SSC Men’s Basketball Team Ranked the Number One Team in the Country by the NJCAA Division II Pre-Season Poll

South Suburban College (SSC) men’s basketball team was ranked number one in the newest NJCAA Division II Pre-Season Poll. The 2021-2022 team had a historic season, winning the only National Championship in SSC history. They were also the only undefeated NJCAA Division II team in history to win the national championship while being undefeated. During basketball Coach John Pigatti’s 16 seasons, the team has amassed a 463-85 record.

Pigatti stated, “We are honored to be the pre-season number one ranked team in the country. It is a tribute to last year’s team and all of the prior teams. They have established a great tradition of winning here at SSC. We are excited about starting the new season. We have a lot of new players and look forward to challenges that

lie ahead.”

The Bulldogs will open the 2022-2023 season on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulldogs will return four players from last year’s undefeated national Championship team. The team will vie for its 13th regional and national championship tournament appearance.

If you are interested in participating in the Men’s Basketball program, please get in touch with Coach Pigatti at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2524. The South Suburban College Main Campus is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. The college’s extension site, the Oak Forest Center, is located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue, Oak Forest, Illinois.

Illinois COVID-related mortgage assistance program to reopen Nov. 1

The state will reopen a mortgage assistance program for pandemic-impacted homeowners on Nov. 1.

The Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund, run through the Illinois Housing Development Authority, provides up to $30,000 in assistance to homeowners through payments made directly to mortgage servicers, taxing bodies or other approved entities.

The program is funded through an appropriation from the federal American Rescue Plan Act and can be used for past-due mortgage payments and up to three months of future payments. The funding can also be used for delinquent property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, condominium or homeowner association fees, and mobile home lot rent.

Funds received do not need to be repaid.

More information is available at illinoishousinghelp.org/ilhaf, and the application portal will be open from Nov. 1 through the end of January 2023.

“The state of Illinois is committed to ensuring that homeowners who are struggling due to this terrible pandemic can stay in their home,” IHDA Executive Director Kristin Faust said in a news release. “We designed the ILHAF program to ensure the most vulnerable households are prioritized in order to stave off foreclosure to ensure they are given the opportunity to become current on their monthly housing expenses.”

To qualify, Illinois homeowners must:

• Have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic after Jan. 21, 2020, or a hardship that began before

that date and continued afterward.

• Currently own and occupy the home in the state as their primary residence.

• Be at least 30 days late on their monthly housing payment.

• Have a household income at or below 150 percent of the area median income.

• Be able to demonstrate they have either communicated with their mortgage provider about their inability to pay or sought counseling with a federally approved counseling organization.

Individuals who participated in a previous round of mortgage assistance may apply again in the upcoming round, but the maximum amount a person can receive is $30,000 cumulatively.

As of Sept. 22, the state had approved $20.5 million in assistance through the program with 1,840 approved applications, according to IHDA. The average assistance amounted to $12,732 per household. Another 3,721 applications had been submitted to the servicer, 1,485 were under review, and 6,948 had been denied.

IHDA and its housing partners will hold information sessions on the program, and a schedule is posted online at illinoishousinghelp.org. Information can also be obtained by contacting the ILHAF hotline at 1-866-454-3571.

Don’t overlook importance of cash

If you’re an investor, you no doubt pay a great deal of attention to your stocks, bonds and mutual funds. But you shouldn’t forget another key element of your financial strategy: cash.

Cash is part of any financial strategy and investment portfolio, but how much have you thought about the different uses of cash, and how much you really need? Consider these four key purposes:

• Unexpected expenses and emergencies –

If you face an interruption in employment, you need an extensive home repair or you encounter an unplanned medical expense, you may need access to cash. If you’re not retired, it’s a good idea to have three to six months of living expenses in cash, possibly supplemented by access to a line of credit. If you’re already retired, keeping up to three months of living expenses in cash, possibly supplemented by a credit line, is a good rule of thumb.

• Specific short-term savings goals – You may have some goals you want to meet within the next year or two, such as a wedding, a vacation or the purchase of a new car. And since you have a little more time to meet these needs than you would for an emergency, you might consider using a money market account or a short-term certificate of deposit (CD), in addition to your other savings vehicles.

• Everyday spending – You’ll always need cash to provide for your day-to-day spending needs, such as your mortgage, other debts, groceries, utilities, entertainment and so on.

If you haven’t already done so, you might want to create a budget, which could help highlight areas in which you can reduce spending to free up funds for investing in

long-term goals. If you’re still working, keeping one to two months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid account may be sufficient, but if you’re retired, you may need up to 12 months of living expenses, which you can adjust to accommodate outside sources, such as Social Security or a pension.

• Source of investment – You can look at cash as an investment source in two different ways. First, cash can be considered its own distinct asset class, and because it typically behaves differently from other asset classes, it can provide some diversification to a portfolio containing stocks and bonds. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.)

And second, the cash in your portfolio could be used as part of a systematic investing strategy in which you put set amounts of money at regular intervals into investment vehicles that are appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance.

Clearly, cash is an important part of planning for the future, but there can be too much of a good thing. While cash may seem like a perpetual safe harbor from the stormy investment seas, it is not without risk. If you hold too much cash, you could underfund your longer-term investments — the ones with the growth potential you need to reach some of your most important goals, such as a comfortable retirement.

Put your cash to work. By using it wisely, you can add a valuable element to your financial picture.

MIKE BUDER

The old adage goes.. I have Good News and I have some Bad News, which would you like to hear first? Heart Smart

We don’t tire of superheroes. That’s why they do so well at the box office. Today’s superheroes are allowed some flaws. That makes them more relatable. But, at the end of the day, they’re still superheroes, using their strengths sacrificially to rescue the vulnerable and defeat the villain.

The church has often ‘Marvel-ized’ key figures in the Bible, turning them into superheroes to admire and imitate. Preachers and teachers, for example, tell the story of how Abraham was willing to sacrifice his beloved son when God told him to. The moral of the story: we need to be like Abraham, willing to surrender what is most precious to us when God says so. Paralyzing fear gripped Israel’s warriors as Goliath the giant trash-talked them and their God. But the shepherd-boy David stood up to him and slew him with a slingshot, because he trusted in God. The moral of the story: we, too, can slay our giants if we trust God as David did. And so on.

It is valuable to highlight the faith and obedience of Bible characters for imitation. But when we turn the Old Testament narratives into a series of stand-alone ‘hero stories’ and focus primarily on their qualities or flaws as positive or negative examples, we miss the point.

We miss what God himself is doing in and through the good, bad, and the ugly of our heroes and their stories. We fail to see that these narratives aren’t stand-alone stories, but scenes in a larger drama where God is the Author and Actor, moving his plan of salvation forward, sometimes through our ‘heroes’, sometimes in spite of them. We miss how each hero and story points to Jesus, the true Hero of Scripture. More on that next week.

October is National Pastor Appreciation Month. Show them some love!

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATES ALL WHO SERVED IN UNIFORM STARTING BACK IN 1919: Veteran’s Day originated as ARMISTICE DAY November 11, 1919, in observance of the end od WW I. The US Congress passeda resolution in 1926 for an annual observation and NOVEMBER 11 became a National Holiday in 1938. The first celebration occurred in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947. Raymond Weeks, a WWII Veteran created National Veteran’s Day which included a parade and other festivities for all Veteran’s. Then November 11, was designated as Armistice Day. Later US Rep Edward Rees of Kansas proposed a bill that would change Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. Congress passed a bill signed by President Dwight Eisenhower establishing Veteran’s Day honoring all Veterans living and dead.

Here are some of the events taking place locally in honor of Veteran’s Day. Real Estate Specialists Real Estate Questions & Answers

Question: Have you had any haunted experiences showing vacant homes?

Answer: A colleague of mine told us this story of what happened to him earlier in his career. He was doing an open house in a vacant home built in the 1940’s. The previous owner had recently died. The family was selling the estate. At the conclusion of the open house, he began shutting off the lights. He was alone — or so he thought. As reached the main level, he saw a dark figure walking towards the main bedroom. A chill ran down his spine because he only had two people show up to the open house, and he saw both drive away. He went into the main bedroom, and no one was there. He checked every room in the house. There was nothing.

He said he was a bit shaken because he knew he saw something. As he went to the door to leave, it was locked, and it would not open. By this time, he was very concerned. As he went to the other door, the dark figure of that slumped man walking away reappeared. The dark man disappeared down the hall. He attempted to open the other door and it too was locked. He said he never locked any doors because it was an open house. He tried windows and they would not open.

He said he then heard a crash from the

other bedroom. His fear made him follow the noise that sounded like a vase had fallen and broken. When he reached the bedroom, he felt a cold chill in the air. Written on the wall of the bedroom in a very eerie looking print, was the sentence: “This is my house.”

He said he did not see these words on the wall when he walked through the home many times previous.

As he went back downstairs, he checked the door again. This time it opened. He went to the other door, and it too was now open. He left the home quickly and saw that black figure of a slumped man walking outside towards an outbuilding.

The owners said they did not come to the open house. There was something wrong and he wanted no part of it. He eventually dropped the listing. He said the home never sold and still stands vacant and in badly deteriorating condition.

A One-two Punch!

Recently, I helped a 95-Year-Old man and his family reduce two medical bills. He is from Gary. Her daughter told me that her mother, the man’s wife, was very worried about the two bills.

One bill was for $4,860.50. I reviewed that bill and found a mistake problem in the bill. I contacted the medical biller, explained their mistake, and asked them to refile the claim with Medicare to correct their mistake and not hurt our client and his family. The firm listened and cooperated with me. That made the bill for $4,862.50 go away.

The second bill was for $1,725.00. That bill was caused by a bad policy of Medicare. Our client needed to be transported from a hospital in Chicago to a rehabilitation firm. Someone at the hospital in Chicago did not accurately describe the choices to the family. They asked the man to be transported to the rehabilitation firm in Crown Point. All the other choices were in Illinois. They wanted the man to be close to family for visiting him. Medicare approved only the first 20 miles of transporting the man. The rest of the trip would be charged to the family. The bill came to $1,725. I think that the Medicare policy of a 20-mile limit is ridiculous. But I

don’t write Medicare rules. We should let a patient recover near home and family.

The ambulance/medical car company did nothing wrong. The bill was caused by Medicare’s 20 miles only coverage policy. I negotiated a compromise bill of $400. I appealed to the transport firm’s sense of wanting to treat the patient and his family with compassion and kindness.

Altogether, I saved our client and his family $6,187.50. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with Medicare related medical bill problems without charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.
