Runaway Cow Vegan Ice Cream - from South Suburbs to the Southside

Long time Lansing and South Holland residents Alison Eichhorn and Aaron Gutierrez are opening an ice cream shop in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago. Eichhorn’s family owned the Dairy Queen on Torrence Ave in Lansing for over 50 years before selling the business in 2012. While the shop will serve many familiar favorites, the biggest difference is that all of the offerings are 100% vegan, that is, no products will contain animal products.

Despite being a vegetarian for most of her life, Eichhorn became lactose intolerant in the early 2000’s, which opened the door for her adopting a vegan lifestyle. Not content with never having something like a chocolate malt milkshake again, Alison always dreamed of opening something similar to the business she helped her family run for most of her young life, but have it entirely plant based. After years of looking, she, along with her partner Aaron Gutierrez, found the perfect space in Bridgeport on Chicago’s southside. A neighborhood where the two have resided for the past 16 years. Runaway Cow Vegan Ice Cream (608 W 31st St. Chicago, IL 60616) will open at the end of April 2024. With so many advancements in plant-based foods, Eichhorn says no one would notice a difference. “Many plant-based ice cream options are already out there, and you may not even know it!” Gutierrez adds, referring to many major league baseball stadiums moving to oatbased ice cream options, which is the same base for their ice cream as well. “It’s not just for vegans. It’s not just for lactose intolerant people. It’s for everyone!”

Runaway Cow is at the tail-end of a successful Kickstarter campaign which raised the business over $30,000 to help purchase their final large piece of equipment. They are ready to open, and can’t wait to see you!

Blue Island Mai Fest Expands in Third Year

BLUE ISLAND, IL – April 8, 2024 – The Blue Island Arts Alliance (BIAA) and Streetz Artz Alliance will hold Mai Fest 2024 Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, May 11, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., on Olde Western Avenue in Blue Island.

According to Joe Leamanczyk, the head of the BIAA, “Mai Fest is the signature annual event of the Alliance, designed to bring people together to have a good time in the spring and experience the great places the City of Blue Island has to offer. The name ‘Mai Fest’ honors the German heritage of Blue Island.”

Mai Fest is held the day before Mother’s Day and offers a nice outing for moms, or the opportunity to buy one-of-a-kind gifts for them.

In its third year, Mai Fest is evolving and expanding from an arts and craft fair into a true street festival.

Leamanczyk said changes are being made in direct response to requests from previous years’ attendees.

“We really heard the feedback from last year, and made improvements that people asked for, like more seating and food vendors,” said Leamanczyk. “We’ll also have more activities for children. The Blue Island Public Library will be there, and an artist with a public art project that children can participate in.”

Olde Western Avenue will be closed to automobile traffic from 134th Street north to Canal Street so that one hundred vendors of handcrafted goods, from artwork to jewelry to food products, can set up booths along the street.

A central gathering place, at Olde Western and Broadway, surrounding the Mai Pole, has been added, which will include seating, food vendors such as Beggars Pizza, beverages including beer from the Blue Island Beer Company, a masseuse giving mini-massages, live music performances as well as a DJ, and other activities.

Pubs, restaurants, and retail shops will be open along Olde Western, including the Rock Island Public House, the newly opened BUB Café in the old Jebens hardware store building, and Vada Winter women’s boutique.

The vendors are arranged by the Streetz Artz Alliance, a coalition of 400 handcrafters run by John Streetz. According to Streetz, many favorite vendors will be returning, plus approximately forty of the vendors will be displaying at Mai Fest for the first time.

“There’s going to be a brand-new mix of artists, with new artists no one’s seen before, so this is something exciting to look forward

to,” said Streetz, who will do artist features and updates on the Mai Fest event page on Facebook.

Central to the Streetz Artz Alliance’s partnership with BIAA for Mai Fest, said Streetz, is the Blue Island Beer Company (BIBC) at 13357 Olde Western Ave. Streetz aligns craft breweries with arts and craft shows, an agreeable combination that allows attendees to relax with a good local craft beer in hand while they walk around to visit the vendors.

BIBC is the hub of activities on Olde Western Avenue, and owner Alan Cromwell is happy to participate in Mai Fest. BIBC will “bring the bar outside” to the visitors.

“There’s really nothing else like Olde Western Avenue and Mai Fest on the south side. There’s a genuine loyalty for handmade, handcrafted items from the customers who come out to this event. We look forward to seeing all the familiar faces from Blue Island and the surrounding towns and Indiana, and lots of new faces, also,” said Cromwell.

The City of Blue Island is completing a streetscaping project that has installed new paving, curbs, and lighting on Olde Western, and benches are due next. Cromwell reports that “there have been nothing but compliments for the transformation,” and he, Leamanczyk, and Streetz give kudos to Blue Island Mayor Fred Bilotto for getting the job done.

Bilotto and his administration have been supportive of Mai Fest since its inception.

“This event belongs on Olde Western Avenue; it’s the perfect place for fests. We want to see Mai Fest grow every year,” said Bilotto.

Bilotto said the city is cooperating with the police and fire departments and public works to provide police and security coverage and waste management for the event.

The cost of Mai Fest is free to the public, but a donation is suggested. The BIAA is looking for more sponsors for the event. Different sponsorship levels allow businesses to reach the public in various ways. BIAA can be contacted through Leamanczyk at 773/718-0881 or joe.leamanczyk@gmail.com.

Mai Fest will take place rain or shine. Springtime weather is unpredictable so there are contingency plans to move the vendors inside and to other safe areas if it rains.

Giannoulias Unveils New “OneStop-Shop” DMV Experience

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias revealed a more customer-focused, professional and efficient DMV experience today that will soon be rolled out at facilities statewide.

The new “One-Stop-Shop” DMV design was officially launched today at the Secretary of State’s office in west suburban Plano.

As a part of the office’s ongoing modernization efforts, the new DMV experience will save customers considerable time and several steps by offering both vehicle and driver services at a single service counter.

“For too long customers have been required to follow an illogical path through the state’s DMV facilities. My administration used data to determine the most efficient paths for customers in order to cut down on confusion and save time,” Giannoulias said. “I’m excited to see customers’ reactions at the new look and feel of our DMV facilities. The ‘One-Stop-Shop’

experience tears down silos, revolutionizing how our facilities serve Illinoisans.”

At a single service counter, customers can obtain the following services:

• Apply for a REAL ID or a new driver’s license or state ID card.

• Renew a driver’s license, state ID or Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL).

• Order a new license plate using Pick-A-Plate.

• Register or renew their vehicle registration.

• Join the Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. Drivers services and vehicle services employees at “One-Stop-Shop” DMVs are now cross-trained to provide both sets of services. The office has redesigned customer service counters and signage to create a more logical flow.

The “One-Stop-Shop” experience will be implemented at all new DMV facilities. The office is conducting an assessment of existing facilities and prioritizing the rollout of this new experience.

Be careful when naming beneficiaries

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

You might not have thought much about beneficiary designations — but they can play a big role in your estate planning.

When you purchase insurance policies and open investment accounts, such as your IRA, you’ll be asked to name a beneficiary, and, in some cases, more than one. This might seem easy, especially if you have a spouse and children, but if you experience a major life event, such as a divorce or a death in the family, you may need to make some changes — because beneficiary designations carry a lot of weight under the law.

In fact, these designations can supersede the instructions you may have written in your will or living trust, so everyone in your family should know who is expected to get which assets. One significant benefit of having proper beneficiary designations in place is that they may enable beneficiaries to avoid the time-consuming — and possibly expensive — probate process.

The beneficiary issue can become complex because not everyone reacts the same way to events such as divorce — some people want their ex-spouses to still receive assets while others don’t. Furthermore, not all the states have the same rules about how beneficiary designations are treated after a divorce. And some financial assets are treated differently than others.

Here’s the big picture: If you’ve named your spouse as a beneficiary of an IRA, bank or brokerage account, insurance policy, will or trust, this beneficiary designation will automatically be revoked upon divorce in about half the states. So, if you still want your ex-spouse to get these assets, you will need to name them as a non-spouse beneficiary after the divorce. But if you’ve named your spouse as beneficiary for a 401(k) plan or pension, the designation will remain intact until and unless you change it, regardless of where you live.

However, in community property states,

couples are generally required to split equally all assets they acquired during their marriage. When couples divorce, the community property laws require they split their assets 50/50, but only those assets they obtained while they lived in that state.

If you were to stay in the same community property state throughout your marriage and divorce, the ownership issue is generally straightforward, but if you were to move to or from one of these states, it might change the joint ownership picture.

Thus far, we’ve only talked about beneficiary designation issues surrounding divorce. But if an ex-spouse — or any beneficiary — passes away, the assets will generally pass to a contingent beneficiary — which is why it’s important that you name one at the same time you designate the primary beneficiary. Also, it may be appropriate to name a special needs trust as beneficiary for a family member who has special needs or becomes disabled. If this individual were to be the direct beneficiary, any assets passing directly into their hands could affect their eligibility for certain programs.

You may need to work with a legal professional to sort out beneficiary designation issues and the rules that apply in your state. But you may also want to do a beneficiary review with your financial advisor whenever you experience a major life event, such as a marriage, divorce or the addition of a new child. Your investments, retirement accounts and life insurance proceeds are valuable assets — and you want them to go where you intended.

Area Men Invited To “Rough Cut Men Movie Experience”

On Saturday, April 27, Crossroads Community Church will host a full day of fellowship, lunch, with watching and discussing the “ROUGH CUT MEN” movie experience.

“The event is to challenge and help men to become the best husbands, fathers, and followers of Jesus Christ that they can become,” explained Drew Brown, senior pastor of Crossroads Community Church. “You don’t need to belong to our church to attend. This event is open for all men of various denominations.”

The church is located at 1538 Janice Drive about two blocks north of US 30 in Schererville. It will start at 8 am and continue to 4:30 pm.

Using clips from major motion pictures, Bible scriptures, and personal testimony, men attending realize that they are not the only ones facing challenges. The “Rough Cut Men Movie Experience” has been presented at US service military academies like West Point, Teen Challenge Men’s Centers, and Iron Sharpens Iron Men’s conferences. Any male who is 16 or older can attend the event. The cost is $25 per person. The church would like a phone call to reserve a seat but people will be allowed to register on the day of the event which is Saturday, April 27. The phone number of the church is 219-322-6400.

Donuts and coffee will be provided at the beginning of the event in the morning. Lunch will be provided by Drew BBQ and Sausage. David Dusek is the founder and speaker of Rough Cut Men Ministries. Details about that can be found at roughcutmen.org. Its mission is to “equip men to grow in their walk with Jesus Christ to make them stronger husbands, fathers, and men of God,” according to the flyer distributed at the church.

Both parties had filled in the real estate contract including purchase price and earnest money amounts. All we had to do was to get together again to SIGN the contract and give the earnest money. The seller called me tonight and said the deal was off. Didn’t we have a deal? Answer: Nope. In real estate contracts must be in writing. There must be an “offer” and “acceptance” and there must be “consideration” such as a deposit. “Acceptance” in this case did not occur because there is no signature. In your case what you had was a friendly chat and a bunch of paper. What you heard may not have been what the seller heard. Without signatures on a piece of paper there is no way to know what was accepted and what was not. While the purchase price and the earnest money are important, they are just a few of the items which a typical real estate agreement might cover. For instance, how was the title guaranteed, if at all? Who pays for the survey? Who will pay points at closing? What was the possession agreement? Do the appliances

Heart Smart

“You need to be grateful.” How do you hear that said in your head? How do you picture the person saying it? Do you hear a stern voice? Do you see a wagging finger? Do you imagine someone scolding you?

The Bible tells us to be grateful. “And be thankful” (Colossians 3:15c). “Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18a). Do you hear God speaking with a stern voice? Do you imagine him wagging his finger at you?

God commands us to give thanks and be grateful because he loves us. We need to be grateful because gratitude and joy go hand and hand. Gratitude is God’s antidote to grumpiness. You cannot be grumpy and grateful at the same time. Try it.

You know what I’m talking about. Someone surprises you with a $100 gift card. You weren’t entitled to it. She didn’t owe it to you. She doesn’t expect anything in return. This gift was the overflow of her kind and generous heart. A surge of gratitude floods your heart. You express your gratitude sincerely and warmly. “Thank you! You really blessed me today!” And what are you feeling, along with gratitude, in this moment? Joy.

Now imagine the opposite. This person is routinely kind and generous to you. And you’re one of those entitled people who feels like everyone owes you everything. So, when she gives you a $100 gift card, you feel neither gratitude nor joy. Instead, you’re usually grumpy because you’re focused on what you feel entitled to but haven’t gotten. What a miserable existence!

Above all, gratitude to God for all his gifts, especially his most precious Gift, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, is the ultimate recipe for joy in relationship with him and others.

10 Tips to Raise a Good Human

As an educator, I’m constantly reminded of things that we as a society used to do decades ago that we don’t need to do anymore. We don’t go to the library to search the microfiche machine for information about a topic. We don’t need spare change to make photocopies. We don’t even have to go nextdoor to see our neighbor or leave the house to head to work. We can FaceTime or schedule a Zoom meeting. What is most disappointing is that we don’t need to write personal notes or thank you cards because we have the ability to text or send an email. But just because we don’t have to, doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t. While many of these changes streamline our life and they have made things easier, there are things from the past that we don’t do anymore (or require our children to do) that really need to become part of the fabric of our lives again.

When I was five years old, my mother would give me a preprinted card that said “Thank you for coming to my party. I love the gift! Love, Danielle.” I sat there until the bump on my finger was red and sore making sure that every single person who attended my party would receive a thank you note.

I remember telling my own children that when we go to our friend’s house to visit, the rules that might be acceptable in our house may not be in their house. When we visit, we must respect the rules of the host. While my kids are allowed to take the couch cushions off my couch and build a fort, it does not mean that behavior is welcome or permitted at the house of the host. I would remind my kids to say please and thank you, to look someone in the eye when they are talking to you and to always be respectful of those around you.

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that much of the customs and rituals revolving around respect and courtesy have fallen by the wayside. For the most part, kids sending a handwritten thank you is a thing of the past. I see parents at restaurants allowing their children to run around the table, throw food on the floor and disturb other patrons. I hear stories from upset friends and colleagues who have guests with young children over that the children did not respect their home. They jumped on their couches. They didn’t clean up after themselves and they didn’t listen to their parents when it was time to go.

laughed and smiled and said “Come on now, eat your food and if you do, you can have the phone back.” I thought for sure that John Quinones from the show “What Would You Do?” had to be hiding somewhere, ready to pop out and chastise all of the patrons for not saying something to these parents. But, no. It was just an example of parents who didn’t understand that by accepting that type of behavior, it was only going to make their parenting harder down the line.

I’m sure these things have happened many times in the past. However, as the world gets busier and faster, we need to take the time to slow down and teach our children about being good conscientious, caring, and courteous little humans so they grow up to be good, conscientious, caring, and courteous adults. Here are a few things to remember that will not only make your life as a parent easier, but will also give your child the tools and foundation they need to become a good human.

Ten Tips to Raise a Good Human

1. Say “please” and “thank you.”

2. Listen when others talk and make eye contact to show that you are interested.

3. Always share gratitude with others. Take time to write a thank you card and mail it!

4. Ask before you touch things that aren’t yours and always put things back before you leave.

5. Solve problems by talking -- not biting, hitting, or raising your voice.

6. Share your toys and take turns playing.

7. Use kind words with friends and family.

8. Follow the rules at school, home, or when visiting others.

9. Always say sorry if you hurt someone and try to make things right.

10. Be patient and wait your turn.

These things are simple. They’re easy to remind our kids to do and they are easy for us to model. Kids will follow our lead and if we show that these things are important to us, they will be important to them.

Once, when having lunch in a nice New York City restaurant, I saw a family sitting across from us with a little boy who was as adorable as could be. However, the minute his mom told him he couldn’t use an iPhone at the table and he had to eat his food, the adorable little boy disappeared. He picked up two glasses from the table and threw them across the restaurant.

I thought to myself, “Wow, this little boy is going to be in a heap of trouble!” But I was wrong. The parents

Sent Letter to Florida Attorney General

WOODROW WILCOX

On March 11, 2024, I sent a letter to the Attorney General of Florida. I did that because I’ve been helping more clients who visited or recently moved to Florida. I wanted a quicker and easier way to get the attention of Florida medical firms and their billing firms. Here is the letter that I sent.

Dear Representative, I want to connect with the correct department or personnel for filing complaints to protect senior citizens who are billed for medical services INCORRECTLY.

Our insurance agency is the largest in the State of Indiana for senior citizen and Medicare related policies and clients. We have over 22,000 clients.

A few of our clients move from Indiana to Florida every year. Sometimes, they choose to let us continue to be their agency if the insurance company will let them do that for a few months. Some of our clients get a

second home in Florida and visit Florida for the winter months but return to Indiana in the spring.

When these people originally from Indiana get medical services in Florida, and the medical billing is messed up, who should I contact at the Florida Attorney General’s office to help our client file a complaint against the Florida medical service provider or its billing firm?

To help you understand this problem, I have attached a few of the published articles that I have written. Thank you for your assistance.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

Giannoulias Announces First-Ever DMV in Chicago’s Chinatown

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office is opening its first DMV in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. The express facility will offer efficient and convenient service to residents of the rapidly developing Chinatown, Pilsen, Bronzeville, Bridgeport and South Loop communities.

The opening marks the first Chicago-based DMV facility with the “One-Stop-Shop” experience, offering residents streamlined service in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Spanish.

“We’re excited to offer this new express facility, which will provide essential services in an efficient and swift manner to the residents of the growing and bustling Chinatown, Pilsen, Bronzeville, Bridgeport and South Loop neighborhoods,” Giannoulias said. “This will close a gap between our facilities in Chicago’s Loop and the Far South Side, offering convenience and accessibility.”

The new DMV, located at 2250 S. Canal St. and open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, will offer walk-in services only at this time.

The “One-Stop-Shop” model was launched earlier this month in Plano. Cross-training has allowed employees to offer both drivers services and vehicle services at a single counter, saving customers time and preventing confusion.

As a part of the office’s ongoing modernization efforts, the “One-Stop-Shop” experience will save customers considerable time and several steps by offering both vehicle and driver services at a single service counter.

“Bringing the ‘One-Stop-Shop’ DMV experience to Chinatown will provide residents

with comprehensive and quick service in an inviting and professional setting,” said Alderwoman Nicole Lee (11th Ward). “Members of the South Side community will now have a convenient opportunity to obtain all the services provided by the Secretary of State’s office here in Chinatown.”

“I’m excited to join Secretary Giannoulias to unveil this ‘One-Stop-Shop’ Express DMV that will greatly benefit the residents in our Chinatown neighborhood and the greater South Side community,” said State Senator Celina Villanueva (12th District-Chicago). “This facility will provide convenient and efficient access to the essential services provided by the Secretary of State’s office.”

“The new Chinatown ‘One-Stop-Shop’ Express DMV will offer community members an easily accessible way to obtain the services offered by Secretary of State’s office,” said State Representative Theresa Mah (24th DistrictChicago). “This new facility will be a huge benefit to the Chinatown community and Chicago’s South Side as a whole.”

At a single service counter, customers can obtain the following services:

• Apply for a REAL ID or a new driver’s license or state ID card.

• Renew a driver’s license, state ID or Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL).

• Renew their vehicle registration.

• Apply for disability placards.

• Join the Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.

Jewish Communities Worldwide Mark the Annual Observance of Passover

Passover, a cornerstone of the Jewish calendar, is currently underway as Jewish communities worldwide gather to celebrate the ancient story of liberation from slavery in Egypt. This significant holiday, which began at sundown on Friday, April 12th, commemorates the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt over 3,000 years ago.

During the eight-day observance, families and communities partake in various rituals and traditions, primarily centered around the Seder, a ceremonial meal held on the first two nights of Passover. The Seder, rich with symbolism and storytelling, guides participants through the narrative of the Israelites’ journey to freedom.

Central to the Seder is the Seder plate, adorned with symbolic foods such as bitter herbs (maror) representing the bitterness of slavery, and charoset, a mixture of fruit and nuts symbolizing the mortar used by the Israelite slaves. Other items include Karpas, a vegetable dipped in saltwater to symbolize tears, and Zeroa, a roasted shank bone representing the sacrificial lamb.

to 2016. Currently he is an associate professor of radiology at Rosalind Franklin and actively involved in teaching medical students. He is also a valued member of the admissions committee at the university.

He has been an ISMS member for 40 years and has served for many years as an ISMS alternate delegate and delegate to the AMA, as well as a past trustee and chair of the ISMS Governmental Affairs Council. Dr. Vyas served as president of the Lake County Medical Society for two separate terms and served on multiple committees, at the county and state level. He is also a past president of the Indian American Medical Association.

Dr. Vyas’ term as ISMS president will run through April 2025.

Matzah, unleavened bread, is a staple of the Passover diet, recalling the haste with which the Israelites fled Egypt, leaving no time for their bread to rise. Throughout the evening, participants consume four cups of wine, each representing a promise of deliverance made by God in the Exodus story.

Beyond its historical significance, Passover serves as a time for reflection, gratitude, and renewal of commitment to freedom and justice. It bridges ancient traditions with contemporary meanings, uniting Jewish communities across the globe in a shared celebration of liberation and resilience.

As Passover continues, Jewish families and communities will come together to reaffirm their values, pass down cherished traditions to future generations, and strengthen bonds of faith and heritage. The spirit of Passover reminds us all of the enduring power of hope, resilience, and the pursuit of justice.

Everyone Wants Benefits

When seeking a new position before you apply or accept a position you typically look at what are the benefits that come along with the job. Benefits are the bonus on top of the salary that comes with the company as an incentive to attract employees. Employment benefits such as paid health insurance, private disability insurance, dental, vision, paid vacation, sick leave, and reimbursement of expenses are considered before deciding to work for a company. We all want to reap the benefits but don’t always want to complete the work to earn the benefits. This applies not only to work, but also to our physical health, emotional wellbeing, finances, and spiritual life.

Physically, we are bombarded with images of physically fit people or products and programs marketed to get us in shape through advertisements, TV programs, and social media. They highlight the benefits of being in shape, through improved mobility, agility, and stamina with the message that these will make you live longer. We’re aware of what it takes to achieve good physical health: eating nutritious foods, staying active through exercise, walking, and adequate sleep. Despite this, many of us struggle to reach optimal health.

Rather than choosing a healthy snack after a workout and getting sufficient rest, we often succumb to cravings for highcalorie treats while resting on the couch and watching television all night. We struggle with committing to the necessary action to reap the reward of good health. Incorporating simple activities like walking in place or taking laps through the house can contribute to overall health improvement.

Emotionally, well-being plays a crucial role in mental health by developing a positive attitude and having resilience. Mastering emotional control contributes to numerous benefits such as enhancing productivity, decision-making abilities, relationships, and overall influence. Maintaining composure boosts productivity and keeps us focused. Relationships thrive in both professional and personal settings based on our emotional control. Acknowledging

and managing emotions appropriately reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. Taking a moment to pause, listen, and reflect before reacting allows for thoughtful consideration and prevents impulsive responses we might later regret. This approach builds emotional intelligence and a healthier mind.

Financially, we want to reap the benefits of financial security and abundance. Early retirement, luxury vehicles, exotic trips, and beautiful homes are benefits of financial security, sound planning, and investing. Seeking employment with excellent retirement plans, making good investment choices, building savings, and disciplined budgeting are ways to sow into your financial well-being to ensure monetary security. However, weaknesses such as instant gratification, keeping up with the Jones, and reliance on credit take away from financial benefits. It’s a struggle to fight against those urges to work for financial security because we live in a world of immediate wants and desires. Staying in control of your finances through savings, planning, and budgeting will help you to sow now to reap greater financial benefits.

Spiritually, we want to reap the benefits of the Kingdom of God. As believers, we desire the benefits of receiving salvation, the forgiveness of sins, and the fulfillment of God’s promises. We want favor, blessing, and everlasting life from God. The benefits of walking in faith are immeasurable. Sometimes, we don’t do what is required of us to obtain these benefits by showing gratitude. David states in Psalms 103:2 (NIV) “Praise the Lord, my soul; and forget not all his benefits” reminding us to be grateful for God’s gifts during good and bad times. We struggle in good times with giving credit to God for our success. We must continually walk in our faith, obedience, and gratitude to reap the benefits of God’s unfailing love and provision.

Everyone wants benefits however work is required to reap what is sown and desired. Earn and enjoy all your benefits today. Y? Why Not! Check us out on Facebook https://www. facebook.com/ywhynotshow/

GILBERT

Mary Ann Gilbert, nee Strayer, age 89, of Dyer, IN, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Glenn Austin Gilbert Sr. Loving mother of the late James Gilbert, Ann Gilbert, Diane (Arturo Sanchez) Gilbert, John (Judith) Gilbert, and Glenn (Sheena) Gilbert Jr. Proud grandmother of Anngelique (Timothy) Gilbert-Ciaverella, Claire (Ben Trepp) Gilbert, Madeline (Jonathan) Klecker, Lila Cruickshank Lahola, Blair Lahola, Caroline Lahola, Corey Viehdeffer, Danielle Gilbert, John Bilinski, John Glenn Gilbert Jr., Christina Gilbert, the late James Gilbert, Jessica (Daron) Lamb, Megan (Mark) Levin, and Aiden Gilbert; great-grandmother of Cynthia Ciaverella, Timothy Ciaverella Jr., Teddy Trepp, Iris Klecker, Asher Klecker, James Gilbert Jr., Sophia Gilbert, Amelia Rose Gilbert, John Bilinski Jr., Jaxon Gilbert, John Glenn Gilbert III, Lily Partridge, Leilani Lamb, Peyton Lamb, and Daron Lamb Jr., Jonah Levin, and Julia Levin; greatgreat-grandmother of Aubrey McKinney and AJ McKinney. Dear sister of the late Elizabeth Schiller. Preceded in death by her parents James and Isabelle Strayer.

Mary Ann Dorothy Esther Emma (nee Strayer) Gilbert was a remarkable woman. Born on her grandparents farm in Yorkville, IL, Mary Ann grew up in York, PA, where she later met her husband Glenn Austin Gilbert (Sr., deceased). As a child, Mary Ann was an excellent student, and enjoyed painting and other crafts. Her parents relocated to Chicago, IL, where she finished out her education. Smitten by the love bug, Glenn followed and they were later married in Chicago. Mary Ann bore six children, one (Ivy) which died in childbirth. Fiercely protective of her children, she was a force to be reckoned with, and was instrumental in changing the dress code rules for public school which required that girls wear dresses even in sub-zero weather. Later, she took on the school bus system, as her deaf son was spending hours riding around before and after school, due to disorganized routes. They offered her a job and she later organized a strike to fight for safer vehicles for the children to travel in. Mary Ann then went on to work at Oak Forest Hospital, where every patient had a terminal diagnosis. Although her dream had always been to be a nurse, the emotional impact she experienced when a patient passed was too difficult. She ended up in the Admitting Department, where she excelled due to her ability to analyze and remember large amounts of information,

ensuring that patients were directed to the proper care and resources.

Mary Ann led a rich family life. She was a fabulous cook and organizer, and enjoyed hosting many parties. She always remembered everyone’s’ birthday and what they liked, and we all looked forward to her baking which rivaled that of any fancy bakery. Her home was the center of family gatherings for many many years. Mary Ann and Glenn bought a cottage on Shafer Lake in Indiana, and for years happy family weekends were spent boating and enjoying the Indiana Beach Amusement Park. Later, they bought their dream home in Dyer, IN with lots of space to accommodate the large family gatherings that Mary Ann loved so much to host. After Glenn Sr. passed in 2022, Mary Ann lived more quietly. They had 69 years together and she missed her partner and true love. But being a strong woman, she continued to manage her affairs and serve as the family matriarch. Mary Ann always said she had big shoulders, and always had a kind ear and a warm heart for her loved ones when troubles arose. Her character was strong, but she always had a soft spot for the underdog. She was a deep, intelligent and thoughtful person, not afraid to confront frailties or fears. Her spiritual beliefs provided her with a solid and abiding foundation, that she fearlessly maintained unto her last moments - leaving this earth peacefully in her sleep. She leaves behind an enormous empty space in our hearts, and will be missed tremendously by all who love her.

PAYOVICH

Kathleen M. Payovich, nee Sobczynski, age 76, of Dyer, IN, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Beloved and doting wife for 50 years to the late Gordon Payovich. Treasured and loving mother to Steve (Jennifer) Payovich and Kristen (David) Popiolek. Proud grandmother (Ga) of Robert, Reid, and Tyler. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents Van Walter and Genevieve Sobczynski.

Kathy was known for her kind and giving nature. She had a love for baking, the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with her family and pets. Baking was one of the ways Kathy expressed love to her friends and family. Sharing that love with her daughter on so many occasions. The two baked for many over the years and were often involved in neighborhood cookie exchanges. If they weren’t baking, they were crafting, ending up with an entire hand-painted Christmas village for all to enjoy.

Kathy was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, rarely missing a game, especially during the Kris Bryant years. She would always watch with her husband and text her son throughout. At times threatening her son that she would be switching to the White Sox if the Cubs were losing.

Kathy looked forward to spending time with her family and game nights were a big to-do in the Payovich household. She didn’t mind getting slapped with whipped cream playing the game Pie Face with her grandkids or having fun poked at her for listing a rhinoceros as a farm animal in Scattergories. As long as she was with her family, she was happy.

Dog rescue was another of Kathy’s passions. She would frequently search the adoption sites to see who else needed a good home. On one occasion she went as far as tricking her husband into bringing a fifth dog into the mix, although he didn’t need much convincing being a dog lover himself.

Kathy will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of those she left behind. May she rest in peace.

Why Wild Bird Lovers

Should

Choose Top-ofthe-Crop Natural Feed - If you can’t read it, don’t feed it

(Joan Casanova) Have you ever wondered what’s in your favorite packaged foods, grabbed a box from your pantry, read the ingredients and realized you still didn’t know what you’re eating? The ingredients in some processed foods can read like a chemist’s shopping list. Now imagine if backyard birds could read. What would they say about the ingredients in the food you feed them?

A growing number of Americans are choosing natural foods for their pets; nearly one-third say they prefer natural products, according to PetFoodIndustry.com. People who feed wild birds also want to know they’re feeding the most natural and nutritious options. It’s hard to be confident when reading the mystifying ingredient list on feed bags makes you feel like a bird brain.

With an abundance of options, ranging from commercial bird feeds to small-batch varieties, understanding the differences can help bird lovers make informed choices to meet wild birds’ nutritional needs while considering factors like sustainability and quality.

The wild bird experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products, Co. offer these tips to ensure you’re feeding your feathered friends a healthy, natural diet.

While commercial bird feeds aim to provide basic nutrition for birds, the quality and nutritional content can vary. Some mixes contain a high proportion of less desirable seeds and fillers, offering limited nutritional value.

Small batch bird feeds prioritize nutritional content, using premium ingredients rich in essential nutrients, fats and proteins. This can provide birds with a more balanced diet, promoting overall health and vitality.

Avoid commercial bird feeds that are full of cheap fillers, such as red milo, millet, cracked corn, oats and wheat. Fillers lack nutritional value and birds will kick them right out of the feeder.

Instead, select small batch, natural feed comprised of topof-the-crop seeds which contain no chemicals or mineral oil like Cole’s and bypass seed coated with them. Some commercial bird feeds are coated with mineral oil and mixed with crushed rock to add “vitamins.” Current regulations allow manufacturers to list nutritional components of mineral oil (iron, zinc) and crushed rock (vitamin A, calcium carbonate) separately, which can make the ingredients look more impressive. Mineral oil makes birdseed shiny and helps hide dirt and dust, and crushed rock adds weight to the product.

Take note of ingredients you can’t read; often it’s an indication the ingredient is synthetic or lab engineered. Ingredients like menadione sodium bisulfite complex and thiamine mononitrate aren’t found in natural foods; they’re man-made versions of vitamins. The rule of thumb for buying all-natural is “If you can’t read it, don’t feed it.”

Focus on serving feed with an ingredient list you can read and understand. For instance, Cole’s Sunflower Meats contains nothing but shelled sunflower seeds and White Millet contains 100% white millet. Super simple, right?

Study birds visiting your feeders and research feed they prefer or buy feed from a reputable company that’s done that work for you. For example, Cole’s offers select natural seed choices developed and based on research about what birds actually eat. Feed is specifically formulated to attract certain species of birds as well as the largest number of birds. No cheap filler seeds are used and seed is cleaned to ensure quality - no sticks and dirt. When you know and serve

what backyard birds prefer, they’ll keep coming back for more.

Supplement seed with natural foods you have at home. For example, woodpeckers love raw peanuts, mockingbirds love fruit and chickadees savor suet. Soak raisins and currants in water overnight then serve or purchase blends with a dried fruit and nut mixture, like Nutberry suet. To attract orioles, skewer halved oranges on a spike near feeders.

Buy feed from companies specializing in wild bird food. Some offer bird feed as a side product of pet products or grass seed producers. Conversely, Cole’s exclusively produces and sells products for feeding backyard birds. Seeds are packaged like human food in “Harvest Fresh Lock” packaging so seeds don’t lose nutritional content or dry out and spoil.
