Law Day at South Suburban College:

A Resounding Success!

South Holland, IL — South Suburban College (SSC) celebrated Law Day on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, marking a significant milestone in fostering legal education and awareness within the community. The event drew an impressive turnout, with state and local law enforcement agencies, high school students from Bremen, Hillcrest, and Oak Forest, SSC legal studies students, and last but not least, SSC staff converging to partake in a day filled with immersive experiences and insightful discussions.

One of the highlights of the day was the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, First Division hearing oral arguments on a criminal case, presenting attendees with a rare opportunity to witness legal proceedings firsthand. The case was argued by representatives from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Office of the State Appellate Defender, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the experience.

ASA Andrew Yassan and AAD John Breffeilh graciously engaged in a stimulating Q&A session following the oral arguments, providing attendees with valuable insights into the legal profession. Justices Lavin, Pucinski, Coghlan, and Cobbs also remained for a Q&A session, offering further enlightenment on the intricacies of the judicial process.

The event featured a diverse range of activities designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of law enforcement and the legal system. A mock crime scene, meticulously arranged by the Illinois State Police, allowed students to immerse themselves in the investigative process and gain practical insights into forensic analysis. A training Forensic Investigator provided detailed explanations, ensuring that attendees could correlate their observations with real-world forensic practices.

“Master Sergeant, December Melville highlights the Illinois State Police’s ongoing commitment to educating and inspiring future generations through the immersive mock crime scene experience. Now in its second year, this initiative provides invaluable insight into the crucial work of Crime Scene Investigators (CSI), offering attendees a firsthand glimpse into the challenges and responsibilities faced in the field. By fostering understanding and appreciation for the complexities of forensic investigation, the Illinois State Police continues to shape the next generation of law enforcement

professionals.”

Throughout Law Day at SSC, participants were not only equipped with knowledge but also inspired by the dedication and expertise demonstrated by legal professionals and law enforcement agencies. The event served as a testament to SSC’s pivotal role in promoting legal literacy and fostering community engagement. The inclusion of a night session focusing on the seamless transition to four-year institutions underscored SSC’s commitment to facilitating academic and professional advancement.

As SSC looks forward to future endeavors in legal education and community outreach, Law Day stands as a shining example of the institution’s unwavering commitment to excellence and inclusivity.

Mayor Brandon Johnson Proclaims Salvation Army Week in Chicago

— In an effort to bring the citizens of Chicago together to address issues affecting their most vulnerable neighbors yearround, Mayor Brandon Johnson has issued a proclamation declaring May 13-19, 2024, as “Salvation Army Week in Chicago.” The proclamation recognizes the ongoing efforts of the staff and volunteers of the country’s largest nongovernmental provider of social services to help those in the community who are struggling.

“I, BRANDON JOHNSON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby proclaim May 13-19, 2024, to be SALVATION ARMY WEEK IN CHICAGO in recognition of the indelible contributions made by The Salvation Army and urge all residents to support this vital organization.”

Many people think of The Salvation Army’s bell ringers and Red Kettles during the holiday season, but few are aware of the organization’s role in serving those experiencing homelessness and the effects of poverty throughout the year. With community centers across the city, The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to provide help and hope to all Chicagoans through services including feeding, financial assistance, substance abuse recovery programs, afterschool programs, emergency shelter for children and families, and more.

“At a time when more than 450,000 Chicagoans live in

poverty, we believe that by working together, we can positively impact the lives of those in need by providing service, love, and hope,” said Major Caleb Senn, The Salvation Army Chicago Area Commander. “During this special week, we ask all Chicagoans to come together in service to make a significant difference in the lives of others.”

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the first National Salvation Army Week as a reminder to Americans to give freely of themselves. In his speech, Eisenhower said: “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

The Salvation Army is grateful for the recognition by Mayor Johnson and the people of the City of Chicago. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our communities. To learn how to volunteer or make a financial gift that will stay in your local community, please visit SalArmyChicago.org.

GRADually Embark

Late spring starts the season for graduations on all educational levels: elementary, high school, and college. People dressed in various colored robes with square hats and draped with cords eagerly wait for their opportunity to walk across a stage to accept their diploma marks the end of an era and embarking on a new adventure. Years of hard work have accumulated to build up to this moment of success. It’s also a moment of transition. They transition from the prior life of learning, training, and preparation for their education to finally graduate from that stage to embark on the next phase of their life.

Graduation and transitioning to something new encompass not only the graduate but also for other people in their lives. It signifies a pivotal moment for everyone involved, leading to adjustments emotionally and mentally for parents, siblings, spouses, and friends.

For Parents…Graduation can evoke a mix of emotions like pride, excitement, nervousness, joy, jealousy, or emptiness. High school and college graduations are significant milestones as parents possibly become empty nesters, adjust to a quieter household, and not be the primary caregiver or protector of their child. The parents can take solace that their sacrifice, support, and equipping their child with skills, values, and resilience are now paying off as their child ventures into the world. Parents must embrace that this is also a new chapter in their lives. They need to embrace their newfound sense of freedom to rediscover and pursue their interests and hobbies.

For Siblings…Graduation can make siblings feel abandoned, excited and can involve a sense of responsibility. Siblings often look up to their graduating siblings with admiration and view them as role models to inspire them by their achievements and to follow in their footsteps. They may experience feeling envious or insecure, as more responsibility shifts to them and the need to grow in their new familial role. Graduation should serve as an opportunity for siblings to come together to support each

Real

other, grow in their love for one another, build a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other.

For Spouses…Graduation marks not just an individual achievement but a shared victory. Spouses prepare from day one to face challenges as a team through their shared bond. Spouses adapt mentally and emotionally to the graduate’s journey by supporting their partner with encouragement, understanding, sacrifices to balance work and school, and sometimes even financial support. Spouses mustn’t feel insignificant. The goal is for them as a couple to embrace the future with optimism and navigate their new adventures together. They should feel excited about the opportunities ahead and welcome the changes of the transition.

For Friends…Graduation brings a sense of excitement, sadness, and uncertainty. As friends, they have shared experiences and memories throughout their school years that served as support and encouragement. After graduation, the friendship embarks on navigating the uncertainty or difficulties in maintaining the relationship that was vital during their school years because of separate career paths or the challenges of distance. Sometimes, it’s hard to be excited or supportive of the success of others. Close friends need to try to maintain their bond, celebrate each other’s successes, and remain supportive and loving despite the inevitable changes or difficulties of distance.

Gradually embark with the graduate on their new adventures. Graduation is a momentous time for celebrating, loving, and standing together during this triumph. Rejoice in the graduate’s success with the same unwavering support and understanding to navigate the uncertainty of what lies ahead. It’s the end of a journey and the beginning of another time of growth. Congratulations to the Class of 2024! Y? Why Not!

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: I am venting. We are looking to purchase a home that needs some work, but it’s amazing how many homes are past the “needs work” and into the “disgusting” category. Bad odors, torn carpeting and walls with holes…the list goes on. We can’t find anything. Any suggestions?

Answer: Let’s review this…. You are looking for a good deal, but you don’t want a home with odors, or a home that needs some work? I don’t think the distressed property market is for you. If you want a good deal on a home, you are going to have to find something that needs a lot of work. A home with odors, torn carpeting and holes in the walls and more. If the home doesn’t need work, the homeowner can sell it at fair market value which is usually always higher than what they would get in an investors market.

Finding a super deal in real estate is not easy. The overwhelming majority of homes sold would be categorized in the “fair deal” category. Fair, because Realtors price the homes correctly and appraisers ensure the buyer is not overpaying for a home in an

effort to protect the lender. Fair would also mean that both the buyer and seller are satisfied with the sale terms.

If you are looking for a deal, then you need to look at homes that need work, do the math, and hope that you can make a profit by selling it for more than what you paid for it plus expenses to fix it up and sell. There is tough competition in the investor market. Everyone wants to make money selling homes. Sometimes you can get a deal if you are a cash buyer and find a seller who does not want to deal with a buyers financing and wants a quick close.

Discuss your ideas with a Real estate Broker to see if this is really something you want and can do.

The Biblical book of 1 Samuel opens with a story of answered prayer.

Hannah desperately wanted a child. She was married to a man named Elkanah, who had children by another woman. But Hannah wanted her own.

So she prayed. She prayed and prayed. She visited the Lord’s house with her husband and prayed there. The Bible tells us other women of her household mocked her for her lack of children. Hannah would weep and refuse food. 1 Samuel 1:7 says, “So it went on, year by year.”

The Bible tells us of one occasion when Hannah prayed in the Lord’s house. 1 Samuel 1:10 says, “She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.” A priest notices her prayer. It’s so fervent and emotional that he thinks she’s drunk at first. She throws herself before the Lord’s mercy and promises that any future son He might give her will be devoted to Him.

Then comes a beautiful verse. After Hannah returns home, 1 Samuel 1:19 says, “The Lord remembered her.” After years of desperation, the Lord has not forgotten Hannah.

Hannah conceives and gives birth to a son (Samuel) who would be instrumental in God’s plans. In Chapter 2, Hannah praises God for His goodness and love.

I think an appropriate title for this small section of the Bible would be “The Lord Hears.”

The Lord never forgot Hannah. In His perfect timing, He answered her prayer.

He does the same today. He may not always answer our prayers in the way we want, but He hears them, and his plans for us are perfect — even if not fully understandable. Your desperate prayers are not just empty whisperings in the dark. They are heard by the Lord of the universe — and He loves you.

Bring your prayers to God. He will hear you.

Medicare and Hospital Goofed

On May 7, 2024, I wrote a letter to a hospital in northwest Indiana for one of our clients. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client and others, here is the letter that I sent to the hospital.

Dear Representative,

Our client sent a bill from your firm to our firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $2,138.30 on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on 06/07/23 through 06/23/23.

I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. Here is what it reported to me.

It never received a Medicare Explanation of Benefits from Medicare on this claim. It got your bill information on July 26, 2023. On September 8 and December 14 of 2023, it requested that your firm send the Medicare EOB information that you got from Medicare so that it could check and pay on this claim. YOUR FIRM NEVER RESPONDED TO GIVE THE INSURANCE COMPANY THE

INFORMATION THAT IT REQUESTED.

The only reason that you have not yet received the balance on this claim is because neither Medicare nor your firm ever bothered to send complete claim information to the secondary insurer.

If you still want to be paid, please send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB information to the insurer at the address shown here.

All the help that I am giving this client is without charge. This insurance agency gives this kind of help to all clients at no charge. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. Wilcox has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered at book stores or online.

UnchainedTV’s New Show ‘Kale Krew’ Treats Viewers to a Culinary Tour of Chicago’s Vibrant Vegan Scene

CHICAGO — UnchainedTV’s adventurous and often hilarious new series, “Kale Krew,” is hosted by Nemanja Golubovic, CEO and founder of the famous vegan restaurant chain Kale My Name, and social media influencer Tamika Price, founder of Plant Based Tamika. Between their shared sense of humor and their genius at ordering mouthwatering vegan dishes, this series is a whole lot of fun.

“Kale Krew” takes viewers on an entertaining journey through Chicago’s vibrant vegan food scene, highlighting the city’s most innovative and popular plant-based restaurants. Featured brands will include Kale My Name, Nemanja’s comfort food restaurant chain; Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat, which is a celebrated alt-protein used in seasonal cuisine; Spirit Elephant restaurant; and Alice and Friends Vegan Kitchen.

The series kicks off with a tour of Chicago’s famed XMarket Food Hall, which is the home of six extraordinary vegan eateries, including Kale My Name, 2D Restaurant, El Hongo Magico, Chicago Not Dog, Veganiano and Bloom Sushi Counter as well as a full-service bar and plant-based supermarket.

Originating from Montenegro, Nemanja Golubovic’s diverse experiences have shaped his eclectic menu at Kale My Name, reflecting a commitment to health, compassion and sustainability. Nemanja also serves as a judge on “The Blox,” airing on Amazon Prime.

After coming across a blog post discussing how a plantbased diet could alleviate asthma symptoms and watching the documentary “What The Health,” Tamika Price made the switch to a plant-based lifestyle. She noticed significant

improvements to her health and quality of life and was inspired to showcase the abundance and joys of plant-based living to her community, quickly garnering a following of over 100K. Her work in both fashion and food has been featured on “The Rachael Ray Show,” WGN, NBC, ABC and nationally aired American Express commercials, among other outlets.

“Kale Krew” shows that the plant-based lifestyle is not solely a New York/LA/London/Berlin phenomenon. The vegan lifestyle is spreading across America, into the heartland, and to the rest of the world. The tired mantra, “What do you eat?” is being replaced by, “Why didn’t I try vegan sooner?” And the best is yet to come. Stay tuned for more fabulous food adventures from the Kale Krew! EKPENYONG

Professor Boniface Esong Ekpenyong was born on February 2, 1939 in Okopedi Okobo, Nigeria. He was born to the union of Esong and Andem-Bassey. Over the years he became the esteemed head of his family, with many relatives looking to him for leadership and guidance in a wide range of affairs.

Both his father (Esong) and paternal grandmother (Andem), valued education. Esong would put his nephew (Dr. Andem) through school, and the latter became the first medical doctor in Okopedi Okobo. Looking to Dr. Andem’s career as inspiration, Boniface would earn a bachelor’s degree in Physics at the University of Nsukka in Nigeria. In the 1960s he traveled to the United States to further his education at the University of Chicago (U of C), where he earned a master’s degree in Radar Meteorology. It was on the campus of U of C, at International House, where he met Sharon, and in 1969 they were married. He built a career in higher education, working as a professor of Physics, Astronomy, and Physical Sciences at Malcolm X College and Chicago State University, among other institutions. His appreciation for the value of education was passed on to his children, Andem, Karen, and John.

Boniface was very religious and active in his parish, Jesus Shepherd of Soulsformerly known as Our Lady of Knock. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Eucharistic Minister, and an active member of the parish council. He also loved sports, especially tennis. He was a big football fan, his favorite team being Manchester United. He also loved gardening and spent hours in his backyard. Sharon loved the pineapples he grew at their home in Nigeria, which she used to make delicious pies (a family favorite). In the last ten years, advanced Sudoku became his favorite pastime. He had many sisters (Bibiana, Mercy, Grace, Beatrice, Victoria, Catherine, and Immaculata) and even more brothers (John, Patrick, Emmanuel, Sylvanus, Benedict, Archibong, Livinus and Alfred).

Boniface is survived by his wife, Sharon Ekpenyong and children Andem Ekpenyong, Karen Shifflett and John Esong Ekpenyong; and sonin-law James Shifflett. He was a beloved husband and father, esteemed brother and uncle, dedicated educator, and keeper of the Catholic faith. He will be dearly missed.

To Drive a Deeper Understanding of Cancer Disparities in IL, American Cancer Society Launches Largest U.S. Pop. Study of Black Women

[ Chicago, IL ] May 7, 2024 – Today, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is proud to announce the launch of the VOICES of Black Women® study in Illinois. VOICES is the largest behavioral and environmental focused population study of cancer risk and outcomes in Black women in the United States. Designed to better understand the multi-level drivers of cancer incidence, mortality and resilience within this demographic, the long-term study will gather valuable data from Black women between the ages of 25 and 55 from diverse backgrounds and income levels who have not been diagnosed with cancer. The organization aims to enroll over 100,000 Black women across 20 states, including Illinois and D.C. where, according to the U.S. Census, more than 90 percent of Black women in the U.S. reside.

A global leader in cancer research, the American Cancer Society has a 70-year history of funding and conducting some of the world’s largest and most impactful population cohort studies to understand how cancer develops in populations, identify cancer risk factors, and improve survivorship and outcomes after diagnosis. Through these studies, over 2.5 million research participants have contributed to landmark discoveries in cancer science like the linkage of cigarette smoking to lung cancer, obesity to the risk of early death, and red and processed meat intake to higher risk of colon cancer. These and other discoveries have contributed to a 33 percent age adjusted reduction in cancer mortality rates since rates peaked in 1991.

Despite significant strides in cancer research, Black women continue to have the highest death rate and the shortest survival of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S. for most cancers.

Black women are 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women and are twice as likely to die if they are younger than 50.

In Illinois, a total of 78,200 state residents overall will be diagnosed with cancer with 23,280 deaths in 2024.

Led by American Cancer Society researchers, Dr. Alpa Patel and Dr. Lauren McCullough, the VOICES of Black Women® study will partner with communities of Black women and cross-

Harris advances measure to increase transparency for homeowners

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Napoleon Harris, III advanced a measure on Tuesday to increase transparency of homeowner insurance policy coverage.

“When you choose a homeowner insurance policy you should have a full picture of what the policy covers,” said Harris (D-Harvey). “This legislation empowers homeowners to make educated financial decisions about their homeowner insurance policies.”

House Bill 5357 would require an insurer to disclose whether a homeowner’s insurance policy covers damage from a sewer backup or overflow from a sump pump when issuing or quoting a homeowner’s policy. Further, the measure would require insurance companies to offer the policyholder an opportunity to purchase this coverage if the policy does not already include it.

This legislation was filed in response to flooding in the Berwyn and Cicero area where many residents discovered that their homeowner insurance policies did not cover damages from a sewer backup or overflow from a sump pump.

According to the Illinois Independent Insurance Agents, a busted sewer line can cost up to $30,000 to repair and replace.

“Increasing transparency in homeowner insurance policies is a good first step in ensuring residents are equipped with the knowledge to make decisions that are in the best interests of their families,” said Harris.

House Bill 5357 passed the Senate’s Insurance Committee on Tuesday with bipartisan support.

disciplinary experts in Black women’s health to listen and better understand the unique, diverse lived experiences that may affect the risk of developing or dying from cancer. Results will be used to improve the overall health of Black women for generations to come.

“VOICES of Black Women® represents a crucial step towards achieving health equity in a population that is long overdue,” said Patel, co-principal investigator of the study and senior vice president of population science at the American Cancer Society. “The data we’ve uncovered through previous population studies has been critical in reducing the unacceptably high burden of cancer, but that reduction has sadly not been equal. By centering Black women’s voices and experiences, we can dig deeper in uncovering the unique challenges and barriers contributing to cancer disparities and develop tailored interventions to mitigate them.”

Recruitment for the study began in October 2023 with a pilot launch in Atlanta, GA and Hampton Roads, VA. Eligible participants must identify as Black, be assigned female at birth or self-identify as women, not have a history of cancer (except basal or squamous skin cancer), and be between the ages of 25 and 55.

Enrolled participants will provide informed consent and, over the span of 30 years, answer behavioral, environmental, and lived experience questions through periodic short surveys delivered via a secure online portal. No medication, clinical testing, treatment, or lifestyle changes are part of the study.

The American Cancer Society believes everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat and survive cancer. Acting on this belief and fulfilling the organization’s vision of ending cancer as we know it for everyone requires focus on eliminating deeply rooted barriers that have caused long-standing inequities in cancer outcomes. The VOICES of Black Women® study represents a significant stride towards achieving this goal and underscores the organization’s unwavering commitment to health equity and social justice.

For more information about the VOICES of Black Women® study and how to participate, please visit voices.cancer.org.

Should estate plans be equal… or fair?

When you’re creating your estate plan, your biggest priority may be taking care of your family — your spouse, grown children, grandchildren, and other loved ones. And as you think of where you want your assets to go, you also may be thinking about how to be fair — but is that the same as treating everyone equally?

In estate planning, “equal” doesn’t always mean “fair.” Let’s consider some factors that can help explain the difference: Need – It’s highly unlikely that the individuals you want to include in your estate plan — especially your adult children – have the same family and financial situations. For example, you could have one child who is extremely successful and has no children of their own, while another child earns much less income and supports three children. Clearly, your two adult children have vastly different financial needs — so, you need to consider whether you want to treat them equally or fairly. If you decide you want to treat them fairly, you may want to divide your assets in a way that provides more help Abilities – You may well have some assets that you believe are more suitable for one child over another. This can be especially true if you are planning on passing on a family business. If you know that one child is the most capable of running the business or has been primarily involved in the business, then you may want to give that child control as a next-generation owner. Yet, this may not seem fair to another child, who might also express interest in the business, so you may want to look for ways to provide this child with enough assets to help make the overall inheritance more equal.

Practicality – In some instances, you might think you can meet both the “fair” and “equal” criteria. Suppose, for instance, that you have a cabin or other vacation

home that you think two of your children could share. In theory, this joint ownership might sound good, but in practical terms, it could cause problems. Are both children equally willing and capable of paying taxes and upkeep on the cabin or vacation home? What if one child wants to sell their share?

And then, there’s the question of who gets to use the property at various times of the year. All these issues should be resolvable, but they can also cause great stress within the family.

There’s no simple formula for solving the fair-versus-equal dilemma. But keep this in mind: Communicating your wishes to your loved ones while you are drawing up your estate plan can help reduce confusion — and hopefully lead to fewer hard feelings — when you are no longer around. By their nature, fairness and equality issues related to estate plans can trigger a range of emotions, and addressing these feelings beforehand can help provide a great service for your loved ones. You might also find that some objectivity can be valuable. That’s why, when creating your estate plan, you may benefit by working with a team of professionals, including your legal, financial and tax advisors.

When developing your estate plan, you might well strive for equality and fairness but above all, you want to get things right. And careful planning, open communication and appropriate guidance can help go a long way toward this goal.

Learn How To Visualize and Actualize Success on a Personal and Professional Level

“This is a must read for all to pursue a life that resonates with your genuine happiness while dismantling the obstacles that have been holding you back.”

— Jack Canfield, coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series and The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

Portland, ME — Author Elizabeth HamiltonGuarino, master life coach and founder of The Best Ever You Network, has long espoused that people must redefine success for their authentic selves — a one-size-fits-all concept is not only outdated but also unworkable. Success is so much more than data or the dollars in a bank account.

“True success is reflected in the smiles that brighten our faces and the peace that settles in our hearts,” Hamilton-Guarino said. “It’s the gratitude we seek in all things and the intention and actions being our very best in each moment.”

In her newest book, The Success Guidebook, readers will find inspiration, motivation, and a pathway to live their best, most fulfilling lives.

“Your breakthrough to your best success happens when reality intersects with infinite possibilities,” she said. “When this happens in our real lives, the stars align. It’s time to redefine success for yourself personally and to pursue the life you want by also giving thought and attention comprehensively to various areas of your life, such as health or relationships, which suffer when attention is paid in such a focused manner to another area in the pursuit of ‘success.’”

Hamilton-Guarino also believes that traditional measurements for success are unrealistic and largely unattainable.

“This disconnect has created multiple issues on many fronts. Success isn’t one-size-fits- all. We need a new way forward: a new definition of success that is individualized,” she explained. “Imagine taking an express route to excellence and success by learning the art of comprehensive and well-rounded success. Here you have your best awareness for excelling in all areas of your life at a world class level.”

By implementing Hamilton-Guarino’s unique Ten Factors of Success — the behaviors consistently exhibited by people who stand out and behave with world-class excellence —

readers will learn how to finally overcome the stubborn obstacles that have stood in their way and harness the power to move forward with clarity, a renewed purpose and the personalized confidence to build a life of bold, brave and infinite possibilities

Included are profiles of 20 people who exemplify these principles, including actress Rhys Olivia Cote; Georgetown University’s Head Baseball Coach, Edwin Thompson; Founder/CEO of Wedo.ai, Indiana Gregg; and Olympian Mitch Gaylord.

“Here’s the secret: You don’t need to be on a national or international platform to be worldclass,” Hamilton-Guarino added. “You can have it right in your own home, to be and feel successful in each and every moment of your life. This book will help you learn how to tap into world-class behaviors and get the results you desire — at last.”

About the Author

In 2008, Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino closed the door to her office to think about her life. When she opened it, she walked through, leaving behind an almost two-decade career in the financial services industry in order to open the doors for the Best Ever You Network. Today, Best Ever You is a multimedia brand and platform with millions of fans and followers around the world. She is a tireless champion of others and believes in the need for the individual light within to raise the collaborative power of us and we.

Hamilton-Guarino is also a writer, master coach and speaker focused on change, success, gratitude and helping people be their best. She is the author of the bestselling and five-time award-winning book, The Change Guidebook: How to Align Your Heart, Truths, and Energy to Find Success in All Areas of Your Life. Her work has been featured in places like Good Housekeeping, U.S. News and World Report, Forbes and more. Her popular “4-4-4 Newsletter” is sent out each week to thousands of subscribers.

She and her husband, Peter, have been married for more than 25 years and have four adult sons, three rescued cats and two dogs. They can often be found in their gardens, in the pool, raking leaves or, depending on the season, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Renovations, repairs ramping up at state fairgrounds

Construction crews and Illinois State Fair staff are working hard to finish up renovations to the grounds as the countdown to the 2024 fair continues.

The Illinois State Fair hosts a plethora of construction projects, including phase two renovations to the Illinois State Fair Coliseum and restoration to the Multi-Purpose Arena.

“Spring means construction here on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. And we’re still in the middle of a $58 million economic investment in the fairgrounds to address years of deferred maintenance,” said Rebecca Clark, Illinois State Fair manager.

After completing the Coliseum roof overhaul in 2019, the crew now tackles a $16.8 million transformation.

Phase two renovations focus on new electrical, heating and cooling, plumbing and sound systems. The project also addresses new seating and adds an elevator, increasing the building’s accessibility.

“We started our renovations to the Coliseum around fall of ‘22 but had to stop the summer of ‘23 for the fair and all of the horse shows,” said Rick Newbold of Egizii Electric. “We’re in full swing now and are hoping for no more delays so we can be done come fair time.”

According to Clark, crews have also been working on road improvement projects throughout the fairgrounds. This is routine maintenance to prepare for the wear-and-tear of

the upcoming show season.

Additionally, she said various fair buildings are undergoing roofing projects.

“We also just finished putting the finishing touches on the Multi-Purpose Arena,” she said. The arena received an $8.6 million facelift. Repair projects focused on repairing sidewalks, walls, steps and electrical systems, as well as readjusting the tension structure, installing a new canopy, and rebuilding the retaining walls around the facility.

Clark said this year the Multi-Purpose Arena will be used and will have plenty of events, including a rodeo. Clark said the fair is utilizing a new company this year that will host nine rodeo event categories.

“It’s a jam-packed show, great for those junior exhibitors who are going to be visiting with us during the State Fair,” she said.

More than 10,000 visitors can be seated at the Multi-Purpose Arena and tickets will go on sale as more events are announced.

“I’m really excited about all of the things that are happening here,” Clark told FarmWeek. “I think our fair family is going to really see that excitement when the fair rolls around this August.”
