Graduates of the SSC Highway Construction Careers Training Program Attended the Groundbreaking for the $94 Mil. Wood Street and Ashland Avenue Modernization Project.

On September 8, 2022, Governor JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), local officials, and the community announced the reconstruction of Wood Street and Ashland Avenue, which runs through Harvey, Dixmoor, and Riverdale. This 94-million-dollar reconstruction project, set to begin in the spring of 2023, will modernize the 90-year-old infrastructure. Graduates of the South Suburban College (SSC) Highway Construction Careers Training Program (HCCTP), an IDOT initiative, will have the opportunity to be recruited for the project to fulfill the workforce goals of the project.

“The twelve-week Highway Construction Careers Training Program was launched in 2008. The program provides opportunities for minorities, women, and disadvantaged individuals by helping them gain skills that can lead to employment in the trades with high-income potential,” said SSC President Dr. Lynette D Stokes. “Our graduates can start careers as iron workers, electricians, pipefitters, carpenters, laborers, equipment operators, and so much more. The recent corridor project, announced by Governor JB Pritzker, highlights the many opportunities this program can provide students.”

SSC’s pre-apprenticeship program, fully funded through a partnership with IDOT, runs Monday through Friday. Students are paid a stipend for each completed hour of training. “The HCCTP at South Suburban College is now in its twentyseventh cohort since entering the partnership. The last cohort,

who graduated in May 2022, had 100% placement into union apprenticeship programs - that’s something to be proud of! It shows the dedication of our students, South Suburban College, and the many contractors and apprenticeship programs striving to meet the workforce demand to fulfill the goals of Rebuild Illinois, Governor Pritzker’s infrastructure plan,” said HCCTP Coordinator Rebecca Garcia.

The project will revitalize a three-mile stretch between 161st and 138th streets to rebuild the four-lane road, including new gutters, lighting, and curbs. The project will also include the bridge over the Little Calumet River, bike and pedestrian accommodations, a new storm sewer system, and the replacement of municipal water mains. Faith Bible Church Hosting 11th Annual Punkin Launchin October 8th Pumpkins will be flying again on Saturday, October 8th at Faith Bible Church, located at 305 E. 400 N. in Valparaiso. There will be a variety of activities including the Punkin Dash 5K race, pumpkin hand toss, machine launch, kid’s area, and food.

The Punkin Dash 5K race starts at 9AM. Plus there will be adult men’s & women’s divisions along with senior men’s & women’s divisions. Helped Client Complain Against Medical Firm WOODROW WILCOX

On September 19, 2022, I met with a client from Crown Point, Indiana. A medical billing firm was harassing him with a “bad” bill. So, I helped the client file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Office of the Indiana Attorney General.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the overview page of the complaint against the medical firm.

I received a bill from (the medical firm).

I took the bill to my insurance agency for advice and help. The agency administrator helped me. We contacted my insurance company and learned that (the medical firm) sent a bill to the insurance company on 04/29/21 and 08/30/21. But, each time, the biller omitted the “ICN” number. The “ICN” number distinguishes a claim bill from others that are similar. The “ICN” number is vital to getting payment. The “ICN” number prevents a biller from intentionally or accidentally getting paid more than once for a claim.

The agency administrator wrote a letter to the billing parties to get them to send a claim to the insurance company with the “ICN” number so that the bill could be paid. The billing parties did nothing.

On September 19, 2022, I got another bill from the billers and took it to the insurance agency that I use. The administrator phoned the insurance company about it. The billers never sent any bill with the “ICN” number.

Now, that the filing deadline of fifteen months has passed, the insurance company

will not pay the bill even if the billers sent a bill now with the “ICN” number.

The bill was caused by the bad and unethical business practices of one or both billing parties. People at those firms made the mistake and now they want me to pay for their mistake. Those are bad and unethical business practices that harm consumers.

Please, help me and prevent these firms from doing the same to others.

Accompanying this cover letter are copies of items verifying items in this letter.

When I help a client file a complaint like this, I always include an overview page to help the people at the Indiana Attorney General’s office to clearly understand the wrong being done to our client by the firm wronging our client.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This firm helps clients with such Medicare related medical bill problems without charging anything to the client. If the insurance agent or agency that you use will not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to Senior Care Insurance Services?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana.

He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

JOSH BOOTSMA In the 11th chapter of John, you’ll read a remarkable story about Jesus raising a man from the dead. Jesus goes to Lazarus’ tomb, and says, “Lazarus, come out” (John 11:43).

The dead man is dead no longer, and walks out of his tomb.

Just a few verses later in Chapter 12, Jesus is at a dinner party with Lazarus and others.

Can you imagine what it would have been like at that dinner party? What if you, not knowing who Lazarus was, sat next to him and started asking him questions?

“You … were dead? What do you mean?”

“I mean I was literally dead. But then Jesus gave me life!”

It would be an amazing conversation, and yet it’s the same conversation that a child of God might have with someone outside the family of God. Read it again.

For those who have accepted the life-giving salvation of Jesus Christ, there is more than death — there is resurrection.

When we die, we will go to be with our Father in heaven.

And on the final judgment day, whenever that will be, we will be given new, perfect bodies. No pains, no tears, no hunger, no cancer. We will live in perfect bodies in a perfect land with our perfect Father. What a day that will be!

So, what’s your choice? Do you look forward to your casket or urn? Or do you want the resurrecting power of Jesus Christ to make you like Lazarus, able to say in complete joy: “I was dead, but Jesus gave me life!”

MIKE BUDER While showing homes the other day, I began to wonder why so many occupied homes are not properly prepared for showings. Most sellers know in advance that their home is going to be shown. When you get that call, it’s almost “show time”.

Have a plan of action to get your home in “show-ready shape”.

Open all the blinds and turn on all the lights. Homes that are light and bright appear larger and more inviting. If you have ceiling fans, turn them all on low. Maybe have some soft music playing. Scents will sometimes help to create emotion. In years past, we would leave a drop of vanilla on a light bulb. When the agent turned on the light, the heat would release the vanilla fragrance into the air. Times have changed and now we can simply purchase small air fresheners. While some fragrance is good, too much can be overpowering. If you have time, run the vacuum cleaner over the carpets. Buyer’s notice when the carpets look like nobody has walked on them.

While you may love your pets, many people are afraid of them and they often get in the way. Taking your pets with you during the showing time is the best idea. Some dogs are crate-trained and sit quietly in their crate.

However, there’s nothing more annoying

than listening to a barking dog the whole time you’re viewing a home.

If possible, try not to be there when the agent and the buyers arrive, it’s awkward and often makes the buyers uncomfortable.

Some buyers want to be able to peek into closets and kitchen cabinets. They want to be able to discuss what they like and don’t like with their agent and each other. If you’re there, it will probably be a short showing!

Leave the selling to the agent. Many sellers assume the showing agent will arrive ahead of time to get the home show-ready. If I’m only showing one home, I often arrive early and get the lights on. However, if I’m showing more than one home, I have the buyers with me and we walk in at the same time for that important first impression.

Most buyers decide in the first 60 seconds if they like the home. Get your home showready and make the most of that minute!

Cook County Assessor’s Office Wins National Awards for Transparency and Fairness The Cook County Assessor’s Office (Assessor’s Office) received awards from two national organizations for creating a new residential model that contributes to fairly and accurately assessing homes in Cook County.

The International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) gave the Assessor’s Office its Distinguished Research and Development Award and The Center for Digital Government presented the office with its County Government Experience Award.

us to be accountable to the public is to make our work as fair and transparent as possible,” said Samantha Simpson, the Chief Data Officer for the Assessor’s Office. “To have two nationally recognized authorities in assessments and technology recognize our achievements means we are on the right track.”

The Assessor’s Office uses real estate data and property characteristics to power its valuation model which assesses residential properties through a mass appraisal system. Despite popular belief, the Assessor’s Office does not individually assess each residential property in Cook County.

Instead, it relies on tens of thousands of data points to ensure its model creates an accurate measure of a property’s value.

Since 2019, the modeling code and data used

by Assessor Kaegi’s office has been publicly available online through GitLab, an open-source online platform for software development, and the Cook County Open Data Portal. Publishing the code on the Data Portal is part of the Assessor’s Office ongoing partnership with the Cook County Bureau of Technology and the fulfillment of a promise to create the most transparent assessment agency in the country.

Under previous administrations, the Assessor’s Office’s data was kept confidential, released only by a Freedom of Information Act request. This new system for publishing and updating the code allows journalists, academics, and the public to monitor performance, and even suggest changes that can improve accuracy, creating an open dialogue with the civic technology community.

The data team continues to iterate on the model every year. To learn more about the valuation model and recent improvements, watch a presentation given by Daniel Snow, Director of Data Science at a recent Chi Hack Night event.

Services & Business Licensing, this position is responsible for the safeguarding of life, health, public welfare and protection of property through enforcement of Village ordinances and ICC (International Code Council) Building Codes. Assists customers looking to build new, remodel and other building related projects and answer questions and develops productive, professional relationships with contractors and property owners.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Five (5) years of construction or municipal

building experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job. A High school diploma or GED equivalent required and an Associate’s degree in Construction/Building Technology or related field is preferred. ICC Residential and/or Commercial Building Inspector Certifications preferred. Alternately, must obtain certifications within twelve months.

Consider these suggestions: • Establish and quantify your goals.

Throughout your life, you’ll have short-term goals, such as an overseas vacation or a home renovation, and long-term goals, the most important of which may be a comfortable retirement. You’ll want to identify all your goals and put a “price tag” on them. Of course, it’s not always possible to know exactly how much it will cost to achieve each goal, but you can develop reasonably good estimates, revising them as needed.

• Create an investment strategy to achieve your goals. Once you know how much your goals will cost, you can create the appropriate savings and investment strategies to potentially help you reach the needed amounts. For your retirement goal, you will likely need to contribute regularly to your IRA and 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. But for shorterterm goals, you may need to explore other types of investments. For all your investment moves, though, you’ll need to consider your risk tolerance. You won’t want your portfolio to have such a high-risk level that you’re constantly uncomfortable with the inevitable fluctuations of the financial markets. On the other hand, you won’t want to invest so conservatively that you jeopardize your chances of achieving the growth you need to reach your goals.

• Control your debts. We live in an expensive world, so it’s not easy to live debtfree. And some debts, such as your mortgage, obviously have value. But if you can control

other debts, especially those that carry high interest rates, you can possibly free up money you can use to boost your savings and investments.

• Prepare for obstacles. No matter how carefully you follow the strategies you’ve created to achieve your goals, you will, sooner or later, run into obstacles, or at least temporary challenges. What if you incur a large, unexpected expense, such as the sudden need for a new car or a major home repair? If you aren’t prepared for these costs, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments – and every time you do that, you might slow your progress toward achieving your goals. To help prevent this, you should build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses.

• Review your strategy. When you first created your financial strategy, you might have planned to retire at a certain age.

But what if you eventually decide to retire earlier or later? Such a choice can have a big impact on what you need from your investment portfolio — and when. And your circumstances may change in other ways, too. That’s why it’s a good idea to review your strategy periodically to make sure it still aligns with your up-to-date objectives.

None of us can guarantee that our carefully laid plans will always yield the results we want. But by taking the right steps at the right times, you can greatly improve your chances.

Jesse White Highlights Successful Electronic Automobile Insurance Verification Program Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is highlighting the success of the Electronic Automobile Insurance Verification Program, which has led to a dramatic reduction of uninsured motorists. Over the first 14 months of the program – which launched July 1, 2021 – the percentage of registered vehicles without verified insurance dropped from 12.7% of Illinois vehicles to 6.9%. During this same period, more than 540,000 vehicle owners have either obtained insurance or received license plate suspensions.

“My office led the effort to establish and implement this electronic automobile insurance verification system to reduce the number of Illinois motorists driving while uninsured,” said White. “I am pleased the program is working. The message for the motoring public remains simple: If you do not have automobile insurance, get covered now. It is the law.”

Under this program, insurance companies work with the Secretary of State’s office to confirm electronically that motorists have automobile insurance.

Vehicle owners’ automobile insurance is verified electronically at least twice a year at random intervals to ensure that vehicle owners are complying with the state’s mandatory automobile liability insurance laws. Most vehicle owners do not have to do anything, as electronic verification of automobile insurance is confirmed automatically.

If electronic verifications are unsuccessful, the Secretary of State’s office sends a written request to the vehicle owner giving them the opportunity to prove they have insurance before suspending their vehicle registration. Vehicle owners must contact their insurance company or notify their insurance agent that they received a letter with a specific reference number from the Secretary of State. The insurance agent’s responsibility is to confirm electronically with the Secretary

of State – through www.ILIVS.com – that the vehicle owner has automobile insurance on the verification date stated in the letter.

It is important to note that vehicle owners who receive the letter should not visit a Driver Services facility; instead, they should contact their insurance company or agent who can provide the necessary electronic proof of insurance needed to clear either the license plate suspension or the pending license plate suspension.

“This is the best example of a successful publicprivate partnership led by Secretary White,” said Kevin Martin, Executive Director of the Illinois Insurance Association. “Secretary White has been a leader in efforts to resolve issues impacting road safety and the insurance industry. We appreciate all that he has done for Illinois.”

“We were pleased to work with Secretary of State White’s office on the design and implementation of this important program to ensure all motorists in Illinois are in compliance with the law,” said Phil Lackman, CEO of the Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois. “We urge all Illinois motorists to seek the advice of a licensed agent to find the coverage that best suits their needs.”

Vehicle owners who do not currently have automobile insurance must obtain insurance to avoid license plate suspension. If vehicle owners are identified as uninsured, they must obtain automobile insurance and pay a $100 noncompliance fee to clear either the license plate suspension or the pending license plate suspension.

White chaired the Uninsured Motorist Verification Advisory Committee that included insurance companies, traffic safety advocates and members of the General Assembly. The committee reviewed best practices and helped provide the guidelines used to establish legislation and program requirements.

Illinoisans have among the best access to ‘Grade A’ hospitals, reveals study.

National study identifies the no. of people in each state to top-grade hospitals.

It’s a concerning statistic* that over 22,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are a result of preventable deaths during patient hospitalization. Medical error often involves factors such as poor management or monitoring of medical conditions, errors linked to surgery and other procedures, and diagnostic errors; and while healthcare workers are dedicated to their medical duties, these errors may also be related to factors such as short-staffing, system defects or error in judgement.

Duffy & Duffy, a medical malpractice law firm, used the ‘Hospital Safety Grade’**, along with state population data, to determine a state ranking from of where Americans have the best access to ‘Grade A’ level hospitals in terms of medical safety. The Safety Grade allocates a safety score (with A being the highest possible score, and F, the lowest) for hospitals in each state, which provides information on how likely patients are to experience injuries, accidents, harm, or error during hospitalization.

Combined with state population figures, the data analysis compiled a ranking from 1 to 50, indicating which states have the greatest access to top grade healthcare.

It emerged that Illinoisans have among the best access to ‘Grade A’ hospitals in the country.

The Prairie State emerged in 25th position overall, with a rate of 373,406 people per ‘Grade A’ hospital. Illinois has a total of 116 hospitals in the state, of which a significant 28.9% (34 hospitals) scored ‘Grade A’ in terms of safety.

In 1st position is Mississippi, with the best

access to safe healthcare - it has a rate of 192,308 people per ‘Grade A’ hospital. Mississippi has a total of 44 hospitals in the state, of which 35% (15 hospitals) had ‘Grade A’ safety scores.

This study is based on hospitals with publicly available data, however, certain hospitals are not required to publicly report their safety record.

This means there was not enough information available to issue them a safety grading. Hospitals not required to report their safety record publicly include: critical access hospitals and specialty hospitals (such as surgical centers and children’s hospitals). Many hospitals are also unable to provide data to the federal government, due to being too small, or lacking this data entirely (like veteran’s hospitals).

Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana has an amazing night of free music planned to ring in 2023. For the main event, nineties alternative rockers Everclear will perform a free concert on Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana’s Hard Rock Cafe stage on December 31.

Considering Everclear has written and recorded some truly iconic ’90s alt-rock hits, it would be all too easy these days for the band to be a victim of its past successes, relegated to performing as a glorified jukebox, existing to satisfy the nostalgic cravings of Gen Xers everywhere. But singer-guitarist Art Alexakis isn’t about to start phoning it in now.

Everclear continues to tour extensively, and while it’s a virtual surety that no Everclear gig is complete without a rendition of “Santa Monica” and “Father of Mine,” lately the band has found that exploring the full range of past material—especially the “deep cuts”—not only gives fans a rare treat, it also injects new life into the band’s live dynamic.

“By mixing it up and digging into the catalogue, it still makes it fun and relevant for us, and I think for the fans as well,” says Alexakis. “It’s still important to play the hits, but by playing those other songs as well, it makes it all seem more vibrant and real. Even though I recorded some of those songs 20 years ago, I haven’t played them in a long time, so it’s like reinventing the wheel. I’m having more fun now than I have in years. I think all of us are.”

Formed by Alexakis in 1991 in Portland, Oregon, Everclear has enjoyed a lengthy career spanning 11 studio releases, numerous videos, thousands of shows and accolades that include a 1998 Grammy nomination. Like a true survivor, Alexakis has soldiered on through multiple lineup changes over the years: During the “classic” era, the band also included Craig Montoya on Bass and Greg Eklund on drums; the current touring lineup features longtime members Davey French (guitar) and Freddy Herrera (bass), as well as drummer Brian Nolan (also with American Hi-Fi), who has performed with Everclear on multiple past tours.

Nerdvana, performing sounds of the nineties,

will open for Everclear.

Blues lovers will be in their glory as two legendary brothers grace the Council Oak stage.

Sons of the late great Lonnie Brooks, Wayne Baker Brooks and Ronnie Baker Brooks are legends in their own right. To start things off, Wayne Baker Brooks will take the stage. Wayne is considered one of today’s top guitarists, whose signature style combines powerful vocals with liquid fire guitar playing that honors his rich blues heritage while effortlessly expanding the boundaries of the genre. Born and raised in Chicago, IL amongst the most prolific blues legends and blues masters in the world, Wayne Baker Brooks’ blues roots may run deeper and wider than the Great Lakes themselves.

Following Wayne Baker Brooks, Ronnie Baker Brooks will perform on the Council Oak stage. Ronnie is a Chicago Blues and Soul staple.

Brooks has been declared “blues royalty”, as his style honors the true torch bearers of this unique sound which includes Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Luther Allison, as well as his father.

New Year’s Eve Entertainment on both stages will kick off at 9:00 p.m. All shows are free to guests. All guests must be 21 years or older.
