The acknowledgement came due in part to the college’s longstanding rain garden, bird feeder, community garden, and being home to indigenous trees planted throughout campus for the last 30 years. These plantings are already part of an annual gathering which serves to additionally maintain certification with the National Arbor Day Foundation. “Students have helped a lot with planting of trees, campus cleanup, and trying to attract wildlife,” said Environmental Science and Biology Instructor, Eric Myers, Ph.D., who applied for the recognition earlier in the year as head of the SSC Sustainability Committee. After the application was submitted, representatives from The Conservation Foundation evaluated the campus grounds on two separate occasions before the distinction was made official. “I wanted the organization to be aware of our campus initiatives so we can get some recognition for the sustainable work that’s been going on here long before I arrived,” statedOfficialMyers.recognition signage can be found at the college’s rain garden, which is often inhabited by butterflies, dragonflies and bees flying throughout the area. “A lot of insects and birds in North America are in decline,” Myers added, “and that’s mostly because of a lack of habitat.” Due to the team effort of the SSC community, the college is now home to many sand pipers, blue wing teals, American toads and green frogs. Myers concluded, “I hope that local residents will follow in SSC’s footsteps, taking the opportunity to grow native plants, using a minimal amount of chemicals, and reusing rain water on their home properties whenDetailspossible.”about SSC’s recognition by The Conservation Foundation and the Sustainability Committee can be directed to Eric Myers, Ph.D. at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2318 or via email at emyers@ssc.edu. The community at large is welcome to visit the SSC rain garden, located on the southern side of the Physical Fitness and Athletic Center on the South Suburban College Main Campus, located at 15800 S. State St. South Holland, IL.

Owners are also encouraged to fill out a consent form offered on the Sheriff’s Office website that enables law enforcement agencies to more quickly obtain the cooperation of vehicle manufacturers to track stolen automobiles. Vehicle owners who have signed this consent form can also obtain stickers to display on their vehicles notifying would-be thieves that the vehicle can be tracked by investigators. These stickers are available at all Cook County courthouses. In addition to these measures, vehicle owners should remember to take precautions such as parking in a garage or in well-lit or high-traffic areas, if possible, to discourage thieves from targeting theirautomobiles.TheSouth

Suburban College (SSC) Department of Continuing, Corporate, and Community (C3) Education and the Calumet Area Industrial Commission (CAIC) have partnered to offer a free Manufacturing Skills and Training Bootcamp. This 2-week accelerated boot camp program is especially helpful for those who have been in the workforce before, but are currently or were recently unemployed, and are looking to kickstart a career in the growing manufacturing sector. Nancy Burrows, a CAIC program coordinator stated, “Many people who work in manufacturing are retiring. Companies are seeking people with a myriad of skills who are eager to advance. We are hopeful that this partnership between the CAIC and SSC will help address the needs of our communities.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a $60,000 grant to Friends of the Chicago River as part of the Environmental Education Grants Program. “When we equip communities with the right tools to raise awareness and advance environmental education, it benefits everybody,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “This funding will empower students and teachers in schools, and support community members in underserved and overburdened areas as we work together to tackle the climate crisis, advance environmental justice and deliver on our mission of protecting human health and the environment for all.” Friends of the Chicago River will use their grant funds to conduct outreach and programming with school districts, and host both teacher workshops and stewardship field trips with the goal of gaining a deeper appreciation of the Chicago-Calumet River watershed.“This environmental education grant increases our ability to provide K-12 teachers the training and personalized assistance they need to immerse students in the turbulent history, evolving ecology, and improving health of the Chicago-Calumet River system,” said Mark Hauser, ecology outreach manager of Friends of the Chicago River and head of its Chicago River Schools Network. In 2022, 34 organizations received over $3.2 million in funding for projects under the Environmental Education Grants Program. The funding ranges from $50,000 to $100,000 and is provided to organizations that supply environmental education activities and programs. This year’s grantees will conduct project activities in 24 states, including Puerto Rico.Since 1992, EPA has distributed between $2 million and $3.5 million in EE grant funding each year, for a total of over $88.3 million supporting more than 3,890 projects. The program traditionally provides financial support for projects that design, demonstrate or disseminate environmental education practices, methods or techniques. Sheriff Dart Warns Public of Spike in Thefts of Kia & Hyundai Vehicles

Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning the public about a dramatic rise in thefts of certain models of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. He is urging owners to take additional precautions to reduce the risk of theft. In the past few months, the number of such unoccupied vehicles stolen has skyrocketed in Cook County, mirroring increases reported in other cities across the country. Since July 1, there have been 642 reported thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles in Cook County, compared to 74 during the same period last year. This represents a 767% increase. “This is an extremely concerning trend and the public needs to know so they can be vigilant in protecting themselves,” Sheriff Dart said. “The Sheriff’s Office will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies and engage automakers to reduce dangerous car thefts and carjackings in Cook County.” The increases are believed to be connected to the sharing of videos on social media that demonstrate how to start these vehicles without a key. Thieves appear to be targeting unoccupied vehicles that require a physical key, not a starter button. For more detailed information about which vehicles may be susceptible to this type of theft, owners should contact the manufacturer directly. The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles to consider taking steps to reduce the threat of motor vehicle theft. Such measures include the installation of aftermarket immobilization devices (otherwise known as kill switches that render the vehicle inoperable without a separate key), car alarms with motion detection, steering wheel locking devices, or vehicle tracking systems.

PILGRIMS MARCH FOR WORLD PEACE: Thousands of Polish nationals’ march throughout Chicago and Northwest Indiana for the ills of the world every August. They start at St. Michaels Church in South Chicago and process south and east toward NW Indiana where they are pictured here crossing 173rd and Hohman Avenue in Hammond escorted by Hammond Police. The pilgrims hike over to the Carmelite Monastery on Ridge Road in Munster where they have pitched tents for the weekend. From there they travel to the Salvadorian Monastery in Merrillville to complete their pilgrimage. All through the walk, loudspeakers broadcast prayers in Polish and English as residents snap pictures on their cellphones. NEWS AND I HAVE BETTER NEWS--The good news is the Calumet City Historical Society held their August meeting Sunday August 14, 2022 anyway, despite their guest speaker’s inability to be there. The better news is that the guest speaker, Joseph S. Pete, Times columnist, had to cancel his appearance at CCHS so he and his wife could welcome a new baby into their family. So, the very resourceful CCHS decided to run the video on Joseph S. Pete’s new book, “Secret Northwest Indiana,” and offer sales of his book anyway! Mr. Pete will be back at a later date to pick up where he left off and isn’t this a cool thing to be able to tell the newcomer? Will let N 2 N readers to know who made his or her debut! Welcome to OUR WORLD Baby Pete! Indirect rollover – If you take an indirect rollover, also known as a 60-day rollover, the assets from your existing IRA will be liquidated and the custodian or plan sponsor will send you a check or deposit the funds directly into your bank or brokerage account. This payment may be subject to withholding for federal taxes, and possibly state taxes, unless you opt out of withholding. You have 60 calendar days from the time the funds were withdrawn to deposit the money, including any amount withheld, into a new IRA. If you miss this 60-day deadline, the withdrawal may be taxable at your personal income tax rate, and it could also be subject to an early withdrawal penalty if you’re younger than 59 ½. Given the immediate withholding and the possibility of further taxes if you don’t move the money into a new IRA before the 60 days are up, you’ve got much to consider before initiating an indirect rollover. Consequently, you should consult with a financial advisor and tax professional before you make this type of move. In addition to a rollover from an existing IRA, you may someday want to move the money from your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan to an IRA. This can occur when you retire or change jobs, although if you do take on another job, you might have the options of leaving your 401(k) with your former employer or rolling it over into your new employer’s plan. However, if you do want to move your 401(k) funds into an IRA, you can make what’s known as a direct rollover, in which the administrator of your old retirement plan will send you a check made payable to the custodian of your IRA. No taxes will be withheld, but you need to get the funds transferred within 60 days to avoid any potential tax issues. You spend years contributing to your IRA and 401(k) — and for good reason. So, when it’s time to move that money, be careful and consider getting help from your financial and tax professionals. These funds can play a big role in your retirement income, so manage them wisely. If you’ve been contributing to an IRA, you’ve chosen a great way to save and invest for retirement. All IRAs have potential tax and a range of investment but not all IRA providers the same features. So, if you decide that your current IRA provider is charging higher fees than you’d like, or perhaps doesn’t offer as many investment choices as you want, then you might choose to move your IRA assets to another provider. How should you go about making this switch? Here are some options to consider: Trustee-to-trustee transfer or direct rollover – You can ask the financial institution holding your IRA to move the money directly to another IRA. No taxes will be withheld from the amount transferred at the time of the transfer. This method is generally hasslefree, but some IRA sponsors will still only mail the check to your address of record, so you’d have to forward it to your new IRA.

On August 10, 2022, I wrote a letter to a client in Valparaiso to explain how her insurance policy worked. The problem she had was not remembering the major difference in the two most common Medicare supplement policies. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to her. You sent a medical bill to our Valparaiso office. They forwarded it to me to check for you. I phoned your insurance company to learn what it knew of this bill. You should pay the bill of $96.22 from (the medical firm). Here is why. You bought a Plan G Medicare supplement policy. Plan G policies DO NOT pay the Medicare Part B annual deductible. This year, that is $233. After you pay the first $233 of Medicare approved Medicare Part B claims in 2022, then Medicare and your Medicare supplement insurance policy will pay 100% of all Medicare approved Part B claims for the rest of the year. If you have questions about this, please contact your insurance agent. Thank you for allowing us to help you with your insurance needs. All the help that I give clients with Medicare related medical bill problems is FREE OF CHARGE. Giving help with such billing issues for free is one way that this agency demonstrates to our senior citizen clients that we care about them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch and try our agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online. Of Seniors F Versus Plan WILCOX Shopper Go to ISSUU.com/MyShopper

The buyer’s home inspection is a real pressure point in a real estate transaction. This is where deals can fall apart. Any positive steps taken by the seller to prepare will be well worth the time invested. A buyer has made an offer on your home and you are now “UNDER CONTRACT”. The next phase of the process is the home inspection. The inspector works for the BUYER so be sure to make your home shine! Here are ten simple tips to help eliminate the number of inspection items: If the property is vacant, make sure the utilities are ON (including the water). Take your pets out of the property for the inspection. Make sure all of your lights are functioning. This may be as simple as replacing a light bulb. Don’t let the inspector note that a light fixture is inoperable simply because the bulb is burned out. Repair or replace any broken items (which you’ve been meaning to get to). This can include door locks, windows, screens, etc. Test smoke detectors and make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed within 15 feet of all sleeping quarters. Clear the perimeter around your house so the foundation and drainage can be inspected without issue. Clean your furnace thoroughly. Replace the filter and scrub down the furnace inside and out. A shop vac usually works great for removing the dust build up inside the furnace. Make it shine! Trim tree limbs from house. The inspector will be looking at the roof and the gutters. Make sure the tree limbs are cut back so this can be easily accessed. Make sure all components are accessible to the inspector. This includes the furnace, H20 Heater, A/C, crawl space, and attic. Make sure your appliances are ready to be run. If the washer and dryer are included in operation on these appliances. Also insure that the dishwasher is empty. This will be run through a cycle. Clean your oven. This will be tested as well. Clean your house like you would if your in-laws were coming for a visit. The buyers will be spending 2 to 4 hours hanging out in your home as the inspector does his/her job. Make sure your home sparkles inside and out so they remain excited about purchasing your home.
