SSC to Offer New Summer Bridge Program to First-Year, First-Time Students South Suburban College (SSC) is providing an opportunity for 30 first-year, first-time students to earn seven free college credit hours in eight short weeks. The new First Year Experience (FYE) Summer Bridge Program will provide free tuition, books and fees, one-on-one tutoring, mentoring activities and leadership development. Dr. Charles Collins is the SSC Summer Bridge Student Success Strategist. “The FYE Summer Bridge Program will help students begin their college experience in a focused environment, strengthen their academic skills, meet new friends while developing a peer support network, and become more familiar with the SSC campus and its resources,” he remarked. Those interested in applying for the Summer Bridge Program are welcome to attend an informational session on April 14. Two options will be available via Zoom at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. A confirmation email will be sent with details to access either session after registration is complete. Visit the following link to
register: www.ssc.edu/summer-bridge. An English, reading and math placement test are required prior to admittance into the Summer Bridge Program. The application deadline for this program is May 25. Options for orientation are available on either June 1 or June 2. The program will run Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from June 6 through August 1, 2022. Questions about the Summer Bridge Program can be directed to Anissa Jones, Dean of Student Development, at (708) 5962000 ext. 5708. This program will be offered on SSC’s Main Campus, located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. SSC is a community college serving 21 communities including parts of the Chicago Southland and Northwest Indiana. SSC provides a variety of support services and leadership opportunities to its students in addition to a wide range of affordable academic programs.
Dart Announces Anti-Carjacking Legislation Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced legislation today requiring auto manufacturers to create a 24/7 recovery hotline to help law enforcement quickly track stolen vehicles. The inability for law enforcement to access tracking information in real time after a carjacking makes it difficult to catch offenders and prevent the vehicle from being used in additional crimes. Currently, each auto manufacturer has their own process for obtaining such existing information, often causing unnecessary delays. Under the legislation, law enforcement can obtain this information, if the owner consents, when a vehicle has been carjacked or is being used in the commission of other violent crimes. Cook County experienced 2,060 carjackings in the last 12 months and carjackings rose 38 percent from 2020 to 2021. The Sheriff’s Office has been gathering and analyzing detailed data on the crime as part of its work with a regional carjacking task force. The Office also has been engaged in discussions with auto manufacturers since December about a potential hotline and other ways the industry could help combat the rise in carjackings. “Tracking is a game changer. Gaining better access to this information in a way that protects consumers will go a long way to turning back the rise in this particularly vicious crime,” Sheriff Dart said. “In analyzing data on this crime, we know that the sooner we know where the car is, the better chance we have of finding the offenders and preventing the vehicle from being used in other crimes.” SB 4205 is sponsored by State Senator Michael Hastings and HB 5744 is sponsored by State Representative Marty Moylan. “The faster we are able to tackle this issue and arrest the
people who carjack, the better off and safer society will be,” said state Sen. Michael Hastings. “I am extremely proud of this bill.” “A comprehensive response to the recent rise in carjackings must include input from our law enforcement,” state Rep. Marty Moylan said. “I am proud to collaborate with law enforcement officers like Sheriff Dart to come up with solutions to this public safety issue.” The legislation also will require auto manufacturers to provide law enforcement agencies details about the tracking capabilities available in their vehicles by model, year, and version. In addition, auto manufacturers will waive all fees associated with initiating, renewing, or maintain the vehicle tracking and/or vehicle disabling systems in response to law enforcement investigations involving carjackings or other violent crimes. The public will also be able to access information about whether their cars can be tracked on the Sheriff’s website. In December, Sheriff Dart wrote to major auto manufacturers requesting their assistance in creating a hotline law enforcement can use to receive vehicle tracking information in real time. He also testified on March 1 before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee about the rise in carjackings and his work with automakers on solutions. In the meantime, Sheriff Dart developed a consent-to-track form that owners can submit to the Sheriff’s Office to grant access to vehicle tracking information in the event it’s illegally taken. Having the completed form on hand will make it easier for law enforcement to access tracking information from manufacturers. The consent form and safety tips are available on the Sheriff’s Office website.
Let’s Have A Different Conversation People stay in tune to who they are, and not loose themselves in the midst of the unfamiliar. The cards are designed to help men, women, father/sons and those who still desire to date, to gain better self awareness and to have an impactful tool (always on hand) for an effective Personal Time of Reflection. Their cards help people identify and work on their personal triggers with family and other situations that provoke, irritate, or annoy you and prevent you from showing up as your Best Self. “Memories and Money” MIKE BUDER One of the first questions someone naturally asks themselves as a renter is, “why should I become a homeowner?” There are many reasons, but probably the first one is the pride in knowing that you have established a foundation for building personal wealth as well as a basis for future memories. Think back to your childhood, many of your fondest memories may be from events on your front porch, backyard or inside your childhood home. Holidays, birthdays and most other family events typically took place in your home growing up. Anything you or your parents wanted to do to your home, within reason of course, were options of your choosing. Besides knowing that you have taken a major step in financial independence, buying a home also creates a sense of pride that few things can replicate. Aside from the emotional
uplift of homeownership, any decision you make involving money has got to make sense. There are few things anyone can do that have a greater impact on their finances than owning a home. The reasons to buy your first home are numerous, not only today, but anytime. In a comparison of renters versus homeowners, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board of Consumer Finance found that the average net worth of renters was $4,000 compared to the average net worth of homeowners being $184,400. One of the largest tax deductions most people report each year is the interest they pay on their mortgage. While not exact, on a $150,000 mortgage with an interest rate of 4%, the amount of the first year’s interest would be approximately $6,000. For a family earning $70,000 in a federal tax bracket of 25%, this amounts to
significant savings. Homeowners also get to deduct the property taxes paid from their taxable income. And last but not least, as homeowners make each mortgage payment, they reduce their mortgage debt and increase equity at the same time their home appreciates in value. Prices and interest rates are on the move! Now is the time to buy a home! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Ancient Israel had an annual deep cleaning day. It was a spiritual cleaning day, called the Day of Atonement. It revolved around two goats. The High Priest slaughtered the first goat, then brought its blood into the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle was God’s house, where he lived in the midst of his people. The High Priest sprinkled the goat’s blood on God’s furniture, beginning with his throne. The message: Israel’s sin against God – their disloyalty, disobedience, self-centeredness, rebellious attitudes, and distorted ways of thinking, living, and relating, were like stinking garbage piling up in God’s house. God loved his people, but he could not stand the stench of their sin. The first goat’s blood removed the garbage of Israel’s sin from God’s presence. It also removed God’s anger against it. Outside, God’s people sought and trusted him for his forgiveness. Finally, the house was clean! However, the sins of God’s people remained piled high outside the house, like mounds of garbage on the curb. That’s where the second goat came in. The High Priest laid his hands on the head of that goat and confessed all of Israel’s sins over it. In this way, he loaded the massive, stinking pile of sin-garbage on the back of the goat. That goat then carted it all away to the Great Garbage Dump in the desert and perished there under its weight. This drama pointed to Jesus. He was the first goat, whose blood washed away our sin and God’s anger against it. He was the second goat who carried our sins to hell’s great garbage dump when he died on the cross. Thanks to the Day of Atonement (a.k.a. Good Friday), God forgives and welcomes all who seek and trust him for his gift of cleansing. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church (cfcsh.org)

MUNSTER FIRE DEPARTMENT HELPS BURN CAMP KIDS: Brad Susala and Creighton Kooy of the Munster Fire Department were at the Munster Strack’s and Van Til on Ridge Road last Saturday and Sunday collecting funds for the HOOSIER BURN CAMP. The firefighters support the camp which helps kids in burn situations enjoy some time away from a hospital setting. Bravo to two firefighters collecting for a very good cause!

SHOWING OFF HER NEW DENTAL GAP IS REAGAN CUNEO AT BREAKFAST WITH MOM: Reagan, Age 6, could surely sing, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth,” only in this case the Easter Bunny would have to bring them! Reagan and her Mom, Katherine Cuneo, are enjoying breakfast at the Corner Cafe in Griffith, a popular Downtown Griffith eatery with the locals. “We love this place,” noted Katherine. “We live down the street and are here a lot!” ***

WATERS EDGE ON RIDGE OFFERS BOUTIQUE ITEMS AND FANCY FISH: The recently relocated boutique type showroom had been located on Wentworth Avenue in Lansing for many years. More recently owners Carolyn and Dave Scofield moved to a former garden implement store and completely redid the surroundings. Beautiful one of a kind items, home decor, apparel and fish have a glamorous new home on Ridge, 5 Ridge Road, across from Stack’s. In another picture are Carolyn Scofield and her right had gals, Debbie Gliwa and Helen Backe. With Carolyn’s keen eye for modern decor, there are even some refinished trash to treasure items. And if you are a fish fancier, Water’s Edge is where you want to hang out--beautiful goldfish and Shubunkins swim in a giant tank and everything one would want to keep said fishes healthy are in the store. Way too much to talk about here, but suffice it to say there is something for EVERYONE at WATERS EDGE. weponds@comcast.net or visit their web at www.weponds.net 708895-5699 ***
KDULCHE MEANS “HOW SWEET”: And the new shop on Ridge Road in Lansing truly is. With a pink and pretty theme and florals all around, this new honeyed emporium is a haven for the ladies. Pictured here is owner Edwardo Zepeda and server Alexa Ayala. Edwardo and his best friend Paola Ayala are partners in the recently opened sweet shop which features coffee specialties’, shakes and smoothies, crepes, paninis, wraps and salads to name just a few of the tempting items on the menu. Alexa is Paola’s daughter. The Latin/French influence is gently apparent in the butter croissant/ baguette sandwiches...and be sure and ask Edwardo why all the employees are female. Eduardo is the only male on the premises. “I thought his would appeal to the ladies,” he noted when N 2 N dropped by. It does indeed. Reasonable prices, lots of variety and even a kids’ menu! 3521 Ridge Road, Lansing, Il 708-889-6235. ***

BATIK EASTER EGGS
The egg decorating method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with wax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multicolored pattern is built up. How detailed can you get? Try it for yourself!

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are so frustrated. We’ve put in offers for 3 different homes and none were accepted. We are looking for a home in the $400,000 price range and we have about $30,000 down payment. We are good buyers. Our Realtor has given us his excuses, what are yours? Answer: We understand the frustration you are going through. But, your frustration is blurring the facts as you see them. Your Realtor is not offering excuses, she is giving you the facts. You did not get the home you bid on because you didn’t produce the best offer. Your $30,000 down payment equates to only about 8%. Buyers are coming in with 20% down payments to cash offers on these homes. Also in this current market, sellers are choosy about the type of financing the buyers are obtaining, preferring conventional financing over government backed loans. For years, in a buyers market, sellers caved to buyer lower offers, ridiculous home inspection demands and accepted offers from buyers who just barely qualified to purchase a home. The times have changed. It is now not just a seller’s market; it is an extremely strong seller’s market. Buyers are allowing sellers to stay in their home after
closing, free, for weeks, just to sweeten their offer. Some buyers are waiving the home inspections and buying the home “as-is.” Many more buyers are now offering $20-$50,000 over asking price to seal the deal. These are only a few of the contract sweeteners buyers are offering the sellers. It’s a cruel market if you are a buyer. The irony here is that many sellers who received top dollar when they sold their home, are upset when they have to pay top dollar to buy a home! Speak to your Realtor about different ways to make your offer more appealing. Keep in mind, buying or selling a home without Realtor representation is not a wise move. Speaking Of Seniors
Helped 82-Year-Old Dyer Client WOODROW WILCOX On April 6, 2022, I wrote a letter to a hospital in northwest Indiana to help a senior citizen client who lives in Dyer, Indiana. The bill from the hospital was delivered to me the night before that by Maha in our Schererville office. It was another case of Medicare failing to send the claim information to the senior’s insurance company. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the hospital. I am confident that the bill for $99 will be resolved because the hospital involved has a good record of cooperating with me. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $99.00 on Guarantor Number XXXXXX for services rendered on 11/16/21. I phoned the patient’s secondary insurer to learn what it knew of this bill. It reported that Medicare never sent this claim to it. That is not the fault of the patient.
To fix this problem as fast as possible, please send both the original billing information and the Medicare EOB about this claim to the secondary insurer at the following address. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps our clients with such Medicare related billing matters to demonstrate our commitment to treat our senior citizen clients well. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why don’t you switch to an agency that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN We all hope for long, healthy lives. But there’s a serious “side effect” of longevity – the possibility of outliving our money. How can you help prevent this? It’s useful to know the seriousness of the threat. Consider this: About 41% of all U.S. homes in which the head of the household is between 35 and 64 are projected to run short of money in retirement, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. While this statistic indicates a cause for concern, it certainly doesn’t mean that you are necessarily headed for trouble – because there’s a lot you can do to help build and manage enough resources to last a lifetime. Here are a few suggestions: Consider your estimated longevity. On average, a 65-yearold man can expect to live another 17 years, while a 65-yearold woman can anticipate about 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Of course, you’ll want to take into account your health and family history of longevity to arrive at a reasonable estimate. You can then use this figure to help determine how much money you’ll eventually need. To play it safe, you might even want to try to build an income stream that can last beyond your estimated lifespan, possibly up to age 90. Don’t overlook health care costs. When budgeting for retirement, allow enough for your health care expenses, which can be considerable. Even with Medicare, you can expect to spend anywhere from $4,500 to $6,500 per year, per person, for traditional medical costs. Also, you may want to prepare for two to three years of long-term care expenses, which currently range from about $50,000 per year for home health care to over $100,000 per year for a private room in a nursing home. Keep building assets for retirement. While you’re working,
constantly try to put away as much money as possible for your retirement years. Each year your salary goes up, increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. You may also want to contribute to an IRA, depending on your goals. And within your retirement savings, make sure you devote a reasonable percentage of your investment dollars to growth-oriented vehicles that align with your goals and risk tolerance. Seek out sources of guaranteed income. As a retiree, you will receive Social Security benefits – and the longer you wait before claiming them, the bigger your monthly checks will be. But you might also consider investments that can provide a source of income you can’t outlive, such as annuities. Revisit your strategy before you retire. As you near retirement, you may want to review your investment strategy, possibly adjusting your risk level so that your portfolio would be somewhat less susceptible to market volatility. This is also a good time to review your spending needs in retirement. Maintain a reasonable withdrawal rate. Once you are retired, you’ll likely need to start withdrawing from your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts. To avoid taking out too much money too early in your retirement, you’ll need to set a reasonable, sustainable withdrawal rate based on your assets, age and retirement lifestyle. A financial advisor can help you determine an appropriate rate. It will take dedication and determination to help ensure your money doesn’t run out during your lifetime. But you’d probably agree that it’s well worth the effort.
