Mrvan Announces Winner of 2024 Congressional Art Competition from Munster High School Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced that Madalyn Martin of Munster High School is the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition. Madalyn used gouache paint to create her winning artwork, “Stan’s Bait & Tackle,” which depicts Stan’s Bait and Tackle store located in Hammond at night time.

Congressman Mrvan stated, “Thank you to all of the students from Indiana’s First Congressional District who showcased their creativity in the Congressional Art Competition. Congratulations to Madalyn from Munster High School on your outstanding achievement and exceptional display of artistic talent.”

Madalyn Martin stated, “I was working on adding a few pieces to my architecture portfolio for college and took a picture of this shop because I love the influence of Mexican architecture style on the building. I had been working on this painting in my free time for months and decided to use it as my submission for the Congressional Art Competition because I felt that the building style highlights the way that the culture of local people can impact the community as a whole.”

Elena Lopez, Art Teacher at Munster High School, stated, “Madalyn Martin has a strong sense of line, color, surface and texture, of balancing and composing her personal works. She applied these as Costume Designer for the Munster HS Theatre, and in presentation of group works for Regional Art shows. She often uses mixed media that challenges the surfaces of her works, brings a fluidity, merging the 2D and 3D Design spaces into cohesive presentations and performances. This translation of design and constructed space will serve her well, as she plans on majoring in architecture at Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning.”

Helping Widow Fight Medical Bills Totaling Over $200,000 WOODROW WILCOX On July 2, 2024, I helped a client from Highland file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection against an insurance company and two hospital companies. The combination of medical bills totaled over $200,000. All the claims were for care to her late husband during his last weeks of life.

In this case, I found evidence that she was being billed by two different hospital billing firms for the same services on the same dates of service. Medicare denied almost everything in the claims. If a claim is filed incorrectly, Medicare will deny the claims until they are filed correctly and in a timely manner.

The insurance company was refusing to pay because it did not receive any of the claims within the 15 months allowed for filing a claim. I highlighted the statements on the Medicare claims reports that showed the filings had been made within the 15-month period. I believed that the original filings with Medicare had been filed timely but not correctly by Medicare rules. If the billing companies had filed the claims correctly and timely, then the insurance company should pay on the claims. If the billing companies did not file in a correct and timely way, then those firms should “EAT THE BILLS”.

There were multiple issues in the widow’s case. The Indiana Attorney General has more leverage to force the insurance company and the two billing companies to answer questions honestly than I have. I wanted our client, the widow, to be treated honestly and well by all parties. Helping her file the complaint against three companies was what I believed would help her the most.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Unauthorized bank transfers. Identity theft. Fooled by deep fakes.

No one is too old, too young or too poor to escape being targeted by thieves.

“Cybercrime affects everyone, and the threats are constantly changing,” warns trusted cybersecurity expert Greg Schaffer. “Criminals know that accessing lots of smaller accounts can add up quickly.”

Surprisingly, Schaffer says cybercriminals aren’t always after money. “Some do it for political gains or activism. Others just want to harass people by signing them up for multiple subscriptions or restaurant reservations. This happens all the time. They count on people just ignoring things they didn’t initiate.”

Schaffer is confident there’s a better way to secure personal information and digital assets.

Most Cybercriminals Prey on Human Nature Schaffer, a sought-after virtual chief information security officer who works with small and mid-sized businesses, is passionate about sharing advice to help people protect themselves at home and in the workplace.

“Many information security issues cross over between business and personal life. Criminals can take advantage of our natural instincts.

Understanding that makes it easier to stay a few steps ahead of them.”

How To Spot and Avoid Five Common Cybersecurity Risks and Vulnerabilities Risk #1: Deep fakes. “It’s become easy to fake who is seen on video calls. One businessman, thinking he was on a video call with colleagues, complied with their request to send millions of dollars to what the businessman thought was a valid recipient. But those weren’t his colleagues.

They and the recipient were criminals. If something doesn’t feel right, text the other person’s cell phone. If they don’t respond, they may not be who they say they are.”

Risk #2: Phishing. “This often involves bad guys preying on another’s trust. For example, someone is preparing to close on a house. The criminals hack into emails between the buyer and their banker. Then they wait. At the right moment, they may send the buyer an email, seemingly from their banker, changing the wire instructions. It could result in the buyer wiring thousands of dollars somewhere else.”

He adds, “Other times, criminals rely on immediacy and urgency. For example, if they claim to be law enforcement or the IRS, don’t be rushed into taking action. Always take the time to double-check if a request or situation is legitimate.”

Risk #3: Generative AI, such as ChatGPT. “One of the biggest risks is entering confidential information. Generative AI can share what

is uploaded with the rest of the world. A technology engineer tried to solve a problem by uploading the information into ChatGPT. The engineer got the answer, but in the process, they exposed their company’s sensitive information.

It’s also common for people to use ChatGPT to help fix resumes. Never enter any identifying information such as a photo, address or educational background.”

Risk #4: Multifactor identification fatigue.

“Bad guys try to wear people down. They may bombard someone with requests to confirm login attempts they didn’t initiate. It’s annoying!

It can be tempting to confirm, just to get notifications to stop. Only now, that’s given the bad guys access to their username and password. Maybe a bank account is about to be siphoned. Never accept uninitiated requests.”

Risk #5: Home Wi-Fi network. Even with doors and windows locked, bad guys can enter homes through devices. “Usually, the place they enter a personal network is not what they’re targeting. They may enter through something as simple as a smart TV. Once they’ve breached the TV, they could jump to a laptop where someone has been working on their taxes.

There, they may find social security numbers and other sensitive financial information.

That’s a big problem! To reduce this risk, keep firewalls and laptops updated. Segment home networks: entertainment, children, home business, appliances, etc. That way, if one gets compromised, the others won’t. And never share passwords across platforms.”

If a Breach Occurs, Stop and Take a Deep Breath “One of the worst things to do is panic,” cautions Schaffer. “Not thinking clearly may increase the intensity of what’s happening. Don’t feel pressured into action. Call law enforcement.

Enlist cybersecurity experts to help.”

Answer: Don’t touch that fence -- at least not yet.

What you may have is an “easement by prescription.” This is an expression which means that property has been used by someone else in a manner that is open, notorious, adverse and continuous. If this situation has gone on for many years then your neighbor may actually be entitled to continued use of the land. Speak with an attorney for specific easement requirements in your jurisdiction.

Question: My son bought a house with a co-owner. Unfortunately, he did not get anything in writing between the two of them.

The mortgage and deed are both in my son’s name. The co-owner has paid approximately one-third of the mortgage for the last year, but now has decided he wants out because he is over extended with other real estate ventures.

Does the co-owner have any recourse if my son sells the house? My son is in for about

$10,000 in improvements, which would means there would be no profit.

Answer: What co-owner? The mortgage and the deed are in your son’s name. It’s your son’s income and credit which allowed the purchase of the property.

Why, exactly, did the other party pay anything to your son? Is the other party using some portion of the property? If yes, should not the other party be paying rent?

By any chance, does the other party have similar arrangements with other property owners?

Your son should not sell the property or pay a dime to anyone without first speaking to an attorney. At the very least, your son will want a release of liability should he elect to pay anything.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Do you ever wonder how God could possibly love you when you think of all the dishonest, hateful, and unloving things you’ve done in your life?

If so, consider this: Abraham, who God promised to be the father of many nations, lied, saying that Sarah wasn’t his wife because he was afraid a foreign king might kill him otherwise.

Moses, who God chose to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt, grew frustrated with God and was not allowed to enter the land promised to God’s people.

Rahab, who as an act of faith hid Israelite spies in the city of Jericho, had made her living as a prostitute.

David, who the Bible calls “a man after [God’s] own heart,” impregnated a married woman and had her husband killed on the battlefield.

Solomon, who God made the wisest king of his day, accumulated 700 wives and 300 concubines and sought after wealth, despite all that God had already given him.

Esther, the queen God tasked with saving His people from mass genocide, slept with the Persian king to gain his favor.

Peter, of whom Jesus said, “On this rock I will build my church,” denied that he knew his savior three times over in a misguided attempt at self-preservation.

Paul, who shepherded many early churches, made a living persecuting Christians up until his conversion.

Guess what? You’re not the first to commit terrible sins.

But rather than give us a free pass to sin, these stories provide a powerful testimony of the power of God’s forgiveness and his divine purposes. Through Jesus Christ his Son, God offers salvation to each one of us, a salvation that replaces our dark brokenness with his perfect righteousness.

Pace Bus is Hiring at South Suburban College South Holland, IL – South Suburban College (SSC) and Pace Bus are pleased to announce another pre-hiring event to provide a free Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit course for the next generation of professional bus operators in the Chicago Southland region.

The college and transportation agency will offer a customized two-week course to assist qualified applicants in obtaining their CDL permit. To remove financial barriers for students to pursue and complete the program actively, Pace will cover the costs of tuition, training, books, fees, and other expenses associated with the program. In addition, SSC, in partnership with the Workforce Equity Initiative Grant, will provide a completion incentive for participants who complete the two-week course.

On Monday, July 22, 2024, from 5:00 p.m.

– 8:00 p.m., SSC will host a pre-hiring event for job seekers to meet with Pace staff. During the 3-hour event, applicants will complete a screening process in the MB Financial Bank Room on SSC’s Main Campus, including

application completion, an assessment questionnaire, and a background check. All candidates must bring a valid Illinois driver’s license and a DMV or Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) (also called Driving Record Abstracts in Illinois) with no more than two infractions or tickets in the last five years.

Candidates are responsible for the cost of the MVR, which is $20.

Assessment results will be available 2-4 days after the event when candidates must complete an Illinois Department of Transportation physical and drug screening. Pace Bus will cover the cost of these screenings. Candidates who pass these screenings will be enrolled in a training course that will take place at SSC’s Main Campus. Qualified candidates who complete the two-week course will transition to six-week on-the-job training with Pace.

Make succession plan a priority SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN When you run your own business, your days are busy and there’s always a lot on your mind — but have you also thought about the day when you’ll leave the business?

In other words, have you started thinking about your exit strategy? If not, you have company: About one-third of business owners haven’t prepared a business succession plan, and of these owners, slightly more than a third don’t view succession planning as a priority, according to a recent survey from Morning Consult, NXT360 Partners and Edward Jones.

If you’re not close to retirement age and you’ve only had your business a short time, you might not think that creating a succession plan is a priority — or even a necessity. After all, you’ve got plenty of other things to do, such as attracting new business, dealing with competition, managing a staff, and so on. So, what benefits can you gain by prioritizing a succession plan?

Here are a few to consider: • You’ll be prepared if your plans change. You might be fully engaged in running your business now, but you can’t always foresee where you’ll be in the future. If a new opportunity came along, would you decide to take it? Or what if you experienced a health crisis and you could no longer run your business? If either of these situations were to occur, and you did not have a succession plan, you might be forced to act quickly and take steps — such as suddenly liquidating your business — that might not be in your best interest.

• You can help avoid family squabbles.

If you have family members involved in your business or those who feel they should have a financial stake in it, you’ll be doing yourself, and everyone else, a

favor by developing a business succession plan and communicating it to your family.

Your choice of successor may not please everyone, but if family members know far in advance what to expect when you exit your business, there’s less likelihood of bitter disputes that can arise when succession plans are ill-defined or poorly communicated.

• You can develop your successor’s management skills. If you’ve decided that you want an internal successor, whether it be a family member or a current employee, your succession plan will give you time to help develop this individual’s management skills, as well as their overall knowledge of your business and familiarity with your customers, vendors and other key parties.

Of course, it’s a different story if you plan to sell the business to an outsider, but even then, you’ll want to be sure the new owner has the abilities needed to succeed.

• You may help improve your company’s performance. As you prepare your succession plan, you may well find existing vulnerabilities in your business that you can address now. You also may find that you need to innovate in certain areas, define your long-term goals more clearly and identify the resources you’ll need — human and otherwise — to sustain the level of growth you desire.

It may seem a long time before you’ll leave your business, but tempus fugit — time flies.

So, put a succession plan on your to-do list.

Kevin R. Reed of Tinley Park, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 7 th , 2024 leaving behind a beautiful legacy of love, strength, and devotion to his family. He was a smart, savvy businessman who had a boisterous laugh, a ready joke, and a warm hug for all those who knew him.

Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, he was a graduate of Bogan High School where he was a star baseball player. He bravely chose to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life and married his beautiful wife, Tomi. They were happily married for 51 years. But his greatest accomplishment of all was being the best Papa to his grandson, Mikey George, who, in turn, thought the world of him too. Although his loss is immeasurable, so is the love he leaves behind.

Kevin is survived by his loving wife, Tomi, his daughter, Megan, son-in-law, Mike, his grandson, Mikey, cousin, Jami, sister-in-law, Margo, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 11th, 2024 from the hours 4:00pm until 7:00pm, at Brady-Gill Funeral Home, 16600 S. Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park, followed by a Chapel Service at 9:00am on Friday, July 12th, 2024. Interment to be held at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, IL.

Devoted Papa of Jackson and Andrew. Dear brother of the late William (Candi StegengaFry(Joe Fry)) Stegenga, Linda (John) Bumba, and Timothy (Laurel) Stegenga.

Uncle of several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Genevieve Stegenga. Bob began his career with the South Holland Police Department in 1981 and retired as Deputy Chief in 2016. He was currently serving as a Court Security Officer for the U.S. Marshalls at the Dirksen Federal Building.

He was a paramedic with South Holland for 40 years, and served as a cadet counselor with the Illiana Cadet Council for 43 years. He was a member of Munster Church in Munster, IN. Bob was known for his sense of humor and his love for his family, especially his grandsons. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

It’s time to REVIVE your life so you can enjoy all that God and life has for you. Some of us, including me, are in a pivotal stage in adulthood: middle age. Middle age ranges from 4065 years old. This is the second stage of adulthood, which marks a significant period. It’s a time when routines are firmly established, families are expanding, and careers are settled. This is an introspective period when you’re thinking about your legacy, accomplishments, and purpose.

Middle age is commonly recognized as the time when a midlife crisis can occur. Despite, the stability, many begin to wonder and question: is there more to life? Are there dreams I left unfulfilled?

What else can I do? Have I done all that I wanted to do? The resounding words “change” and “explore” become loud in your life. These questions call us to look inward. Middle age is a transformative period to reassess priorities, pursue new paths, and seek meaning.

This is the time to REVIVE your life, passions, and aspirations.

To revive is to reignite your dreams and get out of the old rigid patterns. Webster’s Dictionary defines revive as “to restore to consciousness or life”, “bring back”, and “to renew in the mind or memory”. Reviving your life is to restore the unfilled desires or goals you have. Time to repair and revitalize your important relationships. Long-term relationships get stagnant after long periods if there’s no effort to keep them alive and vibrant. This is the period to resuscitate those long-forgotten dreams of owning a business, writing a book, or traveling. Revive the things you desired but thought they had to be closeted and forgotten about.

Physically, reviving your life involves getting healthy and in shape. Being constantly busy we tend to relax on our physical health during our 30s as it seems like getting older is far in the future. Take time for a needed medical checkup and consult a doctor about a fitness plan. Include simple social physical activities such as bowling, walking, or playing pickleball with

friends to enhance your physical health and social connections.

Financial goals deserve a revival. Now is the time to revive the plans you had to start your own business, travel, or retire early.

Start a business part-time around your current position. Build on your dream of entrepreneurship, freedom, and more independence of working for yourself as you get older. Revive your future financial outlook with budgeting, building an emergency fund, and supplementing income with a side business.

Mentally, reviving your thinking is crucial. Stop dysfunctional habits and negative thought patterns that were holding you back and preventing growth. Review your current relationships to determine if they are healthy. If they are not healthy or productive, what can you do to improve them? In the workplace, revive your career by learning new skills and improving your education. Seek opportunities at work to engage in different activities to improve your work mentality. READ YOUR BILL: Treasurer Pappas tells homeowners hit by record property tax hikes to see ‘Where Your Money Goes’ Cook County taxpayers should read their property tax bills to better understand record-high increases that have walloped homeowners, especially in the south and southwest suburbs, Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.

Tax bills are posted online at cookcountytreasurer.com, where property owners may view, download and pay bills.

The Treasurer’s Office mailed bills July 2 to owners of nearly 1.8 million parcels in Cook County. The due date is Thursday, Aug. 1.

Newly redesigned bills show taxpayers, “Where Your Money Goes.” Bills show the amount of taxes owed for 2023 and how much the bill changed from 2022. The typical bill displays about a dozen taxing districts and shows how much is paid to each taxing body.

“The first thing homeowners should do about their property taxes is to read their tax bill,” Pappas said. “In order to fix the broken property tax system, you must first understand where the money goes.”

Pappas explained that this year’s record-high 19.9% increase in median homeowner tax bills in the south and southwest suburbs were the result of two factors: increases in the amount of taxes requested by schools, municipalities and other taxing agencies; and, more significantly, a shift in tax burden from businesses to homeowners that resulted from the reassessment process that determines how much each property owner pays.

The online version of “Where Your Money Goes” allows taxpayers to click links for each taxing body. Visitors who enter an address or Property Index Number can search websites for school districts and other taxing bodies to research levies, budgets and other financial information. The websitecookcountytreasurer. com also offers links to browse all financial reports filed by units of government.

Taxpayers can use the information from “Where Your Money

Goes” to contact representatives of taxing bodies with questions and to learn when budget hearings and other public meetings are held. Taxpayers can research elections for their local taxing bodies and have a say in choosing their representatives at the next election.

To help homeowners burdened by high property tax bills, Pappas led a push to slash the interest rate charged for late taxes by half, from 18% to 9% per year. The reformed state law now means property owners who do not pay their taxes in full by the due date are charged interest of 0.75% per month instead of 1.5%. Those unable to pay in full may make partial payments that can reduce the amount of interest charged.

There is no fee to pay bills at cookcountytreasurer.com from bank accounts. There is a 2.1% processing fee for those who pay with a credit card. To view, download and pay tax bills online, select the blue box labeled “Pay Online for Free.” Enter an address and Property Index Number (PIN), and a photo of the property should appear.
