Christmas Giving

JANICE MINTON-KUTZ

PAUL AND JACKIE WORK THE MEAT COUNTER AT ROBS DELI: The popular Rob’s Meat, Chop and Deli at their new location (1102 Fairview Drive, Dyer, Indiana just off US 30) was at it’s holiday bustling best last weekend when N 2 N visited. Crowded but no waiting thanks to staffers like Paul and Jackie who take orders with a smile. They are pictured in front of the steak section (T-bones, Porterhouse, Rib Eye among so many different cuts.) The new store also sports a complete deli section with specialty sandwiches, and lots more. Go there and say “hello.” ***

NORTHWEST INDIANA ALIVE WITH CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: This giant Santa Claus presides over the corner along 119th Street in Whiting. The stores and shops are all decorated for the season and families, masked and careful are enjoying the season. In some towns in Northwest Indiana it is still possible to have a sit down meal (such as along Indianapolis Blvd in Highland south of Ridge) but best to call ahead to find out if they are doing dining in as well as carry out. The rules change often. ***

CHRISTMAS WAITING TO SEE THE VET AT RIDGE ANIMAL HOSPITAL IN LANSING: Our Lasa Alphas rescue Christmas, (found him at Christmas time in the Cemetery) is a big fan of Ridge Animal Hospital. He doesn’t mind going there at all. Holding him is hubby Larry Kutz surrounded by festive holiday decorations in the waiting room. We all have to mask and distance ourselves but feel comfortable there. It seems the CDC Covid 19 rules and regulations color our lives from A to Z these days. So happy Ridge is here to keep our pets safe and healthy. Thanks to Owner/Veternarian Dr. Kerri Katsalis and her team--Mary, Becky, Chris, Jennifer, Angel and Ale for making our visit so pain free and pleasant! *** PHOTO OP--CHRISTMAS STAR SET TO APPEAR DECEMBER 21ST: Visable for the first time in 800 years, the alignment of Jupiter and Saturn, dubbed the “Christmas Star” makes an appearance on Monday December 21st in the Chicago area. According to published reports the event is called a ‘conjunction.’ The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn happens every 20 years but this year the planets are really close to each other. This has not happened for 400 years, since circa 1623 in Galileo’s era. I hope everyone will try and capture this event. I know I’m going to have my IPhone ready to get some once in a lifetime pictures! ***

MIKE BUDER I ask, what is your definition of giving during this Christmas season? Christmas is celebrating the life and birth of Jesus Christ who gave his life for us – for our sins…hundreds of years later we celebrate this with an abundance of gifts in a material form that society tells us we have to – to sustain the prosperous economy. To compete with the Jones’, to have the next best thing for the year, to show your love through a price tag, style, or brand. Is this truly giving or multiplying what you’ve been doing throughout the year for the loved ones surrounding you (wife, kids, sister, mom, etc.)? Are they in “need” of 8 gifts under the tree totaling $800.00, racking up your credit card debt and most likely ending up in the back of the closet or donated 6 months later. Please – remember what Christmas is all about. Christmas is not about going into debt financially and emotionally. It is about helping the elderly neighbor shovel her walk, giving that extra change or dollar in the bucket for the frozen volunteer ringing the bell outside of the store your walking out of. Christmas is giving your time to donate to the local shelter whether it’s

blankets, money or service. How about giving blood to the American Red Cross (they have great cookies). Since the time of Christ’s birth, the spirit of giving gifts has been present in the mind of each Christian as he or she commemorates the Christmas season. Our Heavenly Father gave us his son, Jesus Christ. This precious son gave us his life, the atonement and victory over the grave. What will you and I give for Christmas this year? Let us in our lives give to our Lord and Savior the gift of gratitude by living his teachings and following in his footsteps. It was said of him that he “went around doing good” (Acts 10:38). As we do likewise, the Christmas spirit will be ours. Merry Christmas to you and your family. RICHARD ZEKVELD God had just made the mother of all promises – that he would raise up a descendant of the woman (Eve) to crush the Serpent’s head. Thus, began the epic fight – Son vs. Serpent – that has continued, round after round, throughout human history. It is a fight to the death. God’s Son Jesus dealt Satan a mortal head wound when he took our place to defeat sin, Satan and death on the cross. One day he will return to crush the Serpent’s head for good. All who belong to Jesus through repentance and faith will share in that victory. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20a). In Genesis 3, God also gave us a glimpse of how Eve’s Son would save fallen humanity. “And the LORD God made for Adam and his wife garments of skins and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21, ESV). After rebelling against God, Adam and Eve felt guilty, ashamed and exposed. They tried to cover up. In our fallen condition, we still behave this way today. We mask our sin, hurt and shame. We excuse, minimize and justify our sin. We shift the blame to others. But God revealed his better plan to cleanse our guilt and cover our shame. He made garments of skin for Adam and Eve and clothed them. Where do skins come from? Some creature had to die to surrender those skins! So began the long history of sacrifice. Someone must die in our place to remove our guilt and cover our shame. This points to the sacrifice of Jesus. His blood washes away our sin. He clothes us with his righteousness. In Christ, we are cleansed and covered for our calling to love and serve God and others again.

Question: Our buyers recently had a home inspection performed on my home. The inspector said the fireplace damper is broken. I haven’t used my fireplace in years. We have had 17 Christmases in our home, so I’m sure the damper was damaged by the fat guy in the red suit coming down our chimney. Why should I be responsible to make that repair? Answer: We assume you mean Santa Claus. I think the jolly old man who brings happiness to millions of children & families every year, deserves a bit more respect from you. Since Santa visits millions of homes every year, there are bound to be a few accidents. We once had a few roof shingles break off from what was probably caused by Santa and his reindeer team. Since Santa’s visits have been very special to our family, we consider this as normal Holiday maintenance and had no problem making the repairs.

Mr. Seller, the broken damper is a safety issue. Your new buyers have every right to insist that you fix the chimney damper. Failure to do so could terminate the contract on your home. We suggest you fix the safety issue with your home, move towards a successful closing and be happy knowing that your new buyers will be safe in their new Home. Here is something else you should know: Blaming Santa for this broken damper is most definitely going to put you on His “Naughty List.” You may want to reconsider your accusations. Mom On Money

Merry Christmas and a Happy (financial) New Year from Mom on Money! NANCY ZEKVELD I’m sure you’ll hear that phrase many times over the coming weeks but I hope that having a happy financial New Year caught your eye. Maybe you think it’s not even possible for you this coming year, or maybe you’ve just not thought much about it. I’d encourage you that it’s more in your control than you think, and that our beliefs can shape our future. In fact, people don’t often think that they can do something because of ‘limiting beliefs’. They can be beliefs that we don’t realize hold us back. Things like “I can never be debt free”, “I’ll never be able to save,” or “I’ll never be able to stop relying on credit cards”. The opposite of a limiting belief is a liberating truth! You can live well. You can become debt free. You can prosper. For these truths to be a reality I’d encourage you to spend some time writing down your financial goals for next year. Writing forces you to clarify what you want. It provides a way to review your goals and take the next most important action. It helps you to overcome resistance and enables you to see and celebrate your progress. The first goal might be to build your first ever budget, cut up your credit cards, and book in an appointment with a professional credit counselor for a free appointment on debt relief options before the end of January. February could see you pick a plan and set it up and then each month you can track the payments you’re making to reduce your debt. I promise that seeing reductions in debt will make you feel great!! If you want to really stick to it my biggest tip is to remember your “why.” The reason will keep you motivated. Getting debt free is a good thing but what’s your motivation? Is it so you can build up savings for a house or a trip? Or is it to reduce the stress so you can be more present with your family? Maybe you want to teach your kids responsible financial management. The “why” is personal to you, but whatever it is, that is what will keep you sticking to the plan to achieve your goals. Nancy is Center Manager for the CAP Debt Help Center, helping people in debt in the South Suburbs of Chicago. She has received CAP training and comprehensive money management training by AFCPE. If you’re struggling to pay bills, feel overwhelmed with any debt, including medical or student loans, reach out for free local credit counseling service. 708-866-5577. Nancy is wife to South Holland Pastor Richard and mom to Anton, Annika, Autumn, Augustin and Adamina.

Speaking Of Seniors

Financial Advice Column

HOSPITAL REGISTRATION GOOFED BILL WOODROW WILCOX On December 10, 2020, I made a three-way call with a client from Calumet City, Illinois. The call was about a bill for $498.36. In the conversation, the hospital representative admitted that the hospital registration staff goofed to cause the bill. The registration staff took the Medicare information but not the Medicare supplement information. She explained that caused the patient to get a bill for $498.36 when his insurance company should have received that bill. The hospital has corrected its error and sent the bill to our client’s insurance company. That should solve our client’s medical bill problem. For the average senior citizen, the Medicare system can be confusing. When errors occur and someone wants money from a senior citizen patient, what can the senior do to get the billing problem corrected and save money?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

Our clients can contact our agency. We “go the extra mile” to protect our clients from mistakes or fraud that could cost the client money. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, maybe you should switch to our agency. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by catching mistakes in Medicare medical bills. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available at Amazon, E-Bay, and other book sellers.

Have your retirement plans changed because of COVID-19? If so, you have plenty of company. Nearly 40 percent of those planning to retire say the pandemic has disrupted their intentions, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. You might have been thinking about retiring early – can you still do so? Even without a crisis, it’s not a bad idea to review your important life goals from time to time. So, in thinking about the possibility of early retirement, consider these factors: Your retirement lifestyle – Your ability to retire early depends somewhat on what sort of lifestyle you’re anticipating during your retirement years. If you think you’ll be traveling extensively or pursuing expensive activities, you might not be able to afford to retire as early as someone with more modest ambitions. Of course, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way of living in retirement – we all have our own dreams and preferences. But be aware that different lifestyles do carry different price tags – and have different effects on when you can retire securely. Sources of retirement income – Obviously, a key factor in knowing whether you can retire early is the amount of retirement income you can rely on. So, you’ll have to assess all your sources: Social Security, any other pensions you might receive, and your investment portfolio, including your 401(k) and IRA. The amounts you receive from these sources will depend on a variety of factors. For Social Security, the longer you wait until collecting, the larger your monthly payments (although they will “top out” when you reach 70, excluding cost-of-living adjustments). In regard to your investments and retirement accounts, you’ll need to establish a withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for the length of time you expect to be retired. So, by adjusting these variables – taking Social Security earlier or later, taking more or less money from your retirement accounts – you can help determine if the retirement date you had in mind is viable. Your feelings about work – Your goals are not static – they can change in response to any number of reasons, both external and personal. When you first decided you wanted to retire early, you might have been motivated by, among other things, a weariness of your current job. But has that changed over time? Have you found new challenges that interest you at work? Or, if you were forced by the pandemic to work remotely, did you actually enjoy the arrangement and want to continue it? After all, many employers have found that their workers can be just as productive working at home, so, even when we’ve gotten past COVID-19, we might see a sizable shift in the geography of the workplace. In any case, if your feelings about work have changed in some way, leading you to think you could work longer than originally planned, you’d likely gain some financial advantages. You’d make more money, for starters, but you’d also keep building your 401(k) and IRA, and you could even possibly delay taking Social Security. The pandemic may lead to a reevaluation of many financial goals – and taking early retirement might be one of them. By thinking carefully about your situation and your options, you can come up with a course of action that’s right for you.
