With a hard drive full of photos, the graphic designer imagined assembling a project where he could share a hidden gem amidst the congested south suburbs in NWI. Just a few blocks from his neighborhood, where his family has resided for generations, the Highland Rookery (or Cline Avenue Marsh) is easily accessible and offers plenty of natural beauty to see through the year. Over the last few years Alex has been exploring the hobbies of photography and bird watching while documenting what is present as the seasons change.

After applying in January 2022 for the Highland Community Foundation’s “Highland has Art” grant, an open art grant focused on the town, Alex received word in March that they would financially support a portion of the project. With 13 plus years graphic design experience with his former employer mixdesign inc, he is more than familiar with layout, copywriting, editing and preparing files for print. While taking on all aspects of the book’s creation to save thousands on publishing costs, the goal of releasing the book in time for the holidays was quite ambitious.

After the task of narrowing down 50,000+ to under 300 images, the photo-focused book started quickly coming together.

Instead of sorting birds and animals scientifically, the book will guide you through a calendar year, documenting what visits and stays at the Highland Rookery. “Some days I see nothing

and just get a nice walk in.” Alex said. “Other days I have to convince myself to leave because there is so much to take in. This describes the hobby of birding or birdwatching in a nutshell. An opportunity can present itself any minute.”

The book takes you through a calendar year, offering insight to those interested in the hobby of birding an idea of what you might see through different months in our area. The 160+ page, 11” x 8.5” hard cover book will include 200+ photos, 100+ unique species of birds, as well as butterflies, bugs, and other animals. The book’s images will be accompanied with descriptions that will touch on facts or habits of the birds or animals, or detail the experience behind capturing the moment.

The book is currently in its pre-sale phase as the final details are squared away before the book goes to print. SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you have a family member who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, or is starting to show symptoms, you will face some real challenges. Navigating the Alzheimer’s experience involves a long journey, and there’s no easy answer for how you can cope with your emotions. But you can at least address some of the financial issues involved to help give yourself a greater sense of control.

Here are some moves to consider: • Plan for care costs and identify insurance coverage. The list of Alzheimer’s-related medical expenses is long and includes ongoing medical treatment, medical equipment, home safety modifications, prescription drugs and personal care supplies. As a caregiver, you’ll want to know the extent of your loved one’s health insurance: Medicare, supplemental policies, veteran’s benefits if applicable, and so on. One big question is how much coverage they might have for adult day care services, in-home care services and full-time residential care services, and other longterm care options. Long-term care is one of the largest health care costs not covered

by Medicare, so you’ll want to determine if your loved one has a long-term care policy or another insurance policy with a long-term care rider.

• Identify assets and debts. You’ll need to know your family member’s financial position, both what they own — bank accounts, investments, property, etc. — and what they owe, such as credit card debt, a mortgage, lines of credit, and so on. This knowledge will be essential if you’re granted power of attorney to take over your loved one’s finances.

• Look for tax breaks available to caregivers. If you’re a caregiver, you may have to pay for some care costs out of pocket.

Consequently, you could receive some tax credits and deductions. These benefits vary

by state, so you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor to determine your eligibility.

• Ensure necessary legal documents are in place. As a caregiver, you may need to ensure some legal documents are in place, such as a durable power of attorney for finances, which lets you make financial decisions for your loved one with Alzheimer’s, and a durable power of attorney for health care, which lets you make health care and medical decisions on their behalf. It’s important to have these and other necessary documents drawn up before someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or when they’re just starting to exhibit the earliest signs of the disease, so they can understand what documents they are signing. If you wait until they no longer have this cognitive ability, things will get much more challenging. You could apply to become a conservator, which grants decision-making abilities similar to a power of attorney, but the conservatorship process takes time and could involve court procedures. To avoid this potential difficulty, work with your tax and legal professionals to ensure all the relevant legal documents are in-force and updated.

Finally, you don’t have to go it alone. To help deal with the emotional challenges of caregiving, you can find local Alzheimer’s support groups that can offer practical suggestions for coping. As for the financial issues, consider working with a financial professional who can look at your family’s overall situation and recommend appropriate actions.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s will change the lives of everyone in your family. But as a caregiver, you can help ease the burden.

South Suburban College (SSC) is seeking participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills, whole language experience, combined with effective communication skills. Residents are welcome to volunteer as tutors and encourage others to take advantage of this free professional development opportunity.

Once certified, SSC’s volunteer literacy tutors visit adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring is flexibly scheduled based on the availability of tutors, learners, and tutoring sites. The following locations have been established as tutoring sites: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Public Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; South Suburban College Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Blue Island Public Library; Dixmoor Public Library; Tinley Park Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library.

Illiteracy can be debilitating in many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction.

Adults who are unable to read experience difficulty

completing many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a disadvantage in today’s competitive job market.

SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

Tutor training will take place at the South Suburban College Main Campus, located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois on Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 4 through October 20, 2022 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Training will also take place at the South Suburban College Oak Forest Center, located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue, Oak Forest, Illinois on Tuesdays and Thursdays from November 1 through November 17, 2022 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This 12-hour program culminates with literacy training certification.

Tutors will continue to receive free professional development services throughout this program.

Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. JOSH BOOTSMA Here’s a litmus test for your heart: What do you get angry about?

What I, and you, choose to get angry about speaks volumes about what we truly care about, what we love.

Emotional energy is precious, and when we choose to spend it getting angry, we’re subconsciously declaring where our priorities lie.

A nasty traffic encounter, an embarrassing conversation, a technology malfunction, [insert your own personal kryptonite here] — all have the potential to derail our day, or they can fall like water off a duck’s back. The choice is up to us — and it’s based in our hearts.

Like so many sins, sinful anger is actually a distortion of a God-ordained response to injustice and wrongdoing.

Ephesians 4:26 says simply, “Be angry and do not sin.” This means that there is a right way to be angry.

Which brings us to the litmus test. What does our anger actually tell us about ourselves? If your spouse didn’t do the dishes and that angers you, is your anger really about the dishes? Or do you feel entitled in your relationship? Are you selfishly hoarding your time and expecting your spouse to make the sacrifices? So many of our anger outbursts have root issues like these!

Here’s a simple but profound takeaway: If you love rightly, you’ll be angry rightly.

When you truly love your neighbor — your kids, your spouse, your boss, the guy in the car who just cut you off, the barista who got your order wrong — more than yourself, you will find yourself being less angry. In fact, instead of being angry AT them, you can start to become angry FOR them, advocating on their behalf and fighting for God’s justice in the world.

Your anger may be powerful, but being equipped with the love of Jesus Christ is even more powerful. Where is your heart today?

Medicare Caused the Extra Work!

On September 27, 2022, one of our clients phoned her agent to ask about a medical bill problem that I researched and worked last month. Her agent asked me about it. He told me that she got another bill for the same problem.

I reviewed the file to remember what I had done to help the client. On August 31, 2022, I sent a letter to the chief of the billing department at a local hospital to request that the hospital send certain critical claim information to our client’s Medicare supplement insurance company so that the claim could be paid to the hospital. The insurance company told me that it never received the claim information from Medicare.

It takes some time and work to get this done. I suspect that the second bill to our client was sent automatically before the hospital could send the claim information to our client’s insurance company.

In the almost 20 years that I have helped our senior citizen clients, Medicare’s failure to send claims information to Medicare supplement insurance companies is the biggest problem with the Medicare system.

By biggest problem, I mean the one that happens most often.

I don’t know who is claiming that the Medicare communications system is working wonderfully, but that’s just not so. When Medicare fails to send claims information to insurance companies, claims don’t get paid and seniors get hounded to pay bills that their insurance companies would pay if the companies got the claims information

from Medicare. When I wrote my book on Medicare problems, I calculated an estimate of the losses throughout our country based on my experience in this area. I estimated that Medicare’s failure to send claim information to insurance companies and causing seniors to be hounded to pay wrongful bills cost seniors over one billion dollars per year.

I have tried to get political leaders of both major parties interested in fixing this problem. But I have not found any politician who really cares enough about seniors to push to fix this or any of the other problems with Medicare that I have cited many times in the more than 1,000 published articles that I have written.

The fact that my employer pays me to help our senior citizen clients with medical bill problems is clear evidence that the owners, managers, and staff of this insurance agency really care about our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service to you, why not switch to our insurance agency?

Jesse White Encourages Student Readers to Enter “Letters About Literature in Illinois” Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is encouraging students in grades four through 12 to enter the 2023 “Letters About Literature in Illinois” reading and writing competition, which is offered by the Illinois State Library’s Illinois Center for the Book.

“Letters About Literature in Illinois” invites students to read a book of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the work changed their life or view of the world. Students can enter directly on their own or through their locally participating school.

“Every year, thousands of students in Illinois enjoy participating in this inspiring competition,” said White. “Anyone who has read past letters can see how literature inspires and touches the lives of our young people. I encourage all our students to take part in ‘Letters About Literature in Illinois,’ and I hope their

participation leads to a lifetime of reading.”

There are three levels of participation: Level 1 for grades 4-6, Level 2 for grades 7-8 and Level 3 for grades 9-12. The deadline for submission is Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022.

One winner will be selected for each level and receive a cash award and a plaque signed by the Secretary of State. Teachers of the winning students will receive a certificate and their school will receive a cash award to purchase books for the library.

Winners are scheduled to be announced toward the end of the 2022-2023 academic year.

Assessor’s Office releases new way to view property details and real estate sales The Assessor’s Office released a new database that shows a greater level of detail for each property located in Cook County. A property owner can visit the Assessor’s website, enter their PIN, or address, and obtain information such as the estimated market value, assessed value, and property characteristics. New noteworthy features include information pertaining to permits, divisions & consolidations, and the Homeowner Improvement Exemption.

Another new feature is the “Neighborhood Sales” function, which provides current real estate information that can be reviewed and printed. This function generates a list of real estate transactions within the neighborhood code of a property within the last 36 months.

This information is useful for property owners that are considering filing an appeal or would like to understand the market value of properties in their neighborhood.

Why is it important to understand the current

real estate market in my neighborhood?

Assessments, under Illinois law, should fairly reflect market values. The Assessor’s Office estimates market values by using a mass appraisal model that analyzes sales trends. If a property owner believes their property is worth less than the Assessor’s Office’s estimate of its value, the owner is entitled to file an appeal.

Appeals can be filed once a year during a specific timeframe which can be found on the Assessment and Appeals Calendar.

What is the difference between market value and assessed value?

The estimated market value is what the Assessor’s Office believes a property is worth in the current real estate market. The assessed value is the amount used to calculate your property taxes. For residential property, this is usually 10% of the estimated market value. For commercial property, this is typically 25% of estimated market value.

The U.S. Department of Education announced awards totaling nearly $1 billion through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA). The Stronger Connections grants will help schools provide all students with safe and supportive learning opportunities and environments that are critical for their success.

Through the BSCA, and under the leadership of President Biden, Congress provided $1 billion in Title IV, Part A formula funding to state educational agencies (SEAs) to develop state grant programs to provide students with safer and healthier learning environments.

Earlier today, Secretary Cardona informed chief state school officers of their allocations under the BSCA Stronger Connections grant program. SEAs must award these funds competitively to high-need local educational agencies (LEAs), as determined by the state, to fund activities allowable under section 4108 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

“We have years of evidence that demonstrate the value of building safe and supportive schools. These efforts improve academic achievement, promote emotional well-being, reduce disciplinary actions, and increase positive behaviors,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Safe and supportive schools help our children and youth overcome trauma and provide a strong foundation of emotional and physical safety. These grants will provide real benefits to real students in real schools.”

Safe and supportive schools are proven by decades of rigorous research to be most effective in supporting academic success as well as meeting the social, emotional, physical, and mental health needs of students. These funds can also be used to support school and community partnerships that pursue multifaceted solutions to more effectively prevent and respond to acts of bullying, violence, and hate that impact members of our school communities at both individual and systemic levels.

As part of the Department’s announcement, Secretary Cardona sent chief state school officers a Dear Colleague Letter outlining three principles that SEAs are strongly encouraged to consider when designing a competitive grant competition and providing LEAs

I told him &#(!)# and @#*%)) and he hung the phone up on me! Then he sent me an email canceling the listing! Can you believe it? What kind of a #*&^(!)) would cancel a listing over a conversation? It wasn’t personal. He should have understood how stressed I am and dealt with it. Dealing with me is part of his job.”

Tekla (Thea) Antina Ausema (Kap), age 82, of Schererville, IN, formerly of Homewood, IL was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Thea was a Jesus follower, an encourager, and one devoted to her family, praying for her kids and grandkids every morning.

She focused her life on caring for people through her gift of hospitality and out of her love of Christ. Thea was born in Loppersum, Groningen in the Netherlands. At age 15 (1954) she emigrated to the southside of Chicago. They attended First Reformed Church of Roseland (where she met her husband Howard). When they moved to Homewood, IL they joined Homewood Reformed, which later became Living Springs Community Church. Their family built many lifelong friendships and were devoted to the church and building up the body of Christ. She was known for her diligence, faithfulness, warmth, and elegance. She enjoyed working in her garden, drinking midmorning tea, and being with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Geert and Martina Kap, her husband, Howard Ausema, and her grandson, Brandt Ausema. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David Ausema (Ruth), Susan (Ausema) VanPoolen (Steve); grandchildren, Kathryn, Pieter (Faith), and Caroline Ausema and Eliza and Lola VanPoolen; siblings, Hilda (Kap) Kuiken and Menzo Kap; and many loving siblings in law, nieces, nephews, extended family, and good friends. Relatives and friends may visit the family Saturday, October 1st, 2022, from 9:00-10:45 am at Living Springs Community Church, 19051 S Halsted St, Glenwood, IL 60425.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 1st, 2022, at 11:00 am at Living Springs, with Pastor Jason Perry officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Interment Monday, October 3, 2022 at Fairmount Willow Hills Cemetery – Willow Springs, IL. On the 26th of September Laura Diane Keaton lost her battle with cancer. She was the child of Larry V. and Luanne C. Horvath. She was the amazing mother of Brandon (Gina) Keaton and step-mother of Daniel Keaton. Dearest sister of Cindy (Lee) Milazzo and Nicole Horvath, and the coolest aunt of multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Robbie Gene Keaton. Laura lived life to the fullest, this world will greatly miss her presence. Even though she lost her battle with cancer she didn’t go out without a fight. She made the people she touched richer by just knowing her and lit up the room with her smile and laugh. Not only was she the best mom she could be to her son, but shared that love with all of his friends as well who would call her their second mom. She was active in sports and was competitive in whatever she entered into. Laura worked for the Center Township Assessor’s office and took pride in her work. She loved camping, being with family, and vacationing on the beach in NC (That was her happy place). She will be deeply missed by all who shared her life, especially Donald Johnson, her ride or die. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, September 30th, 2022 from 1 pm - 9 pm at Monastery Club House 9800 W. 129th St. Cedar Lake, IN. In lieu of flowers, she would love donations to the American Cancer Society or Humane Society IN.
