Exhibition of Artwork by Jewlya Sturtevant on Display in SSC Dulgar Gallery The South Suburban College (SSC) Art & Design Department is presenting an exhibition of work by artist Jewlya Sturtevant entitled “How to Turn into a Frog” in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery on the first floor of the Main Campus. Her work is available for viewing from March 13 through April 20, 2023. A closing reception will be held on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Jewlya Sturtevant is a Contemporary American Artist working in Northwest Indiana. She creates work known for its visceral and surrealist approach to depicting the figure. Her work addresses themes relating to the political and cultural phenomena of the female. Her practice began six years ago and includes painting, drawing, and sculpture. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University (IU) in 2022. One of her paintings remains in the permanent collection at the IU Northwest campus in Gary, Indiana.

The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. Masks and social distancing are optional. The SSC Dulgar Gallery is open Monday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 – 9 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. All SSC art galleries are closed on weekends and college holidays. Flossmoor Fire Department to receive more than $25,000 thanks to support from Harris With the support of State Senator Napoleon Harris, the Village of Flossmoor Fire Department will receive more than $25,000 for the purchase of small firefighting and ambulance equipment.

“Firefighters are some of the first to respond to our neighborhood crises and it is imperative that they receive the necessary funding to ensure safety throughout our communities,” said Harris (D-Harvey). “It is vital that we support these dedicated professionals to defend those in need as they work tirelessly to save lives.”

The Small Equipment Grant Program is an innovative approach to a problem that has long caused difficulties for fire departments and not-for-profit ambulance services in Illinois, particularly those that face hardships in generating the necessary revenue for small equipment. The purpose is to allow eligible applicants the opportunity to purchase small equipment that they may otherwise not be able to purchase.

The Village of Flossmoor Fire Department will receive $25,785 in state funding to help purchase new firefighting and ambulance equipment.

Most Illinois fire departments, fire protections districts, township fire departments and stand-alone, not-for-profit ambulance service providers were eligible to apply. All fire departments, fire protections districts and township fire department applicants were required to have participated in the National Fire Incident Reporting System for a minimum of two years prior to applying.

SSC’s Criminal Justice Program Hosted “Dogs & Drones” Event for National Criminal Justice Month South Holland, IL–The South Suburban College’s (SSC) Criminal Justice Program recently presented a program entitled “Dogs & Drones” for National Criminal Justice Month.

The event, held on March 9 at the college, included a drone demonstration by the Burr Ridge Police Department and Federal Aviation Administration Drone Pro Keenan Newton.

In addition, the program on “Dogs” featured police dog Louie from the Worth Illinois Police Department and police dog Hatty from the Cook County State Attorney’s Office. The area high schools were invited to bring up to 12 students plus a chaperone.

The United States Congress established National Criminal Justice Month in 2006; March is National Criminal Justice Month. Its purpose is to promote societal awareness around the causes and consequences of crime and strategies for preventing and responding to crime. The American Academy for Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) also recognizes March as National Criminal Justice Month.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

by Janice R Newman The best way to accomplish your goals is to stretch your behavioral and psychological boundaries to GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. This can be challenging, but it is often necessary to achieve personal and professional growth and reach your full potential. Changes must be made to get out of the comfort zone depending on the individual or their goals. If it’s something that you’ve never done before, then you must go beyond your comfort zone to obtain it.

The comfort zone is your behavioral and psychological boundaries that provide a safe haven from anxiety, and fear, and keeps you in control of the situation. The comfort zone allows you to perform with little risk at a low anxiety level. It reminds me of the adage “no pain…no gain”. If there’s no pain, anxiety, or fear, then you’re probably not going outside of your comfort zone. Importantly, you’re not making any changes that are necessary to reach your goals or new heights of performance.

Biblically, this reminds me of Abraham with his journey. In Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV) “Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” This journey required Abraham to step out of his comfort zone and leave behind his familiar surroundings and way of life. Despite the challenges and uncertainties that lay ahead, Abraham trusted God’s guidance and set out on this journey. If Abraham stayed in his town with his familiar surroundings, his entire path would have been vastly different.

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be scary and uneasy and it prevents people from pursuing their goals. It can be viewed

as anxiety-ridden, exhausting, overwhelming, and intimidating.

Here are a few simple ways to get out of your comfort zone.

1. Identify your strength. By identifying your strength, you can adjust your goals to align with your strengths and push yourself beyond your comfort zone. This will help you gain confidence and learn from your experiences, overcome your fears, and expand your horizons.

2. Utilize small steps. By utilizing small steps, you can better manage your anxiety and discomfort level. When you have anxiety, try to reframe your thoughts, and focus on the benefits of stepping outside your comfort zone.

3. Surround yourself with supportive people. Seek out people who will encourage and support you as you venture into the unknown and try new things. Having a support system can make a big difference.

Utilize bible verses that provide comfort and build faith. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD you God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 ESV) Remember that getting out of your comfort zone takes time and effort, but the rewards are often worth it. By taking small steps and challenging yourself, you can achieve your goals and live a more fulfilling life. Abraham’s story shows us that sometimes to achieve our full potential and live out our calling, we need to be willing to step outside of our comfort zone, make the necessary changes, and take bold steps into the unknown to lead toward growth and success. MIKE BUDER This was a painful week for a prospective buyer on one of my listings. She found out after getting her offer accepted that a late payment was made in December on a car loan she cosigned on last year for a relative.

The net result was that her credit score dropped below the level needed for her to get the mortgage approval.

Most people want to be helpful and when a family member or friend who seems to be stable needs a cosigner on a loan the temptation is there to lend a hand.

After all, you know this person. They are responsible, they pay their debts, they are honest. However, situations can change and despite someone’s best intentions, they may not be able to make the payments on time due to illness, job loss or other unforeseen circumstances. And when that happens, the cosigners credit it affected. The other thing to consider is that in most situations where two people are on a loan there is joint and several liability meaning that if one party bails, the other party is on the hook for the full amount of the loan.

If you are considering buying a home now

or in the near future and you are approached by someone wanting you to cosign a loan, you should consider what the worst-case scenario would be. If the worst case is that your credit would be damaged and you would not be able to purchase the property as a result, then you need to consider that as being within the realm of possibility.

Again, most people want to help a person in need, especially a child or close relative who may not have any established credit or who is just getting their start out of college, a divorce, a relocation or the like. In these situations, it’s important to remember that your name and your credit are on the line and if your credit is tarnished, it may take years to recover from the damage.

Humane Indiana Expands Veterinary Clinic to Reach More People and Pets In Need Humane Indiana (HI) has expanded its Estelle Marcus Clinic to include Merrillville in the towns it serves, thanks in part to funding from Legacy Foundation.

All residents of Hammond, Gary, East Chicago, and now Merrillville, can get discounted basic and preventative veterinary care at the clinic, located at 421 45th St in Munster (next door to the HI Adoption Center).

Services available include vaccinations, testing for heartworms and FeLV/FIV, flea and tick prevention, and microchipping.

Participants at the clinic receive the same high-quality care and medications that are offered at area veterinary businesses, with an on-site HI veterinarian overseeing services.

Funding from individual donors helps bridge the gap. Legacy Foundation’s investment helps make this expansion possible.

Donations to support the Clinic and mission of HI are accepted at www.humaneindiana.org.

Residents who live elsewhere in the greater northwest Indiana region can also receive services at Humane Indiana’s clinic if they are income-eligible – including people participating in assistance programs like WIC, SNAP, Medicaid, public housing benefits; disabled veterans, other people receiving disability benefits; and people receiving social security benefits or Medicare.

Owners of pit bulls and pit mixes can also

receive services at Humane Indiana Clinic. A full list of income eligibility criteria is found at www.humaneindiana.org, click on Clinic.

Humane Indiana has also added interpreting services to better serve everyone in the Region, so people can receive service in their primary language including Spanish, American Sign Language, or any other language.

“There are many mental and physical health benefits to pet ownership, and they should be available to everyone in our community,” said Clinic Director Kim Ramirez. “By expanding the Clinic’s eligibility, with the community’s support, we can make a big difference in our community’s mental and physical health.”

The clinic was established in 2011 through the generous support of Ms. Estelle Marcus, whose dream was to provide health and wellness services for underserved communities and pets.

Each year HI impacts more than 15,000 animals and 30,000 people in northwest Indiana through HI’s shelter/adoption center, clinic, pet food/supply pantry, foster care, homelessness prevention initiatives, and wildlife rehabilitation center.

JOSH BOOTSMA As of this writing, the global population is estimated at 8,024,277,694. That’s a lot of people. In fact, about 30 babies were born since you started reading this column.

As such, it seems nearly impossible that God could know who we are, much less care about us.

But don’t fear: the global bird population is over 20 times that of the human population.

Yes, you read that correctly: birds. Birds should be very comforting to us.

Jesus says in Luke 12:6, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.” In Matthew 6:26 He says, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

God does not forget the birds. Just watch the Planet Earth BBC series and you’ll see how many odd, beautiful, and unique birds are out there — all of which are fed and looked after by our Lord.

Jesus is explaining that if God cares for the birds this way, how much more will He care for us, human beings that He made in His own image (Genesis 1:27)? God didn’t send Jesus to die for the birds, He sent Him to die for us!

What greater evidence of His love could He provide? If God loves the spring robin pooping on your car, then He most definitely loves, cares for, and wants the best for you!

So the next time you see a finch in your yard, a hummingbird by your flowers, or a hawk high in the sky, remember the words of the century-old hymn: “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

In the financial world, stocks and stockbased mutual funds often get a lot of attention. And deservedly so, because they often form the core of a portfolio. But to help achieve your goals, you may also want to consider a broader array of investments — one of which may be a certificate of deposit (CD).

As you may know, a CD earns interest on a lump sum for a designated period. You can purchase CDs whose maturities range from a few months to 10 or more years.

Generally, the longer-term the CD, the higher the interest rate, although this isn’t always the case.

In recent years, CD rates have been pretty low, reflecting the overall interestrate environment. But now, as the Federal Reserve has repeatedly raised interest rates to combat inflation, CD rates are rising, too. In fact, one-year CDs can currently be found paying in the 5% range — a rate that hasn’t been seen in more than 15 years. Later in 2023, though, if the Fed eases up on rate hikes, or perhaps even starts reversing them, CD rates could fall again.

You can purchase a CD from a bank or buy a “brokered” CD from a financial services provider. The income you receive from a CD may be its main attraction, especially if the rates remain elevated for a while. But there’s another key advantage to owning CDs: They can help diversify a portfolio of stocks and stock mutual funds that are generally more susceptible to movements in the financial markets. A portfolio that contains CDs, as well as bonds and government securities, can help reduce the effects of market volatility.

Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or prevent losses in a declining market.

While adding individual CDs can be valuable, you might get a greater benefit from a more strategic approach known as laddering. You can build a CD ladder by buying a series of CDs that mature at different dates in the future — perhaps one month, three months, six months, nine months and 12 months out, or an even longer-term ladder of one to five years. In either case, as one CD matures, you can use the money if you need it or reinvest it to another “rung” on your ladder. If interest rates are up, the reinvestment option might be appealing, but if the available CD rates are lower than your maturing CDs, you could find better uses for your money. And you’d still have your longer-term CDs, possibly paying higher rates, working for you. You must evaluate whether a CD ladder and the securities held within it are consistent with your investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances.

The amount of space occupied by CDs in your portfolio should depend somewhat on your stage of life. If you’re a long way from retirement, you may want to own a larger percentage of growth-oriented investments.

But once you’re retired and getting more income from your portfolio becomes more important, you might find a greater need for CDs. In any case, CDs may prove useful to your overall financial strategy — so give them some thought.

Giannoulias Awards $21 Million to Combat Carjackings & Vehicle Thefts In an effort to combat the surge of carjackings and motor vehicle thefts in Illinois, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is awarding grants totaling more than $21 million to six police organizations.

The funding originates from the Illinois Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council, which is overseen by Secretary Giannoulias’ office. The Secretary of State’s office convenes regular meetings of council members and awards funding to assist law enforcement entities – including the Secretary of State Police – to combat carjackings and prevent motor vehicle thefts.

“There is no single solution, but these grants give law enforcement needed financial resources, which will provide a greater sense of focus and effort to recover stolen vehicles and prevent carjackings that have been occurring all too frequently throughout our state,” said Giannoulias.

“People doing something so routine as getting in their car and driving shouldn’t have to fear that they’ll be robbed of their vehicle at gunpoint. Working together, we will continue to not only make our roads safer but also our communities, neighborhoods and business districts.”

“ISP’s expressway safety enforcement effort brings together the full force of patrol, investigations, license plate readers, air operations, and other assets,” said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly.

“These grant funds will energize and sustain those efforts to pursue violent offenders and keep reducing violence.”

“Partnership is essential as we work to prevent and investigate vehicular hijackings and motor vehicle thefts,” said Interim CPD Superintendent Eric M. Carter. “This grant funding will help us bolster these efforts and create a safer Chicago.”

“The Illinois Statewide Auto Theft Taskforce (ISATT) will use this money to expand our investigations into crimes related to vehicular hijacking, auto theft, insurance fraud, rogue tow operators and recyclable metal left,” said Secretary of State Police Lieutenant Adam Broshous, Director of ISATT. Lieutenant Broshous noted that nine of the 22 sworn officers that make up ISATT are part of the Illinois Secretary of State Police.

In 2022, there were 1,655 reported carjackings in Chicago, more than triple the amount in 2012, according to city figures.

Meanwhile, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports that Chicago saw auto thefts rise 55% in 2022, an increase greater than every other city in the nation. In 2021, the NICB reported there were 13,856 auto thefts in the city, which increased to 21,516 auto thefts in 2022. Statewide, vehicle thefts rose from 28,557 in 2021 to 40,505 in 2022, according to NICB’s most recent data.

Advocates push for tax credit aimed at increasing affordable housing Lawmakers are considering bills that would create a new tax credit for affordable housing, referred to as the “Build Illinois Homes Tax Credit.”

The legislation, contained in the identical House Bill 2044 and Senate Bill 1737, would mirror a federal program administered by the Illinois Housing Development Authority and Chicago Department of Housing which helps finance affordable housing across Illinois.

The Illinois Housing Council, a non-profit membership association consisting of over 260 businesses and non-profits, has been advocating for the measure’s passage.

“Our state is facing an affordable housing crisis, stemming from years of housing under-production,” Allison Clements, executive director of IHC, testified in a Senate committee. “Our state’s housing deficit has grown 64 percent since 2012, meaning we have more people needing homes than are available.”

A 2023 IHC report showed Illinois still has a deficit of lowincome housing despite the federal program. According to the report, Illinois has lost 13 percent of its low-rent units since 2011.

Additionally, while there are more than 450,000 extremely lowincome renters in Illinois, there are only about 150,000 affordable and available rental units, creating a deficit of about 288,000.

“The dollars have actually filled a critical need but they are only a short-term solution to build affordable housing in Illinois,” Rep. Dagmara Avelar, a Democrat from Bolingbrook and lead sponsor on HB 2044, said in a House committee hearing Thursday. “The long-term, permanent solution is a state tax credit, the Build Illinois Homes Tax Credit that can sustain affordable housing construction over the next 10 years.”

If passed, the Build Illinois credit would cost the state $35 million annually for 10 years, which advocates say would help increase the number of housing units by 3,500 each year. Once investors construct the housing developments, they would be eligible for an income tax credit based on the development area.

Clements emphasized that the state tax credit would only be issued after the construction of a unit is complete and qualified

tenants are moved in.

“Private sector investors, not taxpayers, are going to bear the financial risk of a project not being completed or successful and they closely monitor and oversee each development where these credits are involved,” Clements said in the House committee.

“Because the state tax credit is not claimed by an investor until the affordable housing is successfully built and completed, passing this state tax credit this year would not result in any budget impacts to the state until 2026.”

According to the IHC report, over 20 states currently use tax credits to attract private equity for building more affordable housing. Lawmakers in Kentucky and Ohio are also considering measures to enact such programs.

Gov. JB Pritzker proposed additional funds for housing in his budget address. The program, referred to as “Home Illinois,” would provide for a $50 million increase in homelessness services, including for emergency shelter, short-term rental assistance and the development of new permanent supportive housing units. If implemented, “Home Illinois” would bring the total funding in that area to $350 million.

In his budget address on Feb. 15, the governor estimated over 120,000 people experience homelessness annually and over 76,000 children live in overcrowded shared housing.

“The faces of Illinoisans with no home to go to are not homogenous,” Pritzker said in his budget address. “They include single parents with infants and toddlers, 6th graders trying to complete their homework using toilets as a desk in temporary shared housing, and LGBTQ+ high schoolers who were kicked out of their homes by their parents.”

Too Complicated for Most Seniors WOODROW WILCOX

A client brought medical bill papers to our Schererville office in the shopping center at the northeast corner of U.S. 30 and U.S. 41. That office copied the papers and sent them to me. I reviewed the papers and immediately knew it would be a complicated case. I phoned the client to come to my office to work with me.

I needed the client with me to give permission for me to speak and question for the client on every phone call to comply with federal privacy protection law. The bill and Medicare Summary Notice about the bill showed me that the client’s Medicare file was fouled with false information. The bill was for $975 because Medicare refused to pay anything on it. Until the Medicare file got fixed, our client would continue to get bills like this that Medicare should but wouldn’t cover.

We phoned two offices of Medicare to try to fix the problem. But we had to phone an insurance company and a chiropractor’s office to pursue fixing the Medicare record. The problem was that the insurance company never told Medicare that our client had finished treatment for a car accident in 2021. When our client got treatment in 2023, Medicare refused to pay anything because it thought that the car accident

matter never had been settled. The insurance company never got a final report from the doctor so that it could close its file and notify Medicare to end the car insurance matter.

I know what happened. The insurance company sent money to our client instead of directly to the chiropractor. The chiropractor’s office did not know that it was supposed to notify the insurance company of the ending of treatment of our client.

This system is too complicated for most seniors to work to fix. In addition to this, our client was a little “hard of hearing”. How is a senior on Medicare supposed to know how to fix a “bad info in Medicare file” matter? Fortunately for her, she got her Medicare supplement policy through our agency and I am helping her.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. Answer: Generally speaking, after retirement, the kids are out of the house and larger living spaces are no longer required.

But you must carefully consider how much square footage you’re comfortable with. The biggest mistake we find when couples decide to downsize, is they miss the extra space.

There may only be two of you, but you are not working and will certainly be home more often. We have seen that couples were happier if the home was at least 1200 Sq. ft.

Some of the older buyers are moving into a townhome that provides them with a bit of garden space so they can be outdoors, garden, and enjoy the sunshine.

Although some people enjoy gardening and other outdoor activities in retirement, others are fed up with landscaping and other chores of home ownership. They may welcome the transition to a place with less yard space, less maintenance, and more amenities that are taken care of for them. Condominiums and townhomes fit that bill.

Having restaurants, retail, and other everyday destinations nearby is a major factor in choosing a home. Walkability is important.

With more time on their hands, having the ability to stroll to shops, restaurants, and

entertainment can be considered a luxury.

There may also come a time when it’s not safe to get behind the wheel of a car, and you don’t want to have to rely on someone else to drive you for every errand.

For home buyers anticipating mobility issues as they get older, one of the most important criteria is a one-story home. Older buyers are looking for properties where the living space is on one level. People are taking steps to avoid ... steps. This is a big consideration if you hope to stay in your own home as you age.

If you’re an older buyer purchasing a home away from where your kids live, it’s important to think of the location. It should be a location where people, including your children will want to come and visit and can bring their children and pets.

Keep in mind your expenses. Excessive housing expenses should not keep you from traveling and enjoying life.
