more milk, because the world needs it,” he said. “As labor continues to get tighter, more automation will come.”

GEA is quoting plans for new dairy plants in Nebraska, Kentucky and Georgia and three new whey distilleries are going up in the U.S. DEA is also building more concentration facilities, which separate the milk and can lower shipping costs by 70%.

A strong appetite for dairy is also driving local demand, which bodes well for small dairies looking for niche markets.

“The last four or five years, we’ve never put in so many small cheese plants,” Daley said. “The craft cheese industry is booming. A lot of dairy farmers are making their own cheese and selling it locally.”

If you’ve never heard of DEA Farm Technologies, chances are you’ve eaten food produced with its technology or at a plant it built. DEA is one of the world’s largest system suppliers for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors.

“We do food on a small and massive scale,” Daley said.

“Every third chicken nugget in the world is produced with GEA technology. If you eat cheese, GEA technology likely sliced it and put it in the package.”

About a quarter of processed milk in the world comes from GEA or is processed with its equipment.
