Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable Members Celebrate Several Successes in the Fight against Lung Cancer May 28, 2024, Springfield, IL – The Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable in partnership with its key stakeholders are celebrating several wins in the fight against lung cancer in Illinois.

“There’s a stigma that lung cancer is a ‘smokers disease’ but in reality, anyone can get lung cancer and no one deserves it,” said Chris Draft, NFL Alumni. “In Illinois, it’s imperative that we accept the progress that has occurred over the last 10+ years, and fight to close lung cancer disparities by intentionally using the ILCRT to maximize our collaborative work in the fight against lung cancer.”

Kaitlyn Keen, American Cancer Society associate director and co-leader, Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable (ILCRT), also supported Draft’s sentiments.

“On behalf of the Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable, we are grateful for the collaboration, expertise, and passion for ending lung cancer as we know it in Illinois. We win when we work together, and Thursday’s successes exemplify the impact of leveraging key stakeholders, advocacy efforts, and plenty of work worth celebrating to drive systematic change across the lung cancer continuum,” As you know, lung cancer is prevalent in Illinois. Higher than the national incidence rate (54.0), Illinois falls at 59.3, or an annual average count of 9,319 lives across the state. Meanwhile, in 2022 ALA reported only 7% of eligible Illinois residents have been screened for lung cancer via a simple low dose CT scan.

The ILCRT continues to fight to overcome these disparities by convening stakeholders to serve as a platform for identifying gaps, sharing best practices, and informing strategic policy and systemic changes in overcoming the lung cancer burden in Illinois.

Recent wins include meeting with Governor Pritzker to celebrate his support for the Lung Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation. The ILCRT also celebrated the following

welcoming two new stakeholders to the Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable, a survivor, and a health system partner in central Illinois. The roundtable’s key partner, RUSH, hosted the Chicago Thoracic Oncology Nursing Conference: Expert Insight and Key Nursing Considerations: Treating and Caring for Patients with Lung Cancer, featuring keynote speaker Draft, formerly of the Chicago Bears.

As a result of this collaborative effort, Governor Pritzker supports challenging all 50 states to a Lung Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation in partnership with American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALSCI), the Lung Screening Network, and the Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable.

“In our 50 states challenge, the Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable is proud of this call to action and the impact of collectively increasing awareness of the lung cancer burden,” Keen said. “The opportunity to increase lung cancer screening rates and the need for additional funding for lung cancer research is critical to advancing our vision of ending cancer as we know it for everyone.”

Assessor Kaegi celebrates passage of House Bill 1377 Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi commends the Illinois state legislature for passing House Bill 1377, which encourages development by creating a homestead exemption for new residential construction.

Under this legislation, homes built by municipalities on taxexempt parcels will have their taxable value gradually phased in over 10 years. Homeowners who buy these properties will benefit from a reduction in their property taxes, while municipalities and other taxing districts will see an increase in the tax base that can lower tax rates for all residents.

“Getting new construction onto the tax rolls grows the base and shrinks the tax rate, helping everybody,” said Assessor Kaegi.

“We want to help build strong communities that foster a sense of place and create support for local businesses and civic activities.

I look forward to Governor Pritzker signing this bill into law.”

Properties built under this law and eligible for the exemption will receive a reduction in equalized assessed value (EAV) equal to 50% of their EAV for the first 8 years of eligibility, and 33% of their EAV in the final two years of eligibility.

The exemption will automatically renew, and applies to properties that have undergone environmental remediation.

This legislation aimed at incentivizing municipal-led residential development complements the Southland Reactivation Act, which was enacted in 2022 and reduces property assessments for new commercial or industrial developments on tax-exempt land.

State Rep. Norma Hernandez was chief sponsor of HB1377.

“Many Illinoisans are looking to achieve their American dream and buy their own home. Unfortunately, property tax burdens can make this dream unattainable, leaving these homes unsold or purchased by those not seeking to make that home their

permanent residence. This leads to even less construction of new homes, further reducing the options available to potential home buyers,” said Rep. Hernandez.

“This new legislation will help new home buyers with property taxes and lead to greater utilization of existing land. This bill will not only provide immediate property tax relief, but will also promote the construction of more single-family homes in areas that have been neglected or overlooked for such construction.

I am excited to see this legislation help more people achieve the American dream. I am happy to have passed this bill through this session.”

The legislation was also supported by Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey.

“We’re ecstatic about the legislation passing. It’s going to help us fill in vacant lots, revitalize our communities, and build homes that residents have been crying out for,” said Mayor Harvey. Bellwood has been at the forefront of building homes for residents since 2016. “For example, we took an old warehouse, demolished it, built 12 homes and started a new subdivision.”

“There are a lot of incentives for business owners but nothing for new homebuyers, and property taxes can be very high on new sales,” Mayor Harvey said. “We got together with President [Toni] Preckwinkle, Assessor Kaegi, State Rep. Hernandez, and State Senator [Emanuel “Chris”] Welch to sit down with us and figure out how this legislation could make sense. It was refreshing to see a team that really understood and wanted to help us out.”

“We’ve been working on this for two to three years, and it’s great to see it pass. It’ll help other communities that are looking to revitalize and get rid of vacant lots,” he continued. “It’s been a whirlwind and a beautiful thing to work so closely together to get this passed.”

by Janice R Newman How often do we find ourselves held back from reaching our goals, feeling happy, or achieving success simply because we’ve let the negative words of others or even our doubts seep into our minds? One of the most crucial factors in achieving success is learning to silence those negative voices that try to convince us that we can not and will not be successful. It can be a single negative remark from a friend, family member, or even a stranger that can shake our confidence and make us doubt our ability. These words aren’t just harmless doubts; they can seriously affect you being bold and confident in pursuing your dreams.

It’s harmful when someone else delivers these harsh comments but it’s worse when you inflict the wound yourself with self-doubt. Repeatedly allowing negative comments to flood your mind, will eventually cloud your thoughts and you start to believe the negativity also.

For example, you’re trying to lose weight, but when you discuss your goals or plans with others, they respond by bringing up past failures or saying that you can’t stick with your plans. They lack the words of support and encouragement that most of us need to pursue our goals. These negative words can plant seeds of doubt in your mind that spring up like weeds, making you question whether you’re capable of achieving your desired weight. Instantly, motivation is choked out of you. You feel discouraged and unsure of yourself. It’s hard to keep moving forward when you’re being bombarded with negativity.

Sometimes, the naysayer is not purposefully trying to discourage you, but seemingly helpful comments can hurt.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about going back to school, but every time, someone says, “You can’t afford it”, “You’re too old”, or “You don’t have what it takes”. These words can be incredibly disheartening! The messages start playing like a broken record player over and over in your mind. Making you question whether you’re capable of succeeding academically or if it’s worth the time and

money. Instead of feeling excited and gung-ho about school, you feel defeated before you’ve even begun.

You can defeat the negativity by controlling how much influence these negative voices have over you. Just because someone else doubts your abilities doesn’t mean you have to doubt yourself. King Saul and the Israelites doubted David’s ability to defeat the Goliath, but David believed in the abilities God gave him to be victorious. Proverbs 21:29 says, “The wicked bluff their way through, but the virtuous think before they act.” This verse reminds us that we have the choice to be bold and confident in our actions, regardless of what others say.

Boldness and confidence project us forward.

However, being bold doesn’t mean being reckless or ignoring valid concerns; it means having the courage to pursue your dreams despite the S.N.O.W.: situations, naysayers, obstacles, and warfare you may encounter along the way. It means believing in yourself and your abilities, even when others doubt you.

With boldness, hard work, and determination, you can overcome the challenges that come your way.

You must remember to shut the negative voices out that you hear—whether from others or yourself. If you feed the negativity you give it power over you. Negativity has no power over you unless you allow it to. Do not allow those voices to dictate your actions, create doubt, and stop you. Repeat daily positive bible verses and positive affirmations to encourage you.

Daily you must overcome negative voices, including your own, to continue striving towards your dreams which builds courage, confidence, and belief in yourself. You must learn to silence the doubters and naysayers by choosing instead to listen to the voice within us that knows we are capable. So be bold, and confident, and achieve what you set your mind to. 90 years ago, a woman in the Philippines was raped.

Nine months later, that woman had a child — a child that grew up without a biological father. Decades passed, and that baby girl grew up, got married, and gave birth to seven children of her own.

Her middle child — the only girl of the family — grew up in the Philippines and eventually moved to the United States and got married. Here in America, that woman had three children of her own. The youngest of them was born 25 years ago, a sweet baby girl who grew into a beautiful woman.

Three years ago, I married that woman.

My wife owes her life — in a biological sense — to an awful, sinful event that violated her great-grandmother 90 years ago. But in a more ultimate sense, my wife owes her life to the providence of God. I can only imagine how my wife’s great-grandmother must have felt in her pain, shame, and desperation at that time. Nine decades later, I can’t help but cry when I think of how beautiful God’s plans are and how His promise in Romans 8:28 that “all things work together for good,” has been realized.

If you feel tossed about by terrible sin in your life or the lives of your loved ones, know that God promises that the suffering of His children is not in vain.

Joni Eareckson Tada once said, “Sometimes God uses what He hates to accomplish what He loves.”

No better example of that truth can be found than Jesus Christ on the cross. God used what He hated — sending His son to die an unjust, brutal death — to accomplish what He loves — you and me, freed from our sin and adopted into His family.

No matter the depth of sin and despair in your life, God’s love runs deeper still.

Illinois wheat farmers achieve impressive yields with improved production practices

By RHIANNON BRANCH FarmWeek Cooperative weather has helped Illinois farmers achieve impressive winter wheat yields the past few seasons, but a retiring grain merchandiser said the yields are also a display of improved production.

May 21 was the last official Illinois Winter Wheat Tour for longtime group leader Dave Devore, who is retiring at the end of the month from Siemer Milling Co. in Teutopolis, where he has purchased wheat since 1995.

“When I first came in ’95, we didn’t have the fungicide we have now. We didn’t have the knowledge as far as nitrogen application amounts and timing of nitrogen to help the wheat crop,” he told FarmWeek.

“I’d have to go back and look for sure, but I want to say in 1995 the average state yield in Illinois was maybe around 60 (bushels per acre). And now we had 80 last year, which was a high, and a lot of 100-plus bushel yields all over the state.”

He said that has been good for Siemer Milling as they have not had to reach out as far to buy wheat coming into the facility.

“Farmers have been able to minimize their risk of quality and if you’ve got good quality, you’ve got good quantity, and the yields are going to be there,” Devore said.

He is staying busy in the final days of his career as farmers jump on a rally in prices.

“That’s another thing I think has changed: farmers’ confidence in selling ahead because they now know how to grow a better quality crop,” he said. “They’re not

just selling for this year, but for 2025, and I even have a few contracts for June and July of 2026. So, they’re taking advantage of it, as they should.”

While scouting fields this year, Devore is concerned about how the wet spring could impact crop quality, noting he has seen more fusarium head blight this season. But there is still plenty of optimism for high yields.

“I wouldn’t have guessed that we would see as many 120-bushel yields as we did last year and I think we’ve been in fields this year that are very similar to what we saw last year,” he said.

“So, I think if disease doesn’t affect the yield, we’re looking at several 100-plusbushel yields from what we’ve seen so far.”

He said warm weather could also push harvest five to seven days ahead of normal, and weather conditions over the next 10 days will be a determining factor on when farmers get their combines out.

“If we have more of these almost 90-degree days with the wind blowing then, yeah, it’s going to be sooner rather than later,” Devore said. “A lot of guys I’ve talked to think they’re going to be out here in three weeks, which puts you around the June 10 or 15 timeframe.”

Laura Widstrand, age 89, of Lansing, IL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis & Marion Blocker, and her loving husband, George A. Widstrand II. Laura was the devoted mother of Randy (Christine) Widstrand, Jeff (Linda) Widstrand, David Widstrand, and the late George Widstrand III. She cherished her role as grandmother of 12 grandchildren: Melissa (Patrick) Doud, Katie (Jay) Williamson, Eric (Megan) Widstrand, Miranda (Demetrios) Arapakis, Monica (Joel) Widstrand, Bryan (Stacy) Widstrand, Michael (Emily) Widstrand, Laurie (John) Bart, Megan (Dylan) Zimmerman, Kelsey (Brad) Duncan, Connor Widstrand

and Logan Widstrand; and 18 great-grandchildren: Elijah, Natalie, Claire, Lydia, Annie, Lincoln, Owen, Anna, Lila, Joryn, Allora, Holly, Cyrus, Griffin, Blake, Emma, Logan and Olivia. Laura was blessed to grow up with her six siblings: Jim (late Deborah) Blocker, the late Marge (Ed) Kovach, the late Geraldine (late Bill) Griffin, the late Edward (late Gerri) Blocker, the late Tom Blocker, and the late Gerald (Therese) Blocker.

She was a wonderful aunt to many nieces and nephews, who she dearly loved.

Laura and George were married on October 16, 1952 and enjoyed 55 years together. They co-owned Burnham Cakette Bakery in Calumet City, IL. She worked as a bookkeeper at Associated Allergist for many years until her retirement. She lovingly cared for George as his health declined prior to his death in 2008.

Laura was a fantastic cook and baker; her chocolate chip cookies were a staple of family events. Her cooking brought together her loved ones, and leftovers were few and highly sought after. It was a rare occurrence for anyone to leave her home without a homemade treat or meal. Her grandchildren fondly remember the corner cabinet, always stocked with their favorite candies, and the many varieties of Christmas cookies she faithfully baked each year for Christmas Eve. Laura was an avid sports fan. She was devoted to her Chicago Cubs from the time she was a young girl. Whether they were winning or losing, she rarely missed watching or listening to a game. She was understandably ecstatic when they won the World Series in 2016. To her final days, she would frequently request the score of a game.

She enjoyed her time in her bowling league, boasting an average of 180, and always looked forward to playing in her ladies’ local pinochle club.

Laura loved being a grandmother and enjoyed spending time with each of her grandchildren. Holding and loving on babies was a favorite pastime, and her grandchildren provided a steady stream of greatgrandchildren for her to dote on. She would frequently say, “Give that baby a kiss on the neck for me!” before ending a phone conversation.

Family and loved ones are invited to gather for a memorial visitation at All Souls Catholic Parish /St. Ann Church, 3010 Ridge Road Lansing, IL on Monday, June 3, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m. Private inurnment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery – Calumet City, IL. What Caused The Balance?

On May 2, 2024, I wrote a letter to a medical firm for a client from Dyer, Indiana.

The client had brought the bill to our office in Schererville and that office forwarded the bill to me to check for the client.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm.

Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill is dated 03/28/2024 and seeks a balance of $66.90 on Guarantor ID XXXXXX for services rendered during November 2023.

I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that the Medicare EOB that it received from Medicare showed no balance after the insurance company sent to your firm $657.30 which is exactly what your bill to our client shows the secondary insurer paid your firm. So, how did you arrive at the balance of $66.90?

I helped our client to request a current Medicare Summary Notice about this claim.

When he gets that, he is to get that to me to compare it against your bill.

The only thing that I can think of possibly

causing a balance is if you filed an amended claim and Medicare ruled on that without sending an updated ruling to the secondary insurer. Please, check your calculations to spot if someone at your firm made a mistake.

If so, please correct it and report that to our client.

Don’t let investments take a vacation SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Summertime is almost here — and for many people that means it’s time to hit the road. But even if you decide to take a vacation, you’ll want other areas of your life to keep working — especially your investments.

So, how can you prevent your investments, and your overall financial strategy, from going on “vacation”? Here are a few suggestions: • Check your progress. You want your investments to be working hard for you, so you’ll need to check on their performance periodically — but be careful about how you evaluate results. Don’t compare your portfolio’s results against those of a market index, such as the S&P 500, which tracks the stock performance of 500 large U.S. companies listed on American stock exchanges. This comparison may not be particularly valid because your own portfolio ideally should include a range of investments, including U.S. and foreign stocks, corporate and government bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other securities.

So, instead of checking your progress against a market index, use benchmarks meaningful to your individual situation, such as whether your portfolio is showing enough growth potential based on a compounding rate of return to keep you moving toward a comfortable retirement and other long-term goals.

• Invest with a purpose. When you work intensely at something, it’s usually because you have a definite result in mind. And this sense of purpose applies to investing, too. If you buy a stock here, and another one there, based on “hot” tips you might have seen on television or the internet, you may end up with a jumbled sort of portfolio that doesn’t really reflect your needs. Instead, try to follow a long-term investment strategy based on your financial goals, risk tolerance, asset accumulation needs,

liquidity and time horizon, always with an eye toward where you want to go in life — how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on.

• Be strategic with your investments.

Over the years, you will likely have a variety of competing financial goals — and you’ll want your investment portfolio working to help achieve all of them. That means, though, that you’ll likely need to match certain investments with specific goals. For example, when you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan, you’re putting away money for retirement. But if you want to help your children go to college or receive some other type of post-secondary education or training, you might want to save in a 529 education savings plan, which allows tax-free withdrawals for qualified education expenses. Or, if you want to save for a short-term goal, such as a wedding or a long vacation, you might choose an investment that offers significant protection of principal, so the money will be available when you need it. Ultimately, this type of goalsbased investing can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended.

When you take a vacation, you will hopefully be more relaxed and refreshed.

But if you let your investments stop working as hard as they should, the results could be stressful. So, be diligent about your investment strategy, monitor it regularly and make those moves appropriate for your situation. By doing so, you can’t necessarily guarantee a long day at the beach, but you’ll have a good chance of enjoying a sunny outlook.
