TO BE ADDED, EMAIL ERICAW@MYSHOPPER.BIZ BETHEL CHURCH

RICHARD ZEKVELD Justice is wrong made right. David Emil spent four years in Cook County Jail for something he didn’t do. Finally, a court declared him ‘not guilty,’ and David went home. Our legal system proclaims, “Innocent until proven guilty.” Sadly, David’s experience was “Guilty until proven innocent.” This should not happen. It’s a wrong crying out to be made right. How is David not consumed by bitterness? He says bitterness will do nothing for you. But there’s more. Like Joseph in Genesis 50:20, he knows that the sovereign plan of his faithful Father trumps sin and injustice. This is not cliché. He has lived it. David points us, in song, to God as the reason he is free inside and out. My life is in your hands. You’re the Master with the plan. Forgive me for my sins, Things I couldn’t understand. I go through ups and downs, Don’t know where you’re taking me… You’re so faithful – the way you love me, the way you guide me. Faithfully. The price you paid for us to be free. From birth you knew your purpose, yes you did. I’m so glad you love me. I will serve you forever and ever.* David’s story underscores two things: first, we need Jesus to right all that is wrong in us. This begins when we embrace God’s ‘not guilty’ verdict through repentance and faith in Christ. Second, our God will right all that is wrong in this fallen world. And use us in the process. David experienced God’s faithfulness through a South Holland ministry, Chicagoland Prison Outreach, and its Life-Learning Program. CPO is one of many ministries and organizations we can partner with to be God’s agents of gospel-centered mercy and justice. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are talking about putting our home up for sale. My husband has deer heads on the walls of our foyer and Family room. He says the animals are a reflection of our lifestyle and it is what makes our house a home. I say it shows we are proud of killing animals and would be offensive to buyers. What is your professional opinion? Answer: When it’s time to sell your home, you can invest a ton of time, energy and money into getting the place ready for sale. You might declutter, stage and even remodel the house to make it as appealing to buyers as possible. Sometimes, though, no amount of preparation can overcome something in the home that, rightly or wrongly, offends some buyers and gives them negative impressions of you and your house. Right or wrong, dead animals are going to offend many people. Remove the animal trophies and save them for your next home. Live animals can also be offensive. We showed a home that had live rabbits running around the house. The smell was terrible and the buyers walked straight out of the home. Another home had a large snake in a tank that was eating grasshoppers! Sellers---you are trying to

sell your home. Let common sense prevail! Flags and political posters can also be a problem. Freedom of speech is in our Constitution, but they can be offensive to buyers, so remove them until you move into your next home. Other offensive items to buyers could be locked rooms that are not accessible. Despite relaxed laws on Marijuana, these drugs are still federally illegal and their presence or evidence of use, including odors and paraphernalia can deter buyers. Some sellers don’t realize they’ve exposed too much information. In others, sellers want to make a statement, even if it’s at their own expense. We tell our seller clients to depersonalize a house. It is crucial to make your buyers feel as though they could make themselves at home, move in and be comfortable. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. On April 14, 2021, I researched two medical bills for a client from Munster, Indiana. She had bought a Medicare supplement insurance policy from a subsidiary of Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company through our insurance agency. Then, she got two medical bills. The two bills totaled over $1700. Our client wanted to know why her insurance company had not paid the medical bills. I researched the two bills. The reason that Mutual of Omaha had not paid the Medicare related medical bills is because MEDICARE NEVER SENT THE CLAIMS TO MUTUAL OF OMAHA. You can’t fault an insurance company for not paying a claim that Medicare never sent to it. This failure of Medicare to deliver claims information to insurance companies happens thousands of times per day around the country. Protecting our clients from the financial harm caused by the Medicare system’s failures has kept me busy and working for over 18 years. My work helped this insurance agency build a reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients. With some editing to protect the privacy of

our client in this matter, here is the letter that I sent to two medical billers in order to eliminate over $1700 of medical bills for our client. Dear Representative, Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $XXXXXX on Account Number XXXXXXX for service rendered on XX/XX/XXXX. I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. IT REPORTED THAT MEDICARE NEVER SENT THIS CLAIM TO IT. That is not the fault of our client, her insurance company, or your firm. IT IS THE FAULT OF MEDICARE. To fix this problem as fast as possible, please send the essential information about this claim directly to the secondary insurer. Thank you for your cooperation. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available at bookstores and online.

When we are overwhelmed with financial issues it is common to experience lack of sleep, anxiety, hopelessness, and exacerbating habits; we become compromised spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It is critical to take care of ourselves. Attention to self care filters into other areas of our lives; it impacts decision we make to get out of debt and stay out of debt. Self care is subjective; it differs from person to person but it is something we control which is a huge advantage at a time when so much seems out of control. Additionally self care can be unconventional, depending on our needs and resources. We cannot take on everything at once. Small steps such as reading something, picking one thing in our home that we have procrastinated on doing (cleaning, sorting, labeling, organizing, moving an object) and ACTUALLY doing it, or taking a different route to run the same errands are some ways to take care of ourselves. We “lean into the lack of structure” caused by distractions or disruptions to our lives due to our finances by adding a new structure or moving along with more flexibility. Nothing productive comes from turning

problems over and over in our minds hoping we see a different “angle”. That drives us to decide we need distractions and lots of them; more television, more games, more food, more drinks, and more cigarettes. Proverbs 31: 8-9 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” We are the needy who may not be able to speak for ourselves and there are those who are willing to speak up for us. CAP America has the resources to walk alongside us to help eliminate concerns with unmanageable debt or to get us out of unmanageable debt. There is a way to this goal; to hope and freedom that others have. A small self care step can simply be picking up the phone and making a call today. Financial Advice Column

Look at Your Financial Situation Holistically SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN What’s the biggest financial mistake you can make? Choosing the wrong investments? Waiting too long to save for retirement? Underestimating the costs of retirement? All these are reasonable answers, but the biggest mistake you might make is not looking at your financial picture holistically – that is, not bringing into the picture all the elements of yourself. Let’s consider some of them: Your views on helping your family – Your decisions about helping your family are clearly going to be a major part of your financial strategy – and this is true at virtually all stages of your life. When your children are young, you’ll need to decide if you’re going to put away money for their college education, and, if so, how much, and in what investment vehicles. When they’re young adults, you may also need to decide how much financial support you’re willing to provide for things such as the down payment on a new home. And when you’re drawing up your estate plans, you’ll need to consider how to distribute assets to your children, grandchildren or other family members. Your personal beliefs – As someone with civic, ethical and moral concerns, you want to positively affect the world around you. And that’s why you may feel compelled to make charitable gifts throughout your life and then make philanthropy part of your legacy. To accomplish these objectives, you’ll want to include gifting techniques in your financial strategy today and your estate plans for tomorrow. Of course, for the estate planning component, you’ll need to work with your tax and legal advisors. Your purpose in life when you retire – When you retire, you may be stepping off a career path, but you’re also entering a world of possibilities. How will you define, and live out, your new sense of purpose at this stage of your life? Do you seek to broaden your horizons by traveling around the world? Do you want to give back more to the community by volunteering? Can you spend more time pursuing the hobbies you enjoy? Each of these choices will carry different financial implications for how much you’ll need to accumulate for retirement and how much you will need to take out each year from your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). Your health – Your physical and mental health can play big roles in your financial plans and outlook. On the most basic level, the healthier you are, and the better you take care of yourself, the lower your health care bills will likely be during retirement, which will affect the amount you need to put away for health care. And you also may need to prepare for the costs of long-term care, which can be enormous – in fact, a private room in a nursing home can easily cost $100,000 per year, according to the insurance company Genworth. It can be challenging to weave all these elements into a single, unified vision, so you may want to get some help from a financial professional. But, in any case, be prepared to look at your situation holistically – because, when putting together a lifetime’s financial strategy, every part of your life matters. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Stop Stuffing MIKE BUDER Is your stuff keeping you from finding the home you want? Perhaps as we gain a little perspective in life or go through a few of life’s tragedies, we learn that the “stuff” we accumulate doesn’t have a lot of meaning. I’m not talking about family heirlooms or valuable collections I’m talking about stuff. The items stored in closets, in boxes under the bed, out in the garage or in extra storage facilities you are paying a monthly fee for. The kind of stuff that if you took a good hard look at you might realize isn’t all that important and could be keeping you from buying a great home.

Sometimes when we work with buyers we hear comments like “we need a dining room that will accommodate our three curio cabinets” or “the kitchen needs to have enough cabinets for 5 sets of dishes,” even though they have been out of sight in storage for 3 years. Instead of focusing on the great value of a home, the location, or the amenities you are focusing on where to put your stuff. Let’s take a step back and take a look at what you said you wanted in a home. You wanted an updated kitchen (check), a master bath with a whirlpool tub (check), a 2-car garage (check),

and you want it all close to shopping, transportation and schools (check). Notice what is missing from your wish list? It was room for all of those things that you have been hiding for years. I realize it’s a bit like Christmas to unpack all of those things that you have stored away for years but…you’ve actually lived without them so it is quite likely that you don’t really need them after all. I know this sounds harsh but I’m a tell you like it is kind of Realtor. In a real estate market where home prices have fluctuated by 30% to 40% and with interest rates still at reasonably low

levels you can’t let your stuff hold you back. Clean it out and be ready to write an offer on a home that has all the check marks in the right place. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, Email: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www. BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. SSC 2021 Commencement South Suburban College (SSC) will host its 93rd Commencement Ceremony on Facebook Live Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. SSC is committed to honoring the accomplishments of its Class of 2021 through a virtual platform that keeps health and safety a priority and eliminates potential health risks. Student recognitions, cap and gowns and commencement photos, and messages from several key stakeholders will be included in the program. Dr. Ngozi Ezike, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), will serve as the College’s 2021 Commencement Speaker. “We are honored to welcome Dr. Ngozi Ezike as our Keynote Speaker,” said Dr. Lynette Stokes, South Suburban College President. “Dr. Ezike is a trailblazer who has been a thoughtful leader for our State while navigating challenging issues. We look forward to her commencement message for our future leaders.” Dr. Ngozi Ezike is the first Black woman appointed to lead the IDPH, a 143-year old state agency. Dr. Ezike is a board-certified internist and pediatrician who previously worked for the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH), where she served for more than 15 years. She also was medical director at the

Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. Dr. Ezike is a nationally recognized expert in the area of healthcare within the juvenile detention and justice systems. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, she is a Certified Correctional Health Professional and Diplomate of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. Frank M. Zuccarelli will also provide his annual words of congratulations and advice to his future colleagues. “As an alumnus of South Suburban College and Chairman of the Board for over 40 years, Commencement is still my favorite occasion of the year. While I miss the opportunity to present diplomas in person to our graduates, I am proud that we are once again able to provide a fun and proper send-off, virtually. The Class of 2021 certainly deserves it!” This year, South Suburban College will award over 500 degrees and certificates to graduating students. SSC completed a successful virtual commencement in 2020 with over 20,000 views on social media. Follow SouthSuburbanCollege on Facebook, or visit ssc.edu for more information.
