culminating in a historic journey to the NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament.

The team’s remarkable season, marked by perseverance, teamwork, and outstanding performances, is exemplified by their impressive 34-3 record. Key victories include a decisive triumph in the Midwest District A Championship over Waubonsee CC, with a final score of 94-82. Standout players Quentin Heady and Reggie Abram were recognized for their exceptional performances, earning spots on the District Tournament All-Tournament Team, while Jemel Jones secured the title of Tournament MVP.

Advancing to the NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament, SSC continued its winning streak, securing victories against formidable opponents. In an exhilarating journey to the championship game, the team displayed their skill and determination, ultimately securing the title of National Runner-Up. Notable individual achievements and recognitions further highlight the team’s excellence. Head Coach Pigatti was honored as the Midwest District A Coach of the Year, a testament to his leadership and dedication. Jemel Jones, named Region IV Player of the Year, achieved remarkable milestones, including scoring over 1000 points in the season and leading college basketball. Quentin Heady and Julius Byrd were also recognized for their exceptional contributions, earning spots on the Region IV 1st and 2nd teams, respectively.

Throughout the season, SSC Men’s Basketball Team achieved numerous milestones, including Coach Pigatti’s 500th career win and the team’s 64th consecutive home game victory. Their consistent

dominance in college basketball is reflected in their impressive rankings, finishing the regular season ranked #3 in the country. Additionally, SSC holds the distinction of being the winningest basketball program in college basketball over the past 18 seasons.

“It was quite the season. Our players accomplished a lot this season. I am very proud of their commitment, work ethic and their ability to overcome a lot of adversity this season. To get to the National Championship game was quite an accomplishment. We had a lot of accolades this season, but more importantly was their ability to come together as a team and grow as young men. The 2023-24 Men’s Basketball team has a lot to be proud of.”

South Suburban College congratulates the Men’s Basketball Team on their outstanding season and looks forward to continued success in the years to come.

Cook County – Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi urges veterans in Cook County to apply for property tax–saving exemptions this spring.

In the coming weeks, the Assessor’s Office will participate in several events for veterans, during which interested applicants can learn more about which exemptions they may be eligible to receive. Additionally, veterans who have been mailed booklets from the Assessor’s Office with renewal applications are reminded that they must return those booklets by April 26.

“Veterans with significant service-related disabilities face heightened obstacles to homeownership in Cook County and across the nation,” said Assessor Kaegi. “I’m proud to offer these exemptions in order to help ease that burden.”

The Assessor’s Office administers two exemptions for veterans: The Veterans with Disabilities Exemption is for veterans with a service-connected disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The exemption reduces the equalized assessed value (EAV) on the primary residence of a veteran with a disability, very likely lowering the tax bill. Veterans who are 70% or more disabled receive an EAV reduction of $250,000, and because of this can be totally exempt from property taxes.

Veterans must renew annually, except for those who are rated 100% disabled and classified as “totally and permanently disabled” by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They are automatically renewed once the 100% rating and the “total and permanent” status is registered with the Assessor’s office.

The Returning Veterans Exemption is for veterans returning from active duty in an armed conflict involving the armed forces of the United States. They are eligible to receive a $5,000

reduction in the equalized assessed value of their property only for each taxable year in which they return and the year after.

In the coming weeks, the Assessor’s

5 Steps to Get Your Yard Ready for Spring

(Family Features) As the weather begins to warm and days get longer, it’s important to begin preparing your yard for a healthy growing season. While factors like climate, soil type and grass type can all impact how your yard grows, there are a few steps you can take during the spring months to help your lawn thrive.

From dethatching and aerating to fertilizing and mowing, tackling these simple chores can help ensure your yard looks its best and is prepared to fight off seasonal weeds, disease and drought.

Tune Your Mower

Before it’s time for the first mowing of the season, inspect your mower and perform any routine maintenance necessary. That goes beyond sharpening, or replacing, the blade, and includes changing the oil, spark plugs and filter as well as filling with a fresh tank of gas.

Loosen the Thatch Layer

While it’s important to avoid working on your lawn until after the final freeze to avoid damaging the grass, raking your yard with a spring tine rake to loosen thatch - the layer of leaves, roots and dead grass that builds up between live grass and soil - before the first mow is equally important. Be sure to rake when the soil is dry; if it’s too soft or muddy, you may pull up healthy grass crowns.

Combat Compacted Soil

If your soil has become compacted - likely

You’ve probably heard stories about fortunate investors who “get in the ground floor” of a new, hot company and quickly make a fortune. But while these things may happen, they are exceedingly rare and often depend on hard-to-duplicate circumstances — and they really don’t represent a viable way of investing for one’s goals. A far more tried-and-true approach is the “slow-andsteady” method. To follow this strategy, consider these suggestions:

• Start small — and add more when you can. When you’re first starting out in the working world, you may not have a lot of extra money with which to invest, especially if you’re carrying student loan debt. But one of the key advantages of the slow-andsteady method is that it does not require large investment sums to get going. If you can afford to put away even $50 or $100 a month into individual stocks or mutual funds, month after month, you may be surprised and pleased at how your account can grow. And when your salary goes up, you can put away more money each month.

• Take advantage of an employer’s retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar tax-advantaged retirement plan, try to take full advantage of it. Again, if you’re just beginning your career, you may not be able to put away much in this type of plan, but even a small amount is better than nothing. And as soon as you can possibly afford it, try to put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. These types of plans can offer some key benefits — and perhaps the biggest one is that investing is automatic, in that the money is moved directly from your paycheck into the investments you’ve chosen within your 401(k) or other plan.

• Be prepared for downturns. The financial markets will always experience ups and downs. So, you need to be prepared for those times when your investment statements may show negative results. By understanding that these downturns are a normal part of the investment environment, you can avoid overreactions, such as selling quality investments with good fundamentals just because their price has temporarily dropped.

• Chart your progress regularly. A key element of a slow-and-steady investment approach is knowing how well it’s working. But it’s important to measure your progress in a way that makes sense for you. So, for example, instead of measuring your portfolio’s performance against that of an external stock market index, such as the S&P 500, you may want to assess where you are today versus one year ago, or whether the overall progress you’re making is sufficient to help you meet the financial goals you’ve set for yourself well into the future. Another reason not to use a market index as a measuring tool is that the index only looks at a certain pool of investments, which, in the case of the S&P 500, is simply the largest companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges. But long-term investors try to own a range of assets — U.S. and foreign stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit, and so on.

“Slow and steady” may not sound like an exciting approach to investing. But it’s often the case that a little less excitement, and a lot more diligence, can prove to be quite effective.

Pace Bus is Hiring at South Suburban College

South Holland, IL – South Suburban College (SSC) and Pace Bus are pleased to announce another pre-hiring event to provide a free Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit course for the next generation of professional bus operators in the Chicago Southland region. The college and transportation agency will offer a customized two-week course to assist qualified applicants in obtaining their CDL permit. To remove financial barriers for students to pursue and complete the program actively, Pace will cover the costs of tuition, training, books, fees, and other expenses associated with the program. In addition, SSC, in partnership with the Workforce Equity Initiative Grant, will provide a completion incentive for participants who complete the two-week course.

including application completion, an assessment questionnaire, and a background check. All candidates must bring a valid Illinois driver’s license and a DMV or Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) (also called Driving Record Abstracts in Illinois) with no more than two infractions or tickets in the last five years. Candidates are responsible for the cost of the MVR, which is $20.

the effect of heavy foot traffic - and is too dense for water, air and other nutrients to reach the roots of your grass, aerating can help break it up and reduce thatch. A core, or plug, aerator can introduce tiny holes into your soil by removing plugs of grass and soil, which lets nutrients more easily reach the roots. An added bonus, the plugs can decompose on top of your grass, supplying more nutrients.

Fill in Bare Spots

If your lawn is looking sparse, overseeding, which involves spreading grass seed over your existing lawn, can help fill in bare spots. Be sure to choose the right type of seed for your climate and soil type to ensure proper growth. Applying a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer at the same time can provide additional nutrients that are important for promoting healthy growth.

Start Seasonal Mowing

When the ground is dry enough and your grass is long enough to require cutting, begin seasonal mowing. Be sure to use proper techniques, including varying your mowing direction each time to avoid creating patterns or ruts, and avoid cutting grass too low, which can make the lawn more susceptible to weeds and drought stress. In general, never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Find more tips to help get your yard ready for warm weather at eLivingtoday.com.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., SSC will host a pre-hiring event for job seekers to meet with Pace staff. During the 3-hour event, applicants will complete a screening process in the MB Financial Bank Room on SSC’s Main Campus,

Assessment results will be available 2-4 days after the event when candidates must complete an Illinois Department of Transportation physical and drug screening. Pace Bus will cover the cost of these screenings. Candidates who pass these screenings will be enrolled in a training course that will take place at SSC’s Main Campus. Qualified candidates who complete the two-week course will transition to six-week on-the-job training with Pace.

For more information or to register for the CDL Class B licensure program with SSC and Pace, please contact SSC’s Continuing Education Program at (708) 596-2000, ext. 5723.

Jesus says in Chapter 9 of the Biblical book of Luke: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

What does Jesus mean when he says we must take up our cross?

When Jesus carried the cross through Jerusalem to the place where he would ultimately die, the cross was certainly a physical burden for Him. But Jesus promises us in Matthew 11:30 that his “yoke is easy and [his] burden is light,” so Jesus isn’t talking about a heavy physical or mental burden he’s asking us to bear — because he’s already borne the weight of our sin.

The cross in Jesus’ day was used for one purpose: death. Dying on a cross was an agonizingly painful and public way to die. The same way the cross was used to put Jesus and others to death thousands of years ago, we are also to put to death our sinful thoughts, words, and actions.

Picking up our cross every day means actively killing the sin in our lives on a daily basis.

We wield this death-bringing power not of our own strength. Because of Jesus’ sin-killing death and resurrection, we have the power of the Holy Spirit (who is God Himself) to stare our sin in the face and choose a better way — God’s way.

The English Puritan John Owen once said, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” Through the power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, we have the power to daily take up our cross and crucify our sinfulness. Jesus has made the ultimate sacrifice and given us power over our sin. Now, He calls us to use that power to sacrifice our sins every day.

SOLUTIONS

Question: We are considering selling our home. What are some things we can do to improve our odds of selling faster and for more money?

Answer: The average home in the U.S. contains 300,000 items, and 25 percent of Americans claim to have a “clutter” problem. A cluttered home appears disorganized and cramped — not ideal to entice potential buyers.

Cleaning your home goes hand-in-hand with decluttering to create a positive first impression. A clean home enhances the overall appeal and signals to buyers the property is in good condition, potentially increasing their willingness to make an offer. A house should ‘sparkle’ for a showing.

Repairing minor drywall problems presents a well-maintained and move-in ready appearance to potential buyers. Even minor imperfections can raise concerns about the overall condition of the property, deterring buyers or giving them leverage to negotiate a lower price.

Cleaning carpets is crucial to enhance the overall appearance and freshness of a home. Clean carpets eliminate odors and allergens, creating a more inviting and comfortable environment that is more likely to appeal to prospective buyers.

Touching up or repainting problem walls and woodwork before putting your house on the market can significantly improve the

overall aesthetics of your home and give the impression of a well-maintained property. Remove personal items like collectibles, memorabilia, religious artifacts, political signs and photos, to neutralize your home. Take pictures off the refrigerator and walls, as it helps people picture themselves living there and helps a space look less cluttered. Never clutter a Kitchen!

Improve the landscaping before a showing to enhance the overall curb appeal of the property. A well-maintained and attractive outdoor space signals to potential buyers the property has been cared for, increasing its desirability. The outside of the house is the first thing people see when they drive up. It’s crucial to a buyer’s first impression.

A sparkling clean home that looks well cared for will demand more money than a home that looks like it needs work. Remember, a lot of small repairs add up in a buyer’s mind.

Giannoulias Launches Statewide Organ and Tissue Donor Registration Campaign

Marking the beginning of National Donate Life Month, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias unveiled the state’s annual organ and tissue donor ad campaign, which encourages Illinoisans to sign up for the donor registry.

“More than 4,000 Illinois residents are currently waiting for a transplant, including many whose lives depend on the availability of a suitable organ,” Giannoulias said. “The month of April presents an opportunity to highlight how someone’s decision to take a moment to sign up will tangibly save lives and why it’s so important to encourage more people to register as donors.”

The campaign features a public service announcement (PSA) that urges Illinoisans to enroll in the Secretary of State’s Organ and Tissue Donor Registry by showcasing Tonisha Daniel of south suburban Dolton, who received a lifesaving liver transplant after waiting over

a year. Television and social media ads will run statewide throughout the month. The PSA features the song “The Scientist” by Coldplay. Currently, 6.5 million Illinoisans are registered with the state’s donor registry. Approximately 4,000 people are on the transplant waiting list. Of those individuals, about 300 die waiting for a transplant every year. A single donor can save or improve the lives of up to 25 people.

To become a donor, Illinoisans can register with the Secretary of State’s Organ and Tissue Donor Registry by visiting www.LifeGoesOn. com, calling 800-210-2106 or signing up at a DMV facility. The entire process takes less than five minutes.

Donate Life Illinois partners include Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, Eversight, Mid-America Transplant Services and the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois.

5 Ways to Support Underappreciated Professionals

maintenance professionals who are among the first to arrive for work each day. The campaign includes more than 40 events globally where community members can engage with and personally thank custodians who are making an everyday difference behind the scenes.

Recognize Milestones

Write Thank You Notes

In today’s digital world, handwritten notes are a novelty. The times may be changing, but the impression a thoughtful handwritten message leaves behind hasn’t changed at all. Keep a supply of blank notecards so you can offer notes to those who make a difference in your life. The sentiments don’t need to be long; a simple expression of gratitude is enough to brighten someone’s day.

Participate in Appreciation Events

You might receive information from local schools or businesses about opportunities to support maintenance staff, such as hosting meals or helping with cleanup in classrooms or offices. Finding opportunities to support underappreciated custodial staff can allow community members to show thanks in meaningful ways.

For example, Rubbermaid Commercial Products is hosting a Behind the Scenes of Clean Campaign this fall to elevate, recognize and thank cleaning and facility

Often, those in custodial roles blend into the fabric of everyday life. They’re rarely the focal point of celebrations, but often make it possible for others to honor special occasions. Make a point to know about the underappreciated professionals in your life, so you can recognize events like birthdays, work anniversaries and other dates that hold special personal meaning.

Do Your Part

Think about what small steps you can take to make unsung heroes’ jobs easier. That might mean picking up after yourself or cleaning up a mess in your workspace. It could involve wiping down your table after lunch. Little gestures can add up to a big difference.

Lead By Example

You don’t need to wait for others to join you in recognizing workers whose impacts are made behind the scenes. Speaking up and taking action can serve as a positive example for those around you. You can even take the lead and organize an effort to recognize individuals who rarely receive thanks, such as the custodian at your office or the janitorial team at your favorite retailer.

On March 14, 2024, I phoned Medicare with a client to get an important fact before I wrote a letter to a medical biller.

With some editing to protect the client’s privacy, here is the letter that I sent to the medical billing firm.

Our client and her husband sent to our office a bill from your firm for our review. Your bill to our client is dated 1/31/2024 and seeks a balance of $330 on Guarantor Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on 11/06/23.

I investigated this and found that your firm filed the claim INCORRECTLY with Medicare. The Medicare EOB that you got from Medicare should have exactly the same information as the Medicare Summary Notice that the client got. Check footnote “A” on the claim for the $330 original billing under Claim XX-XXXXX-XXX-XXX. The

Tom “Moe” Modrowski, of St. John, IN, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2024, at the age of 67, leaving a void in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Loving husband of Kimberly A. Modrowski, nee Rath. Devoted father of Kristin (Frank) Kantroski, Kellee (Chris) Wyzgowski and Katye (Sean) McDonald. Born to Art and Anne Modrowski in East Chicago, IN, Tom was the sixth of seven children. He was proud of his Catholic, Croatian-Polish family and spoke with great admiration of his upbringing on White Oak Ave in Roxanna. He attended East Chicago Roosevelt High School, and went on to Wabash College where he played football and baseball on an athletic scholarship, majored in mathematics and formed lifelong friendships that transcended time and space. It is here he would meet the love of his life, a girl from southern Indiana, named Kim, whom he affectionately called “Kimbo” or “Bobo”. Together they raised their family, while his career blossomed, and for 45 years they were inseparable.

in all situations, and his love of pancakes, homemade bread and beef barley soup. He was a great man with great friends and a great family. He loved his life and everyone who was part of it. A steel giant. A Little Giant. A gentle giant. Rest in peace sweet husband, father, brother and friend.

footnote explains that the service was denied because your firm filed the claim as an “Annual Wellness Visit” when it should have been filed as a “Welcome to Medicare” visit. Please, refile the claim properly.

The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This agency helps clients with such billing problems without charge to demonstrate that we really do care for our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give such a high level of customer service, why not switch to one that does –like this one.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book

SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

There is nothing he was more proud of than his three daughters and their families. As a young father, he effortlessly embraced girl dad life. He studied how to French braid hair, smoothed out bumps in ponytails, and painted nails. He famously learned a pair of jeans cost more than $20, built jewelry boxes for Christmas gifts, and taught himself to play the piano to participate in recital duets. He helped with math homework, coached all the sports teams and never missed an opportunity to chant “Girl Power!” Despite all his career accomplishments, “Papa” was his greatest title and his 10 grandchildren were the light of his life. You could usually find him eating a Dilly Bar by the pool, with a soaking wet child on his lap, while taking a conference call, organizing a wiffle ball game and thinking about making popcorn on the stove for a movie night sleepover.

Tom’s superpower was making you feel like the most important person in the room, and somehow he had time for everyone and everything. He never missed a game, recital, or a play, a business meeting, a tee time, a dinner with friends, a vacation or a birthday party. He was the most patient, humble, selfless, kind and loving man, enamored only by all the wonderful people in his life. He will be remembered for his big group hugs, an uncanny ability to spread joy

Watch Your Conversation

Words are extremely powerful and capable of shaping our emotions, thoughts, actions, and even our faith. It doesn’t matter whether they come from loved ones or colleagues in the workplace. The words we hear can have a profound impact on us. Hearing kind, supportive, positive words can be uplifting to us, motivating us to succeed and thrive. Positive words can fuel our motivation and strengthen us in every aspect of life.

Conversely, negative words can cripple us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually while hindering our progress. When we are recipients of someone’s criticism, humiliation, belittling, or demeaning words it creates in us negative thoughts, drains our energy, and decreases our faith and hope. We can choose to accept or repel what someone says, however, often, we overlook the impact of our self-talk. It can be a greater influence over our wellbeing than words received from others. The conversations we have with ourselves can either propel us forward or hold us back.

The conversation we say to ourselves can make or break us faster than what someone else says to us. We can become our own best friend or worst enemy. Most would defend themselves against negative words and comments from others but won’t stand up to themselves when they start tearing themselves down. We engage in more negative conversations with ourselves than anyone else. Simple negative conversations or phrases such as “I can’t”, “It won’t work”, “I’m not good enough”, or “This will never improve” can paralyze your progress.

It is vital to be mindful of the words we choose to express to ourselves. Yet, while we need to stay attuned to the words of others, we need to defend ourselves against our internal criticisms and negative words. The conversations we have with ourselves are constantly playing in our minds. We can choose to fill our minds with positive affirmations and encouragement, or with negative self-talk which leads to self-doubt and inability.

Physically, our internal dialogue can affect our energy levels and physical health. For

example, telling ourselves “I can’t do it” may lead to feelings of fatigue and depression. On the other hand, a positive statement like “I am capable” can boost our confidence and energize us.

Mentally, our words influence our beliefs. Negative self-talk can limit and hold us back. Feeding yourself positive self-affirmations can open new possibilities and opportunities for personal development. The words we say to ourselves are accepted by our brain until we tell it something different. Therefore, it’s necessary to control what you tell yourself.

Emotionally, our conversation shapes our mood and outlook on life. Negative self-talk can lead to feelings of sadness, anxiety, or worthlessness, while positive conversations can cultivate feelings of joy, confidence, and selfworth. When you tell yourself “I’m not good enough” it can tear down your self-esteem, conversely saying “I am capable and can succeed” will empower you.

Spiritually, our self-talk impacts our faith. When we’re negative, we lose our sense of purpose, it breeds doubt and disconnects us from our spiritual beliefs. Opposite, if we stay focused on uplifting bible verses, build a deeper relationship with God, and through prayer, we can develop peace and contentment within ourselves. Reading bible verses daily with prayer can fill our minds with words of encouragement, kindness, and love for God, our neighbors, and ourselves.

The conversations we have with ourselves can be profound in all aspects of our lives. We must be mindful of the words we say to ourselves. Positive self-talk is uplifting, and motivational, and can empower us to overcome challenges and difficulties. As the Bible reminds us in Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Decide today what type of conversations you will have with yourself. Be mindful of the words you use to transform your life for the better. Y? Why Not!

IRS kicks off annual Dirty Dozen with warning about phishing and smishing scams

WASHINGTON —The Internal Revenue Service today kicked off the annual Dirty Dozen list with a warning for taxpayers to be aware of evolving phishing and smishing scams designed to steal sensitive taxpayer information.

With taxpayers continuing to be bombarded by email and text scams, the IRS and the Security Summit partners warned individuals and businesses to remain vigilant against these attacks. Fraudsters and identity thieves attempt to trick the recipient into clicking a suspicious link, filling out personal and financial information or downloading a malware file onto their computer.

“Scammers are relentless in their attempts to obtain sensitive financial and personal information, and impersonating the IRS remains a favorite tactic,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “People can be anxious to get the latest information about their refund or other tax issues, so scammers frequently try using the IRS as a way to trick people. The IRS urges people to be extra cautious about unsolicited messages and avoid clicking any links in an unsolicited email or text if they are uncertain.”

Started in 2002, the IRS’ annual Dirty Dozen campaign lists 12 scams and schemes that put taxpayers, businesses and the tax professional community at risk of losing money, personal information, data and more. While the Dirty Dozen is not a legal document or a formal listing of agency enforcement priorities, the education effort is designed to raise awareness and protect taxpayers and tax pros from common tax scams and schemes.

As a member of the Security Summit, the IRS has worked with state tax agencies and the nation’s tax industry for nine years to cooperatively implement a variety of internal security measures to protect taxpayers. The collaborative effort by the Summit partners also has focused on educating taxpayers about scams and fraudulent schemes throughout the year, which can lead to tax-related identity theft. Through initiatives like the Dirty Dozen and the Security Summit program, the IRS strives to protect taxpayers, businesses and the tax system from cyber criminals and deceptive activities that seek to extract information and money.

Phish or smish: Don’t take the bait

The IRS continues to see a barrage of email and text scams targeting taxpayers and others. These schemes frequently peak during tax season but they continue throughout the year. Taxpayers face a wide variety of these scams and schemes. And tax professionals, payroll providers and human resource departments remain favorite targets of email and text scams since they have sensitive personal and financial information. One common example remains the “new client” scam that can target tax pros and others.

Posing as a trusted organization, friend or family member remains a common way to target individuals and tax preparers for various scams. Individuals should verify the identity of the sender by using another communication method, for instance, calling a number they independently know to be accurate, not the number provided in the email or text.

The IRS initiates most contacts through regular mail and will never initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text or social media regarding a bill or tax refund.

What to do

Individuals should never respond to taxrelated phishing or smishing or click on the URL link. Instead, report all unsolicited email - including the full email headers - claiming to be from the IRS or an IRS-related function to phishing@irs.gov. If someone experienced any monetary losses due to an IRS-related scam incident, they should report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), the Federal Trade Commission and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

If a taxpayer receives an email claiming to be from the IRS that contains a request for personal information, taxes associated with a large investment, inheritance or lottery.

· Don’t reply.

· Don’t open any attachments. They can contain malicious code that may infect the computer or mobile phone.

· Don’t click on any links. If a taxpayer inadvertently clicked on links in a suspicious email or website and entered confidential information, visit the IRS’ identity protection page.

· Send the full email headers or forward the email as-is to phishing@irs.gov. Don’t forward screenshots or scanned images of emails because this removes valuable information.

· Delete the original email.

If a taxpayer receives a text claiming to be from the IRS that contains a request for personal information, taxes associated with a large investment, inheritance or lottery.

· Don’t reply.

· Don’t open any attachments. They can contain malicious code that may infect the computer or mobile phone.

· Don’t click on any links. If a taxpayer clicked on links in a suspicious SMS and entered confidential information, they should visit Identity Theft Central.

· Report the message to 7726 (SPAM).

· Include both the Caller ID and the message body in an email and send to phishing@irs. gov. Copy the Caller ID from the message by pressing and holding on the body of the text message, then select Copy, paste into the email. If the taxpayer is unable to copy the Caller ID or message body, forward a screenshot of the message.

· Delete the original text.

· For more information see the IRS video on fake IRS-related text messages.

That means taxpayers and tax professionals should be alert to fake communications posing as legitimate organizations in the tax and financial community, including the IRS and state tax agencies. These messages arrive in the form of unsolicited texts or emails to lure unsuspecting victims to provide valuable personal and financial information that can lead to identity theft. There are two main types:

· Phishing: An email sent by fraudsters claiming to come from the IRS. The email lures the victims into the scam with a variety of ruses such as enticing victims with a phony tax refund or threatening them with false legal or criminal charges for tax fraud.

· Smishing: A text or smartphone SMS message where scammers often use alarming language such as, “Your account has now been put on hold,” or “Unusual Activity Report,” with a bogus “Solutions” link to restore the recipient’s account. Unexpected tax refunds are another potential lure for scam artists.

Never click on any unsolicited communication claiming to be the IRS as it may surreptitiously load malware. It may also be a way for malicious hackers to load ransomware that keeps the legitimate user from accessing their system and files.

In some cases, phishing emails may appear to come from a legitimate sender or organization that has had their email account credentials stolen. Setting up two-factor or multi-factor authentication with their email provider can reduce the risk of individuals having their email account compromised.

The Report Phishing and Online Scams page at IRS.gov provides complete details. The Federal Communications Commission’s Smartphone Security Checker is a useful tool against mobile security threats.

Report fraud

As part of the Dirty Dozen awareness effort regarding tax schemes and unscrupulous tax return preparers, the IRS urges individuals to report those who promote abusive tax practices and tax preparers who intentionally file incorrect returns.

To report a tax scheme or a dishonest tax return preparer individuals should send a completed Form 14242, Report Suspected Abusive Tax Promotions or Preparers, (along with any supporting materials) via mail or fax to the IRS Lead Development Center in the Office of Promoter Investigations.

Mail: Internal Revenue Service Lead Development Center Stop MS5040 24000 Avila Road

Laguna Niguel, California 92677 3405

Fax: 877-477-9135

Taxpayers and tax professionals can also submit this information to the IRS Whistleblower Office, where they may be eligible for a reward.

For details, refer to the sections on Abusive Tax Schemes and Abusive Tax Return Preparers.
