TO BE ADDED, EMAIL ERICAW@MYSHOPPER.BIZ BETHEL CHURCH

JOSH BOOTSMA A young man goes to the store to buy snacks for a work party he doesn’t want to go to. As he stands tenth in line with his handbasket, it gets heavier by the minute. There’s only one cashier. The man is going to be late for a party he doesn’t even want to go to. How does he feel about carrying the heavy basket at that moment? Now picture the same young man a week later, about to have a casual date night with his girlfriend. He stands with her in line at the store, with the same heavy handbasket full of their favorite snacks. The line is even slower but he doesn’t notice. He’s just enjoying being with his girlfriend and getting the snacks she likes. What’s the difference? What we carry is less important than why we’re carrying it, and who we’re carrying it for. This is what Jesus means when he says in Matthew 11:30, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” In the context in which he was speaking in Matthew 11, Jesus is contrasting himself with the religious leaders of the day, whose burdens of the law were heavy. Following Jesus isn’t any less demanding than following any other series of laws or rules, but it is easier. Because when we take on the yoke of our Savior, we bear the burden of one who is “gentle and lowly in heart” (v. 29) and we do so knowing that we’re not carrying the weight without cause or purpose, but carrying it in order to bring glory to our God, and to “find rest for [our] souls.” Bearing the yoke of the world and its expectations is an oppressive burden. Instead, the one who bore the burden of our sin invites us to take His yoke upon ourselves. In the scope of eternity, Christ’s burden is easy and light. Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

One of the common mistakes I see first time homebuyers make is involving too many people in their decision making. Well meaning family, friends, and co-workers can give advice that interferes with the home buying process. I found a young couple the perfect home that met all their criteria and more. This particular home was unique because of its location, size, and price. Unfortunately, the “buying committee” all had differing points of view. Some of the committee members felt the home needed to much repair, others thought that the buyers needed to look at more homes and still others wanted them to continue to hunt for the best “deal”. Of course, it’s easy to shop and shop for a home, when you have a home to go back to at the end of the day. As such, this committee was essentially a pool of very unmotivated buyers. And any seasoned Realtor knows that an unmotivated buyer is a terrible decision maker. Further, if you ask 10 different people, you are going to get 10 different answers. Turning your home purchase into the equivalent of an “act of congress” is not really

a great idea. The buyers clearly wanted this first home, however, pleasing the committee predictably proved to be an impossible task. I tried to point out the unique nature of the home, but I’m sure my advice sounded like the scream of a teenage girl at a Just Bieber concert – indiscernible. The end result? They missed out on a great house (which time proved was in fact a tremendous deal!), and we ended up looking for homes off and on for another six months. Eventually the committee members tired of reviewing homes with the buyers, after all, they couldn’t seem to make a decision. The buyers did eventually make a decision (without committee input), but later confided that they still drove by that first house that got away…”the one that died in committee”. Speaking Of Seniors

Medicare Records False For Almost Two Years WOODROW WILCOX

On March 11, 2021, one of our agents asked me to help his client who came to him with a Medicare billing problem. I helped her that day. She had ordered diabetes test strips and other related items through a local pharmacy. Medicare denied the claim from the pharmacy. Medicare refused to help our senior citizen client get the diabetic supplies. With our client in my office as we made phone calls, I started investigating the source of the problem. We phoned the pharmacy to get more details of the rejection. Then, we phoned Medicare. We found the source of the problem. After the client retired, she was covered by her husband’s employer sponsored group insurance plan. When he retired, the employer notified the insurance company that he was no longer covered. The employer’s human resources department forgot to notify the insurance company that his wife (our client) was no longer covered by the group insurance plan, too. So, the group insurer

kept reporting to Medicare that she was covered. Because of that, Medicare ruled that it would not cover our client’s bills because she already had a private insurance company covering her health insurance. We connected to a special office at Medicare and corrected Medicare’s records on our client. In about two weeks, she should be able to get her diabetic supplies with Medicare coverage. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” to protect our clients from financial harm when the Medicare system does not work properly. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through many store and online booksellers.

Financial Advice Column

Time For Some Financial Spring Cleaning SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN In just a few days, we will experience the vernal equinox – one of the two times in the year when the sun is exactly above the equator. Apart from this astronomical anomaly, though, the equinox is mostly known as the beginning of spring – a fresh beginning and the time to spruce things up. This year, as you tidy up your home and surroundings, why not also consider some financial spring cleaning? Here are a few ideas for getting your financial house in order: ·“De-clutter” your portfolio Over the years, many of us tend to pick up duplicate items that find their way into the nooks and crannies of our homes, gathering dust and remaining unused. Over time, your investment portfolio can also accumulate redundancies – that is, you might own several investments that are essentially similar. It might be appropriate to replace some of these and broaden your holdings. · Own your investments purposefully You own certain things for certain reasons – a broom to sweep the floors, a microwave to heat the food and so on. As an investor, you should be following a goal-based strategy that includes the matching of certain investments with certain objectives. For example, you might own stocks or mutual funds to eventually provide the capital appreciation potential you’ll need to retire comfortably. But you might also own other vehicles, such as bonds or other fixed-income investments, to provide you with a source of regular income. ·“Dust off” your investment strategy Over a long winter, your windows can get dirty and grimy, so, when spring arrives, you may want to get out the glass cleaner – and when you’re done, you’ll be able to see out more clearly. Over time, your investment strategy may get somewhat “dusty,” too,

especially if you’ve experienced significant changes in your life, such as a new job, a new child or even a new plan for retirement. By periodically reviewing your investment strategy, you’ll be able to clarify your vision for the future. ·Protect yourself from hidden dangers If you poke around your garage, shed or other storage area, you may well find some objects – gardening tools, paint thinners and engine fluids, leaning ladders and so on – that could be dangerous, either because they aren’t stored properly or they’re hard to see and can cause trips and falls. As part of your spring cleaning, you’d want to get these objects out of harm’s way to safeguard yourself and your family. But when you think of your financial situation, are you also exposing yourself and your loved ones to risk? If something were to happen to you, could your family members stay in their home? Could your children still go to college? To help keep their lifestyle intact if you weren’t around, you’ll need adequate life insurance. And to avoid burdening your grown children with potentially huge expenses should you ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay, you may want to talk to a financial advisor about protection strategies. By taking some spring cleaning measures, you can brighten your living space for the seasons ahead. And by applying some of the same principles to your financial environment, you can help improve the prospects for meeting your important goals. JUST HORSIN’ AROUND: On a beautiful sunny day last week, along 75th Avenue (which runs parallel to US. 30) in Dyer, this lovely brown mule and his two equine companions came to the fence where I stopped to both admire them and take their picture. This must happen a lot as they all three came right up to the fence where I was standing looking for a lump of sugar I expect or even some carrots. A farmer who sells eggs and beef owns the acreage along US 30 and 75th Avenue giving a rural vibe to the sprawling housing developments adjacent. ***

“ST. PATRICK” JOGS ALONG KENNEDY AVENUE IN DYER: The cheerful gent from the Emerald Isle took advantage of the great weather on Saturday March 13th, 2021 to jog along Kennedy Avenue and wave to the motorists along the way. When N 2 N drove by and asked his name, he said, “St. Patrick!” What else? And since this Wednesday is St. Patrick’s Day, let’s remember the colorful figure who is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and probably responsible in part for the Christianization of the Piets and Anglo-Saxons. He is known only from two short works, the “Confessio”, a spiritual autobiography, and “Letter to Coroticus,” a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians. The shamrock traditionally associated with St. Patrick is supposed to reprsent the Holy Trinity and Patrick used that in his teachings. ***

SEEKING PRAYERS FOR MY SON: As readers of this column have learned over the last 27 years and before that at the old Daily Calumet, this writer has been writing about my son Spencer, now 51. I wrote about his birthdays and special events his whole life. Now I include my four grandkids. When he was younger it embarrassed him and as he grew older he thought it funny and even charming sometimes, as a Mom professes her pride in her only son. Now Spencer has had a run of bad luck health wise and is hospitalized with kidney, and lung (ventilator) problems that are trying to overcome him. It is not Covid 19 but a perfect storm of ailments that came together in the last 10 days. I’ve been on FB over the past week and have received many kind thoughts and prayers for his recovery. Now I’m appealing to our Shopper readers with a similar plea--if you can spare a prayer for my son Spencer Minton, I would be so thankful and grateful to all of you. God Bless You. ***

AMVETS POST 43 HOSTS ANNUAL SPRING FAIR: From 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Amvets Post at 14032 Torrence Avenue, Burnham Il hosted a variety of crafters who displayed wonderful, original creations for the home, fashion and personal care. Pictured here are Valerie Piotrowski, of Amvets 43 and Jackie Koronkowski of Calumet City. Val, as always made her lovely floral arrangements and Jackie enjoyed the crafts. Masks and social distancing was the order of the day so it was safe and fun! ***

Luck of the Irish: The phrase luck of the Irish is commonly thought to mean “extreme good fortune.” However, according to Edward T. O’Donnell, author of 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History: “During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression ‘luck of the Irish.’

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Q. Our home is for sale. We are not home for viewings, but we do have cameras that record the walk through with each showing. We were surprised how these people open our closets, kitchen cabinets and appliances. Do you think we should say something to our Realtor? A. Say something about what? Are you taking the closets with you? Are you removing the Kitchen cabinets for your new home? I can guess with extreme certainty that you are not taking them with you. Since you are leaving them because they are part of the home, what is wrong with the buyers looking at them, observing the space they offer & feeling the quality? As far as appliances go, whether you plan on leaving them or taking them with you, they are still negotiable items! Buyers have every right to observe them in a respectful manner. When you go to the supermarket you check the condition of the fruit. You read the labels

of products that you may want to buy. The same applies to the items that are staying with the home. Buyers will notice that there are cameras watching them and they will be very uncomfortable. Also, check your listing contract, they may be illegal to use during showings. This is even worse than if you were following them around during a showing, blabbing about how wonderful your home is. An uncomfortable viewing does not usually equate to a home sale. Ditch the cameras and let your buyers fall in love with what could be their new Home.
