As the world prepares to celebrate National Cancer Survivor Day on June 2nd, the eight women behind the American Cancer Society’s 2024 ‘Portraits of Hope Chicago’ Ambassadors stand in solidarity with each as other courageous survivors of breast cancer. In a stirring display of resilience and determination, these brave individuals are taking center stage this spring to get the word out about prevention and awareness.

They are not doing it alone.

“This past year has shown me the magnitude of my own strength and the depths of my courage. Now it is time to channel that strength into helping others,” said Lindsey Johnson, a Portraits of Hope Chicago Ambassador and sales professional.

“My story is not unique, but I hope that in sharing it others will feel less alone in their journeys.”

These remarkable individuals, hailing from diverse backgrounds, neighborhoods, and experiences, embody the spirit of hope and resilience. They are the faces of triumph over adversity, united in mission to spread awareness, igniting change.

Each have their own experiences to share on National Cancer Survivor Day. “After enduring 16 rounds of chemo, a lumpectomy, and radiation, I am still mentally healing two years later,” said Rumaisa Rahman, also an Ambassador and life coach. “I’m sharing my story to encourage others to prioritize their mammograms.

National Cancer Survivor Day is a poignant celebration of life, resilience, and the enduring spirit of those who have faced cancer. It serves as a beacon of hope, honoring survivors while offering support and encouragement to those currently battling the disease. On this day, the women behind Portraits of Hope Chicago (pending availability) would like to come together to celebrate milestones, share stories of triumph, and reaffirm their commitment to the fight against cancer.

Through unity and compassion, they want to remind our communities in Chicago facing a cancer diagnosis that they are not alone in their journey. Together, they stand as a testament to the power of perseverance and the promise of brighter days ahead – and hopefully – as survivors.

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you own a business and you offer a 401(k) or similar retirement plan to your employees, you’ll want to stay current on the various changes affecting these types of accounts. And in 2024, you may find some interesting new developments to consider.

These changes are part of the SECURE 2.0 Act, enacted at the end of 2022. And while some parts of the law went into effect in 2023 — such as the new tax credit for employer contributions to start-up retirement plans with 100 or fewer employees — others were only enacted this year.

Here are some of these changes that may interest you: • New “starter” 401(k)/403(b) – If you haven’t already established a retirement plan, you can now offer a “starter” 401(k) or “safe harbor” 403(b) plan to employees who meet age and service requirements. These plans have lower contribution limits ($6,000 per year, or $7,000 for those 50 or older) than a typical 401(k) or 403(b) and employers can’t make matching or nonelective contributions. These plans are low-cost and easy to administer but the credit for employer contributions doesn’t apply, as these contributions aren’t allowed, and since start-up costs are low, the tax credit for these costs will be correspondingly lower than they’d be for a full-scale 401(k) plan.

• Matches for student loan payments – It’s not easy for young employees to save for retirement and pay back student loans. To help address this problem, Congress included a provision in Secure 2.0 that allows employers the option to provide matching contributions to employees’ retirement plans (401(k), 403(b), 457(b) and SIMPLE IRAs) when these employees make qualified student loan payments. Of course, if you offer this match for student loan payments, your costs will likely increase, although these matching contributions are tax deductible. In any case, you may want to balance any additional expense with

the potential benefit of attracting and retaining employees, particularly those who have recently graduated from college.

• 401(k) eligibility for part-time employees – Part-time employees who are at least 21 years old and have at least 500 hours of service in three consecutive years must now be eligible to contribute to an existing 401(k) plan. The inclusion of parttime employees could lead to higher business expenses for you, depending on the amount of contributions you may make to employees’ plans. Again, though, you’d be offering a benefit that could be attractive to quality part-time employees.

• Emergency savings account – Many people, especially those who don’t earn high incomes, have trouble building up emergency funds they can tap for unexpected costs, such as a major home or car repair or large medical expenses. Now, if you offer a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan, you can include a pension-linked emergency savings account (PLESA) that allows non-highly compensated employees to save up to $2,500, a figure that will be indexed for inflation in the future.

PLESA allows for tax-free monthly withdrawals without incurring a 10% tax penalty. PLESA contributions are made on an after-tax (Roth) basis and must be matched at the same rate as other employee contributions.

You may want to consult with your tax and financial professionals to determine how these changes may affect what you want to do with your retirement plan. The more you know, the better your decisions likely will be.

Speaking Of Seniors

Crack A Whip On Medicare WOODROW WILCOX We need a President and a majority in Congress to CRACK A WHIP ON MEDICARE. That is what over 21 years of helping senior citizens has taught me.

When a senior citizen joins Medicare and gets a Medicare supplement insurance policy or other coverage, Medicare starts a file on that senior. The problem is that when Medicare gets the information, it does not record that information right away. It lags in doing its essential work.

Likewise, when a senior citizen shops for a better or less expensive Medicare supplement policy or other Medicare related policy and switches to a different company, often Medicare does not update the file for months or years.

That is so unfair to senior citizens. Here is why.

When that happens, the senior is paying for insurance that does not work because Medicare lags in updating the senior’s file.

The insurance company that the senior has does not get the claim information from Medicare to pay a claim. The medical service provider starts to hound a senior citizen to pay the balance that the insurance company did not pay because it never got the claim information from Medicare. This unfairly causes stress on the senior.

We have computers now. Why can’t Medicare update its records within three business days? It is because no one in the federal government cares about a problem that seniors have because of a lack of

good, responsible management by federal government officials and contractors. If they can’t do the job correctly, why not fire them (or the contractor companies) and replace them with others who want to do the job in a correct and timely manner?

The day that I wrote this article, a senior citizen from Crown Point brought to me a medical bill from a local hospital. The hospital wants to be paid the balance owed on several dates of service. I checked with the Medicare supplement insurance company. Medicare had not sent any claims to the insurance company for several months.

The dates of service for the senior ranged from August 2023 through February 2024.

Medicare failed to send any of the five claim episodes to the senior’s Medicare supplement insurance company. The insurance company stands ready and willing to pay the claims but it can’t get the federal agency managers, employees, and contractors to do their jobs in a professional and timely manner. So, why do we keep these Medicare workers employed?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana.

He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Matthew 25 says the Lord will return and separate the sheep and the goats. To the first group he’ll offer a full inheritance, saying they fed him, invited him in, clothed him, and visited him.

Matthew 25:37–40 says, “The righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

He’ll curse the second group to the “eternal fire,” explaining that in all the same situations, they didn’t help “the least of these.”

The chapter ends with, “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life,” What a powerful admonition to care for the “least of these!”

The Bible tells us that discomfort, sacrifice, and a profound priority for others is crucial to being Jesus-followers — and crucial to one day joining Him in our eternal inheritance.

There are many marks of true faith, and God tells us that one of them is love-based sacrifice.

I recently heard Dr. Crawford Loritts speak at the Chicagoland Prison Outreach anniversary dinner. He powerfully said, “Sacrifice is the signature of love.” Sacrifice is what authenticates our love. Sacrifice is love’s true proof.

That was true of Jesus Christ as he gave up his spirit on the cross, and it’s true of you and me today.

JUNE IS PTSD AWARENESS MONTH National PTSD Awareness Month, which takes place each June, ushers in an array of awareness campaigns run for the benefit of PTSD Survivors. PTSD, which stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, occurs in people after they have experienced a particularly traumatic event like war, violent physical/sexual/verbal assault, accidents, and so forth. Symptoms include depression, anxiety, nightmares, paranoia, insomnia, disturbing thoughts, and much more. Many people recover from PTSD after a few days, weeks, or months. Yet, for others, the recovery road might mean one year or more. This mental disorder is treatable, but due to the lack of knowledge about it, as well as the stigma attached to seeking mental help, many choose to ignore the problem and suffer through it.

Some studies suggest that suicide risk is higher among those who experienced trauma due to the symptoms of PTSD. A study from the National Comorbidity Survey, a national representative sample, showed that PTSD alone was significantly associated with suicidal ideation or attempts. A later study by the Canadian Community Health Survey data also found that respondents with PTSD were at a higher risk for suicide attempts. Among people who have had a diagnosis of PTSD at some point in their lifetime, approximately 27% have also attempted suicide. Another large-scale survey found that 24% of military personnel diagnosed with PTSD had experienced suicidal thinking within the past year.

According to the Journal of Emergency Services, a silent crisis is happening worldwide. First responders are quietly suffering because of the stigma surrounding the utilization of mental health services.

First responders are approximately ten times more likely to have suicidal ideations and/or attempt suicide compared to the CDC national average.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a free resource, available 24 hours a day for anyone who is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

988 offers a free 24/7 text line where trained counselors support individuals in crisis.

The Jason Foundation is another available resource. The Jason Foundation offers the First Responders Training Module: Addressing Suicide with Youth in the Community and Within the Profession.

The goal of this training is to provide First Responders with the knowledge, skills, and resources to enable them to be better able to recognize the signs of concern and elevated risk factors for suicidal ideation in youth within their community, as well as in co-workers and fellow first responders. The training is free and can be found online at www.jasonfoundation.com under the How To Get Involved tab.

“Cloudstorming,” “Idea Harvesting,” “Strategy Quilting,” and “Hyper-Tasking” are just some of the managerial buzzwords that have gained traction in the corporate sphere in recent years. However, their effectiveness, particularly in motivating employees, is debatable. A manager might use them with the best intentions, but they can often have the opposite effect, often hindering rather than helping, revealing a clear disconnect between managerial speak and employee motivation.

The global outplacement and career development experts at Careerminds.com carried out a survey of 3,000 employees to uncover the most detested corporate jargon used by their managers. The findings? A decisive list of the top 10 business buzzwords that Illinois employees dislike their managers using. Here are the top ten phrases that managers might be wise to retire, complete with all-too-common uses that grate on the nerves: #1 ‘Act Your Wage’: At the top of the list is this cheeky nugget, which is supposed to remind you to stick to tasks that match your pay grade. It might sound cute at first, but it can also box you into your current role and dim your shine if you’re trying to climb that career ladder and add more value. #2 ‘Balls in the Air’: This term paints multitasking as akin to a juggler keeping several balls in the air simultaneously.

While it’s meant to sound manageable and even fun, it often underplays the real stress and complexity involved in keeping multiple projects moving smoothly. #3 ‘Change Agent’: A Change Agent drives transformation within an organization. While the role is crucial, highlighting it can sometimes feel like it diminishes the collaborative efforts of other team members, potentially causing frustration when the focus is on a single “hero.” #4 ‘Effective Accelerationism’: This tech-sounding term is all about speeding things up to see results faster. While it screams ‘innovation’, it often just ends up sounding

This emphasis can make employees feel that thoughtful, quality contributions are undervalued. #10 ‘Spidey Sense’: Borrowed from Spider-Man, this term in tenth place is used to describe a gut feeling that something might be off. High cocoa prices challenge Illinois chocolatiers

By PHYLLIS COULTER FarmWeek Amy Wertheim never thought she would be affected by pirates and drought in Africa, but the third-generation, central Illinois chocolatier is experiencing just that. Luckily, her business also includes growing specialty crops and selling meals online, because the high prices of chocolate ingredients are tough to manage these days.

“Chocolate pricing has increased by more than 300% in the last three months,” she said, attributing the hike mostly to droughts in Africa. The Ivory Coast and Ghana region, which is in extended drought, produces more than 70% of the world’s cocoa, the owner of RGW Candy Co. in Atlanta noted.

Cocoa futures have more than doubled since the start of the year because of the drought in the main cocoa-producing areas. At the same time, ships traveling from Africa are being attacked and held for ransom. Usually, the owners get their ships and contents back but must pay large ransoms, she said.

That also boosts the price of chocolate.

“Droughts and pirates are making my life miserable right now,” the Logan County businesswoman said.

On May 13, the price increases slammed Wertheim when she needed to buy chocolate for a large order for May 16.

“I normally pay $329 to order 100 pounds and it was $727 or close to $800 with shipping,” she said.

“I didn’t have a choice,” she said of buying the ingredients but added that she did get a discount from the supplier which has served the family well for 75 years. She was able to buy the chocolate and complete the big order for her customer who agreed to a higher price up front.

“We really try to hold the line,” Wertheim said.

She still uses 1908 recipes and makes everything from scratch with minimal ingredients and no preservatives, which customers tell her they are willing to pay for because they like the flavor.

Wertheim said the past few months with rising prices have been “very upsetting”. She hadn’t felt this way since 2017 when her father died and the business fell on her shoulders.

“I’ve been around the business since I was 18 months old,” she said of the responsibility she feels for the “family legacy”.

RGW Candy Company will temporarily have minimal chocolate at the store, but she will be back in full force in September for caramel apple season.

While the chocolate takes a backburner, she will concentrate on her herb and spice farm and Wertheim’s Gardens which are the most profitable part of her operation now. For years, chocolate was the moneymaker with her farm business supplementing it.

She uses her garden-grown ingredients to make dishes including baked spaghetti, enchiladas and homemade pasta sauces, which she sells through Market Wagon to be delivered to homes in central Illinois and the St. Louis area.

Wertheim said being a Harvest Host is also a profit-adder.

Through the program, RVers stay at the farms, vineyards and other businesses, and in return they shop at their businesses.

For another central Illinois chocolate store, the timing is right for their annual summer shutdown. “We are unique in that we close for the summer,” said Zach Meyer owner of Minonk Chocolate Company.

Summer closings have been a tradition since his family took over the business. The original chocolate business started in Minonk in 1915; Meyer’s mother and aunt ran it from 1995 to 2021.

The Minonk shop will reopen the Tuesday after Labor Day, said Meyer, who expects prices will remain high.

“We will take it as it comes,” he said.

I have reviewed your homes position in the local market. The internet isn’t “cutting it” because your home is priced $20,000 higher than it should be! The internet will

not sell overpriced homes and neither will a full page ad in the Chicago Tribune! Buyers are knowledgeable. The only thing buyers will see with all your ads is “overpriced home.”

The market value of your home has nothing to do with ‘outside the box’ real estate marketing. Marketing is all about visibility and attracting the right kind of buyer. With an effective marketing plan, your home listing will find its way in front of thousands of well-qualified buyers. Good marketing will display all the best qualities and pictures of your home and encourage potential buyers to look further into the listing and to schedule a viewing. But good marketing does not change the value of your home. If your home is overpriced the best marketing in the world won’t sell it.

For the first time ever, the Illinois Secretary of State’s office is dedicating DMV services exclusively for teen drivers every Saturday during the summer at select facilities, Secretary Alexi Giannoulias announced today.

The Teen Summer DMV initiative, which includes opening 12 additional DMVs on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 1 to Aug. 31, will cater exclusively to helping teens get their driver’s licenses or permits quickly and conveniently. The effort is part of Giannoulias’ modernization plan to create efficiencies and reduce wait times.

“Teen-only DMVs provide working parents, who can’t take time off work during the week to shuttle their child to a DMV, a convenient weekend option where they can make an appointment without waiting,” Giannoulias said. “Getting your first driver’s license is an exciting milestone, and we want to ensure the experience is as easy as possible for Illinois teens and their parents.”

To raise awareness, Giannoulias is promoting the Teen Summer DMV program through social media, letters to parents and their teens who will be eligible for a driver’s license this summer and community engagement with high schools.

During teen service hours, the office will also have a selfie station for newly licensed drivers and will provide important information on data protection, such as making sure the driver’s license number and address are covered when posting to social media. The locations offering teen hours will use geolocation features on social media to provide a filter specific to the program.

State law requires teen drivers and a parent or guardian to visit a DMV in person to complete testing and identity verification prior to receiving their first driver’s license. Illinois DMVs experience an influx of customers during the summer months, especially among teen drivers who make the switch from an instruction permit to a driver’s license.

Parents and teens can call (800) 252-8980 to schedule an appointment at any of the 12 DMV locations.

The designated teen service hours will make an additional 1,000 appointments per week available to accommodate the nearly 9,000 current permit holders who become eligible for a license this summer. The Teen DMVs will also

free up appointments during the week for those needing in-person DMV visits.

Teen service hours will be offered at the following locations: Addison; Aurora; Bethalto, Belvidere, Bridgeview, Chicago West; Des Plaines; Elgin; Joliet; Lake Zurich; Plano; St. Charles.

The DMV facilities were chosen based on data revealing the highest percentage of teen drivers and the state’s busiest facilities. In addition to the Teen Summer DMVs, 15 other DMVs operate on Saturdays, including two of the largest facilities in the state located on the North and South sides of Chicago. Teens are welcome to make appointments at those facilities on Saturdays as well.

Teen drivers interested in obtaining their first license will be scheduled for 10-minute appointments if they have already completed the required behind-the-wheel driving tests through their high school or commercial driving facility. If they need to complete a driving test at a DMV, they will be scheduled for a 30-minute appointment. Teens who need driving permits can also schedule an appointment to take a written test.

Any unfilled appointments during teen service hours will become available to the general public at 7 a.m.

During teen service hours, information will be provided geared toward new drivers, including details about the restrictions related to a graduated driver’s license (the license for those under 18 years of age), the dangers of distracted driving and how to become an organ donor.

Along with a big smile for their driver’s license photos, new drivers will need to bring the following to the DMV: • Their logbook for their instructional permit.

• Their blue and white road test waiver form from their high school if they have one.

• Their birth certificate.

• Their physical Social Security Card.

• Two proofs of address forms, such as school transcripts or their parent’s driver’s license or ID card.

While teen drivers are not required to hold a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, they are encouraged to apply for one during these designated teen hours. A list of REAL ID requirements is available at realid.ilsos.gov.

Biden-Harris AdministrationAnnounces Additional $7.7 Billion in Approved Student Debt Relief for 160,000 Borrowers The Biden-Harris Administration announced today the approval of $7.7 billion in additional student loan debt relief for 160,500 borrowers. These discharges are for three categories of borrowers: those receiving Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF); those who signed up for President Biden’s Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan and who are eligible for its shortened time-to-forgiveness benefit; and those receiving forgiveness on income-driven repayment (IDR) as a result of fixes made by the Administration. This action comes as more than 8 million borrowers have been helped by the SAVE Plan. That includes 4.6 million with a $0 monthly payment.

Today’s announcement brings the total loan forgiveness approved by the Biden-Harris Administration to $167 billion for 4.75 million Americans. Thanks to this Administration’s efforts more than one out of every 10 federal student loan borrowers has now been approved for some debt relief. This action builds on President Biden and his Administration’s efforts to provide debt relief to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible.

“The Biden-Harris Administration remains persistent about our efforts to bring student debt relief to millions more across the country, and this announcement proves it,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “One out of every 10 federal student loan borrowers approved for debt relief means one out of every 10 borrowers now has financial breathing room and a burden lifted.”

Recently, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) also announced an update on the timing of the payment count adjustment. This administrative fix ensures borrowers get credit for progress borrowers made toward IDR forgiveness and PSLF. Borrowers who would benefit from consolidating now have until June 30, 2024 to apply to consolidate. Borrowers can find out more about the payment count adjustment here.

The debt relief announced today is broken down into the following categories: • $5.2 billion for 66,900 borrowers through fixes to PSLF: The Administration has now approved $68 billion in forgiveness for more than 942,000 borrowers through PSLF. • $613 million for 54,300 borrowers through the SAVE Plan: This relief will go to borrowers enrolled in the SAVE

Plan who had smaller loans for their postsecondary studies.

Borrowers can receive relief after at least 10 years of payments if they originally borrowed $12,000 or less. Each additional $1,000 in borrowing adds 12 more months until forgiveness.

All borrowers on the SAVE Plan receive forgiveness after 20 or 25 years, depending on whether they have loans for graduate school. The benefit is based upon the original principal balance of all Federal loans borrowed to attend school, not what a borrower currently owes or the amount of an individual loan. Today’s announcement brings total relief approved under the SAVE Plan to $5.5 billion for 414,000 borrowers.

• $1.9 billion for 39,200 borrowers through administrative adjustments to IDR payment counts. These adjustments have brought borrowers closer to forgiveness and address longstanding concerns with the misuse of forbearance by loan servicers. Including today’s announcement, the Biden-Harris Administration has now approved $51.0 billion in IDR relief for more than 1 million borrowers.

“Another 160,000 borrowers and their families will get some much-needed relief thanks to the continued efforts the BidenHarris Administration to fix the broken student loan system,” said U.S. Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal. “We congratulate those borrowers on their due forgiveness and we will continue to work to deliver relief to others.”

As discussed in a recent report by the Council of Economic Advisers, the relief provided by these discharges and other actions taken by the Administration could boost short-term consumption and have positive effects on borrower mental health, financial security, and outcomes such as homeownership and entrepreneurship.

Borrowers have already begun receiving emails informing them of their approvals. Their relief will be processed in the following weeks.

New Plans to Deliver Debt Relief to Tens of Millions of Americans In April, the Biden-Harris Administration released initial details of a new set of plans that would provide student debt relief for tens of millions of borrowers across the country. The

plans would bring the total number of borrowers eligible for student debt relief to over 30 million, including borrowers who have already been approved for debt cancellation by the BidenHarris Administration over the past three years. The plans for new student debt relief regulations announced by President Biden are the next step in a regulatory process that began last summer to provide debt relief to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible under the Higher Education Act. The proposals would permit the following types of waivers: • Waiving accrued and capitalized interest for millions of borrowers; • Automatically discharging debt for borrowers not enrolled in but otherwise eligible for loan forgiveness under the SAVE Plan, closed school discharge, or other forgiveness programs; • Eliminating student debt for borrowers who entered repayment 20 or more years ago; • Helping borrowers who enrolled in low-financial-value programs or institutions; and • Assisting borrowers who experience hardship in paying.

Public comments on the first set of plans closed on May 17. The Department is in the process of carefully reviewing comments.

Our goal is to publish a final rule that results in delivering relief this fall.

A Strong Track Record of Borrower Assistance The Biden-Harris Administration has taken many steps to reduce the burden of student debt and ensure that student loans are not a barrier to opportunity for students and families. The Administration secured a $900 increase to the maximum Pell Grant -- the largest increase in a decade -- and finalized new rules to protect borrowers from career programs that leave graduates with unaffordable debts or insufficient earnings.

Beyond the relief under IDR, the SAVE Plan, and PSLF, the Biden-Harris Administration has also approved: $28.7 billion for more than 1.6 million borrowers who were cheated by their schools, saw their institutions precipitously close, or are covered by related court settlements. $14.1 billion for more than 548,000 borrowers with a total and permanent disability.
