SSC’s Student Organization for Latino Empowerment and Success (SOLES) Attends Illinois LAtino Council on Higher Education (ILACHE) Conference On Friday, April 14, South Suburban College’s (SSC) Student Organization for Latino Empowerment & Success (SOLES) attended the Illinois LAtino Council on Higher Education (ILACHE) Conference hosted at Malcolm X College. SSC students participated in various workshops, including Pilsen’s Festival de Mujeres 1979: Using a new digital exhibit to explore la riqueza of 1970s; Cafecito sin Azucar: Undocumented Professional Collective Wisdom at Work; Crotchet and Sustainability: What I learned from my mother; and Self-Advocacy in Higher Education.

“My favorite workshop was self-advocacy advocating for yourself as a Latina/o/e. It was very informative on how to advocate for your well-being,” said Ana Ezparza, SSC Student and Latino Center Office Assistant. SOLES President Gloria Ruiz added, “I learned how to set healthy boundaries.” In addition, Lizbeth Atenco, SOLES Secretary, stated the My Skin, My Weapon workshop was her favorite as it provided tips on surviving graduate school as a Latina.

The ILACHE Conference hosted two speakers for the morning and afternoon plenary during breakfast and lunch. Dr. Nancy “Rusty” Barcelo, nationally recognized for her work in diversity and inclusion and former President of Northern New Mexico College, spoke about her journey in higher education in the late 60s as a Chicana during the morning plenary. SSC Barber College student Miguel Ramos mentioned he “really enjoyed the morning speaker, Rusty.”

Author and Latinx Activist Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez presented a portion of her book, For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts, during the afternoon plenary. “It was great to hear their amazing stories and learn from Dr. Barcelo and Prica Mojica Rodriguez,” stated Lizbeth Atenco, SOLES Secretary.

Students of the South Suburban College SOLES Group Attended the Illinois LAtino Council on Higher Education Conference _______________________________ Impact of Commercialized American food in Mexico. “It was exciting meeting new people and seeing all the research,” said SSC student and SOLES member Gabriela “Gaby” Chaparro.

Overall, the ILACHE Conference provided SSC students professional and personal growth opportunities. Kimberly Rodriguez, an SSC student, stated, “There was trust between all of us as a community without inequalities,” referencing the Latinx community. The conference concluded with a networking event in which various undergraduate, graduate, and higher education professionals participated. Miguel Ramos concluded, “It was inspiring to be around people from all walks of life who want to make a positive impact for all Latino communities.”

Sand Ridge Audubon Society Local Nature Photo Book Presentation Friday and Bird Hike Saturday The monthly meeting of the The Sand Ridge Audubon Society will be held at Sand Ridge Nature Center, 15891 Paxton Avenue, South Holland, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 5th. The Sand Ridge Audubon Society is an environmental organization dedicated to conservation of birds and their habitats, as well as promoting other nature-related causes and activities.

A presentation given by local graphic designer/photographer Alex Ross shares the story of the culmination of his first book. This locally-focused coffee table book, “Between Home and the Highland Rookery,” features more than 100 species of birds, as well as other wildlife from some of the Calumet Region’s hot spots, focusing on the Cline Avenue marsh. After being awarded a grant in late March of 2022, the book quickly came together. It has sold more than 200 copies since its release in December 2022. Between planning, designing, and last minute additions, the 4th generation Highland resident will reflect on the challenges the project presented. Alex will also introduce a few simple photo editing tips for beginners to improve images that don’t come out as expected, but still have detail to expose.

The following day, the Sand Ridge Audubon Society and the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project will sponsor a Bird Hike that will also feature a walk ‘n talk about the history of the Underground Railroad on Chicago’s south side.

Participants will learn about fascinating local stories of the Underground Railroad while observing a wide variety of native birds as well as migratory species that visit our area each spring.

Saved Valpo Client $2,266

WOODROW WILCOX On April 24, 2023, I got a phone call from a client in Valparaiso whom I had helped with a wrongful medical bill. She reported that she phoned the medical firm and learned that her bill for $2,266 no longer existed.

On the previous February 9, 2023, I had written to the medical firm and specifically told it that it could not bill our client $2,266 because Medicare ruled that in the Medicare Summary Notice which is a report of Medicare’s ruling on the claims. I cited to the medical firm where they could find that information in the Medicare Explanation of Benefits that the medical firm received.

The client and I worked together to get the bill and the Medicare Summary Notice to let me compare the two. That was how I discovered that Medicare ruled that the medical firm could not bill our client $2,266.

My letter to the medical firm either prompted it to cancel the bill or to refile the

claim and correct any mistakes that it made on the first filing of the claim. I don’t care which happened. I was glad that I was able to help the client with my knowledge and experience fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system for over 20 years. Our client was really glad that the bill was erased.

Some “did-you-knows” about estate plans SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’ve done any estate planning, or even if you’re just familiar with it, you probably know the basics — that is, a comprehensive estate plan can help you pass on assets to your family while also achieving other goals, such as designating someone to take care of your affairs if you become unable to do so. But you may not know about some other estate-planning issues that could prove important in your life: • Power of attorney for students – Children heading off to college may be considered legal adults in many states.

Consequently, you, as a parent, may not have any control over medical treatment if your child faces a sudden, serious illness or is involved in an accident.

Instead, a doctor who doesn’t know your child or your family may decide on a course of action of which you might not approve. To help prevent this, you may want to have your college student sign a medical power of attorney form, which will allow you to make decisions on your child’s behalf if doctors don’t think your child can make those choices.

You might also want to combine the medical power of attorney with an advance health care directive or living will, which lets you specify actions you do or don’t want to happen. In any case, consult with your legal advisor before taking any of these steps.

• Community property versus common law – Not all states treat married couples’ possessions equally. If you live in a community property state, the property you acquire during your marriage is generally considered to be owned in equal halves by each spouse, with some exceptions. But if you live in a common law state, the property you obtain while you’re married is not automatically owned by both spouses.

In these states, if you buy some property, you own it, unless you decide to put it in

the name of yourself and your spouse.

This doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that your spouse has no rights, because common law states typically have rules that guard surviving spouses from being disinherited. But here’s the key point: If you move from a community property state to a common law state, or vice versa, you might not want to assume that your and your spouse’s property ownership situations will remain the same. Consequently, if you do move, you may want to consult an estateplanning attorney in your new state to determine where you stand.

• Pet trusts – You always strive to take good care of your pets. But what might happen to them if you become incapacitated in some way? Unless you have a close family member or friend who’s willing to take over care for your pet, you might want to consider setting up a pet trust, which can take effect either during your lifetime or after you pass away. A trustee typically will make payments to the caregiver you’ve designated for your pet, with payments continuing for the pet’s lifetime or a set number of years. Again, an estateplanning attorney can help you with this arrangement.

Estate planning certainly involves the bigpicture issue of leaving a legacy to the next generation. But the issues we’ve discussed can also be meaningful to you, so you’ll want to address them properly.

Girls on the Run NW Indiana to host “Breathe & Believe” 5K Celebration Weekend in May Griffith, IN- The Girls on the Run Northwest Indiana 5K is set for a two-day 5K celebratory weekend.

The theme,“Breathe & Believe”, is inspired by the Girls on the Run commitment to a world where all girls can activate their limitless potential and be free to boldly pursue their dreams. The first 5K of the celebration weekend will take place at Highland High School on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The second 5K will take place at the Valparaiso Family YMCA on Sunday, May 14, 2023. For both dates, the pre-5K festival will begin at 8am (CST) and 5Ks will begin at 10am.

Registration for adults (18 and up) is $30 and youth (17 and under) is $20.

The Cities Summit of the Americas is a U.S. governmentled effort to convene city, state and municipal leaders from throughout the Western Hemisphere to focus on shared challenges and solutions. Pappas is to participate in a panel discussion with five mayors from North and SouthAmerican cities on Thursday, April 27,

titled: “Digital tools for improving cities’ revenue and public service delivery.”

Pappas, whose office collects and distributes $16 billion in property taxes yearly, is to explain how she used technological innovation to increase efficiency and reduce the number of government workers in her office by more than 75% since being elected in 1998.

“Digital transformation was the magic that allowed me to make my office efficient and transparent,” Pappas said. “I’ve hosted officials from more than 100 countries in my office and they need magic, too. They want to see how we do things in Cook County.”

The Cities Summit, a localized version of the Summit of the Americas, runs from April 26 – 28. Approximately 250 U.S. and international mayors and more than 3,500 delegates will attend.

Pappas has traveled the globe touting the digital advancements in her office. In 2021 she spoke to forums in Spain and in the Dominican Republic.

We come to the final scene of Luke’s Gospel. Jesus led his disciples to the Mount of Olives. He blessed them. As he blessed them, he began to lift off, steadily rising into the air until he disappeared from their sight, hidden by a cloud (Luke 24:51; see Acts 1:9-11).

He left them! He had just given them the astronomical task of proclaiming to the world the breaking news of Jesus, along with a call to repent and believe in him for the forgiveness of sins. And, in the face of such a momentous challenge, he left them!

Had I been present, I might have pleaded, “But, Jesus!

Don’t leave now! We need you to direct this effort, here on the ground. People need to see and hear you in person. And just wait till technology gets going and you can livestream around the globe!”

But that’s not how they reacted. Luke tells us, “Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy” (Luke 24:52, ESV). They were happy when he left!

But why? They understood he was gone for their good.

The King of the Cosmos ascended to heaven’s oval office to direct God’s gospel liberation effort from there. From there, he can send his people all the resources they need as we call on him. There, he can intercede for us as our great high priest with the Father (Romans 8:33-34). From there, he could send his Holy Spirit to be his divine power and presence in us to purify and empower us for his purposes.

He is gone for our good. And yet, in his divinity and Holy Spirit, he is still with us, as he promised (Matthew 28:20b).

That’s why the disciples rejoiced. And we can too.

END OF AN ERA-PUCCI’S ON 100TH STREET CLOSED APRIL 30, 2023: The popular and iconic Italian restaurant that held sway on 100th Street and Ewing for many years closed last week. Owner Frank Pucci, his wife Ann and Geno and Carmella Pucci decided it was time to retire. Patrons from far and near visited the restaurant many times of the course of the years. Before that it had been in the Duke Delich family and served generations of locals. Speaking for myself who patronized Pucci’s at least once or twice a month—it will be missed. Frank may make some of his recipes available to the new owners. We shall see—but for those of us who will truly miss Pucci’s—our loss is bittersweet! ***

The buyer’s home inspection is a real pressure point in a real estate transaction. This is where deals can fall apart. Any positive steps taken by the seller to prepare will be well worth the time invested.

A buyer has made an offer on your home and you are now “UNDER CONTRACT”. The next phase of the process is the home inspection. The inspector works for the BUYER so be sure to make your home shine!

Here are eleven simple tips to help eliminate the number of inspection items: • If the property is vacant, make sure the utilities are ON (including the water).

• Take your pets out of the property for the inspection.

• Make sure all of your lights are functioning. This may be as simple as replacing a light bulb. Don’t let the inspector note that a light fixture is inoperable simply because the bulb is burned out.

• Repair or replace any broken items (which you’ve been meaning to get to). This can include door locks, windows, screens, etc.

• Test smoke detectors and make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed within 15 feet of all sleeping quarters.

• Clear the perimeter around your house so the foundation and drainage can be inspected without issue.

• Clean your furnace thoroughly. Replace the filter and scrub down the furnace inside and out. A shop

vac usually works great for removing the dust build up inside the furnace. Make it shine!

• Trim back all tree limbs from house. The inspector will be looking at the roof and the gutters. Make sure the tree limbs are cut back so this can be easily accessed.

• Make sure all components are accessible to the inspector. This includes the furnace, H20 Heater, A/C, crawl space, and attic.

• Make sure your appliances are ready to be run. If the washer and dryer are included in operation on these appliances. Also insure that the dishwasher is empty.

by Janice R Newman When was the last time you needed a Q-Tip? The ears allow us to hear if they are clear of the wax and build up to allow sound to transmit to our brain. When there is a buildup, it’s difficult to understand all of what someone is saying. Metaphorically, earwax represents selective hearing. It is our way of filtering what we hear. We selectively block what we don’t want to hear and allow the things that are pleasing and acceptable to us entrance, even if it’s not what we need or the truth. “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” Matt 13:9 (NIV).

Think back to being a teenager when an adult would attempt to deliver sound advice to you such as don’t leave your bike out, find new friends, or be responsible with money.

Did you use selective hearing then? Was your hearing based on the assumption that you knew more than the advisor, or you didn’t want to hear the truth?

Some people may be selective in what they choose to hear, particularly when it comes to advice or information that challenges their beliefs or comfort zones. This can also be true in the context of religious teachings or any other area of life. People don’t want to hear the truth if it contradicts or challenges their desires or personal preferences. The truth can sometimes be uncomfortable to hear, but it is essential to growth and development. The Bible teaches us to seek the truth and live in accordance with God’s will but sometimes we don’t like the truth. We don’t like it when a doctor tells us to lose weight or exercise more for our health, so why would we want to hear wisdom from the ultimate authority, God? Choosing to hear only what we want to hear can ultimately limit our understanding and prevent us from reaching our full potential. It is important to approach new information with an open mind and a willingness to learn, even if it may be difficult or uncomfortable at first.

Here are three ways you can determine if

the advice you hear is good and useful: • Consider the source. Before accepting advice, consider the source, their knowledge, and experience, along with whether they are reliable and trustworthy. Taking these factors into account can assist you in determining if the advice is likely to be helpful and relevant.

• Evaluate the content. Evaluate the content of the advice to determine if it is relevant and applicable to your situation and aligns with your values and goals. Determine if the advice is useful and applicable to your situation.

• Seek God’s perspective: Seek God on all given issues or problems. Selective hearing and biases toward our desires prevent us from leaning on our faith and trusting in God’s Word.

Get the metaphorical wax out of your ears and head so you can hear and heed the advice of the wise, the learned, and the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 4:24 (NIV) states “Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more.”

People may hear or filter what they want to hear for various reasons. One reason is to seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs, values, and desires. Another reason is it’s easier to hear things that are pleasing or affirming, rather than hearing difficult or challenging truths. For example, it may be easier to hear a message about prosperity or doing what you want, rather than hearing advice that challenges you to develop selfdiscipline or make sacrifices for the greater good.

It is wise to have ears that can hear good advice and then make the decision to take that advice to avoid potential pitfalls and mistakes. The Books Proverbs and Psalms are filled with advice, valuable insights, and clear perspectives on all issues. The biblical verses can provide sound advice to save us time, money, energy, and hardship. It is in our best interests to have open ears to have clear unfiltered hearing from a trusted source. Y?
