American Farming - Then and Now In 1940, 18 percent of the American workforce was engaged in farming. One farm supplied food for an average of 11 people. In 1940 58% of farm families had 1 car, 33% had electricity and only 25% had a telephone.

The average American farm was 175 acres. In 1942, in answer to wartime, the National Victory Garden Program was launched so more food could be sent overseas to our troops. Victory Gardens also helped prevent food shortages at home during the war. Food rationing took place in the US from 1942-1949. Women at home tended the gardens while the men went off to war. In

the 1940’s and 1950’s, farms moved from horsepower to gas powered tractors. As of 2012, only 1 percent of Americans work on farms, fishing or forestry, and less than 2 percent of Americans engage in farming. The average farm is now 433 acres and 41 percent of the US is farmed. US farms provide 46 percent of the world’s soybeans, 41 percent of the world’s corn, 20.5 percent of the world’s cotton and 13 percent of the world’s wheat!

Jeff Simmons, president and CEO of Elanco Animal Health, believes plant-based meat will have its place in the market for years to come.

But it certainly doesn’t appear to be a major threat to the livestock industry at the checkout aisle.

Simmons projects worldwide demand for animal protein will continue to grow. And, he believes the livestock industry is poised to help address some of the world’s top challenges, including hunger.

“The three big issues right now are food insecurity, a global health crisis and climate,” Simmons said during the Agri-Pulse Ag Outlook Forum in Kansas City on Sept.

26. “Animals are connected to all three. I believe they’re the missing piece to some of the world’s biggest problems right now.”

About 60% of consumers around the world aren’t getting enough calories, leading to food insecurity, or they’re getting the wrong calories, which is contributing to health issues, according to Simmons.

Boosting animal protein output addresses both those issues by reducing food insecurity and increasing the availability of healthy protein choices.

“Animal protein is one of the hottest food segments the last three years, with 50% growth the last 10 years,” Simmons said. “You can’t disconnect consumer choice, calories or the climate.”

Sales of plant-based meat, conversely, could stay flat through 2022 and remain about 1% of the total protein market through 2027, according to Simmons.

Top consumer preferences when choosing their protein include taste, cost and nutrition, he noted.

“Consumers are starting to vote (at the food checkout lane),” Simmons said. “Meat is on demand.”

Erin Borror, vice president of economic analysis for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, noted U.S. beef and pork exports reached a record $18.7 billion in 2021 and could push $20 billion this year.

“Beef exports have surpassed $1 billion six of the last seven months. It really has been demand driven,” Borror said. “We have lots of opportunities.”

The U.S. could see even stronger demand for red meat as the world’s top exporter of pork, the European Union, is projected to reduce output this year by nearly 5% due to disease outbreaks in its herd and policy to reduce animal numbers on farms.

“It’s critical to have a diverse export base,” said Borror, who noted U.S. farmers must be proactive to maintain their premier animal health status. “That’s part of what continues to offer us opportunities as we look ahead.”

Simmons also views climate challenges as an opportunity for the livestock industry.

“With a carbon market, it increases opportunities for ag,” he said. “Climate-neutral cattle farms are achievable by 2030.”

But to get there, he said farmers must do more than tell their story.

“We need action plans on farms,” he said. “Climateneutral farming can happen. I see us changing the game.”

False Promises MIKE BUDER About a year ago I went on a listing appointment. The seller was referred to me by a past client of mine. I thought that would give me the edge against the other Realtor she was talking to…but it didn’t. The listing appointment itself was awesome! I instantly felt comfortable with the client, and she felt comfortable with me because of all the nice things my past client told her about me. She also said that she felt like she already knew me because she had been reading my weekly column over the past few months. I toured the home and now it was time to get down to business. We sat down at the dining room table and I talked to her about my marketing plan, my brand and what I have to offer a seller over my competitors. Then I suggested that she needed to de-clutter just about everywhere and repaint a couple of the bedrooms. She really didn’t like that idea.

Then we talked price and she didn’t like that either. She was hoping for an amount that was approximately 25% higher than the current comps indicated. Even though the market at the time was a faster pace seller’s market than it is today, her house needed some pre-listing attention in order for buyers to give it any serious consideration. She thanked me for coming and we parted ways.

I was pretty sure that she wasn’t going to list with me…I was right. She emailed me the following morning: Sorry Mike, I’m going

with the other Realtor and here are the reasons why…1. He told me that I didn’t need to do anything to get my home ready to list. 2. He said he would sell it for a drastically reduced commission since I am probably buying something else as well. 3.

He said that he could get me the amount that I want for the home and 4. He told me that he can sell it quick! I thanked her for the opportunity to meet with her and wished her well. No harm, no, foul, no worries…You can’t win them all.

Now, fast forward to today (a year later). This house is still on the market, but was recently reduced to a price below my recommended price when we first met.

Oh, and the new photos show the home decluttered a bit. I’m not always right…I’ve had some listings that were a bit off pricing before I got it right. But, for the most part I have been spot on. Sellers, be careful when an agent tells you what you want to hear and promises you the moon!

SSC Will Recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month with Resource Panel and Other Activities Throughout October South Suburban College (SSC) Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), a three-year project supported by a Department of Justice grant, will raise awareness of Domestic Violence in October. The college will host several internal and external activities for SSC students, faculty/ staff, and the general public.

SSC will begin the month with Purple Thursdays and Light in the Window, two initiatives to wear purple clothing and display purple window lights in businesses and homes as an act of solidarity against domestic violence.

SSC students are invited to participate in live and virtual Bystander Intervention Trainings to learn how to intervene should they encounter a domestic violence situation. A virtual “Healthy Relationships” Zoom session on Wednesday, October 12, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm includes facilitators LaSandra Hutchinson and Celeste Angulo from the Anew: Building Beyond Violence & Abuse organization. The facilitators will discuss the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships. The public should register by Tuesday, October 11, at 12:00 pm to Alexandra Glumac at aglumac@ssc.edu.

On Friday, October 21, SSC will host a Dating/Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking Resource Forum & Expo from 8:00 -

11:00 am at the SSC Performing Arts Center.

The FREE event will provide crucial domestic violence resources and is open to SSC students, faculty/staff, and the general public. Attendees will enjoy a continental breakfast, a forum featuring service providers, and opportunities to learn about local resources. Professionals with the following credentials can earn 1.5 CEUs: CDVP and CPAIP, LPC/LCPC, and LSW/LCSW. How should you pay for short-term financial goals?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN As you go through life, you will likely have long- and short-term financial goals.

But how will your strategies for meeting your long-term goals differ from those needed for your short-term ones?

If you’re like most people, your biggest long-term goal is achieving a comfortable retirement. And for this goal, a common strategy is putting away money in taxadvantaged retirement vehicles, such as your 401(k) and IRA. So, how should you go about preparing for shorter-term goals, such as a family vacation, home renovation, wedding or major purchase?

For starters, determine what your goal is, how much you can spend on it and when you’ll need the money. Even if you can’t pinpoint a precise amount, you can develop a good estimate. Of course, the sooner you start this process, the better off you’ll be, because you’ll have more time to save.

Your next decision involves the manner in which you save for your short-term goal.

Specifically, what savings or investment vehicles should you use? The answer will be different for everyone, but you need to make sure that your investments align with your risk tolerance and time horizon. And you’ll want to ensure, as much as possible, that a certain amount of money is available for you at the specific time you’ll need it.

If you aren’t able to save enough to reach a short-term goal, you have other options — you can borrow what you need, or you can potentially sell investments to cover the cost.

How can you decide which choice is best?

To help make up your mind, you’ll first want to consider some of the most common borrowing options: credit cards, home equity loans, personal loans and margin loans. (A margin loan lets you borrow against the

value of investments you already own).

How might each of these loans fit into your overall financial strategy? Will the repayment schedule work with your cash flow and budget?

You’ll then want to compare the costs and benefits of borrowing, in whatever form, against selling investments. For example, if you can borrow at a lower interest rate compared to the return you think you can get from your investments, borrowing might be a reasonable choice. You’ll also need to consider other factors, such as your credit score, taxes, fees associated with selling investments and time needed to repay debts.

If, for instance, selling investments will trigger a large amount of taxes, borrowing might be preferable. You’ll also want to consider whether there’s a penalty or high costs associated with selling investments. In addition, if you have a long time horizon for a loan, you may want to sell investments to avoid paying interest for a longer period of time, and thus driving up the overall cost of borrowing.

Finally, keep in mind that you may have built an investment mix designed to align with your goals and risk tolerance.

If you were to sell any of these investments to meet short-term needs, you would want to consider the need to rebalance your portfolio to maintain your desired asset allocation.

As you can see, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to paying for short-term goals.

But by carefully evaluating your options, you can make the choices that are right for your needs.

Many declare Fall their favorite season. There is nothing quite like the breathtaking brilliance of Fall colors against a blue sky, enjoyed in the fresh air on a sunny day. And how about cozy campfires on crisp Fall nights? In addition, pumpkin-spice products are available everywhere.

Others dread the coming of Fall. A friend of mine calls Fall, “Summer on hospice.” It’s where summer goes to die, along with the vibrant green things it produces. Days get shorter. Nights get longer. Brilliant leaves fall, leaving skeletal trees. Crisp turns to cold. For many, melancholy sets in with the coming of Fall.

Whether you dread or delight in the arrival of Fall, seasonal change invites us to direct our attention to the God who does not change.

After destroying a toxic world in The Great Flood, God said to Noah and his family, “While earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22, ESV). With these words, God promised to preserve the current created order, along with its daily and seasonal rhythms, until Christ returns to renew creation.

Against the backdrop of these rhythms, the good news of Christ goes out, inviting us to turn from our sin and trust in Jesus Christ to redeem us from all our sin and brokenness in this turbulent, chaotic, and ever-changing world.

VETERANS MUSEUM IN THE MAKING: Right now, the temporary home of the VETERANS MUSEUM in the Tri Town Safety Village ( 1350 Eagle Ridge Drive, Schererville, In) is in a tight space. But plans are underway for a 4-to-5-thousand-foot museum on the safety campus, immediately adjacent, according to William Jarvis, executive director. Plans and blueprints are already being pored over to launch this one-of-a-kind entity in Northwest Indiana.

Some 1,600 items are carefully curated into the existing temporary space, lovingly looked after by Tom Clark who recently retired after 40 fabulously productive years at Lake Central.

Clark’s passion for his project is palpable and to be in his company for only a little time is contagious! One farm supplied food for an average of 11 people. In 1940 58% of farm families had 1 car, 33% had electricity and only 25% had a telephone. The average American farm was 175 acres. Victory Gardens also helped prevent food shortages at home during the war. Food rationing took place in the US from 1942-1949. Women at home tended the gardens while the men went off to war. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, farms moved from horsepower to gas powered tractors. As of 2012, only 1 percent of Americans work on farms, fishing or forestry, and less than 2 percent of Americans engage in farming. The average farm is now 433 acres and 41 percent of the US is farmed. US farms provide 46 percent of the world’s soybeans, 41 percent of the world’s corn, 20.5 percent of the world’s cotton and 13 percent of the world’s wheat! One farm now supplies food for 144 people! Cook County State’s Attorney BNI to Welcome Prospective Kimberly Foxx Has Moved Families at Upcoming Events to Vacate 8 Additional Convictions Tied to Former Chicago Police Sergeant Watts Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced today that the office filed motions to vacate 8 convictions as part of the office’s ongoing review of misconduct by corrupt former Chicago Police Sergeant Ronald Watts.

Since State’s Attorney Foxx took office in December 2016, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) has moved to vacate a total of 220 cases involving former Sergeant Watts, who has a history of preying on people from Chicago communities and falsely pinning crimes to these individuals.

“Vacating these convictions provides just a fraction of relief for those who spent time in prison, away from their families, and we will never be able to give them that time back. We will continue to review these cases as we seek justice for all his victims,” said Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx. “I’m grateful for the attorneys in this office who continue to seek justice, restore trust, and address the historic

inequities of Cook County’s criminal justice system,” Foxx continued.

Today in court, prosecutors formally presented the motions to Judge Erica Reddick during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building in Chicago, who granted the motions and vacated the convictions.

The CCSAO’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU), tasked with investigating and addressing claims of wrongful convictions, continued reviewing cases after a pattern of misconduct and criminal actions by Watts was uncovered, resulting in lacking confidence in the initial arrests and validity of the convictions. In April 2022, Foxx did not oppose petitions in 44 cases where individuals claimed they were targeted by Watts and those convictions were vacated by the court.

As of today, under the Foxx administration, the work of the CCSAO has led to vacated convictions of 237 different cases.

They spent many of those years dancing the night away, leaving onlookers both with envy and joy of their love for one another, and their moves on the dance floor. Diane blessed the lives of her husband Medwick, her two daughters Michelle (David) Sickles, Georgianna (Jeff) Mize, stepsons Mathew Matlock and Ryan Matlock, her grandchildren Maddisyn Sickles, Dylan Sickles, Kristen (Joseph) Gutierrez, Krystal (Larry) Tachik, and Gregory Boatright, her great grandchildren Madison McCall, Julius Gutierrez, Manuel Gutierrez, Lilli O’Rourke, Lincoln Tachik, Lyla Tachik, Tyler Boatright, and Reagan Boatright.

Diane was also a blessing to her four brothers Rick (Sheri) Allen, David (Cindy) Allen, Thomas Allen, and Robert (Leasa) Allen, and her many beloved nieces and nephews. Preceded in death were her parents John and Lillian (Davis) Allen, brother Thomas Allen, daughter Kimberly Sue Mullins, granddaughter Alexis Sickles, and son in law Jeff Mize. Diane’s love of helping people extended beyond those she knew, to those she had never met.

She carried that love into the coordination of several benefits over the years to help special needs children and families. One of her proudest ventures was organizing and facilitating Area One Special Olympics at the Pines Ski Lodge. She continued to carry on with her passion of helping others by working as a CNA in a hospice setting, as well as the hospital. Diane leaves a legacy of love behind. A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 29th, 2022 at Smits Funeral Home 2121 Pleasant Spring Lane, Dyer, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 PM with a memorial service to be held at 3:00 PM. Illinois groups’ rallying efforts to 700 Volunteers Turn Out for preserve, protect and celebrate Illinois CPA Society’s 13th quality journalism across Annual CPA Day of Service Northern IL at a historic gathering The Northern Illinois University Department of Communication and the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association are rallying efforts to preserve, protect and celebrate quality journalism across Northern Illinois at a historic gathering set for Thursday, Oct. 27.

The event – which will be held in the banquet facilities of Altgeld Hall on the NIU campus – recognizes the 60th anniversary of the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association and its valued partnership with NIU’s Communication Department.

“This is a special occasion celebrating a special mission,” said NINA President Patricia Szpekowski. “Our goal is to promote journalism and journalism education in Northern Illinois, and there has never been a more important time in our 60-year history to carry out that mission.”

The Northern Illinois Newspaper Association was founded in 1962 by Dr. Donald Grubb, longtime chairman of the former NIU Journalism Department, and throughout its history, it has promoted the newspapers of Illinois by developing programs to enhance the profession, working in conjunction with high school journalism advisers, providing annual scholarships for student journalists, administering an annual contest to reward excellence in the profession and sponsoring workshops and training seminars.

But NINA and the newspaper industry as a whole are at a crossroads, and the event faces that reality head-on. Without naming any specifics, Szpekowski said the Oct 27 banquet will include an announcement on how NINA will move forward to meet the challenges of the times.

The keynote speaker will be Kelly Bauer, breaking news editor of Block Club Chicago and winner of the 2021 award for Chicago Journalist of the Year. Bauer won the award for her investigative reports that revealed executives at the publicly-funded Loretto Hospital were allowing people with connections – including

Eric Trump – to cut the line to receive vaccines.

Her award-winning stories led to the CFO resigning, the CEO being ousted and the FBI launching investigations into the improper vaccinations.

The 60th anniversary celebration will include a cash-bar cocktail hour and book fair, recognition of NINA’s legendary founders, a muti-media presentation, dinner and awards ceremony, culminating with the James S. Copley and the Donald R. Grubb traveling awards for overall excellence.

The event is open to all and will be of particular interest to people who care about journalism and the news industry in Northern Illinois. Students, teachers, civic leaders, nonprofit organizers, free-lance writers, government communications professionals, law enforcers, academics and elected officials are encouraged to join the conversation with professional reporters and editors.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 2,170 journalists and media workers were killed worldwide between 1992 and 2022.

According to a report from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, more than 360 newspapers in the United States have gone out of business since just before the start of the pandemic.

“Your attendance means a lot,” Szpekowski said. “Journalism and journalists have been under siege in recent years, and fewer people are getting their information from reliable, professional information sources. We can change that, but to do so, we need your support and active participation.”

The resolve these volunteers have shown by finding safe, thoughtful, and generous ways to support their local communities and charities is an inspiration to us all.”

On September 7, 2022, I wrote to the ambulance company telling them that there was a problem with the bill that it sent to you. I told them what we were doing to find the problem and get it corrected. I asked them to be patient because you were not ignoring the bill.

A person that I know at the ambulance company did a little research to help you. In her letter to me, she said that she believed there was a problem that needed us to contact the Medicare coordination of benefits office.

When you get the Medicare Summary

Notice forms about the ambulance bill, call me to make an appointment to bring those to me and make phone calls with me. That will be the fastest way for me to research the problem and help you with it.

All the help that I am giving the client is FREE OF CHARGE. We know that the Medicare system is far from perfect. We care about our senior citizen clients. We help them when they have Medicare related medical bill problems. It shows that we really care about our clients.
