Happy HALLOWEEN! Morgan Park Woman’s Club Celebrates 135th Anniversary CHICAGO, IL – October 18, 2024 – The Morgan Park Woman’s Club (MPWC), the oldest woman’s club still in existence in Chicago, will offer a celebration of the club’s past, present, and future on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Smith Village Senior Living, 2320 West 113th Place, Chicago. The event, “Morgan Park Woman’s Club: 135 Years of Community Service,” will include a brief Power Point presentation on the history of the MPWC and information on the current club. Artifacts from the club’s historical collection, dating back to the 1880s, will be on display. Refreshments will be served. By the mid- to late-1800s, the move from rural to urban lifestyles led to a growing middle class of women with the time and resources to engage in activities outside of the traditional roles in the home. Denied membership in men’s clubs, women formed their own clubs. Throughout the country, women’s clubs started during the Progressive Era of the late 1800s to provide development opportunities for women. The original purpose of selfdevelopment in the arts, music, and literature quickly expanded into social and political causes such as education and libraries;

rights for children, the elderly, and the disabled; conservation and environmental efforts; services for U.S. military veterans; and the suffrage and temperance movements. The MPWC, which started as the Ladies Club of Morgan Park on November 5, 1889, made many contributions to the community. Some of the highlights the program will cover include the club’s role in establishing local PTAs and performing Red Cross work that led to the club winning the Chevron Award. Along the way, the women still found time for enjoyable fundraising social events such as “galloping breakfasts.” By the 1970s, women’s clubs were on the wane. Their very success in establishing women as dynamic leaders eventually led to their downfall, as women finally were welcomed to serve on boards of community organizations. The MPWC persisted through the years that saw many women’s clubs fold. Today, the MPWC structure has adjusted to the needs of contemporary women, offering both socialization and service opportunities. The history of MPWC is the history of the community. This free event will appeal to the public, community leaders, and those interested in history.
