January Is Mental Wellness Month

We promote mental health awareness every January as National Mental Wellness Month. What better way to start the new year than with a reminder to recharge your mental health?

According to WebMD, good mental health can positively affect your physical health. Being in a good mental state can keep you healthy and help prevent significant health conditions. Mental health conditions can also make dealing with a chronic illness more difficult. The mortality rate from cancer and heart disease is higher among people with depression or other mental health conditions.

Recent research by NAMI has found that as much as 46% of people who die by suicide had a known mental health condition.

As much as 55% of adults with a mental illness receive no treatment, and 60% of youth with major depression also do not receive treatment. This is why it is crucial to maintain positive mental health and treat any poor mental health conditions. Taking care of our mental health can help us control or combat some of the physical health problems directly linked to mental health conditions. Some of the most common mental health conditions are PTSD, Depression, Panic Disorder, and Eating Disorders.

People who suffer from these conditions are at a higher risk of suicide than those who do not.

Gov. Holcomb Announces $18.1 mil. Grant to Support Child Care Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced today the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning is awarding $18.1 million in employer-sponsored child care grants to 64 businesses, community groups and school corporations. The initiative, part of Gov. Holcomb’s 2023 Next Level Agenda, is mobilizing employers and communities to create or expand child care offerings that address the needs of working Hoosiers.

“We wanted those who know first-hand the critical needs of their employees, and those who are best positioned to partner in their communities, to create child care solutions for their workforce, and they delivered,” Gov. Holcomb said. “This effort harnesses the combined efforts of businesses, community groups, and schools that want to support working Hoosiers’ careers and our youngest learners across the state.”

Thirty-three employers plan to provide on-site child care to their employees, and 13 will offer child care tuition benefits to their workers. The remaining awardees plan to support child care for their employees in a variety of other ways, such as reserving seats at partner child care centers. Recipe to Kick off Your 2024 Health Resolutions Quinoa and Roasted Vegetable Buddha Bowl Ingredients: 1 cup quinoa, rinsed 2 cups water 1 medium sweet potato, peeled and diced 1 cup broccoli florets 1 red bell pepper, sliced 1 zucchini, sliced 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 cup cucumber, diced 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped 1/4 cup feta cheese, crumbled (optional) For the Lemon Tahini Dressing: 3 tablespoons tahini 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced Salt and pepper to taste Water (to thin as needed) Instructions: Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare Quinoa: In a medium saucepan, combine quinoa and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20

minutes or until quinoa is cooked and water is absorbed. Fluff with a fork and set aside.

Roast Vegetables: Place sweet potato, broccoli, red bell pepper, and zucchini on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat evenly. Roast in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and slightly caramelized.

Prepare Lemon Tahini Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. If the dressing is too thick, add water, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

Assemble the Buddha Bowl: Divide the cooked quinoa among serving bowls. Arrange the roasted vegetables on top of the quinoa.

Add cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion.

If desired, sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese.

Drizzle with Dressing: Drizzle the lemon tahini dressing over the Buddha bowls just before serving. Toss gently to combine and coat all ingredients with the flavorful dressing.

A Reason Why Indiana Residents Should Avoid Illinois WOODROW WILCOX

On December 11, 2023, I learned a reason for a balance on an ambulance bill for a resident of Schererville, Indiana. It was a policy of Medicare.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client and others, here is what I wrote to the client.

I phoned the ambulance company and got a return call.

The representative was quite clear about the balance of the ambulance bill. You owe that balance because of a policy of Medicare.

You were taken from a hospital in Chicago to a rehabilitation facility in Indiana. Medicare said that it would not cover that distance because you could have gone to a rehabilitation facility much closer to the hospital.

This is just one more reason that for years I have been telling Indiana residents not to go to Illinois for medical services if they can avoid it. So many things can go wrong with the billing of services when the Indiana – Illinois state line is crossed.

Don’t believe me? Now, you have a bill for almost $400 that proves I’m correct about that.

I think that the Medicare policy of not paying to transport a patient close to where the patient lives is a bad policy. I believe that a patient is going to have an easier time healing and heal more quickly if the patient is near friends and relatives who can visit the patient to love and encourage the patient during the healing process. Apparently, the people running Medicare don’t think like I do.

The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency gives all our clients Medicare related medical bill help to demonstrate that we care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency will not give such a high level of customer service, why not switch to our firm?

RETIME: RENEWING YOU

by Janice R Newman The new year has arrived, bringing promises of fresh beginnings, new seasons, and a future full of hope. As we enter 2024, this marks the start of the tradition of creating a list of resolutions, plans, goals, and desires that we hope to achieve. Whether it’s losing extra pounds, reading more books, embracing free time, or starting a new business venture, our lists are full of big ideas and dreams. Resolutions bring the concept of “renewing” our lives by embracing positive change to give us a more fulfilled and purposeful life. However, for these resolutions and plans to manifest, we need to act and not just write words on paper.

Renewing means getting rid of old habits and patterns that hinder us from moving forward and becoming the person we want to be. Renewal builds self-confidence, change in perspectives, and more optimistic, making us stronger to face the future. What does the “new” you look like? Imagine who you desire to be physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially. If you desire true improvement in your life, you must say goodbye to things that hinder your success, like unhealthy eating, spending sprees, and negative thinking. Why stick to habits and thoughts that don’t help us and have proven ineffective?

First, to renew your life start working on setting small clear attainable goals. What do you desire for your career, relationships, health, and spiritual well-being? Define what success in those areas means. Think about what will drive changes and improvements. Then plan steps to reach those goals. Improve your character by being more trustworthy, dependable, caring, sincere, kind, patient, etc. Physically, possibly change your style: hair, clothing, nail polish, makeup, or glasses. Spiritual: join a church.

Personal: attend a library event or class to make friends or learn something. The time for renewal is an excellent opportunity to take control and make powerful changes to become the “new you”, but it takes work and time.

Next, developing effective time management skills is crucial to working on your goals, enjoying the present, and reducing stress, which cultivates healthy habits with positive changes. Daily consistency is key to building and mastering habits. It is a continuous process to develop positive habits towards growth. We can make time daily for television and video

games, so why can’t we commit to something that will improve our lives?

Then, create an environment where you can continue to grow and renew yourself. Find someone, like friends, family, counselor, pastor, or mentor, who can help and encourage you.

Accountability is needed to help stay focused on tasks, especially when things get overwhelming.

Plan time to do things that make you happy during this renewal process. Stay hopeful by focusing on the good things in your life and imagine a better future. Emerge yourself in things that inspire you, like uplifting books, support groups, memorizing bible verses, and posters with positive sayings. I constantly recite Bible verses and have motivational sayings posted for encouragement.

Lastly, be watchful, to make sure the renewed you keep growing and doesn’t go back to the old you. Check your progress regularly on your goals and make changes if necessary. Celebrate small victories and learn from mistakes. Pray for strength and comfort in difficult times.

Ultimately, the journey of renewing your life in this season is empowering. Romans 12:2 NIV reminds us “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. As you consistently make positive changes, reinforce new habits, and learn new skills, you’re not just moving forward – you’re crafting a new version of yourself that reflects your true potential and embraces a renewed brighter future and fulfilled life. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD January 6 is called “Epiphany” (Greek for ‘manifestation’ or ‘appearance’) in the Christian calendar. It celebrates how God displayed Jesus as Messiah-King to the wise men from the east in Matthew 2:1-12.

This account is mysterious. First, no one is sure where the wise men came from. Many think Persia (Iran). Second, we don’t know how many visited Jesus. Third, we don’t know when they visited Jesus. Jesus was certainly out of the manger by then, living in a house in Bethlehem. Fourth, we don’t know what they saw in the sky. The Greek for ‘star’ can refer to a star, a conjunction of planets, or a comet.

We do know that these men weren’t Jewish, Bible-believing men. They were pagan, stargazing Gentiles who worshiped false gods. But God met them where they were at, in the middle of their stargazing, to get their attention and lead them to Jesus. Once they got to Jerusalem, God led them from the stars to the Scriptures, where Bible scholars quoted Micah 5:2 to say the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

The Scriptures pointed them to the Son of God. By faith, they saw him for who he was, worshiped him, and offered him their gifts.

What a beautiful picture about how God often reaches people today! You might be high, or seeking God in a false religious system, or chasing happiness in all the wrong ways, and God can meet you right where you’re at to get your attention. He can lead you to encounter Jesus in his Word, the Bible. His Spirit can move your heart to trust and worship Jesus as Savior and Lord.

If you have not yet joined the wise men to trust and worship Jesus, I hope you will.

New Year’s financial resolutions SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Now that we’ve reached 2024, you might be thinking about your goals and hopes for the new year. But in addition to whatever personal resolutions you might make — volunteering, going to the gym more, learning a new language and others — why not make some financial resolutions, too?

Here are a few to consider: • Boost your retirement savings. If you can afford it, try to increase your contributions to your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. The more you put away in these accounts, the greater your chances of reaching your retirement goals. At a minimum, contribute enough to your 401(k) to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. And whenever your salary goes up, consider raising the amount you put in to your 401(k).

• Reduce your debts. It’s not always easy to reduce your debts — but it’s worth the effort. The lower your debt load, the greater your monthly cash flow. So, look for ways to consolidate debts or find other, possibly more productive, ways of using credit. And if you truly can’t afford something that’s nonessential, don’t go into debt for it. “Live within your means” is an old piece of advice, but it’s just as valid now as ever.

• Build an emergency fund. If you suddenly needed a major home or car repair, or received a large medical bill not fully covered by insurance, would you have the funds available? If not, you might be forced to dip into your retirement accounts or other long-term investments. To avoid this possibility, try to build an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account that’s separate from the ones you use to meet your daily expenses. It can take a while to build such a fund, but if you make it a priority and

contribute regular amounts each month, you can make good progress.

• Avoid emotional decisions. Too many people overreact to events in the financial markets because they let their emotions get the better of them. If the market is temporarily down, it doesn’t mean you need to sell investments to “cut your losses” — especially if these investments still have good fundamentals and are still appropriate for your portfolio. It can be hard to ignore market volatility, but you’ll be better off if you focus on the long term and continue following an investment strategy that’s designed to meet your needs.

• Review your goals. Over time, your goals may have changed. For example, while you once might have wanted to retire early, and planned for it, you may now find that you’d like to work a few more years. If that’s the case, you may also need to adjust your financial and investment strategies.

• Revisit your estate plans. If you’ve married, divorced, remarried or added children to your family within the past few years, you may need to review the account titling and beneficiary designations on your 401(k) and other retirement assets, along with your estate-planning documents, such as your will or living trust. You might also need to revise these documents in other ways.

Of course, you may not be able to tackle all these resolutions at one time, but if you can work at them throughout the year, you can potentially brighten your financial outlook in 2024 — and beyond.

Talena Marie (Bulthuis) Van Drunen July 22, 1923 – December 26, 2023 The only child of William and Mary (Boeringa) Bulthuis, Talena was born into Chicago’s west side Dutch community, centered at the First Christian Reformed Church of Cicero, Illinois.

Affectionately known as Cicero One, this vibrant spiritual community of three hundred families included nearly all of Talena’s forty aunts and uncles and her seventy first cousins. Talena was one of six cousins named after their paternal grandmother, so to distinguish between the many Talena Bulthuis’s in Cicero One, mom became known as “T.” Already at a young age it was noted that T had an extraordinary contralto voice and she was welcomed

into Cicero One’s sanctuary choir when she entered seventh grade. She also sang in Chicago Christian High School’s a cappella choir during her high school years, and in the school’s alumni choir after her graduation in 1941. These experiences propelled a lifelong love of sacred music. T continued praising her Savior in church and community choirs throughout her life.

T’s parents, her extended family, Cicero One, and Christian High shaped mom’s life.

They nurtured her spiritual growth, and led her to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

T’s high school locker mate, Evelyn (Van Drunen) Vogel introduced Mom to Willard, Ev’s older brother.

Captivated by this dark haired, dark eyed beauty, Willard made many thirtyfive mile trips from South Holland, Illinois to attend Cicero One’s Sunday evening services and spend time with T. Willard received his draft notice shortly after World War II was declared in December, 1941. Despite the turmoil of the war years, Bill and T remained committed to each other and were married on February 12, 1944.

After the war, Mom and Dad settled in South Holland. We baby boomers, Jim, Jane, Barb, and Beth soon followed.

Mom and Dad’s commitment to their family, church, and Christian school community never wavered.

These decades were also filled with business ventures: The Whistle Stop drive-in, the Speedex Company, Van Drunen Lumber, RV sales, and land development. In Mom’s words, “Bill and I faced all decisions by first praying together, and then working things out. We had a lot of laughs, and some tears as well.”

Mom and Dad shared sixty-three years until Dad’s death on February 22, 2007 Mom taught by example.

As she put her energy to the tasks of supporting church, home, and school, Mom taught us the Joy of Work. As she gave her time and tithe, Mom taught us the Joy of Generosity.

With the welcome mat out and the coffeepot on, Mom taught us the Joy of Hospitality. Studying maps in hand to point the way, Mom taught us the Joy of Travel.

By her testimony through a century of days, Mom taught us the Joy of our Salvation. Now three generations call her blessed.

Gerald Lee Wagner, age 75 of Seminole, FL (formerly of Lake Village, Indiana) passed away December 21, 2023. Life partner of the late Martha Ann Catlin Wagner. Proud father of Jerod Lee Wagner; Nathan Lee (Windy) Wagner; Megan (Josh Brugger) Wagner; Margo Wagner; Myia Wagner. Loving grandfather of Dillon Lee Wagner; Colton Lee Wagner; Colin Lee Wagner; Eloise Brugger; Emerson Brugger; Elliot Brugger; Onyx Wagner Neubig; Opal Wagner; Cotton Davis; Coyote Davis. Jerry was born in South Holland, IL, an homage to his Dutch heritage. He was a ball of fire who hit the ground running and never looked back. He grew up farming, with rich Indiana soil coursing through him and unparalleled strength and pride that he instilled within his children.

He spent his early years asking the sun what took so long to rise, working the fields and farmer’s markets of Chicago hours before day light. He was a self-appointed protector of all. His home was always open to wayfarers and the misfortunate. He loved to travel. And was always on the go, often burning rubber in his tracks. He toured the country from coast to coast and back again on eighteen wheels, frequently with his wife and small children, bestowing a life of adventure and fond memories.

He was a lover of nature, avid hunter, exceptional athlete, and a fan of all genres of music. An embellished storyteller, he entertained us with unbelievable tales of a lifetime of adventure, uncredited inventions, battles conquered, and deathdefying luck. Luck that had to run out eventually, as is the fate of all mankind.

A Christian, who rejoiced in the Lord and relished in His strength, forgiveness, and limitless love. Jerry is now basking in His glory beside his best friend, occasional adversary, and bride, Ann. Words of Wisdom: “Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 Please come celebrate his life and his legacy with us.

Illinois agriculture remains resilient amid year of challenges, uncertainty

By RICHARD GUEBERT JR. Former Illinois Farm Bureau President Everyone can point to that year in their lives – the year when 23 inches of snow blanketed the state, the year an EF3 tornado ripped through a rural community, or the first holiday without mom or dad. There are some years that stick out more than most.

Last December, I called on everyone in Illinois agriculture to come together to make 2023 the “Year of the Farmer,” but for many Illinois farm families, this year was shaping up to be full of heartaches and hardships.

Tornadoes, hailstorms and derechos blasted much of the state in early spring and summer, exacerbating already challenging planting conditions and damaging homes. Severe thunderstorms producing dozens of devastating tornadoes tore through fields of farmland and rural communities.

Families lost their homes, and many were left with extreme damage to their livelihoods. Others lost family members, neighbors and friends.

Then drought hit nearly every corner of the state as farm production, equipment and land costs reached record highs, squeezing our pocketbooks. At the same time, global conflicts put a new focus on food security and the need to pass a modernized farm bill that meets the needs of all Americans.

Yet, in the face of uncertainty, our farm families remained resilient. Through thunderstorms, drought, inflation and global unrest, Illinois farmers dug in their heels and got to work producing 3 billion bushels of grain in the 2023 crop year. And, together, farmers across the country grew the largest corn crop on record, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Despite the challenges, Illinois farmers rose to the occasion.

We started off the year strong with the Illinois Farm Families coalition launching the “We are the 96%” campaign during Super Bowl LVII to bring awareness to Illinois’ nearly 70,000 family-owned farms. This campaign showed consumers that our farms might look different than they did 100 years ago, but that’s because they’ve evolved so that multiple generations of families

can continue farming together.

Illinois farmers also emphasized sustainability and conservation through embracing new technology and research. Nutrient stewardship field days put a focus on emerging strategies to protect water quality, and a new survey from the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, with support of Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) and several other agriculture organizations, released new data showing farmers’ progress in this space.

Last year, IFB debuted its Emmy-Award-winning documentary, “Sustaining Our Future: A Farm Family Story,” which told Ganschow Farms’ conservation story. IFB continues to highlight Illinois farmers’ stories, and I look forward to the coming launch of “Fields Apart: Rooted Together,” a three-part long-form video series showcasing shared characteristics, goals and challenges facing rural and urban farmers.

Life is full of challenges, both good and bad, and Illinois farm families know that it’s the many little things that can make a major impact. When I look back on all the progress we’ve made this year, I’m excited for the next chapter in Illinois agriculture.

Serving as president of IFB the past 10 years has been a true privilege. I’ve been very fortunate for the opportunity to steward this organization toward a bountiful future. I am proud to see my friends and colleagues Brian Duncan of Polo, Ogle County, and Evan Hultine of Princeton, Bureau County, elected to be IFB’s next president and vice president, respectively. I look forward to seeing the course they chart for IFB. As I wrap up my final column on behalf of IFB, I’d like to thank our members, current and former county leaders and managers for their engagement and dedication to Illinois agriculture. I am also thankful for the IFB directors who currently serve and who have previously served for investing their time and energy in leading this organization. And, finally, my family for their infinite support and patience while I was away for this role.

It was really all of them who gave me this opportunity to serve, and I am forever grateful for the sacrifices they made. May Illinois agriculture continue to prosper in 2024 and beyond!

BBB Tip: Holiday Returns and Exchanges

SBA Deadline Approaching for Physical Disaster Loan in IL for Severe Storms and Flooding ATLANTA – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) encourages businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters to apply for a disaster loan before the Jan. 19 deadline.

Survivors in the declared Cook County, who incurred damage from severe storms and flooding on Sept. 17- 18, should apply for a physical damage disaster loan by Jan. 19, 2024. Disaster survivors with insurance should not wait for their settlement before applying for physical damage. SBA will work with your insurance to reduce or repay the loan.

To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, applicants should register at DisasterAssistance.gov or download the FEMA mobile app. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free helpline at 800-621-3362. Stores are not legally required to accept exchanges or give refunds unless the merchandise was defective or misrepresented.

While most retailers do offer refund and exchange programs, policies vary greatly from one store to another. Be sure to doublecheck policies this holiday season, even if you are familiar with the brand, as stores can change their policies whenever they want.

The following tips should help to make your holiday returns run more smoothly: Get to know store policies. Before you make a purchase, find out if the store has a return policy and, if so, how it works.

Understand that many retailers change their policies for the holiday season. If the store allows returns or exchanges, find out if you need to pay a restocking fee. Ask the seller if they offer cash refunds, exchanges, or only store credit. Store policies are usually posted at the check-out counter or printed on the back of receipts.

Understand online store return policies. If you are shopping online, search for the seller’s return policy and read it through before clicking “buy.” Find out if they accept returns or exchanges and who pays for the shipping when an item is returned. In some cases, you can save on shipping fees by returning an online purchase to the local brick-and-mortar store.

Get the details on a product’s warranty. Most electronics and home appliances come with warranties that are to be fulfilled by the manufacturer, not the retailer. Find out how the store handles returns and repairs if an item stops working or needs replacement

parts. Will the retailer ship the item to the manufacturer for you?

Or will you need to deal with the manufacturer directly? Knowing the answers will leave you well-prepared for any future issues.

Keep your receipt and packaging. Most stores will only accept returns and exchanges if you can present the item with its receipt and original packaging. Always include a gift receipt with items you give, and hold on to any gift receipts you receive.

Bring your ID. Many stores ask to see your ID when you return an item to avoid holiday return scams. Sometimes retailers require you to bring your ID and the original form of payment.

If this is the policy of the store where your gift is from, you may need the assistance of the gift-giver in order to be reimbursed.

Make returns in a timely fashion. Almost all return policies are valid during a specific time period. Some stores modify their return period during the holidays, so don’t risk missing your chance to make your return. Take the item back to the store without delay.
