No Questions, No Answers, Just the Magic of Christmas!

Inspired and rewritten from an old classic real estate poem:

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. My signs were all out and brochure boxes loaded. The ad copy in and the lock boxes coded. I just wrote an offer from that 1 perfect buyer, Gosh its so low…and they won’t go higher. So I call up my seller with the not so good news. And they agree to meet with me…nothing to lose

The sellers speak up, let’s do $5000 more, If the buyers wont accept it, then you can leave through that door. So I call the buyer right there on the spot, I need to know if they’ll accept it or not. The buyers said Yes! We have a deal. You have no idea how happy we all feel. So I stop and pick up some food for my own Christmas treat. Head home to chill out and put up my feet. When I drive up to my house, it is such a great sight. All lit up for the holidays with the lights oh so bright. A smile crosses my face, as I thought it just might. Happy Holidays to All, and to All a Good Night”!

THE REASON FOR THE SEASONChristians of all religions are preparing for the remembrance of the Birth of Christ, celebrated on December 25th in the Western churches and a week later in the Easter Orthodox churches. However, things are so changed this year, globally and locally that many of us are saddened over the loss of many of our Catholic churches, per Renew My Church in Chicago and the suburbs. But as believers already know, the church is not in a building or congregation. The church is in our hearts. As I took this picture of the manger in the St. Michael Church field, in Schererville, IN behind me cars were flying by along US 30 , a hum of automotive muscle and determination apparently not caring about the Manger scene; while the depiction remembered the most important person in the world, newly born, laying helpless in a straw bed in an animal shelter. As we celebrate Christmas differently this year, one thing remains the same......THE REASON FOR THE SEASON! ***

Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana Recruiting Team For “God” In The Workplace Five New Restaurants Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

MIKE BUDER Let’s flash back to Christmas Eve 2013. I was enjoying a Christmas celebration for employees of one of the family owned companies that I work with. The phone rang and the secretary picked up the phone. Her intro and outro were pleasant enough, but there was no mention of the holiday. The owner of the business asked her why. “I don’t want to offend anyone,” she said. “I happen to know that you celebrate Christmas,” he said. “Our family is a Christian family and we celebrate Christmas. I want you to feel comfortable wishing people a Merry Christmas if you so choose.” It was a courageous statement and one that made me proud to work with this family-owned business. Many people today think that we must be politically correct in our interactions with others, especially in our businesses. If you ask me, it’s pretty sad. We live in a country where men and women have fought for centuries so that we could have the freedom to express our beliefs. In the past century, we’ve seen movements such as that of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. to ensure that people of all colors and faiths have equal rights. We’ve seen political fights so that people can express their love for whoever they want-whether they be opposite or same sex. In Germany, we fought against the oppression of all these people under Hitler. We’ve fought for the greatest ability to express who we are as individuals…and yet when it comes to our faith or religion, so many people suddenly feel silenced. I am not offended when

someone wishes me a Happy Hanukah, Kwanza or any other holiday that I don’t’ celebrate. I appreciate the fact that some of the things I express about my faith get some people fired up. And that’s ok! The men and women who fought and died for this country did so just as much for your right not to believe as they did for my right to express my belief. I’m not really sure when people’s “feelings” outweighed the rights of other people to talk about faith. I don’t discriminate when it comes to the businesses we work with. I don’t have a problem working with people of all faiths or for that matter no faith. But I personally respect and appreciate business owners who aren’t afraid to talk about God. I believe we find God everywhere we look. He’s in every faith, in every flower, in every interaction and in every child. I don’t preach to my clients and co-workers, but I’m also not afraid to have a conversation about God. How about you? Does God have a role in your workplace in any way, shape, or form? Oh and by the way – Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and God bless you and your family! LETTERS WERE RETURNED WOODROW WILCOX

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD “In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered” (Luke 2:1, ESV). So begins Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth. Decrees impact our lives. New laws. Executive orders. Court rulings. Changes to the tax code. Jury duty. Your business shuttered in a covid-19 lockdown. 2000 years ago, “a decree went out from Caesar Augustus.” Augustus was undisputed Lord of the Roman world. When he said, “Jump!” people said, “How high?” Caesar decreed “that all the world should be registered.” Regional rulers were free to conduct the census as they chose. Since the Jews identified strongly with their ancestors and their towns of origin, it seems that King Herod had them travel back to their ancestral towns to be counted. “All went to be registered, each to his own town” (Luke 2:3). Imagine the disruption! Let’s say your roots are in Jackson, Mississippi. You run a small business. You’re thankful for steady

work and enough to pay the bills. Suddenly the government decrees, “Report to the census office in Jackson on December 29.” Not only will you lose four days of income; you face unplanned travel expenses. Caesar’s decree disrupted the lives of Joseph and Mary. He had to shut down his carpentry business. She, nine months pregnant, had to make a four-day trip… on foot! A mandated trip to Bethlehem, Joseph’s ancestral town. But whose decree was it, really? 700 years earlier God had decreed that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Behind the decree of Augustus is the decree of God himself! No matter what other decrees disrupt your life, his decree has the last word. His decree ensures the redemption and ultimate well-being of all who entrust their lives to King Jesus.

On December 14, 2020, two letters were returned to me at our office in Merrillville, Indiana. The letters had been sent to a medical service using one of the addresses on the bill to our client. When I send a letter to help one of our clients with a Medicare related medical bill problem, I regularly send it to more than one address of the medical biller. I do this for several reasons. Often, one address is for the service that mailed the bill and another address is for a bank service to receive and cash payments. Also, I question the client whenever possible and search the internet or make phone calls to find the correct person or department that could help fix a medical bill problem. Sometimes, letters get returned despite the fact that I used the address that was right on the bill. Having a returned letter with markings from the U.S. Postal Service is clear evidence that our client tried to contact a medical biller. If there is a problem with getting the bill resolved, I have evidence that the biller used a false address to contact our client

and ask for a payment. Having this evidence shows that I really made a good effort to help our client and that the medical biller caused the problem with resolving the bill. Want To Work Remotely Forever? 5 Key Factors Working from home is the new normal for millions of Americans, and many companies are planning to make the move permanent even if vaccines bring an end to the pandemic. Whether that’s the case at your company, your bosses are giving you an option, or if you want to make a case to them to work remotely, there are important matters to consider, says Cynthia Spraggs (www.virtira.com), a veteran of working remotely and author of How To Work From Home And Actually Get SH*T Done. “The pandemic may result in something I’ve advocated for years – more people working remotely,” says Spraggs, also the CEO of Virtira, a completely virtual company that helps other businesses work virtually. “But making this kind of transition permanently, whether full-time or part-time, can have a major impact on both your career, finances, and your personal life. “It’s more than just the dynamics of getting your home workspace set up properly for the long haul and having the right mindset to perform even better than you would in the office. Will your work relationships suffer? Your family and personal relationships? Your career trajectory? Is relocating a good idea financially?” Spraggs offers these key points to consider about working remotely on a permanent basis: Consider possible salary changes and tax implications if relocating. “You need to ask this question if you’re considering relocating to work remotely,” Spraggs says. “Some employers will base compensation on location, and that means employees moving from a high costof-living area to a less expensive one could see their salaries reduced. Also, employees need to do their homework and see how their takehome pay will be impacted by taxes in their new location.” Determine your home-or-office comfort level. Is your life better in the long run working from home? “That question should

Financial Advice Column

include whether you miss your work colleagues and team synergy enough that Zoom doesn’t cut it,” Spraggs says. “Maybe social isolation is catching up with you and you need a hybrid-type balance, or you realize you want to be back in the office after all. The bigger question is how well can you manage your time working from home, or do family dynamics interfere?” Plan your pitch thoroughly. “If you have to sell your leadership team on working remotely full-time,” Spraggs says, “have specific examples of your work performance since you started working from home during the pandemic. And if you want to relocate, you can inform leadership about what advantages that might have for the company, like giving them a new presence in a certain region.” Keep an eye out for other job prospects. If you relocate, Spraggs says it’s important to consider what the job opportunities are in your new market, because layoffs are always a possibility. “And wherever you are,” Spraggs says, “remember that your next employer might not be on board with remote work.” Beware it could hurt your career prospects. If most of your company will be returning to the office, those who work from home either part-time or full-time might be at a disadvantage in terms of promotions or performance evaluation. “It’s important to be proactive about communicating with your manager and having a plan to keep them informed of your progress,” Spraggs says. “It’s a good idea to come to the office occasionally. You have to have some in-person time to build relationships with teams.” “Now is a good time to reevaluate your current work environment and how it could be if you continue working remotely,” Spraggs says. “A lot of people have enjoyed the freedom of it, but there’s much to consider if you want to make the new normal a permanent reality.”

Investment Lessons from 2020 SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN As the year draws to a close, it’s fair to say that we’ve all learned something about the social, political, physical and environmental forces that have affected everyone. And, in some ways, our lives will be changed, perhaps permanently. But as an investor, what lessons can you learn from 2020? Here are some to consider: • The markets look ahead. Here’s something many investors discovered in 2020: Investment prices don’t always move in the same direction as the overall economy. This might not have seemed apparent right after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in mid-February, as the overall economy and the stock market took big hits. But just about five weeks later, the markets began a rally that lasted several months. During this time, the economy also recovered somewhat, but still remains on weak footing. What can explain this discrepancy between the markets and economic activity? Essentially, economic numbers, such as the unemployment rate and gross domestic product (GDP), reflect what’s happening today, but the markets are always looking toward tomorrow, which means they are anticipating a stronger economic recovery and the results that come with it, such as greater corporate earnings in 2021. No one can say for sure what the future holds, but you can usually know the market’s opinion by its performance. • Opportunities will always exist for investors. Although the coronavirus seems unprecedented, the equity markets have rebounded from many crises before it. From war to global financial meltdowns, the market has seen it all. But even at the height of these events, when the markets might be most affected, individual segments or industries can do well.

For example, in the current environment, when many people have been forced to work and shop from home, and get their entertainment online, it’s probably not surprising that some parts of the technology sector have seen their economic activity grow, along with their stock prices. Here’s the key point: Investment opportunities always exist, especially in times of market stress – and smart investors will find them and incorporate them into their portfolios in a way that’s appropriate for their goals and risk tolerance. • Patience and discipline can pay dividends. As mentioned above, the stock market dropped sharply in the weeks immediately following the pandemic, but then gained steadily for months afterward. Investors who tried to “cut losses” and exited the market likely did so at the wrong time and missed out on the beginning of the upturn. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon – investors who overreact to market declines often find themselves on the investment sidelines just when a new rally begins. Rather than being reactive in this way, you may be better off sticking with a long-term investment strategy, and buying and selling investments only when it makes sense for your situation, such as when you need to diversify your portfolio. For many reasons, it’s unlikely that we’ll see anything exactly like 2020 again. But some of the investment lessons we learned are applicable in every year – so keep them in mind for 2021 and beyond. Majority of Illinois seniors more tech savvy from pandemic If there’s one group of people who have perhaps found the pandemic more frustrating, difficult and, yes, sad, than any other, it has to be our seniors. Closed off from many friends and family thanks to social distancing and sheltering in place, it has been a hard and lonely time for many. But, as many office workers have found, turning to tech has been a gamechanger. While tech has meant employees can work from home, via video-conferencing, it has also helped seniors keep in touch with their loved ones. However, tech isn’t always as straightforward to use as we might like to think (after all, it’s why IT departments exist!). So how have our seniors found this brave new world? GearHungry.com, the leading resource for reviews of gear, gadgets and gifts, surveyed 3,000 65+ year olds to find out how they coped,

and overall, a significant majority of Illinois seniors (62%) said their understanding of technology has actually improved since the start of the pandemic. They know what tabs to click on, what virtual buttons to press, and - most importantly of all - how to unmute their microphones! And they’ve not just had to read a manual, either; 38% of seniors said their kids or grandkids have spent time with them this year, explaining how everything works. Undoubtedly being able to use technology has helped people feel less alone, and 55% of seniors say this is the case. And 73% of respondents (below the ages of 55) said they had made more of an effort to connect with elderly friends and relatives this year. That said, most of them are going to keep going with the tech connections, as they don’t want to risk

anyone’s health: 63% of people responsibly said they’ll avoid seeing extended family this Christmas in order to protect them from any risk. So what are the best ways to stay in touch over the festive season? GearHungry.com have created an interactive slide show showcasing the best video software to do so. ‘It seems tech has come to the rescue of many people this year,’ says Seiji Ishii, Editor in Chief at GearHungry.com, ‘and most importantly to that of our older friends and relatives. It can be harder for seniors to leave the house in any case, and it makes things worse when they are obliged to stay at home. Video software has undoubtedly played a key role in mental health among seniors since the start of the pandemic.’
