Performances will take place on September 16, 17 and 23, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. and September 24 and 25, 2022 at 2 p.m.

Bleacher Bums is a play collaboratively written in 1977 by members of Chicago’s Organic Theater Company from an idea by actor Joe Mantegna. A performance of the play was recorded for PBS television, and in 2002 a made-for-TV movie adaptation was produced. Win or lose, the cast of characters remain undaunted and will root for their team no matter what.

The nine-inning comedy focuses on an eclectic group in the bleachers at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. The cast includes Jennifer Balbuena of Gary, IN as Melody, an avid sunbather; Jim Andricopulos of Mokena as Zig, a loudmouthed middle-aged man; Carol Melendez of Glenwood as Zig’s wife Rose; Brandon Alexander of Glenwood as Decker, a businessman with a thirst for success; Jon Becker of Oak Forest, as Marvin, an inveterate gambler; Ashley Orendorff of Thornton, a young cheerleader of

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN You may have heard that you can simplify your investment strategy just by owning index-based or passive investments. But is this a good idea? You’ll want to consider the different aspects of this type of investment style.

To begin with, an index-based investment is a vehicle such as a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that mimics the performance of a market benchmark, or index — the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and so on. (An ETF is similar to a mutual fund in that it holds a variety of investments but differs in that it is traded like a common stock.) You can also invest in index funds that track the bond market.

Index investing does offer some benefits.

Most notably, it’s a buy-and-hold strategy, which is typically more effective than a market-timing approach, in which individuals try to buy investments when their prices are down and sell them when the prices rise. Attempts to time the market this way are usually futile because nobody can really predict when high and low points will be reached. Plus, the very act of constantly buying and selling investments can generate commissions and fees, which can lower your overall rate of return. Thus, index investing generally involves lower fees and is considered more tax efficient than a more active investing style.

Also, when the financial markets are soaring, which happened for several years until this year’s downturn, index-based investments can certainly look pretty good — after all, when the major indexes go up, index funds will do the same.

Conversely, during a correction, when the market drops at least 10% from recent

highs, or during a bear market, when prices fall 20% or more, index-based investments will likely follow the same downward path.

And there are also other issues to consider with index-based investments. For one thing, if you’re investing with the objective of matching an index, you may be overlooking the key factors that should be driving your investment decisions — your goals and your risk tolerance. An index is a completely impersonal benchmark measuring the performance of a specific set of investments — but it can’t be a measuring stick of your own progress.

Furthermore, a single index, by definition, can’t be as diversified as the type of portfolio you might need to achieve your objectives.

For example, the S&P 500 may track a lot of companies, but they’re predominantly large ones. And to achieve your objectives, you may need a portfolio consisting of large- and small-company stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can give you more opportunities for success and can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee profits or prevent all losses.)

Ultimately, diversifying across different types of investments that align with your risk tolerance and goals — regardless of whether they track an index — is the most important consideration for your investment portfolio.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Manager of Buildings

Services & Business Licensing, this position is responsible for the safeguarding of life, health, public welfare and protection of property through enforcement of Village ordinances and ICC (International Code Council) Building Codes. Performs regular inspections of commercial and residential building improvements to ensure compliance with relevant building codes and adherence to the approved permit plans.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Inspects construction in progress and completed installations for workmanship and use of proper materials and method and compliance with adopted building code. Performs daily patrols and inspections for violation of applicable codes, ordinances and regulations and maintains inspection reports, files and reports regarding inspection and plan review activities and findings for possible legal actions. Assists customers looking to build new, remodel and other building related projects and answer questions and develops productive, professional relationships with contractors and property owners.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Five (5) years of construction or municipal

building experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job. A High school diploma or GED equivalent required and an Associate’s degree in Construction/Building Technology or related field is preferred. ICC Residential and/or Commercial Building Inspector Certifications preferred. Alternately, must obtain certifications within twelve months.

MIKE BUDER I may lose some business, but when my head hits the pillow – I go to sleep. “Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking” H. Jackson Brown, Jr. Real estate is a business that seems like someone is always looking. But there are times no one is looking, or they don’t have the experience to know what they’re seeing. I have seen people compromise because their character wasn’t a concern. Some decisions are easy (or at least they should be).

The seller wants to call that room in the basement with the 1’ x 2’ window 6’ up the wall a “bedroom”. I know it’s done, but it shouldn’t be. BOCA, municipal codes, safety, etc. Yet I see many homes where this test has been failed and once I’ve seen this, I’ll question the character of the listing agent and sellers. The deal may still happen, but it’s biased from the start. What if a seller knows of a problem that should be disclosed but doesn’t want to put it out there for fear it will scare off the buyers? Sorry, once I as your Realtor know it, I’m liable too. You as the seller need to correct the problem or at a minimum disclose it. I will do everything I can to make it still work if you do that. But if you’re going to hide it, pretend that radon test didn’t fail, then I cannot work for you. Yes, I could hope no one ever found out, and collect that paycheck for selling your home. But is sacrificing my character worth it? No. As listing agents, we could tell a seller that their home is worth much more than we know the market will bear just to get a listing (maybe we can get them to drop the price later, wink wink). But for me, that’s not character. Character is being honest about market conditions, the truth about what the market will yield and sometimes that truth is telling them not to sell their home right now if they don’t absolutely have to. So if I risk losing some business for being honest, so be it. I sleep well…except if I eat something spicy right before I go to bed!

Is The Bill Legal?

WOODROW WILCOX On September 16, 2022, I wrote a letter to a client to tell her that I could not help her any more with a bill regarding services to her late husband.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client and her family, here is the letter that I sent.

Today, you delivered to my office a copy of the letter from the nursing home which is dated September 12, 2022. That letter was sent in response to the letter that I sent to the nursing home to ask why a member of their staff signed the Advance Beneficiary Notice which is the basis for the bill that was sent to you.

The firm claims that one of their representatives (the staff member) spoke on the phone with you and one of your daughters and that in that conversation, you granted her permission to sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice on your behalf for the treatment of your late husband. If you did not give that person permission to sign the Advance Beneficiary Notice, then the nursing home is lying to get money.

I am not a lawyer. But I seriously doubt that one person can legally give such permission to another person over the phone regarding the medical services given to a third person who is the patient.

If that is legal, then you should pay the bill of $811.28 plus interest.

If that is not legal, then you should

consider getting a lawyer to fight it. Or, you might file a small claims lawsuit to fight it since many lawyers would not take such a case with a small amount in dispute. Any lawyer you consult should appreciate the paper trail that I helped to create to clarify the issues in this matter.

I care about our clients and I help them all that I am able. I do well. But this is a matter where the medical facility claims that what they did is legal and I am not sure that it is. I have my doubts. But I cannot and do not give you any advice on whether it is or is not legal.

I have helped you all that I can. I can’t help you further because of the legal question.

It is up to you whether to just pay that bill or fight it. I wish you well whatever your decision is.

Mykhalo Dovhanyuk, age 66, of Dyer, Indiana, passed away Monday, September 12, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Halyna Dovhanyuk, nee Boiko, loving father of Roman Dovhanyuk and Natalia (late Brent) Torrenga, cherished grandfather of Tiffany and Victoria, and dear brother of Vira and Halyna.
