Illinois taxpayers: Get your tax refund faster and avoid costly mistakes with these tips!

As the April 15 filing deadline approaches, the Internal Revenue Service reminds Illinois taxpayers how they can speed up potential tax refunds by preventing common errors on their federal tax returns.

Collect all tax-related paperwork

Taxpayers should collect all key documents, including Forms W-2 and 1099, as well as any supporting paperwork for tax deductions or credits such as educational credits or mortgage interest payments. Additionally, having the previous year’s tax return accessible is advisable as it may be required.

Use electronic filing

The IRS advises taxpayers and their tax advisors use electronic filing methods such as IRS Free File or alternative e-file service providers. The Direct File pilot is available for some taxpayers in 12 states. Electronic filing minimizes mathematical errors and identifies potential tax credits or deductions for which the taxpayer qualifies. It’s essential for taxpayers to carefully review their tax returns to ensure accuracy. Opting for electronic filing and selecting direct deposit is the fastest and safest way to receive a refund.

Ensure filing status is correct

Tax software serves to prevent errors in selecting a tax return filing status. For taxpayers unsure of their filing status, the Interactive Tax Assistant on IRS.gov can assist in choosing the correct status, particularly when multiple statuses might apply.

Make sure names, birthdates and Social Security numbers are correct

Taxpayers must accurately provide the name, date of birth and Social Security number for each dependent listed on their individual income tax return. The SSN and individual’s name should be entered precisely as indicated on the Social Security card. In cases where a dependent or spouse lacks a SSN and is ineligible to obtain one, an assigned Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) should be listed instead of a SSN.

Answer the digital assets question

Everyone who files Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, 1041, 1065, 1120 and 1120S must check one box answering either “Yes” or “No” to the digital asset question. The question must be answered by all taxpayers, not just by those who engaged in a transaction involving digital assets in 2023. Taxpayers must report all income related to digital asset transactions. See IRS.gov Digital Assets | Internal Revenue Service for details on when to check “yes” and how to report the income.

Report all taxable income

Keep in mind that most income is subject to taxation. Failing to accurately report income may result in accrued interest and penalties. This includes various sources of income such as interest earnings, unemployment benefits and income derived from the

service industry, gig economy and digital assets. For further details, consult Publication 525, Taxable and Nontaxable Income.

Make sure banking routing and account numbers are correct

Taxpayers have the option to request direct deposit of a federal refund into one, two or even three accounts. Provide correct banking information: If expecting a refund, ensure the routing and account numbers provided for direct deposit are accurate to avoid delays or misdirected refunds. Additionally, taxpayers can use their refund to buy U.S. Savings Bonds.

Remember to sign and date the return

When submitting a joint return, it is required for both spouses to sign and date the return. If taxpayers are preparing their taxes independently and filing electronically, they need to sign and authenticate their electronic tax return by inputting their adjusted gross income (AGI) from the prior year. Taxpayers can refer to “Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return” for guidance if they have any inquiries.

Ensure address is correct if mailing paper returns

Taxpayers and tax professionals are urged to choose electronic filing whenever possible. However, for those who must submit a paper tax return, it’s essential to verify the accurate mailing address either on IRS.gov or in the instructions provided with Form 1040 to prevent processing delays.

Keep a copy of the tax return

Upon readiness to file, taxpayers should create duplicates of their signed return and any accompanying schedules for their personal records. Maintaining copies can help them prepare future tax returns and figure mathematical computations in the event of filing an amended return. Typically, taxpayers should retain records supporting income, deductions or credits claimed on their tax return until the period of limitations for that specific tax return expires.

Request an extension, if needed

Illinois taxpayers requiring more time to file their taxes can easily request a six-month extension until October 15, thereby avoiding late filing penalties. This extension can be requested either through IRS Free File or by submitting Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, by April 15. It’s important to note that while an extension provides extra time for filing, tax payments are still due on April 15 for most taxpayers.

Alternatively, taxpayers can seek an extension by making a full or partial payment of their estimated income tax and indicating that the payment is for an extension. This can be done using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a debit/credit card or digital wallet. By doing so, taxpayers avoid the necessity of filing a separate extension form and receive a confirmation number for their records.

Diadenko has sold her art works and raised more than $90,000 for Ukrainian causes since the war began. She has donated funds to four organizations: a group that supplies gauze and bandages

One of your important sources of retirement income will likely be Social Security — but when should you start taking it?

You can start collecting Social Security benefits at 62, but your checks will be considerably bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which is likely between 66 and 67. You could even wait until you’re 70, at which point the payments will max out, except for yearly cost-of-living adjustments. But if you need the money, you need the money, even if you’re just 62 or any age before full retirement age.

However, if you have adequate financial resources to meet your monthly needs, whether through earned income, your investment portfolio or a combination of the two, you could have some flexibility in choosing when to take Social Security. In this case, you may want to weigh these considerations:

• Life expectancy – For all of us, it’s one of life’s great mysteries: How long will we live? Of course, we can’t see into the future, so the question can’t be answered with total confidence. But to make an informed decision on when to take Social Security, you don’t need to know your exact lifespan — you just need to make a reasonably good estimate. So, for example, if you’re approaching 62, you’re enjoying excellent health and you have a family history of longevity, you might conclude it’s worth waiting a few years to collect Social Security, so you can receive the bigger payments. Conversely, if your health is questionable and your family has not been fortunate in terms of longevity, you might want to start taking your benefits earlier.

• Employment – You can certainly continue working and still receive Social Security benefits. However, if you’re under

your full retirement age for the entire year, Social Security will deduct $1 from your benefits for every $2 you earn above the annual limit of $22,320. In the year you reach your full retirement age, Social Security will deduct $1 in benefits for every $3 you earn above $59,520. So, you may want to keep these reductions in mind when deciding when to begin accepting benefits. Once you reach your full retirement age, you can earn any amount without losing benefits. (Also, at your full retirement age, Social Security will recalculate your benefit amount to credit you for the months you received reduced benefits because of your excess earnings.)

• Spouse – Spouses can receive two types of Social Security benefits: spousal and survivor. With a spousal benefit, your spouse can receive up to 50% of your full retirement benefits, regardless of when you start taking them. (Your spouse’s benefit can be reduced by the amount of their own retirement benefit and whether they took Social Security before their full retirement age.) But with a survivor benefit, your decision about when to take Social Security can make a big difference. A surviving spouse can receive the larger of their own benefit or 100% of a deceased spouse’s benefit, so if you take benefits early and receive a permanent reduction, your spouse’s survivor benefit may also be reduced for their lifetime.

When to take Social Security is an important — and irrevocable — decision. So, consider all the factors before making your choice.

Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: My friend had a contract on her home. They went through negotiations and the buyer walked away. My friend came down to a price that she thought was fair. Did the buyer just not want the home very badly?

Answer: Without seeing the contract, that’s a tough one to answer. Was the home priced correctly or was it too high for the market to begin with? What condition was the home? What else was negotiated? When selling a home, you need to remember that not only do you want to get the best possible price for your home, you need to make the buyers feel like they have won on some issues that are important to them. No one likes a business deal that seems lopsided in the other persons favor.

table you don’t want to move, etc. One seller even offered the buyer a free puppy.

Another area of accommodation involves the date when the seller will give occupancy to the buyer. The give and take that goes on to determine the occupancy date often provides an opportunity to respond to the needs of the other party. The seller may need additional time after closing or the seller can allow immediate occupancy after closing to the buyer because of the buyer’s situation.

Your, (or your friends) willingness to help in this situation may be appreciated and allow you to gain some other concessions that is more important to you.

The bottom line is…it is a business deal and Both parties Must Win!

high school students who are enrolled in college or trade school in the fall. Job offerings include working at DMVs or at one of the various departments in the Secretary of State’s office.

“The goal of our summer jobs program is to provide a pathway for young people to explore career opportunities, build their skillsets, earn money and make connections through a realworld job experience,” Giannoulias said. “This type of hands-on work also helps with future academic and professional success and can translate into long-term benefits for our

communities.” Along with building job skills for students and learning about state government, the program bolsters the office’s customer service efforts during the busy summer months.

Available positions include work in Secretary of State offices in Chicago, surrounding suburbs, Springfield and downstate facility locations. Pay is $16 per hour for college and trade school students and $25 per hour for specific contractual intern positions for graduate school students.

Interested applicants can apply at www.ilsos. gov/summerjobs and must submit a resume and cover letter explaining their interest in working at the Secretary of State’s office. Applicants may list up to three choices for their preferred work location.

Summer employees can begin their employment as early as May 13.

When negotiating, there are several areas where you can allow the other party to walk away with a win. The most obvious is the agreed upon selling price. If there is a big price gap between you and the buyer, you can either meet their price or give a little on price or on a combination of price and concessions on some other items. These concessions could be appliances, draperies, or that pool

Heart Smart

On its face, “Good Friday” seems like a misnomer.

Jesus was wrongfully convicted, beaten, flogged, and mocked. He died the agonizing death of crucifixion. And he was buried in a stranger’s tomb. Not much about that seems “good,” does it?

Good Friday is good not because of what Jesus endured, but because of what we receive. Every single hardship Jesus Christ endured was for his people — for you and me.

You see, Jesus isn’t like us. He is the Son of God. He didn’t die because of something he did — He died because of everything we have done.

Read these words from Isaiah 53: “But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.”

Jesus carried our wrongdoing, our sin, to the cross. Sin requires payment, and as the old hymn says, “Jesus paid it all,” so that we wouldn’t have to.

But Friday’s good for another reason too: not only has our debt been paid with Jesus’ blood, but Friday isn’t the end of the story!

I love this chorus from Phil Wickham’s song, “Sunday is Coming”:

Friday’s good ‘cause Sunday is coming

Don’t lose hope ‘cause Sunday is coming Devil, you’re done, you better start running

Friday’s good ‘cause Sunday is coming.

Indeed, Resurrection Sunday is coming. The day that Jesus arose and conquered death. For those of us who have accepted his invitation to be his children, we have also conquered death! For the children of God, death will never have the final word in our lives.

This holy week, open your Bible, go to church, and bask in the Goodness of what Jesus has accomplished for you.

The following photos show an approximately 2-yearold Bald Eagle. Only after 5 years, Bald Eagles come into their signature white head and tail. These photos were captured at the Highland Rookery (Cline Ave. Marsh), by photographer and Shopper editor, Alex Ross of Highland.

April is National Stress Awareness Month. Take a breath.

Things to do in the Spring

Spring brings warm weather and showers, but it also brings the opportunity to get out for fun activities, explore your surroundings, and enjoy nature. There are plenty of exciting adventurous activities to do at home, and within a short to middle distance from home for most parts of the country. Withstanding gas and food, there are some delightful free or inexpensive things to do in this vibrant season.

1. Go on a Nature Walk: There is a national or state park typically within 250 miles. Illinois has 54 state parks along with nature preserves to explore for a day trip. Most parks are free or have a low entry daily fee. Check online for discounts or with membership clubs such as AAA Auto Club. Take advantage of the spring weather by going for a stroll in a neighborhood park to observe the blooming flowers or bird watching.

2. Picnic in the Park or Backyard: If you’re going to take a walk in the park, bring a picnic basket lunch. Just don’t share it with Yogi Bear. Pack sandwiches, snacks, fruits, drinks, and a blanket to stretch out on to enjoy the meal while taking in the view and breeze. Eating in the backyard brings a change of scenery and a sense of nature.

3. Attend Outdoor Events: Soon concerts in the parks, outdoor farmer’s markets, car shows, and community festivals will be happening that bring local culture and entertainment for all. Attend other nearby events to sample other cultural events. Parades for Memorial Day and local baseball games are fun outdoor activities for all ages. Minor league games are typically more affordable along with they have special event nights with fireworks, run the bases, or entertainment. Have dinner at home before going to save money or eat out using coupons or apps.

4. Visit Museums and Zoos: Museums and Zoos offer an educational and fun time out. Lions, tigers, and bears…oh my! Museums sometimes offer special free days or check out your local library for potential free or discounted tickets. In

December, I got free entry tickets to Brookfield Zoo from the library. The only cost was parking. Go with friends and split the cost of gas and parking. Bring lunch and eat before going in.

5. Outdoor Sports and Recreation: Besides the nature walk, get out your bike or rollerblades. There are trails for hiking, courts for pickleball or tennis, and fishing on riverbanks for potential activities. The outdoor activities energize our bodies to get them moving again after the long stagnant winter. Go with a friend or family member for bonding time. Do not physically overdo it, and make sure you’re healthy before doing anything strenuous.

6. Spring Cleaning: Not the most fun thing to do, but spring cleaning helps declutter and organize your environment. Remove the old to make room for the new or just clear up space. Open the windows to let in a fresh breeze. Mild weather is a great time to declutter the garage and shed, tune up the lawn mower, and clean/vacuum out the car. Put up the winter clothes and tools. Prep the backyard for spring relaxing areas and grilling.

7. Gardening: Planting flowers or vegetables in a garden can be relaxing, fun, and incredibly rewarding to watch your plants grow and bloom. I always enjoy watching my tomato plants grow along with the anticipation of them ripening so we can eat them. Join a local gardening club or combine gardening work with a neighbor for companionship. Share the fruits of your labor with others as Romans 12:13 states “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

Spring into life by getting out, enjoying the weather, and exploring new activities. Delight yourself and your family in engaging memories with the nature around us. Eat outdoors or take a walk. Savor it all with a selfie for memories. Y?

Bennie & the Jets to Perform in Munster, IN on April 13, 2024

MUNSTER, Ind. – (March 23, 2024) – Greg Ransom is bringing his hit Elton John tribute show “Bennie & the Jets” to Munster High School Auditorium on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Single tickets available on the day of the performance for $30.

For more information, please contact Carolyn Borchardt at 219-932-9795 or cborc86914@aol.com.

“Ransom’s voice, piano-playing and stage demeanor are eerily similar to Elton John’s.”

- Graham Dixon, Midland Reporter Telegram

Greg Ransom began playing the piano at the young age of 10 years old, and has been playing music and performing ever since. In 1995, Ransom (piano, vocals), Dan Moraski (guitar, vocals), Bob Lija (drums, vocals), and Ken Walpurgis (bass) formed Bennie & the Jets – a group dedicated to honoring the life and music of the great Elton John. The international touring act has stunned Elton fans all around the world with their note-fornote covers of his iconic songs and Ransom’s voice that bears an eerie resemblance to Elton John’s. Their concert features

a collection of Elton John’s biggest hits including, but not limited to, “Tiny Dancer,” “Candle In The Wind,” “Rocket Man,” and, of course, “Bennie.” Click Here To View A Video Of Bennie & the Jets.

a quicker and easier way to get the attention of Florida medical firms and their billing firms. Here is the letter that I sent. Dear Representative, I want to connect with the correct department or personnel for filing complaints to protect senior citizens who are billed for medical services INCORRECTLY. Our insurance agency is the largest in the State of Indiana for senior citizen and Medicare related policies and clients. We have over 22,000 clients. A few of our clients move from Indiana to Florida every year. Sometimes, they choose to let us continue to be their agency if the insurance company will let them do that for a few months. Some of our clients get a second home in Florida and visit Florida for the winter months but return to Indiana in the spring. When these people originally from Indiana get medical services in Florida, and the medical billing is messed up, who should I contact at the Florida Attorney General’s office to help our client file a complaint against the Florida medical service provider or its billing firm? To help you understand this problem, I have attached a few of the published articles that I have written. Thank you for your assistance. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online. Speaking Of Seniors Sent Letter to Florida Attorney General WOODROW WILCOX

Scheduled to take place at the prestigious Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park, IL, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, doors will open at 5:00pm for an elegant night filled with dinner, dancing, a silent auction, special awards, and NAACP Image Award Nominee and SSC Alumnus, LaRoyce Hawkins as the keynote speaker.

MODROWSKI

Tom “Moe” Modrowski, of St. John, IN, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2024, at the age of 67, leaving a void in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Loving husband of Kimberly A. Modrowski, nee Rath. Devoted father of Kristin (Frank) Kantroski, Kellee (Chris) Wyzgowski and Katye (Sean) McDonald. Proud papa of Mila, Harry, Dutch Kantroski, Nina, Frannie, Max, Beau Wyzgowski, Lucy, Gwen and Tommy McDonald. Dear brother of Carol (Dr. Henry) Hadidian, Jim (Kristy) Modrowski, Dr. Robert (Laura) Modrowski, Sherri (Mike) Abinanti, Dave (Patty) Modrowski and the late Pam Modrowski. Cherished uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Art and Anne Modrowski.

While the business world will remember Tom as an operational mastermind in steel making and metals processing, his family will remember him as the best husband, father and “Papa” there ever was. Born to Art and Anne Modrowski in East Chicago, IN, Tom was the sixth of seven children. He was proud of his Catholic, Croatian-Polish family and spoke with great admiration of his upbringing on White Oak Ave in Roxanna. He attended East Chicago Roosevelt High School, and went on to Wabash College where he played football and baseball on an athletic scholarship, majored in mathematics and formed lifelong friendships that transcended time and space.

It is here he would meet the love of his life, a girl from southern Indiana, named Kim, whom he affectionately called “Kimbo” or “Bobo”. Together they raised their family, while his career blossomed, and for 45 years they were inseparable.

There is nothing he was more proud of than his three daughters and their families. As a young father, he effortlessly embraced girl dad life. He studied how to French braid hair, smoothed

out bumps in ponytails, and painted nails. He famously learned a pair of jeans cost more than $20, built jewelry boxes for Christmas gifts, and taught himself to play the piano to participate in recital duets. He helped with math homework, coached all the sports teams and never missed an opportunity to chant “Girl Power!” Despite all his career accomplishments, “Papa” was his greatest title and his 10 grandchildren were the light of his life. You could usually find him eating a Dilly Bar by the pool, with a soaking wet child on his lap, while taking a conference call, organizing a wiffle ball game and thinking about making popcorn on the stove for a movie night sleepover.

Tom’s superpower was making you feel like the most important person in the room, and somehow he had time for everyone and everything. He never missed a game, recital, or a play, a business meeting, a tee time, a dinner with friends, a vacation or a birthday party. He was the most patient, humble, selfless, kind and loving man, enamored only by all the wonderful people in his life.

He will be remembered for his big group hugs, an uncanny ability to spread joy in all situations, and his love of pancakes, homemade bread and beef barley soup. He was a great man with great friends and a great family. He loved his life and everyone who was part of it. A steel giant. A Little Giant. A gentle giant. Rest in peace sweet husband, father, brother and friend.

Rather than a traditional wake, join us to honor Tom’s legacy with a celebration with friends and family on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Open house from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Innsbrook Country Club 6701 W Taft St, Merrillville, IN 46410. Everyone is welcome, children encouraged! Memorial visitation

Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 9:30am until the time of Tom’s funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. directly at St. John the Evangelist Day Chapel 11301 W. 93rd Ave, St. John, IN

46373, with Rev. Roque Meraz officiating.

Assessor Fritz Kaegi releases first Chicago property reassessments

Cook County — Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi released the initial assessments of residential and commercial properties in Rogers Park Township on March 18, 2024, marking the beginning of the reassessment of the City of Chicago. The Assessor’s Office reassesses one-third of Cook County every year. Chicago was last reassessed in 2021.

“I encourage property owners to review their reassessment notice to ensure their property characteristics and market value reflect their home,” said Assessor Fritz Kaegi. “It is important to understand that assessments in Chicago reflect changes in market value over the last three years. My office will be hosting a virtual workshop to assist property owners and explain reassessments in their community.”

“In Rogers Park Township, industrial property, large multifamily apartments and other franchised commercial classes of property drove a significant increase in assessed value. The value of residential property also grew, although at a slightly lower rate,” added Assessor Kaegi.

The total assessed value in Rogers Park Township grew 32%. The median sale price for single-family homes in 2023 was $450,000 in Rogers Park. Therefore, the Assessor’s estimate of the median market value of single-family homes is $431,000.

When a property is reassessed, the property owner is mailed a Reassessment Notice. The Reassessment Notice reflects the estimated Fair Market Value based on sales of similar

properties. The notice also contains important information such as the property’s characteristics, neighborhood code, and past assessments. An increase in a property’s assessment does not cause the same increase in the property owner’s taxes.

Appeals for Rogers Park Township can be filed until April 17, 2024.

How do assessment appeals work? Property owners are given an opportunity to appeal their assessment if the property characteristics listed on an assessment notice are incorrect, or if the estimated market value of a property is significantly more than what it could sell for in the current real estate market.

To learn more about property assessments and appeals, watch our upcoming virtual workshop live on Facebook or YouTube scheduled for March 27, 2024, at 6 p.m. The workshop will include information about the reassessment notice and how property owners can file appeals with the Assessor’s office. View all our upcoming events at www.cookcountyassessor.com/eventlist.

After a township undergoes reassessment, a valuation report is released that provides details on residential, commercial, and multifamily reassessments. Property owners can use these reports to gain insight on how property assessments work, learn about the real estate market in their specific neighborhood, and compare the median to their property value. The valuation reports for Rogers Park Township can be found at: cookcountyassessor.com/valuation-reports.
