A joint investigation by Sheriff’s Police, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection led to felony drug charges against the owner of Chicago’s Spybar nightclub, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

At approximately 12:37 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, officers arrested 43-year-old Dino Gardiakos, of the 800 block of North Wood Street in Chicago, after they found he was in possession of substantial amounts of Ketamine and Ecstasy while traveling from London to the U.S. Upon his arrival at O’Hare International Airport, officers discovered six containers in his luggage of approximately 14 pounds of a white powdery substance that tested positive for Ketamine. Additionally, officers recovered a pill bottle that contained about 5.8 grams of Ecstasy. He was transported to Sheriff’s Police Headquarters for further questioning.

After being issued his Miranda Warning, Gardiakos told

investigators he purchased six kilograms of Ketamine from an individual in London and that this individual told him how to conceal the drugs to smuggle it through O’Hare Customs. Gardiakos further stated that the Ketamine was for both personal use and for sale in the Chicagoland area.

At the time of his arrest, Gardiakos was on probation for felony drug offenses. Later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of Trafficking of a Controlled Substance, a Class X Felony,

Mrvan Statement on Women’s History Month

Washington, DC – Earlier this month, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan spoke on the House floor to celebrate Women’s History Month and recognize Dr. Vanessa Allen-McCloud, President and CEO of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana. A video of the remarks is available here, and the text of the remarks as prepared for delivery is below.

“Mr. Speaker: It is with great respect that I rise to celebrate National Women’s History Month and its 2024 theme, Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Each year, the National Women’s History Alliance selects a unifying theme in honor of Women’s History Month. This year’s theme recognizes the numerous brave women throughout history who have fought and continue to fight for justice and equality for women in all aspects of American society.

“As we celebrate the relentless efforts of women who have devoted their lives to this cause, I would like to take the time to honor a true leader in Northwest Indiana, Dr. Vanessa Allen-McCloud. Her passion for civil service and education serves as an inspiration for women throughout the region and beyond. Dr. AllenMcCloud holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Calumet College of St. Joseph and a Master of Education degree from Purdue University Northwest. In 2013, she earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Dr. Allen-McCloud’s impressive career includes various professional positions in the field of education at Purdue University Calumet, South Suburban College, and the Gary Community School Corporation. In 2010, Dr.

GROW TO GROW

Springtime is here, and all around us, nature is coming alive. The plants, the flowers, and even the grass seem to be growing before our eyes. But what about us? We are getting older physically, but are we growing mentally, emotionally, and spiritually? It’s important to think about and act on ways to grow and mature because just like stagnant water, if we don’t grow, we can become stuck. Growing means maturing over time by progressing towards becoming the best version of ourselves. And just like plants need water and sunlight to grow, we need to feed our minds, nurture our emotions, and cultivate our spiritual lives to grow.

Mental growth is like planting seeds in our minds and watching them blossom into knowledge and understanding. Learning and adapting to new things are the keys to mental growth. It doesn’t always mean going back to school; it can be as simple as picking up a book from the library. Libraries are treasure troves of learning opportunities, offering not just books but audio materials, activities, and events like computer training, yoga classes, or book clubs. Stop in at your local library to inquire about what’s available. Also, check out the library section in The Shopper for events. Local colleges often have affordable courses on a variety of topics, from cooking to photography. Even watching educational programs or videos on platforms like YouTube can expand our minds. Engaging with the world around us, meeting new people, and exploring our communities are all ways to stimulate mental growth.

Emotional growth is about learning to understand and manage our feelings. Just like plants need care and attention, our emotions need nurturing too. Controlling our emotions or feelings doesn’t mean ignoring or suppressing them. It means understanding them and responding to them in healthy ways. One way to do this is through emotional learning. Psychologist Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence, teaches that we can learn how to control and express our emotions through self-awareness, empathy, social skills, self-regulation, and motivation. This involves

recognizing our emotions, understanding what triggers them, and learning how to express them appropriately. For example, if we feel angry, instead of lashing out, we can find an alternative such as taking a deep breath, counting to ten, or saying a prayer are constructive ways to deal with our feelings. Building emotional resilience takes time, practice, and effort, but it’s essential for our overall well-being.

Spiritual growth is about deepening our relationship with God to find meaning and purpose in our lives. Just as plants need sunlight to thrive, our souls need the spiritual light of God to provide nourishment. This can come through prayer, meditation, and reading Bible scriptures. Two Bible verses that are inspirational for spiritual growth are:

1. “Trust in the Lord will all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

2. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

By trusting in God and seeking His guidance, we can find direction and purpose in our lives. Spiritual growth also involves living out our faith through acts of love and service to others. Jesus expresses the two greatest commands are to love the Lord first, and our neighbors as ourselves. Volunteering at a local charity or helping a neighbor in need are ways to put spiritual growth into action.

Just as spring brings new life to the world around us, we too can experience growth in our lives. Learning allows us to grow, expand, and explore the world around us. Increasing your desire to learn and focus on topics that can improve yourself and your life. By mentally feeding our minds with knowledge, nurturing through controlling our emotions, and developing our spiritual relationship with God, we can flourish and thrive. Let’s take steps to grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, by becoming the best versions of ourselves. Y? Why Not!

Throughout the years the Urban League has hosted numerous programs and seminars highlighting opportunities for women. In addition, Dr. Allen-McCloud is a certified civility trainer in Civility in the Workplace and Cultural Competence and has been a noteworthy speaker in this regard. For her extraordinary leadership and passion for giving back to the community, Dr. Allen-McCloud is worthy of the highest praise.

“Over the years, Dr. Allen-McCloud has received many accolades honoring her impressive career. In addition, Dr. AllenMcCloud has generously served her community by giving of her time and efforts to numerous charitable endeavors, and she serves on several local and national boards. For her exceptional devotion to these earnest causes, Dr. AllenMcCloud is to be commended.

“Mr. Speaker, at this time, I ask you and my other distinguished colleagues to join me in celebrating Women’s History Month and recognizing the dedication and contributions of Dr. Allen-McCloud and so many other extraordinary women who work to make our communities more equal, diverse and inclusive.”

Helped Crown Point Client File Complaints

On March 11, 2024, I helped a client from Crown Point file complaints against a firm in Florida.

The firm was working together with other firms to send the client and his wife test kits which they never ordered and then filed claims with Medicare to get money from Medicare and the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company.

For over 20 years in my job, I have collected addresses to which complaints should be sent. There are different addresses to which people should send complaints depending on the facts of the matter and whether it involves violations of federal or state laws.

In this case, we sent complaints (with copies of evidence) to the Medicare Claims Office, the Medicare Inspector General, the Fraud Complaints office of Medicare, and the Consumer Protection Offices of both the Florida and the Indiana State Attorney General. With some editing, here is part of the letter.

Dear Representatives, I received packages of test kits from (a lab company).

I never requested the test kits and never used them. But I got Medicare Summary

Notices that (the lab company) BILLED MEDICARE. This was a fraudulent billing of Medicare. The date of service was 12/11/2023 for Claim # XXXXX and 01/10/2024 for Claim # XXXXX. The Medicare Summary Notice states that these were ordered by PXXXXX D. AXXXXXX. I do not know anyone with this name. In addition to this, women named TXXXX and VXXXXXX phoned me twice a day for weeks offering to help me use the test kits. They wanted me to send the test kit samples to a firm in Lake Worth, FL.

Accompanying this letter are copies of papers that I received from the firm (a lab company) or related firms.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This firm helps our clients with problems in the Medicare system to demonstrate that we really care about them.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

Mrvan Announces 2024 Congressional Art Competition

Heart Smart

JOSH BOOTSMA

An interesting character in the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross is Barabbas.

The people that want to kill Jesus cry out to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor at the time, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”

The Bible tells us Barabbas was an insurrectionist and a murderer. That is, not a good guy.

Imagine Barabbas in his prison cell. He knows what he deserves. He knows he killed someone and will be killed for it. I imagine that every time he hears a guard walking toward his cell, he’s expecting to be told, “It’s time for your crucifixion.” It’s time for him to pay his debt.

But what happens? Luke 23 tells us the people demanded Jesus’ death and Barabbas’ release: “With loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. So Pilate decided to grant their demand. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.”

Back to the prison cell. Barabbas hears the keys jingling in the hand of the guard. The door opens. It’s finally time for judgment.

“You’re free to go.”

Barabbas is stunned. What’s happening?

“You have a substitute,” maybe the guard told him.

Later, as Jesus hangs on the cross dying the death that Barabbas was sentenced to die, I wonder if Barabbas looked upon him and thought, “That was supposed to be me.”

Every Christian should see themselves in Barabbas. We deserve death for our rebellion against God. As we look upon a crucified Jesus, we also should say, “That was supposed to be me.”

If not for our perfect substitute, it would be me. It would be you. Praise God for his glorious grace and his death on our behalf!

South Holland, IL – South Suburban College (SSC) proudly announces its inaugural nationally certified Quality Matters (QM) course certification, reinforcing the institution’s dedication to delivering high-quality online learning experiences. Quality Matters certification was awarded to the synchronous online course PLA 101 Introduction to Paralegalism in October 2023, marking a significant milestone in SSC’s commitment to excellence in online education. The course, led by tenured professor Becky Walters—also the Program Coordinator for Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies—underwent a meticulous preparation process in collaboration with SSC’s Center for Teaching and Learning for the Quality Matters review.

According to Becky Walters, J.D., “Our Law and Paralegal Studies program is entirely online. As such, it is vital that our students have access to and benefit from well-designed, easily navigable online classrooms. We strive to make their online classroom experience positive to the point at which it is even superior to any in-person classes.”

The Quality Matters review, conducted by national QMCertified Reviewers, validates the course’s quality and learnerfocused design, utilizing the Quality Matters Rubric and associated Standards based on research and best practices. This certification places the course alongside other major universities and colleges on the QM directory of nationally certified courses. QM certified courses proudly display the QM Certification Mark, symbolizing a commitment to the highest standards in online education. Dr. Tasha Williams, Vice-President of Academic Services, remarked, “ I am proud to witness the attainment of Quality Matters certification for our Introduction to Paralegalism course at SSC. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality, learner-focused online education.”

In addition to obtaining QM certification for a paralegal course, SSC stands out as the exclusive community college in the South Suburban Chicago region with its Paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). The college is also an institutional member of the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE). SSC’s Paralegal program has earned recognition from the American Bar Association for its Access to Justice and Pro Bono initiatives, including the distinctive, community-based Expungement Clinic. Furthermore, it received acknowledgment from the Illinois State Bar Association in the September 2021 ISBA

article, “The Problem-Solving Court Boom.”

Dr. Lynette Stokes, President of SSC, expressed her satisfaction with the accomplishment, “As President of South Suburban College, I am proud of the accomplishments of our Paralegal program, especially the Quality Matters certification achieved by our Introduction to Paralegalism course. This certification highlights the collaborative efforts between Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies, and SSC’s Center for Teaching and Learning during the Quality Matters review process.”

The attainment of QM certification underscores SSC’s unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. PLA 101 Introduction to Paralegalism is now listed on the QM directory of nationally certified courses can display the QM Certification Mark on the course syllabus, within the course in the learning management system, and on the college’s website and catalog system.

The Paralegal program is excited to announce a series of virtual workshops scheduled for April 22, May 13, June 10, and August 5th. The workshops will take place from 6:00 –7:00 pm central time. Designed to provide valuable insights into the field of paralegal studies, each workshop offers participants the opportunity to explore various aspects of the profession, including job prospects, program curriculum, and career pathways. Time for financial spring cleaning?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

Spring is almost here, which means it’s time for some spring cleaning. This year, in addition to tidying your home and surroundings, you might want to consider sprucing up your financial environment, as well. Here are some suggestions for doing just that:

• Improve your vision. Once the days are warmer and longer, you may want to get outside and clean all the winter grime and smudges from your windows, allowing you to see the world more clearly. And you may want to bring more focus to your financial vision by asking some key questions: Is my investment strategy still appropriate for my needs, goals and family situation? If not, what changes should I make? And am I prepared for changes in my life, such as health challenges or a need to retire earlier than planned? The answers to these and other questions can help you clarify where you are, in terms of your financial picture, and where you want to go.

in the spring, hoping their efforts result in lovely flowers and tasty foods. And when you invest, you, too, need to plant seeds of opportunity in the form of investments that you hope will grow enough to enable you to make progress toward your goals. So, you may want to review your portfolio to ensure it’s providing this growth potential, given your individual risk tolerance.

• De-clutter. As you look around your home, you may find things such as expired health care products, old prescriptions, ancient cleaning solutions, and so on, in addition to duplicate household items (how many blenders do you really need?) and nonworking equipment — printers, laptops, etc. Most people find that eliminating this clutter gives them a good feeling – and more livable space. As an investor, you can also find clutter in the form of redundant investments — for example, you might own several nearly identical mutual funds. You might be better off selling some of these funds and using the proceeds to find new investments that can help you further diversify your portfolio. As you may know, diversification is a key to investment success, but keep in mind that it can’t prevent all losses.

• Plant seeds of opportunity. Whether they’re planting camellias and crocuses or carrots and cilantro, gardeners are busy

• Reduce dangers. You may not think about it that much, but your home and surroundings can contain potential hazards. You might have ill-fitting caps on cleaning products with toxic chemicals, or sharp cutting instruments protruding from shelves in your garage, or heavy, cracked tree branches hovering close to your roof. Spending some time on a spring-cleaning sweep can get rid of these dangers — and devoting time to consider the possible threats to your financial security, and those of your family, can pay off, too. For starters, review your life insurance to determine if you’ve got enough. Your employer may offer some coverage as an employee benefit, but it might not be sufficient, so you may need private coverage. And the same is true for disability insurance, because if something were to happen to you, and you couldn’t work for a while, you’d still want to protect your family’s lifestyle. Spring is a great time for brightening your physical space — and your financial one, too.

BARICK

Joyce M. Barick, nee Yos, age 72, of St. John, IN, went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Beloved wife of David M. Barick. Loving mother of Eric (April) Wasyliw, Randall (Elizabeth) Barick, Steven (Jaime) Barick, and Kevin (Kristen) Barick. Cherished grandmother of Blake, Connor, Gwyneth, Zofia, Carson, Connor, Jake, Lily, and Violet. Dear sister of Carolyn Yos, the late Linda Gowan, Diane (James) McGettigan, Jennifer Yos, Tish Yos, the late Raymond Yos, Amanda (William) Spaulding, Sharon (Richard) Pudlewski, Janice (Robert) Wilschke, the late August Yos, late Eleanor Yos, and the late Thomas Yos. Devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

Family and friends were everything to Joyce. Whether she was hosting parties or vacationing in Woodsmoke, the Dells, Nashville, or Vegas, Joyce had a knack for planning events that connected family with good food and drink, fun games and activities, and generous gift-giving. Her summer pool parties and her Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings will always be special memories of a gracious hostess whose love and attention to details made all the difference.

Joyce was loyal to all. To her husband, she was “the wind in his sails.” For her sons, she kept their best interests at heart in all of her decisions. To her best friend of 55 years — Karen Stachelski—she was like a sister, sharing both secrets and lots of laughs. To every single member of her large and extended family, she was an encourager and supporter.

Joyce celebrated every win —whether it was a game of poker or a board game with family and friends, or a win for her beloved Cubbies or Bears. In Joyce’s earthly life, her biggest win was to live to see grandchildren, whom she loved beyond measure. We are comforted knowing that our loss of Joyce is her biggest win yet — to live an eternal life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

HLINOVSKY

This isn’t going to be your traditional obituary. No life and death dates because a death date states that she’s gone and she will never be gone from this earth. You see, Rafaela Hlinovsky (Chiquita) is still very much alive right now. She is alive in the selflessness and strength in her daughter (Lizette). She is alive in the hearty laugh and humor of her son ( Andres). She is alive in the way that her granddaughter (Katherine) parents and loves her two children (Madison and Harvey). To know Rafaela (Chiquita, madresita) was a great privilege. Anyone who got to meet her even for a few

minutes can attest to that. She was an adorable red head who would brighten your day when you saw her. There was always hugs and kisses and they never ran out. One of her favorite ways to show love was through food. She loved making a big meal and feeding anyone who would sit at her table and eat. She loved fiercely and intensely. There was never a moment you had to question her love. She made sure to tell you as often as she possibly could. She loved to tell stories about her life to her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Stories that you would think would harden a person but for her, made her more gentle, kind and appreciative of the little things in life. Her strength and will to fight is one of her most admirable qualities. Things that would have taken most people down didn’t even phase her. She laid her burdens down at God’s feet and trusted that he would give her what she needed and he did. He always did. So instead of calling this an obituary I call this a celebratory dedication. Here’s to the woman who helped raise me, who loved me and guided me through life. My absolute soul mate. Here’s to the woman who raised two beautiful, wonderful, kind, caring people I have the privilege of calling my mom and uncle.

To the best Mother (Lizette and Andres), Grandmother (Katherine Knauerhaze, Jeremy Garcia, and Andres Garcia), great grandmother (Madison Knauerhaze, Harvey Hart, and Anjolie Garcia), daughter (Clemencia Velazquez-concepcion and Isidro Velazquez), and sister (Angela, Matilde, Isidro, Isabel, Luis, Carmen, Sara, Anna, Luz, Carlos, Jose, Tomas, and Jorge) anyone could have asked for. And to God’s most beautiful angel, she now walks beside her grandson Jeremy who she missed so much. She will be remembered in our hearts and through every story and kind word that is ever spoken of her.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: What is Redlining and Steering in the Real Estate industry?

Answer: These real estate practices of Redlining and Steering are illegal, discriminatory, and are not tolerated under the Fair Housing Act. Fortunately, these practices were mostly eliminated decades ago.

Redlining generally refers to the denial of services such as mortgages and other financial services to residents of certain areas, based on their race or ethnicity. It originated from government-created “residential safety maps” that rated neighborhoods based on a number of factors, including race. These maps were created as part of the 1930s New Deal, where Congress offered government-insured mortgages to homeowners to ward off Depression-era foreclosures. The red-colored areas of the maps were seen as risky mortgage investments and were given the lowest “D” rating. These redlined areas were home to mostly minority groups, who would therefore receive a bad mortgage rate or none at all.

A form of redlining, steering involves a real estate agent influencing a homebuyer’s choice of communities based on the buyer’s race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristic. A real estate agent may not tell a buyer about available properties that meet their criteria within certain neighborhoods because of their assumptions about what a customer wants or needs based on the customer’s personal characteristics. Realtors agree to a strict code of ethics that bars any form of discrimination. The Code of Ethics, along with fair housing laws, determines how real estate agents conduct their business. Discrimination of any kind is not tolerated. Period! E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home?
