SAVED WHEATFIELD CLIENT $1,527.05

WOODROW WILCOX

On April 21, 2021, I got a message to call a client in Wheatfield, Indiana. I returned the call and got the good news that $1,527.05 in bills went away because of my help to this client. The problem was that Medicare failed to send the essential information about two claims to the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company. When that was corrected and the insurance company and Medicare paid their portions of the two bills, the bills to our client disappeared. You may wonder how often Medicare fails to send essential information to Medicare supplement insurance companies. It happens thousands of times per day. If a senior citizen does not get help from someone who knows how to spot and correct mistakes in Medicare related medical bills, the senior citizen gets hounded to pay the bill.

For over 18 years, I have worked to protect the clients of this insurance agency from problems in the Medicare system that would cost them money if no one helped them. Our agency has built a reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients to help them with these problems. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an agency that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be purchased at bookstores or online.

TO BE ADDED, EMAIL ERICAW@MYSHOPPER.BIZ BETHEL CHURCH

RICHARD ZEKVELD Warning! Today’s column may not strike you as spiritual. When’s the last time you laughed so hard that you could hardly breathe? Or when’s the last time you enjoyed some good, hearty laughter with family or friends? I’m not talking about cynical or mean-spirited laughter. I’m talking about honest-to-goodness, innocent laughter that lifts spirits. Maybe you say, “I’ve got nothing to laugh about.” All the more reason to laugh. You’ve heard the old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” It’s true. Do you have people in your life who know how to make you laugh? They have a great sense of humor and know how and when to use their humor in up-lifting, life-giving ways. They know when (and when not) to inject a dose of funny into the heaviness or tension. The comic relief allows all to catch their breath. Maybe you are one of those people. Know that this is a tremendous gift from God! Maybe it’s been so long since you laughed, you don’t know where to begin. Why not recall some funny memories that will make you smile? Or even guffaw? Share them with someone who will enjoy them too. Watch or read something mindlessly, ridiculously hilarious. With others, if possible. Put on a chicken suit and look in the mirror. Gather with others to play humorous board games. And don’t forget to laugh at yourself. Above all, when you anchor your faith in Jesus, rest assured that laughter will have the last word in your life. When he returns to right all wrongs, we will say, “Our mouths [are] filled with laughter, and our tongues with songs of joy” (Psalm 126:2a). That forecast frees us to laugh now. Maybe today’s column was spiritual after all! Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My sister and I just purchased a townhouse with only her on the loan and title for qualifying purposes. I now want to add myself onto the title. How do we go about accomplishing this? And how does this affect tax benefits and write-offs? I definitely want to take advantage of the write-offs as well. Answer: You didn’t buy a townhouse -- your sister did. You’re not an owner, because you’re not on the title. This is not a minor point. To now put your name on the title means that ownership has changed -- which means also that the property has been “sold,” thus transfer taxes may be due and the current lender may call the loan. Before going further, speak with an experienced lender to see how you and your sister might jointly qualify for a new loan. An attorney can provide advice regarding title issues. Question: What’s the best waiting period before selling a home? Answer: There’s no rule. If you need to move, you need to move. However, it usually makes sense to own for at least two years so you can exclude up to $500,000 (if married) or $250,000

(if single) from capital gains taxes. Question: If a buyer signed an offer with a housing inspection as a condition, and the buyer conducted the inspection himself and decided to break the offer, does the seller have the right to see the inspection report before signing the release? Answer: What inspection report? Why would buyers write an inspection report for themselves? What does the contract language say about an inspection? There are all kinds of alternative inspection arrangements which can be found in sale agreements. Determining what either party must do depends on what the agreement actually says. Contact an attorney to review the contract. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? South Shore Arts’ Teen Arts Board: Anti-Racism Mural

7

In September of 2018, the first ever meeting of the South Shore Arts Teen Arts Board took place. At that time, the group did not have a name or a vision, but it was this first cohort of high school students who were tasked with making those decisions and founding the youth-led network of high school students interested in pursuing opportunities in the arts field. The group participated in brainstorming and visioning sessions to determine their direction and eventually named it the Teen Arts Board. At that time, they unanimously agreed that collaborating on a public art project would be a top priority. The Teen Arts Board began working towards that goal, without yet knowing what the theme of their project would be or what medium would be the best fit for their project. In May of 2020, the message for their public art project became clear. They decided that the project would convey an anti-racism message and that a mural would be the best medium for expressing that message. The group began researching other mural projects, learning about local mural artists, sketching and discussing their ideas. Eventually, the Teen Arts Board was granted funding from the Legacy Foundation that would allow them to begin their work. Local artist, Ish Muhammad, was chosen as the collaborating artist for the project with the Teen Arts Board. Ish began meeting with the group virtually to discuss the process of creating a mural and to brainstorm ideas for their specific project. Over the course of two months, the group worked together with Ish to sketch ideas and to bring those ideas together in a cohesive composition for their painting. Ish guided them through the process, offering advice from his many years of experience, but ensured that the content of the mural was completely the voice of the members of the Teen Arts Board. The group participated in every phase of the project, from planning, to designing, preparing surfaces, detail painting, and sealing the finished work. Now that the mural is complete, it is scheduled to be displayed at high schools in Hammond, Lowell, Merrillville, and in the downtown Hammond area. The members of the Teen Arts Board have begun the work of talking with teachers and school administrators to find exhibition space for this 8-foot by 16-foot work of art. Over the next year, the mural will be a traveling art piece, with the goal of displaying it in as many communities as possible, and eventually landing at a long-term home in Hammond. The display locations for the mural will be shared on South Shore Arts’ Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feed. This project was made possible with generous support from the Legacy Foundation and with the expertise of artist Ish Muhammad. South Shore Arts is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming lives and strengthening communities through the arts. The Teen Arts Board is a free program for high school students interested in pursuing opportunities in the arts field. For more information about the Teen Arts Board, visit https://www.southshoreartsonline.org/teen-art-board, or contact the South Shore Arts Director of Education, Summer Scharringhausen, at summer@southshoreartsonline.org or 219836-1839 ext. 103.

5 Ways The Pandemic Could Change Your Child’s Education... The shift to remote learning during the pandemic caused angst for parents, but it also led to unexpected benefits that they may find hard to let go of as their children return to school. While pandemic-era schooling has been difficult, parents’ have come to appreciate the unexpected benefits of distance learning, says Emily Greene (www.emilygreene.com), the author of School, Disrupted: Rediscovering the Joy of Learning in a Pandemic-Stricken World. Some benefits are so positive, she says, that parents are reluctant to slide back into the prepandemic status quo of in-person schooling without making some improvements. “The dialogue has shifted as parents and students reflect on the last year and think carefully about what they hope to carry forward to improve the school experience,” Greene says. Greene, herself a working mother of three children, says the pandemic jostled parents into thinking differently about “traditional schooling.” “Distance learning in a pandemic has changed our expectations,” Greene says, “and parents want to apply what we’ve collectively learned to

help our children thrive as they return to school.” Here are five benefits that Greene says parents hope to carry forward: More free time. Before the pandemic, many families’ lives were overscheduled, Greene says. The lockdown helped families reconnect with the joys of free time, playtime, and downtime. This took the stress off children overwhelmed with homework, extracurriculars, and overly structured schedules and opened the door for natural curiosity to flourish. Scientists say free time is essential to the developing brain and is tied to curiosity, creativity, and imagination. “Looking back on the past year, many parents notice an increase in their children’s natural curiosity, creative expression, and imaginative thinking,” Greene says. “By pushing through the boredom that can come with free time, children learn to use their imaginations, think inventively, solve their problems, and express themselves.” More time outside. During lockdowns, people suffering from cabin fever longed to leave their houses, but indoor public places were problematic. So, families connected with the

outdoors in new ways, such as walking, biking, or simply eating lunch outside. “Parents do not want their children to lose their newfound levels of outdoor activity. They understand now that one short recess per day is not enough,” Greene says. Before the pandemic, she notes, many children spent less time outdoors than prison inmates. One survey of 12,000 parents in 10 countries found that half of children ages 5 to 12 were outside less than an hour each day. In comparison, inmates at U.S. maximum-security prisons are guaranteed at least two hours of daily outside time. Less standardization, and more personalization. A traditional in-person classroom follows a standardized schedule, leaving little room for independent work or passion projects. However, distance learning offered gaps in the day for children to explore their passions and interests. Many parents saw their children expressing new interests, exploring and deepening existing hobbies, and making and building things. “Between the middle of March and the middle of April 2020, Google searches for ‘How to make’

doubled, as did searches for ‘DIY,’ “Greene says. “In a world that abruptly became more virtual than we were accustomed to, children wanted to be hands-on in new ways.” More connection with what their children are learning. With students working remotely, parents were privy to an up-close view of what their children are learning. “While at first many parents felt overwhelmed with supervising distance learning, they eventually came to value this connection,” Greene says. “Now, many parents have a deeper level of engagement that they do not want to lose.” In some cases, she adds, parents were impressed with what their children were learning. In other cases, parents were surprised to discover the details of their children’s school experience and began asking questions they never asked before, like “Is this relevant?” Or “How is this helping my child?” She predicts this new level of parent engagement will trigger longoverdue updates to the standardized curriculum, as well as more options for children. An increased focus on balance and wellbeing. Because of the disruption the pandemic caused,

Here’s a LongLasting Mother’s Day Gift

Open to residents 65 and older.

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Mother’s Day has almost arrived. As an adult, you can fully appreciate all your mother has done for you, so, on this occasion, you may be happy to give Mom flowers, candy, jewelry or something similar. But Mother’s Day is here and then it’s gone. Is there a longer-term gift that can make a real difference in your mother’s life? Actually, there is – the gift of knowledge for her financial future. Specifically, there are two key areas in which you may be able to provide valuable help to your mother: long-term care and estate planning. But don’t panic – you don’t have to be an expert in either one of these subjects. You can, however, steer Mom – and possibly your other parent, too, if one is in the picture – in the right direction. Let’s take a quick look at both these topics. First, consider long-term care. If your mother is in good health, you may not have thought much about whether she would eventually need an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health aide. But the odds aren’t necessarily in her favor: About 70 percent of adults who reach 65 will eventually require some type of long-term service and support, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. And this type of care is expensive: The annual median cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $100,000, and it’s nearly $55,000 per year for the full-time services of a home health aide, according to a survey by the insurance company Genworth. Unless your mother has accumulated a great deal of financial resources, she likely won’t be able to pay these costs out of pocket without jeopardizing her financial independence. Furthermore, Medicare typically pays only a small portion of these expenses. To help your mother deal with this potential financial threat, you might want to suggest she meet with a financial professional, who can explore possible strategies and products designed to address long-term care. And the sooner, the better, because these solutions will become more expensive and challenging the older your mother gets. The second topic you may want to bring up with your mother is her estate plan. Has she drafted a will? Has she safeguarded her wishes by creating the necessary legal documents? These could include a durable power of attorney for finances, which allows her to name someone to manage her financial affairs if she becomes incapacitated, and a durable power of attorney for health care, which allows someone to make medical decisions for her if she is able to do so herself. Having her estate plans in order can help protect your mother’s finances and ensure her legacy is honored – which is almost certainly an outcome she would keenly desire. So, if your mother doesn’t already have a comprehensive estate plan, encourage her to see a legal professional to start the process. Helping your mother protect herself from the catastrophic costs of long-term care and the chaos of an inadequate estate plan may not sound like a typical Mother’s Day offering, but your actions can help keep Mom in a good place in life –and that’s a pretty valuable gift. ...For The Better Greene says, children have been “wrung through the wringer,” with social, emotional, and mental impact. “Parents want balance and wellbeing at the forefront,” she says. “That means less menial homework, less time wasted on irrelevant standardized tests, and more focus on curiosity, creativity, and joy in the classroom.” For many parents, this means holding onto distance learning as an option and giving students the flexibility to attend in-person or distance learning to support wellbeing. “Now, as children are returning to school, we don’t want to be forced to choose between in-person learning or distance learning,” Greene says. “Both should be options. Learning should be blended.”

“When society lives through a disruption, it rarely returns to the way it was before,” Greene says. “The next few years will be an inspiring time in education as parents, students, and teachers begin to apply what we’ve learned.”

Bishop Noll’s Science Olympiad Team members get top spots at virtual state competition The Bishop Noll Science Olympiad Team overcame several obstacles to work toward its second straight bid to state. Three teams broke into the top 15 in the state, which took place virtually. Junior Jacqueline Garcia and sophomore Rebecca Carlos of the Wright Stuff team placed 16th in the state, just one spot away from the top 15. Abbie Kawalec in Disease Detective placed 15th; Mariana Gonzalez and Jesus Olages placed 13th in Ornithology, and Captain Abbie Kawalec cracked the top 10 in Experimental Design. Other team members include Victoria Piskol, Luke Baczkowski, Itzury Becerra, Mariana Gonzalez, Alessandra Lopez, Maria Quiroga and Emilano Soto. The team qualified for State last year, but the competition was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year, members were ready to take on another year of Science Olympiad virtually. They practiced after school and during lunch in the STREAM Lab to prepare for individual events. On any given day, the lab had students studying together, while other teammates prepared notecards and others worked on making musical instruments and bottle rockets. Sophomore Victoria Piskol has been on the team for the past three years and competed in Designer Genes, Water Quality, GeoLogic Mapping and Dynamic Planet. She enjoys all the different aspects of science whether it be biological or environmental. “It felt great to compete in the state competition,” she said. “Knowing the hard work that everyone put into the events and seeing success was amazing … everyone did great and I know we will have continued success next season.” In addition to Science Olympiad, Piskol is involved in Spell Bowl, volleyball, track, Biology

Club and Environmental Club. Sophomore team member Rebecca Carlos competed in Write Stuff, Write It Do It, Anatomy and Physiology and helped her teammates with Gravity Vehicle. She joined Science Olympiad her freshman year because she likes how science makes her think outside the box and find different ways to solve a problem. “I enjoy that we could choose which events we want to do and how welcoming and understanding everyone is.” In addition to the team, she is a member of National Honor Society, Marching Band and Concert Band. She is on the tennis team and involved in Drama Club, Chess Club, Women’s Empowerment Club, Crochet Club, Environmental Club and the National Honor Society Junior Jacqueline García participated in Science Olympiad in 4th, 10th and 11th grade. This year, she competed in Wright Stuff and Write It, Do It. For Wright Stuff, she built an airplane with partner Rebecca Carlos. It flew by attaching the propeller with a rubber band. They placed 16th in state. “We did very well in this event. It felt amazing to be able to compete in state. It was a little different from last year, but it was still really fun.” She loves Science Olympiad because it is fun and she learns so much from the group. She is also on the tennis team and cross country team. She is a member of NHS, Student Ambassadors, Drama Club, Art Club, Yearbook, Biology Club, Women’s Empowerment Club, Choir, Academic Super Bowl, Academic Spell bowl, Speech, Workshop Club and Chess Club. She is also a student athletic trainer, track manager and Campus Ministry Intern.

Bishop Noll plans to make second virtual fundraiser bigger than ever Get in on the bidding fun with Bishop Noll Institute’s Big Reinvent 2, a virtual event and auction, taking place May 15, 2021. More than 60 items will be up for bid at Bishop Noll’s largest single day fundraiser of the year. During this special evening, Bishop Noll alumni and friends around the country can help raise essential funds for the Principal’s Scholarship Fund. Up for grabs this year is a Sanibel Island, Florida, vacation rental. Other items include dining experiences, golfing packages, specialty libations, sports memorabilia, gift cards and Bishop Noll themed prizes. Participating in the event is easy, COVID safe and can be done from the comfort of home. Visit the auction site - bigevent100.givesmart. com - to preview auction items with photos

and descriptions. After registering for a free account, site users can “watch” their favorite items to receive alerts and bidding updates. Items are added often and bidding will open May 6 and end May 15 during the event’s livestream. Once bidding opens, the site allows users to set up maximum bids if desired.s. “When we had to turn this traditional event into a virtual one last year, we had so much to learn,” said Mary Ellen O’Neill, the school’s director of advancement. “Our team quickly pivoted to put on a spectacular online fundraiser that far exceeded its goal and our expectations. We look forward to making the Big Reinvent 2 even bigger and better this year with more auction items and some fun surprises. If people want to help, we have

Repair or “As-Is”? MIKE BUDER Last week, I listed a home that looked terrific, but the central air had come to the end of its functional life. Oh it powered on with its loud grinding motor, but it’s cooling days were obviously over. I called out two of the area’s HVAC experts to take a look. I received two competing bids to replace the central air compressor. The contractor bids where enough money to make the seller think about not replacing the unit and just selling the home with the AC “as-is”, with a disclosure that the unit was dubious. Now, that is option one. Doing the work and replacing the AC unit will cost the seller about $2,800. But my concern was that buyers, once they realized they would have to repair or replace the unit, would deduct a lot more than that from their offer. Over the years, I’ve noticed that most buyers over-estimate what it will cost to fix anything that needs to be repaired or replaced in a home that they are considering buying. I will often use the example of the bedroom doorknob that put a hole in the drywall. The seller knows that to repair the wall will take

$10 in material and an hour on a Saturday and that hole is history. But, when the buyer sees that hole “it’s a $500 hole”. Selling a home “as-is” has the advantage of relieving the seller of the hassle of having to fix stuff and if the seller lives far away the hassle factor can be substantial. But there is a cost. In addition to the buyer overestimating the expense of doing repairs, there is another consideration. Buyers don’t seem to mind spending money on things they can seelike remodeling a kitchen or buying new furniture. But doing repairs to systems or fixing structure issues might just send them running to find another place needing less work. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friendrequest Mike Buder. Western Illinois University Application Fee Waiver Through May 9 Western Illinois University is waiving the $30 application fee for undergraduate students, who apply to WIU (wiu.edu/apply) through Sunday, May 9. Graduating high school seniors and transfer students, dual enrollment students and those applying through the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program, who apply for admission to Western, will have the application fee waived during the fee waiver month beginning at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, April 21 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, May 9. “We love it that we are still able to provide opportunities for this fall to students who may be deciding on a college choice,” said Doug Freed, director of Undergraduate Admissions and Enrollment Services. “We are particularly pleased that our full scholarship program will be available to students who are applying now.” There are still openings in the fall class for freshmen and transfer students. Opportunities for student scholarships are still available and will continue until the Fall 2021 semester begins in August. The Western Commitment Scholarship automatically awards $3,000-8,000 each year to incoming freshmen with excellent academic ability and achievement in high school. In addition, Western has revised the Transfer Commitment Scholarship, increasing the award to $2,500 and making the scholarship available for part-time students. For students from Adams, Brown, Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Knox, McDonough,

Schuyler or Warren counties, the Local Leatherneck Housing Scholarship provides a one-time $3,000 award toward an on-campus residence hall room to incoming full-time freshmen from the western Illinois region. New freshmen who are the children and grandchildren of WIU graduates automatically qualify for the $1,500 WIU Legacy Scholarship, and those new students from the Chicago and St. Louis regions have specific scholarships in place, as well. Western’s Leatherneck Visitor Scholarship gives incoming freshmen and transfers a one-time $1,000 award if they attend a virtual WIU Undergraduate Admissions event for either the Macomb or Quad Cities campus. See more at wiu.edu/visit. More information on WIU scholarships (automatic and donor designated applicationbased scholarships) can be found at wiu. edu/scholarships. Prospective freshmen and transfers interested in being considered for the automatic scholarships available at WIU can apply at wiu.edu/apply. Western will continue its test optional admissions policy for students applying for the 2021-2022 academic year and beyond. Students are automatically admitted to WIU if they have a 2.75 or higher high school GPA (on a 4.0 scale). To apply, visit wiu.edu/apply. For more information about WIU scholarships, visit wiu. edu/scholarships.

several sponsorship opportunities available and we are still looking for donations of additional auction items.” Auction item donations and sponsorships/ cash gifts can be made online at bigevent100. givesmart.com and by contacting the Advancement Department at advancement@ bishopnoll.org or (219) 932-9058. The proceeds from the fundraiser play a vital role in providing scholarships to students, making a private Catholic education affordable to many Northwest Indiana and south suburban families. Last year, due to the grips of the COVID-19 virus and the inability to convene an onsite gathering, organizers had to postpone the Big Event from its regular date in April and transitioned to a fully virtual event in

May. The Big Reinvent, as it was branded, raised more than $70,000 thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends around the country. Another way to help is by purchasing tickets to the Warrior Winnings Raffle, which will be drawn the evening of the event. Prizes of $5,000, $1,000 and $500 will be awarded. Tickets are $10 each, or three for $20, or 10 for $50. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the main office of Bishop Noll, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond, or via a mail in order form. Call (219) 932-9058 or email advancement@ bishopnoll.org to arrange for tickets. (Indiana Raffle License #000575) Due to Indiana gaming regulations, raffle tickets cannot be sold online or purchased using a credit card.

The Art Of Compliance: Doing What’s Right, Not Just What’s Required The rest of society got a taste of what corporate compliance officers go through when the pandemic forced restrictions and requirements on the entire population. Suddenly, people were told to wear masks, social distance, and wash their hands more regularly and thoroughly than ever before. Plenty of people didn’t like that, trying to dodge the new rules or openly defying them, even as clerks, store managers, police officers, and health professionals firmly reminded them they needed to comply. In somewhat the same way, compliance officers for a business may appear to act as the resident scolds, reminding people when their plans or actions come into conflict with state or federal rules and regulations that govern their industries. It doesn’t always go over well. “People often resist compliance because they don’t like to be told what to do,” says Steve Vincze, president and CEO of Trestle Compliance (www.trestlecompliance.com) and author of the upcoming book Winning with Compliance: Strategies to Make Commercial Compliance Your Competitive Advantage. “But compliance is about doing what’s right, not just what’s required.” Companies can face hefty fines when they fail to comply with rules that govern their activities, whether the non-compliance was inadvertent or intentional. A couple of examples: In 2020, Capital One was fined $80 million for a data breach that exposed customers’ personal information the previous year. The Cheesecake Factory came under scrutiny and reached a $125,000 settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over the SEC’s allegation that the company misled investors about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its business. So,whether you are the CEO of the company or a compliance officer, how do you make sure people are doing what they need to do? Vincze offers a few tips: Listen. If you want people to listen to you and embrace your advice, you need first to

listen to them, to understand their fears, their challenges, and their motivations, Vincze says. “You need to be able to answer the ‘why’ behind the what,’ “ he says. “Why do I need to comply? What’s in it for me if I do? When it comes to compliance, the key message is that you have to listen well, hear what they are saying, and then mirror back to that person that you understood them.” Inspire and motivate. Logic alone doesn’t always win out, which may be frustrating for some leaders, but that’s when the art and science of compliance and of leadership must come to the fore, Vincze says. “You need to touch both hearts and minds to inspire and motivate people,” he says. “The trick is to get people to want to comply. Depending on who you are speaking to, you may be able to reach them rationally and sensibly. But sometimes you may need to go deeper and find out what motivates them. For example, if you are dealing with young people fresh out of college, you might show them how compliance connects to a broader purpose, that it’s not just about following some rule but about helping people in some way.” Be tough. Eventually, though, you may need to get tough. “You have to draw limits,” Vincze says. “You have to discipline people if they don’t comply and put themselves and others in jeopardy. You have to know where to draw the line, but you have to do it consistently and fairly, and you must communicate the limits very clearly.” “At the end of the day, effective compliance boils down to understanding people as human beings, and using that understanding as an effective leader to inspire the desired behavior,” Vincze says. “You have to connect compliance and each individual’s role to a cause greater than any one person, a cause greater than themselves. Connect with their passion and you will inspire their compliance. Fundamentally, most people are good and want to do what is right. Apply that understanding to win them over to start winning with compliance.”

Tiffany Henyard Creates History in Dolton page

Village Trustee Tiffany Henyard has made history while becoming the first female Mayor in the Village of Dolton. In a victory speech Tuesday night that was streamed on Facebook Live, Henyard held her young daughter, whom she said she wanted to see grow up “with a safe backyard; with a safe neighborhood where she can go and play around on her bike; and not have to worry about it.” “Change has come to Dolton. Today, you have voted for a fresh representative. Today, you have voted for accountability. Today, you have voted for transparency. Today, you have voted to improve the police department. Today, you have voted for better stewards over our tax dollars. Today, you have voted for honesty and integrity, and today, you have voted for inclusion,” she said in her speech. At a postelection party, complete with “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” playing on the speakers, Henyard walked up to the podium thankful for the opportunity to step up after being a trustee in the village. “I am so grateful, honored and blessed that the voters came out and voted for me to be the next mayor of Dolton,” she said. “I do not take being the first female mayor of Dolton lightly. It is an awesome task bestowed on me. We went through the storm and we made it through.” “My main goal is to be the glue for my community,” she said. “I want to work with and bring together the park district, school board and library board. Right now, my community is divided. “I want to show them this board has compassion and transparency and I want to give them that from Day 1.” Before she voted on Tuesday, Henyard showed appreciation for the people who worked on her campaign in a press release. “Our campaign was able to articulate our platform message to voters, and we were inspired to hear from the residents of their concerns for our beloved town,” she remarked.
