Top 3 tips to help teens boost their self-esteem Tip #1: Avoid excessive exposure to social media When possible, eliminate or really reduce the use of social media. This is particularly true if social media is recognized as part of the esteem issue. If your teen struggles with body image, lifestyle comparison or feelings of inadequacy social media may be a piece of that puzzle. Setting some limits, like turning off all technology a couple of hours before bed and limited overall time on social media, is a good place to start. However, this might be difficult as you get resistance. You might then consider having some conversations about social media and its impact and invite your teen into the conversation rather than it being a lecture. Tip #2: Use thought stopping Another strategy is to use thought-stopping. We cannot control a thought when it comes into your head, but we can control what we do

with the thought. Don’t hang on to a negative thought. Instead, say ‘stop’ and think of something else. Over time this will help to create new neural connections in your brain instead of circling the negativity drain. Helping teens understand they can have control over how they handle thoughts is a powerful way to build self-esteem. Tip #3: Build mastery Find an activity that you enjoy and work toward building mastery. This will not only encourage you to find a group of people with similar interests, but it will also build your sense of worth within yourself and within the group. Start by sampling some things that you have a smidgeon of interest in and explore them. If it is a sport, commit to the season. If it is a new hobby or club, give it at least 3 months of your time. Building mastery is a great way to solidify your confidence.

Financial Advice Column

Financial Tips for the Self-Employed SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Being self-employed has some benefits: You get to choose your own hours, you don’t have to count “vacation days” and you’ll never worry about getting downsized. On the other hand, you’re truly on your own – there’s no employersponsored retirement plan and no benefits package. So, if you’ve recently started a business or become a “gig worker,” possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, what can you do to get on the road to financial security? There are several steps you can take, including the following: Establish a budget. When you’re self-employed – and especially when you’re first starting out – you need to keep tight control over where your money is going. So, establish a budget and stick to it. Open a retirement plan. As a self-employed individual, you can choose a retirement plan, such as a SEP-IRA, a SIMPLE-IRA or an “owner-only” 401(k). When your earnings are limited, you can contribute modest amounts to any of these plans, but when your income rises, you can boost your contributions. While these retirement plans have some things in common, including tax-deferred growth of earnings, they differ in other areas, such as contribution limits, and one plan may be more suitable for you than another, depending on whether you have employees. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine which plan is best for your needs. Build an emergency fund. When you work for a business or other organization, your income is predictable – but that’s usually not the case when you’re self-employed. And when your earnings are uneven, you can be vulnerable to financial stress when you face an unexpected expense. To help protect yourself from these threats, try to gradually build an emergency fund containing a few months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Pay down your debts. Some debts, such as loans to help your business, may be unavoidable – and even productive. But other debts, especially those that can’t be deducted from your taxes and carry a high interest rate, are far less useful, so you may want to set up a repayment plan. With your other expenses, you might not be able to whittle these debts down as fast you’d like, but, over time, your efforts can pay off. Put money aside for taxes. Because no employer is withholding taxes from your paychecks, you will likely have to make quarterly estimated payments. Plus, you’re responsible for all your Social Security taxes, which, if you worked for someone else, would be split between you and your employer. To make sure you’ve got enough money available to pay your taxes, you might want to set up a special account – one that’s not used for any other purpose. Get proper insurance. Depending on the nature of your work, you may or may not need some type of business insurance, but if you have a family, you should certainly consider the need for life insurance, and you may also want to consider disability insurance. Self-employment can be quite fulfilling – and you’ll find it even more rewarding when you make the right financial moves. MEMORIAL DAY 2021 CEREMONY AT THE FAMED SOLDIER’S WALL IN SOUTH CHICAGO: Pictured here is the aging wall (51 this year and in need of refurbishment) at the start of the remembrance. Pictured here is Larry Kutz, president of the SSEVV along with Joe Sanchez coordinator of the event and of the DAV and South Deering American Legion along with Omar Medellin, photographer for SSEVV and Jose Cruz. Fr. Steve Niskanen, associate pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 91st and Brandon Avenue gave the invocation and Marty Castor, whose Dad was instrumental in creating the wall dedicated to the fallen soldiers served as emcee. The group plan a 2022 rededication to the wall. A Go Fund Me website is being created to cover the costs ($12,000$15,000) of refurbishment. Special added attraction this year was WTTW-Channel 11 filming the event. Some 150 people were on hand for the event. Among the soldiers on the wall are: Ed Cervantes, a Bat Boy for the White Sox who lived in the neighborhood, Peter Rodriguez, Joseph Quiroz, Arturo G. Chavez and Manual S. Miranda. ***

QUIK SCRIPTS--A FAMILY PHARMACY WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT: The newer, privately owned pharmacy with locations in Lansing (3330 Ridge Road), Griffith, In (303 North Broad), Schererville, (10865 Maple Lane, Suite C) and Beecher (715 S. Dixie Highway) have been open since 2011 for the Lansing store and 2018 respectively for the other locations. David, 48 and Daria, 31 Davila are pictured here with their children, twins, David and Daria, 3 in their custom go cart that was just featured in the Lansing Good Neighbor Parade, May 1st, 2021.By way of background, David was a 20 year veteran of the ‘big’ pharmacies’ like Walgreens and CVS. He went into the work of being a pharmacist with almost messianic zeal--but soon tired of the bureaucracy and decided to start his own shop in Lansing in 2011. One of their first customers was none other than our great and good friend Jimmy Kane! Fast forward to 2017-18 and along came Griffith, St. John and Beecher. Daria notes that the children are always with them, at the shops and socially. David is the licensed pharmacist and Daria is the business manager. Their customers are never far from their thoughts, and they give TLC to all who come to Quik Scripts. Just ask Jimmy Kane--”They are great, the best,” notes the Lansing resident formerly with the public works department. “ I send all my friends to them!” ***

Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We have a bedroom in our basement. The appraiser said it is not a bedroom and our home appraised at less than sale price. How could they say it is not a bedroom when we have beds in there and our sons slept there for 13 years? We are furious! Answer: I understand your frustration. You have a nice home, both parties agreed to the sale price, you made it through the home inspection and everyone is happy. Then the appraiser steps in and ruins this perfect deal. Although your home obviously has a bedroom in the basement, it does not meet the bedroom criteria that an appraiser uses. This may vary from state to state, but generally a bedroom is considered a bedroom by an appraiser if it has 2 ways of egress (door and/or window). The bedroom must be at least 70 sq. ft, and it cannot be smaller than 7 ft in any horizontal direction. Sorry, that

2’x35’ room is not a bedroom. The escape window or door must be at least 5.7 sq. ft for an opening. But guess what? It doesn’t need a closet according to the appraiser! NOTE: It would be a good idea to put at least an armoire in that bedroom to satisfy your buyer. The Conclusion: It may look like a bedroom, it may have a bed like a bedroom and you sleep in it like a bedroom, but according to the appraiser, it doesn’t quack like a bedroom. Only 1 in 3 Illinois parents understand teen slang To parents, it must seem that their offspring speak a different language half the time, especially if they’re online playing games with friends. When it comes to slang and gaming lingo, then they literally do. Messaging each other with acronyms such as TTYL, ROFL or GOAT, teens immediately get what their friends are saying, even if it comes across as a weird, alien terminology (okay, we’ll translate: Talk to You Later; Roll on the Floor Laughing; Greatest of All Time). But how much do parents really understand? Solitaired.com quizzed 3,000 parents to find out, testing their knowledge of general and online gaming phrases… Perhaps unsurprisingly, they didn’t come out of this well. Almost 1 in 3 (31%) Illinois parents were able to understand the meaning of words like ‘Lit’ [amazing, cool or exciting], ‘Dope [cool or awesome]’, ‘Thirsty’ [trying to get attention], ‘Snatched’ [looking good, perfect or fashionable] or ‘Shook’ [to be shocked or shaken up]. The rest showed themselves up as total ‘Noobs’ [a person who doesn’t know what they’re doing or who is bad at something; in other words, a newbie], frankly. However, moms can congratulate themselves a bit more; 29% of them knew what most of the terms meant, unlike only 24% of dads. And broken down by state, Alaska parents are the most lit, scoring a dope 66%. They’d probably throw shade [give a dirty look] at parents in Montana, who could only manage a lame 7%. And when it comes to online games, one of the most interesting results from the survey, given that kids have mostly been off school for the

past year, is how many parents now view their offsprings’ obsession with it as a blessing. 40% of parents have changed their attitudes towards online games since the start of the pandemic, and are seeing it as a positive, rather than something the kids can’t be dragged away from. Parents have been crediting online games as providing them with the opportunity to get precious time to do their jobs, prepare meals, and even get some quiet time away from the rest of the family. And they have, on average, allowed their kids to spend roughly 41% more time online than before the pandemic. Their views of the benefits include that it’s a boost to their kids’ reading skills (9% of parents agreed); good for visual-spatial skills (9%); good for problem-solving (38%); provides good social connections for those playing against friend or those with similar interests (16%); that it’s good for creativity (16%); and an optimistic 13% feel it could turn into a career. Over half of parents (56%) admit that lockdowns would have been harder without their kids having access to online games. But that aside, it’s nice to hear that 55% of parents say they’ve bonded more with their children since the start of the pandemic. ‘It’s something that would have been totally unexpected in pre-pandemic times: parents now view online games in an overwhelmingly positive way’ says says Neal Taparia from Solitaired.com. ‘Rather than have to drag kids away from laptops and consoles, they now appear to recognize online gaming’s overwhelmingly positive attributes.’

Speaking Of Seniors

SAVED CEDAR LAKE FAMILY OVER $2,000 WOODROW WILCOX On February 11 and 12 of 2021, protected the surviving family of our deceased client over $2,000. On February 11, I investigated the bill. On February 12, I wrote a letter scolding the firm that sent the wrongful bill. This is what I do every day to protect our senior citizen clients from mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. I wish more people would learn how to help seniors to correct wrongful Medicare related medical bills. The insurance agency where I work hired me to protect its clients from wrongful bills to demonstrate that the owners and staff really do care about our clients. It is an extra service that the agency is not legally required to give clients. Our clients seem to appreciate my work. Following is the letter that I sent to protect the Cedar Lake family with some editing to protect our client’s privacy. Dear Representative, The family of our deceased client brought a bill from your firm to our firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $2,114.69 on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on three different dates in December 2020. The date of the statement is 01/29/2021. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this bill. It reported that your bill to our client is FALSE. Here is why. All the proper balances on the bill (i.e., $10.11, $19.05, $5.51, and $7.64) were

paid by our client’s secondary insurer on 01/05/2021 in a bulk check for $149.86 via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) with transaction confirmation # XXXXXX. In other words, your firm got paid on 01/05/2021 but never bothered to credit our client’s account by the time you sent the bill on 01/29/2021. Someone at your firm failed to credit that payment to the account of our client. In addition to that, someone at your firm failed to discount the bill for the Medicare adjustment. That is a serious breach of Medicare rules. Your bill to our client is an attempt to wrongfully collect $2,114.69 from our client and her surviving family. I consider that a very serious breach of ethics. A duplicate Medicare Summary Notice on all these claims has been ordered. That document with the Explanation Of Benefits from the secondary insurer will confirm your failure to account for payments from Medicare and adjust the bill according to Medicare’s ruling for the claim adjustment. Please, do the honest thing and correct your errors. If you believe anything that I have alleged in this letter is untrue, explain your position in writing. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by correcting false medical bills. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available online and at many booksellers.

SOUTH HOLLAND MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION

HOLD STEADY ELDER PHYLLIS NEUMAN BROWN, FREE SPIRIT MINISTERIAL WORSHIP CENTER It has been quite apparent lately that things in this life are changing. We are or have been experiencing situations and circumstances like none other. At times, we may feel like a ship without a sail that is tossed back and forth. Other times, we may feel like we are on a wobbling ladder that is swaying side to side. It is in those moments of time that we must remember that we have a choice. We can fear an inevitable outcome or we can steady ourselves and ride out the storm. Life, and the issues that we face as we navigate through it, can be hard, challenging and scary. The one thing that helps a Christian to hold steady and survive during these storms of life is the assurance that God is with us to help us. Isaiah 41:3 states, “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” It is God who holds us as we grab His hand. All we need to do is hold steady to God as He “takes hold” of our hand and our life. “Do not fear.” He will help. We stress when we

feel alone and helpless. Then our helplessness creates hopelessness. We have never been promised a life without problems and challenges, but we have been assured that God would never leave us nor forsake us. We are assured that with God all things are possible; therefore, we do not need to lose hope. During those challenging moments of life, I want to encourage you to hold steady. Maintain emotional groundedness, stay firm in your determination, remain consistent and unwavering in the knowledge that God is with you always. He will help you and He will bring you out of whatever situation you are facing. Hold steady to the fact that He knows how much you can bear and that He has already prepared a way of escape for you. You are more than a conqueror and God is always concerned about the things that concern you. Hold Steady and watch God work!

Please arrive in a vehicle and feel free to bring chairs and snacks to enjoy while waiting for the show to start! ... South Holland School District 151 working to make the Community Covid Free As schools begin to end the school year, there is an undeniable fact that some parents are still hesitant about sending their children back to school. This unfortunate reality is wrought with emotions, feelings of insecurity, and fear. South Holland School District 151 hopes to help parents make informed decisions. We want to put those fears to rest and get students back in school. We are hosting and providing a Vaccine Clinic at Madison School (15700 Orchid Dr. South Holland, IL. 60473) on June 4th from 12-6 p.m. The Pfizer Vaccine will be available for those 12 and older. Appointments are required. Please call 708 339-1516 to make an appointment. We know that in person learning is what students need. Data compiled by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) maintains that in person learning does the following: • Provides better communication between students and teachers. • Provides students with critical academic services. • Decreases disparities in educational outcomes. • Improves the mental health of children. • It helps children develop better social skills. These five areas are just a small example of why in person learning is so needed. Getting the vaccine may help students and parents outlook on education and reassess their position on sending their child back to school. Dr. Jerald McNair Principal of Madison School ..

MIKE BUDER Some of today’s buyers are now using escalation clause riders in their offers in order to catch the seller’s attention. With an escalation clause the buyer is willing to raise their current offer at some amount more than the next highest offer. So, for example if a house is listed at $200,000 and the buyer wants to offer more than $200,000 in order to beat out the other buyers, the buyer can offer $200,000 as their initial offer and escalate that amount by $500 or $1,000 more than the next highest offer. Generally, an escalation clause should have an upper limit which means the buyer is willing to raise their offer up to a certain amount and then after that they are not interested. In the case of the $200,000 buyer offer they are willing to raise their offer by $1,000 over the next highest offer but no higher than $225,000 then the escalation clause is stopped out. A properly written escalation clause should also require written proof of the next highest offer so that the buyer knows there is indeed a legitimate offer that raised their offer price.

Faith Church and Habitat NWI Team Up to Build New Lake Station Home Faith Church Highland partnered with Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana to build walls for a new home being built for a Habitat partner family in Lake Station, Indiana. Faith Church provided a volunteer group of 35 to build all 32 interior and exterior walls as well as funds to cover materials. All the walls were built in the Faith Church parking lot on Grace Street in Highland, Indiana. Pastor Tim Huizenga, at Faith Church Highland stated, “This was an incredible weekend building the walls for an entire house. Faith Church is honored to partner with such an amazing organization like Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana! It was especially great to meet and work alongside Krystle and her family, who will be moving into this particular house. We look

forward to many more opportunities to serve our Region in this way.” “Faith Church has been a wonderful partner to Habitat. We are thrilled for their support of our mission and the work they’ve committed to help us stabilize yet another family in Lake County through homeownership.” stated Dawn Michaels, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana. “It’s transformational for Krystle’s family and it’s good for the community too!” Krystle Eckels and her family will move into a neighborhood in Lake Station. “To see and work with all these wonderful people to build the walls for my home is a blessing. My kids and I now see our future home is becoming a reality!” Krystal was moved to tears.

Another very important point to address when using an escalation clause is unless you are a cash buyer with a current proof of funds to attach to the offer, you need to make sure that your mortgage pre-approval covers at least the highest price you are willing to offer. Home buyers should be working with Real Estate Agents who have experience using escalation offers and look to their agent for pricing guidance. Escalation offers when written and used properly can make a buyer more competitive and limit their risk of overbidding at the same time.
