Shifting Wellness Attitudes Shape 2022 Fitness Trends In adjusting to the constraints of the pandemic, many Americans had to improvise where and how they work out. After months of adapting to a “gym anywhere” mentality and learning to accommodate more flexible workout schedules, this new fitness mindset is inspiring some larger trends for healthier living. “We’ve learned that wellness is not one-size fits all, and that it’s achieved by small habits like regular hydration that can really impact how you feel throughout the day,” said celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak, MsC. “Collectively, nourishing both body and mind together as one makes holistic health a sustainable lifestyle.” Pasternak and the experts at Propel Fitness Water are forecasting five fitness and wellness trends to watch for in 2022: Accountability Buddies When gym closures ran rampant, folks leaned on others for inspiration to get moving, so it’s no surprise working out in pairs (or more) is a continued way to focus on fitness. burnout may be common heading into 2022, so having a partner who gives you a healthy sense of camaraderie and competition can help push you to show up on days when you’d rather rest and stay committed to your goals. It also provides a sounding JANUARY 2022 board when you need suggestions for nutritious recipes or fresh at-home cardio ideas. Versatility in Gym Spaces and Schedules When a large segment of the workforce started working from home, the rituals of before- and after-work gym visits fell by the wayside. People grew more accustomed to improvising where they work out, whether it was their neighbor’s garage, their living room or a running path in the city. As exercisers are less beholden to studio or gym schedules, the “gym anywhere” mentality is a level of flexibility many are holding on to, even as they ease back into more normal work routines. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My Home has been on the market for months now with no offers. My home needs some updating, but I know it is worth what I am asking for it. I have had few showings. Any suggestions? Answer: A Sellers Lament: It’s been 53 weeks since my house went for sale. My home must be invisible here on Timberline Trail. Buyers should be coming round after round, Because I buried St Joseph into the ground. The Realtor said it needs some cleaning and shining. And to transfer my energy to updating, not whining. I’m changing some fixtures and adding new floors, In hopes to see more buyers come through those ‘new’ doors. My plan must be working, more buyers are here. I can feel it coming, a sale is near. But another month passed, with no offer in sight, That light in the tunnel is not looking too bright. The Realtor said to lower the price. Then I told him my thoughts, which weren’t very nice. I’ll give it some thought, I disgustingly said, As he left my home, shaking his head. My house is worth more, I’ve lived here for years. So many memories and blood, sweat and tears. But I lowered my price, just as I was told. And a couple weeks later, my home finally Sold. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Do you ever pay attention to the little green mile-markers as you head down the interstate? We don’t pay much attention to them as we drive to our destinations. We focus on those signs that mark transitions, like the big signs that tell us its time to exit. But when I’m on a long journey, I often pay attention to the little green mile-markers. Every tenth one, ending with zero, is a little larger. They help you measure the passing of the miles, even though they don’t mark significant moments in your journey. The dawn of a new year each year is like that. The move from 2021 to 2022 is arbitrary, like a small green milemarker driven into the ground at an unremarkable spot on the highway of life. However, these regular mile-markers provide an opportunity each year to pause and reflect on the road travelled the past year. We can pause to remember specific blessings and joys received along the way, then thank God and others for them. We can reflect on the sorrows, sins and sufferings that darkened our path. These remind us of our frailty, fallenness, our need for Immanuel – God with us – and our need for God’s grace, earned for us by Christ, as we travel on. We can resolve anew to put our hand in the hand of God and trust that he alone can bring us through to everlasting good. “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the Valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion” (Psalm 84:5-7, ESV). Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church (cfcsh.org)

BBB issues Warning for Columbia City ammunition company

Better Business Bureau serving Northern Indiana has issued a warning for ammunition company Pine Valley Munitions located in Columbia City, Indiana. BBB has received 14 nationwide complaints since March 2021. BBB notified Pine Valley Munitions of a pattern of complaints, alleging the company fails to honor promised fulfillment and delivery of products. Consumers also report the company does not respond to messages or emails attempting to check on the status of unfulfilled orders. This pattern of complaints has remained unresolved and repeated attempts by the BBB to contact the company have gone unanswered. One Michigan consumer reports, “When I made my purchase, their website showed over 100 in stock and was not listed as a backorder. I have sent multiple emails with no response and phone calls go straight to voicemail. They give a four-week estimate on backorders, and it’s been over a month since I placed my order.” Pine Valley Munitions currently has an “F” rating with the BBB for failure to respond to consumer complaints. Use BBB’s tips to protect yourself when shopping online: Research before you buy. Use BBB.org and shopper reviews to do your homework before purchasing. Watch out for phony reviews, too. Be careful purchasing sought-after products, especially during the holiday season. The risk of online purchase scams rises during the holidays as more people are making online purchases, and scammers lure in victims by offering the most popular products of the season at great prices. Use secure and traceable transactions and payment methods. According to BBB’s research, those who paid with a credit card were less likely to lose money. Be cautious when paying by digital wallet apps, prepaid money cards, or other non-traditional payment methods. Visit BBB.org to learn more about payment types and how to use each safely. Report unsatisfactory purchase experiences to BBB. If you are unhappy with a purchase, file a complaint at BBB.org/complaints. If you never received what you paid for, consider reporting it to BBB Scam Tracker (BBB.org/ScamTracker) to help other consumers avoid being scammed. If you spot a scam, whether you’ve lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB. org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your story can help other consumers avoid similar scams.

Financial Advice Column

What are Your Financial Resolutions for 2022? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN As you know, 2021 was full of challenges. We were still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic when supply chains shut down and inflation heated up. So, if you’re like many people, you might not be sorry to see the year come to a close. But now it’s time to look ahead to a brighter 2022. And on a personal level, you may want to set some New Year’s resolutions. You might resolve to improve your health and diet, and possibly learn some new skills, but why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few ideas to consider: • Prepare for the unexpected. If you haven’t already created an emergency fund, now may be a good time to start. Ideally, you’d like to have three to six months’ worth of living expenses in this fund, with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid account. (If you’re retired, you may want your emergency fund to contain up to a year’s worth of living expenses.) Once you’ve got this fund established, you may be able to avoid dipping into long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as costly home or auto repairs or large medical bills. • Boost your retirement savings. The pandemic caused many us to reevaluate our ability to eventually enjoy the retirement lifestyles we’ve envisioned. In fact, 33% of those planning to retire soon said they started to contribute even more to their retirement savings during the pandemic, according to a study from Age Wave and Edward Jones. This year, if you can afford it, increase your contributions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. • Reduce your debt load. The less debt you carry, the more money you’ll have available

to support your lifestyle today and save and invest for tomorrow. So, this year, resolve to cut down on your existing debts and avoid taking on new ones whenever possible. You can motivate yourself by measuring your progress – at the beginning of 2022, record your total debts and then compare this figure to your debt load at the start of 2023. If the numbers have dropped, you’ll know you were making the right moves. • Don’t overreact to the headlines. A lot can happen during a year. Consider inflation – it shot up in 2021, but it may well subside in 2022. If you changed your investment strategy last year to accommodate the rise in inflation, would you then have to modify it again when prices fall? And inflation is just one event. What about changes in interest rates? How about new legislation coming out of Washington? And don’t forget extreme weather events, such as wildfires and floods. Any or all of these occurrences can affect the financial markets in the short term, but it just doesn’t make sense for you to keep changing the way you invest in response to the news of the day. Instead, stick with a strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You may need to adjust this strategy over time, in response to changes in your own life, but don’t let your decisions be dictated by external events. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop positive habits that can help you face the future with confidence. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

My 2022 Full Disclosures MIKE BUDER You may have noticed over the last 12 years that I sign off this weekly column not as Mike Buder Realtor or RE/MAX Agent, but Mike Buder “a local Christian Businessman”. I have been lectured by some that I should not sign off in such a way because it might offend some people. Lately it has been brought to my attention that some in my industry may have attempted to use my Christian faith against me when competing for business. It has been represented to me that others have said. “He does not work on Sundays” or 2. “He has younger children that he spends time with” other folks have said 3. “He will tell you to list your home at a lower price than I will list it for” and 4. “He will have a higher commission rate than I will charge you”. To all of these I say: “Guilty as charged”. You see, when I sign off this weekly column as “a local Christian Businessman”, this is not some #hashtag or promo title to get business; this is the core of who I am. We live in a culture that year after year is becoming more hostile towards the God of the Bible. Our society keeps pushing this Kool-aid down our throats called political correctness. So, if you have been considering using my services then you should know upfront that I try to live my

life and conduct my business according to God’s word. 1. I strive not to conduct any business on Sundays (Exodus 20: 8-11). 2. I time manage my weekly schedule to allow quality time to teach and enjoy the children that my wife and I have been blessed with (Deuteronomy 6: 6-7). 3. I will only be upfront and honest regarding the value and pricing options of your home (Ephesians 4:25) and 4. I will also explain to sellers how broker compensation affects the saleability of their homes in today’s market (Romans 4: 4). The interesting thing about the folks who criticize my faith and the way I conduct my business is that not one of them has more experience, nor sold more homes… I don’t point this out to boast….. because any gifts or wisdom that I possess came from God and….to Him be the glory. Wishing you and your family a blessed New Year! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. Your comments are always welcome. Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman

Photo provided by St. Xavier University. Elizabeth Buksa, a 2019 graduate of Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, graduated with dual majors from St. Xavier University after only five semesters. She will begin her career at Jupiter Aluminum in Hammond in January. –––––––––––––––––––––––

When Elizabeth Buksa, a 2019 Bishop Noll Institute alumna, graduated from St. Xavier University Friday (Dec. 10), she did so after only five college semesters – with a double major, three seasons of playing college volleyball and an internship all under her belt. Thanks to the 26 college credit hours she earned as a student at Bishop Noll and seizing an opportunity to take more online courses during the pandemic, Buksa has achieved her goals of graduating early and finding a full-time job in her field. Taking dual credit courses at Bishop Noll put Buksa at an advantage by almost a year, she said. She entered St. Xavier’s business school pursuing majors in digital marketing and management and taking 18 credit hours each semester. She also found success playing college volleyball, which she dreamed of since playing volleyball at Bishop Noll. “I always had this passion for it because it related to life,” said Buksa, of Munster. “Volleyball is essentially a game of mistakes. Everyone is going to make a mistake on the team, but it’s how you learn from the mistake and build yourself up. I think that sport relates to life, and that’s why I was passionate about it.” Buksa credits Bishop Noll teacher Marisa Renwald with helping make her college dreams come true. “It was a combination of what I learned from her in English and mass media. I liked how she taught her students and pushed them at the same time,” Buksa said. “She really improved my writing skills, and that has helped me so much along the way. It’s such an important aspect that I’ll be doing in my job as well. She also took time after school to show me how to put volleyball recruitment videos together. She helped me be able to play in college.” Although two of Buksa’s three college seasons were affected by COVID, her volleyball team broke several school records during her last season. St. Xavier’s 18-0 record in conference play was the school’s first undefeated season. The team qualified for the NAIA nationals and, although it ultimately lost in South Dakota, Buksa said it was a fun experience. “(College volleyball) was definitely different from high school with all the traveling. I had to learn how to manage my time if I had to miss class … doing work on bus rides is very difficult.” During her second year at college, all courses transitioned online due to the pandemic. She found a way to turn that into an opportunity by doubling up on coursework. “The second semester we were online, I was taking 27 credit hours with only two of those classes in person. I didn’t plan on graduating in three years – I was just revamping my schedule my second semester.” After that, she realized if she continued to work hard, she could graduate early and achieve her goal of heading into the workforce. Of all her achievements in life, she said she is most proud of being able to graduate in five semesters without taking any summer courses. While at St. Xavier, a Catholic university in Chicago, Buksa said she was able to branch out and get involved in everything the school had to offer. She was a peer tutor and taught math and

economics courses in addition to working as a professor assistant for a college algebra class. She also served as marketing director for the Student Activities Board, which planned oncampus events for students. In January, Buksa will reach her careerlaunching goal when she takes on her new role as a marketing and human resource generalist at Jupiter Aluminum Corp. in Hammond. Following a summer internship with the aluminum scrap recycling company, she stayed on board working one to two days a week, as her college schedule allowed, with her boss giving her the flexibility she needed. She said finding the right internship was a challenge, and the pandemic affected the types and number of internships available. “I knew that experience would help me a lot,” she said. “I was researching constantly on job boards and looking at corporations nearby that offered internships. I was so drained from having classes online for three semesters, I really wanted an in-person internship. “In marketing, many jobs were remote. I really had to broaden my horizons and, thankfully, I chose a major that allowed me to do so. I can now do a lot in the business sector, so I looked into human resources. The HR field is a people person job.” The oldest of five siblings, Buksa said her parents, Dan and Julie, always taught her to set a good example for her siblings. They include Mary, Bishop Noll Class of 2021; Luke, a current BNI junior; Grace, a BNI sophomore; and Abigail, a student at St. Thomas More School in Munster. “We try to go above each other’s goals, but we do so in a way that’s friendly and we’re all very close,” she said. “They ask me for advice and help, but they also do a great job at mapping out what they want to do with their life. They all have skills that they excel in. Even though we are super competitive with achievements, we’re all going to be doing something different based on our individual skill set.” Buksa’s father, Dan, is a 1984 graduate of Bishop Noll. Elizabeth said he had already set in stone that his children would attend his alma mater. “He has a very strong belief in Catholic education and, because he was a graduate of Bishop Noll, he specifically chose that for what they have to offer in education and faith.” “As a Bishop Noll alum, it is one of the joys of my life that my children are able to follow in my footsteps at Bishop Noll,” Dan Buksa said of the investment made in his children’s future. “For me as a parent, entrusting the spiritual, academic and athletic development of my children for part of the day to an institution that has guided young people for 100 years now is a true blessing. This journey has been worth every sacrifice that my wife and I have made.” Now in its 101st school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education, including the highest graduation rate (99%) of any high school in Lake County over the past six years. In addition, Noll’s 95 graduates of the Class of 2021 received $8.1 million in college scholarship offers. Noll is part of the Diocese of Gary, offering a discount to Diocesan families, and participates in the Indiana School Choice program.

WOODROW WILCOX On December 20, 2021, an 86-year-old woman visited my office for help. She and her husband are clients from Portage, Indiana. While I made phone calls to help her, she told me why she and her husband came back to our insurance agency. “We were with your agency a few years ago. We had a medical bill problem and you took care of it. Then, a couple years ago, someone talked us into using an insurance agency to help their friend or relative who had started an agency. After we tried it for a year, I told my husband that I wanted to go back to using Senior Care Insurance Services because if we have a problem, Mr. Wilcox is there to help us. The agents are very good, too. They counsel us to find what we need. They don’t push one insurance company all the time. They listen to us and help us find a good policy with a good company,” the client said. I appreciate the compliment of this client about me and about the insurance agents at our firm. Everyone at this insurance agency works hard and cares about our clients. Since

I started working here in 2003, the firm has grown from one office with three agents and some staff to five offices with almost a dozen agents and almost a dozen staff. This firm would not have grown from one office to four offices in only seven years if we were not doing something correctly. The help with a Medicare related medical bill that the client from Portage mentioned is my specialty. Helping our senior citizen clients with Medicare related medical bills without charge shows that this insurance agency gives customer service that “goes the extra mile” for the client. If you don’t use an insurance agency that has such a high level of customer service, why not switch to one that does? Our agency does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available from bookstores and online.

BBB Serving Northern Indiana Welcomes New President/CEO Current COO and former board chair, Rick Walz, will assume duties Jan. 1 _______________________________ Walz began his career in retail management in the Greater Cincinnati area with a regional discount department store and with a local retail hardware store chain. This was followed by more than 30 years of business development and management experience in the hardware and building materials industry with two major national hardware and building materials cooperatives. He also managed a large local HVAC company. Walz is very familiar with the BBB missions. He began his BBB career as Vice President/ COO in 2017 after serving on the BBB Board of Directors for 14 years, including a term as board chair. Walz says he plans to build on BBB’s 100year history of supporting small businesses. He hopes to use his experiences to serve as a resource to small business owners. “My career experiences and service to the BBB Board of Directors have provided me with the ideal background to carry on the important work of the BBB,” Walz said. “From managing businesses to working with successful business owners all over the country, I understand the challenges faced by small business owners and want BBB to be a resource to help them

prosper while helping connect consumers with businesses and charities they can trust.” With Walz’s background in sales and marketing management and general management, BBB’s Board of Directors felt he brought a host of skills to the BBB leadership that would uniquely qualify him to lead the Northern Indiana BBB team. “Rick has already improved all areas of the Operation as V.P,” said Tom Antisdel, BBB Board Chair. “We look forward to Rick increasing the relevance of the BBB mission and providing even more value to the member companies who continue to do business the right way.” Walz is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University. He lives in Fort Wayne with his wife, Joyce. They have three children; Dr. Rick Walz of Noblesville; Dr. Patrick Walz of Dublin, Ohio, and Amanda Walz of Arlington, Virginia. They also have 4 grandchildren. Rick and Joyce enjoy traveling and spending time with their family. Walz takes over for BBB President/CEO Marjorie Stephens who retires on Dec. 31, 2021.
