The South Suburban College Women’s Soccer Team finish their 2021 season with a record of 16-4. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-––––––––––––––––––––––-

The South Suburban College (SSC) Women’s Soccer Team experienced their most successful season to date with an appearance at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament. Following this competition, one SSC student-athlete went on to be named First Team All-American by the NJCAA DII Women’s Soccer Committee. After defeating the Sea Devils of Cape Fear Community College 4-2 in the national tournament on November 16, the Lady Bulldogs came full circle as they faced the Hawks of Heartland Community College (HCC). The SSC Women’s Soccer Team fell to the Hawks 4-2 in their first game of the regular season on August 20. Although the Lady Bulldogs put their best foot forward on the field, they came up short to HCC on November 17 with a 4-1 loss, thus eliminating them from further tournament play this season. The Hawks of Normal, IL pressed on to inevitably win the 2021 NJCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship. “The first and last day of the season, I tell my student-athletes: God always gives you what you earn. Nothing less, nothing more,” said SSC Head Coach Tony González, who began coaching the Lady Bulldogs Soccer Team in the fall of 2017. “This year we received a bid to play in the national tournament and won our first match. When you reach the goal of having your school be seen at a national level, it brings credibility to the athletic program.”

The only other losses for the Lady Bulldogs during their 2021 season were to the Chiefs of Waubonsee Community College on October 23 (4-0) and November 6 (1-0). The SSC Women’s Soccer Team tacked 16 wins onto their record against all other opponents, including an exceptionally commendable 13-game winning streak during the regular season. Coach González added, “A lot of the girls on our soccer team are first-generation students. The experience of going to college and playing soccer at a national level can be life-changing for the student-athlete and their families. I want to keep that momentum going.” One of the leading forces behind the success of the Lady Bulldogs was Amaris González, who happens to be Coach González’ daughter. The freshman forward’s outstanding field play earned her recognition as First Team All-American. González scored four goals in two national tournament games, including a hat-trick against Cape Fear. She also led the division with 105 points, 118 shots and 29 assists on the season, and finished second in goals with 38. “I am so thankful to be able to play alongside such a talented team,” said Amaris González of Lansing, IL. “They helped guide me to get to where I am now as a student-athlete. I would not have experienced any accomplishments this season had it not been for every single one of the girls on the soccer team at SSC.”

I Challenged Bill for Lowell Client WOODROW WILCOX

On November 30, 2021, I reviewed a bill for a client from Lowell, Indiana. Then, I wrote a letter to the medical firm and challenged the accuracy of the bill to our client from Lowell. I challenged the calculations of the medical firm. It billed our client for a balance of $17.66. That may seem like a small amount. But a medical firm that makes mistakes on balances of small amounts will make the same mistakes that result in big amount balances. The point it to cite the miscalculation and get the firm to correct whatever is causing the false balances so that no patient is hurt with a false balance bill. In this case, I cited what the insurance company told me. First, Medicare approved only $29.05 of the original $142 charge. Second, Medicare paid 80% of that or $23.24. Third, the insurance company paid the balance of $5.81 which is the remaining 20%. That leaves a balance of zero. I told the medical firm that it needed to explain how it arrived at a

balance owed of $17.66. If it could not explain the balance of $17.66, then it should just agree with the insurance company records about the claim and reduce the $17.66 bill to zero. Whether the false bill is $17.66 or more than $4,000 as in another recent case, all the help that we give clients with such Medicare related medical bills is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” for our clients. It proves that we care about our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an agency that does? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through bookstores or online.

Lansing Municipal Airport to receive nearly $500,000 in State Funding

State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) announced a nearly $500,000 state investment to help maintain and upgrade the Lansing Municipal Airport on Friday. “The Lansing Municipal Airport provides good jobs and economic stability to our community,” said Sims. “The new funding will allow for improvements and new equipment for inclement weather conditions.” The 96 projects selected for funding will help meet the needs of airports large and small in both urban and rural communities. Projects will include planning, construction, reconstruction, development and improvement of public airports to increase safety and efficiency. Communities also will benefit from increased aviation access, good-paying jobs during construction and longterm opportunities for workforce expansion. Among the projects to receive funding, the Lansing Municipal Airport is set to receive nearly $500,000 for new airport snow removal equipment. “The Illinois aviation system is one of the largest in the nation,” said Sims. “I am proud of the state’s contributions to help maintain and develop one of city’s greatest economic engines after such a tough year.”

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD If you didn’t know the Greek alphabet before 2020, you’re learning it now, thanks to the naming of Covid-19 variants. Alpha, Beta and Gamma came and went. Delta has left its mark. And now, just in time for Christmas, the advent of Omicron fills the news. Bad news sells and stoking fear drives up ratings. Of course, Covid-19 is no joke. Maybe you will grieve an empty chair at Christmas dinner because of it. There is such a thing as healthy fear, leading to measured precautions. But unhealthy fear is a gateway to greater evil. Such fear makes us intolerant and inhospitable. It fuels polarization and division. It produces tunnel vision, fixated on what we fear to the neglect of people and priorities. This applies both to those who fear Covid-19 and to those who fear government coercion. This Christmas, look beyond the Covid-19 alphabet, with its alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and omicron variants, to the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, Jesus Christ who predates Covid-19, predestined it, exercises power over it and provides for us in it. And though Covid-19 become endemic, he will come a second time to put an end to it, along with all sin and misery. This Christmas, look beyond the government mandates that constrain our lives to remember that Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. No human power can take away your freedom to trust in Christ or to love him and others with the love he pours into you. At Christ’s first coming, he bore human sin and sickness to the cross to destroy both in our place. Look to him to forgive your sin and to fuel your faith and love in the face of your fears. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

FR. DAVE SIMONETTI ADDS 4 PM SATURDAY MASS TO CHRIST OUR LIGHT(ST. FLORIAN) MASS SCHEDULE: The iconic Catholic Church (the only one left now) in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago will now offer a 4 p.m. Saturday Mass at the church, 13145 S. Houston. Fr. Dave tried it out last week and 51 people showed up for the Mass. That was enough to convince him that enough worshipers would attend so he is considering making it ongoing. This is the 2nd week of advent going on the 3rd with all the reverence and anticipation of the birth of the Christ Child December 25th in Catholic Churches throughout the world! ***

CALUMET AREA INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION HOSTS 53RD ANNUAL LUNCHEON: The luncheon was attended by captains of Industry, rank and file and friends at the Beverly Country Club, 8700 Western Avenue, Chicago, Il Friday December 3rd, 2021. Guest speaker was Patrick Bloom, VP Government Relations Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. Mr. Bloom maintains oversight of the company’s government relations functions and has primary responsibility for matters relating to public policy, political affairs and maintaining Cliff’s relationships with policy makers at the local, state and federal levels of government. Pictured here prior to the event are Ted Stalnos, President of CAIC and one of the luncheons sponsoring members, Mr. Hale of First Midwest Bank and Trust. The festive event was modified this year to accommodate a scaled down staff at the Beverly CC and to comply with generally accepted spacing practices. As a positive note, Mr. Stalnos noted that while many organizations were not experiencing new members, CAIC actually gained many more new members during the 2020-2021 time frame! ***

MICHAEL GIGLIO AWARDED CAIC CHAIRMAN’S AWARD: Mr. Giglio, pictured here with his sister and colleague Geraldine Giglio of Calumet City Plumbing, (CCP) before being awarded the prestigious CALUMET AREA INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION “Chairman” Award during the 53rd annual luncheon at the Beverly Country Club Friday December 3rd, 2021, The recipient of the CAIC Chairman’s Award is chosen by the annual CAIC Chairman. BLAST FROM THE PAST: A going away party for beloved Coldwell Banker Secretary Michele Blodorn who had more than 32 years in with the company when she retired two years ago. Michele is pictured here with Janice Ruzich and Rita Berk at Region Ale in Schererville. Miss Michele to this day! *** A BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WHITE CASTLE HAMBURGERS: Got the munchies over the weekend and decided to have some ‘sliders’ for Sunday dinner. By now, leftover turkey was wearing thin on our taste buds. My favorite White Castles are the double cheeseburgers with the wonderful ‘secret sauce’ they put on them, ooozing all over the pickles and onions. Two are not enough and three are too many so hubby and I split one, while he enjoyed the craver case and saved some for later. WC celebrated 100 years in 2021, starting in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, by Walter Anderson and Edgar Waldo Billy Ingram, Sr. and now operates 375 locations in 14 states in the US. and has had had a variety of anniversary specials spread out over the past year. As a lifelong Chicagoan, I have enjoyed sliders over the years, conveniently located nearby. In fact, there are locations throughout the Midwest. However, I notice that not too many of them are located outside the Metro areas of our major Midwest cities, the exception being New York and New Jersey. My late cousin Ray Giometti moved to Denver in the mid1980’s to escape the summer allergy season, but missed his sliders. He would have us Fed Ex him frozen sliders every so many months. Whiting Robertsdale Historical Society has information on WC and some of the competitors that popped up over the years, that eventually closed. But the iconic sliders carried on! Whiting has a White Castle shop on 119th and Indianapolis. There is also one on Calumet and Chicago in Hammond so we don’t have to go too far if we get a ‘craving,’ for the delicious little sandwich. There are 93 White Castles in Illinois and 89 in Indiana, 53 in Michigan and only 2 in Wisconsin. Bon Appetit.

Financial Advice Column

Retirees Fear Becoming a Burden

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

It’s human nature to want to make things easier for our loved ones – and to have great concern about adding any stress to their lives. In fact, 72% of retirees say that one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. How can you address this fear? First, don’t panic. In all the years leading up to your retirement, there’s a lot you can do to help maintain your financial independence and avoid burdening your grown children or other family members. Consider these suggestions: Increase contributions to your retirement plans and health savings account. The greater your financial resources, the greater your financial independence – and the less likely you would ever burden your family. So, contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA, your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contributions, if offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also want to contribute to a health savings account (HSA), if it’s available. Invest for growth potential. If you start investing early enough, you’ll have a long time horizon, which means you’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of investments that offer growth potential. So, in all your investment vehicles – IRA, 401(k), HSA and whatever other accounts you may have – try to devote a reasonable percentage of your portfolio to growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based funds. Of course, there are no guarantees and you will undoubtedly see market fluctuations and downturns, but you can help reduce the impact of volatility by holding a diversified portfolio for the long term and periodically rebalancing it to help ensure it is aligned with your risk tolerance and time horizon. Keep in mind, though, that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market. Protect yourself from long-term care costs. Even if you invest diligently for decades, your accumulated wealth could be jeopardized, and you could even become somewhat dependent on your family, if you ever need some type of longterm care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health care aide. The likelihood of your needing such assistance is not insignificant, and the care can be quite expensive. In fact, the median cost for home health services is nearly $55,000 per year, while a private room in a nursing home can exceed $100,000, according to Genworth, an insurance company. To help protect yourself against these steep and rising costs, you may want to contact a financial professional, who can suggest an appropriate strategy, possibly involving various insurance options. Create your estate plans. If you were ever to become incapacitated, you could end up imposing various burdens on your family. To guard against this possibility, you’ll want to ensure your estate plans contain key documents, such as a financial power of attorney and a health care directive. It’s safe to say that no one ever wants to become a financial burden to their family. But putting appropriate strategies in place can go a long way toward helping avoid this outcome. Moving Forward There are times in life when we experience tribulations, ups & downs, health challenges, disappointments, and deep hurts. And, the list goes on. However, Jesus said in St. John 16:33b, “In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” And we, as Christians, must internalize the fact that God is with us at all times…..never to leave us or forsake us. So in these difficult times, we will purpose to regroup, refocus and know that we are overcomers and more than conquerors because Christ is with us. Philippians 4:13 states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” So when we experience the tribulations of life, we may fall down for a fleeting moment, but we get up because of Christ being with us and because of who we are in Christ. Amen Life is about growth (maturity) in Christ Jesus and moving forward in doing His will. We can’t get stuck in our tribulations and allow them to hinder our growth. Philippians 3:13-14 states, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Our faith in the Lord propels us to move forward. The scripture sums it up for us in James 4:8 where it states, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Therefore, we don’t succumb to tribulations because we choose to rise above them and continue to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. “God knows the thoughts that He thinks toward us, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give us an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11. So, we will reach our goals in Christ, continue to move forward and allow the Lord, who is with us, to have His perfect way in our lives as we submit to Him. Tis The Season For Serious Buyers MIKE BUDER This week I was on a listing appointment and the client asked, “Should I wait until after the holidays to list my home”? I have also had some sellers in the past call and say “no more showings until after the holidays”. The holidays could be the best time of the year to have your home on the market! People who look for homes this time of the year are SERIOUS BUYERS and not just out there to wear down your carpets. Who else would take their time to come look at a home in this hectic time of year, A SERIOUS BUYER OF COURSE. And…what better time to let them see your home beautifully decorated for the holidays. Buyers are more emotional during the holidays and your cozy warm home can cause emotions in a buyer you can’t get other times of the year. Serious buyers also have fewer homes to choose from during the holiday season, which means less competition for you and possibly a higher offering price. Starting in January there will be more homes coming to the market every day. Keep in mind an increase in supply heading into the spring market without an equal increase in demand (possibly due to expected interest rate escalation) can reduce demand and could cause prices to pull back again. Buyers have more time to look for a home with time off work during the holidays and winter vacation breaks. People stay home more in colder weather and online searches go way up. Traditionally many people have job transfers at the end of the year and they need to find new homes and won’t be able to wait until spring to buy. Some people want to buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. If you are planning to purchase another home, by selling now you could be a non-contingent buyer in the spring when many more homes are available for possibly less money. Maybe you will be able to enjoy the rest of the season knowing you sold your house because you didn’t put off showing your home during the more hectic time of the year! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. Your comments are always welcome. Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman

Superhero

A superhero or superheroine is a stock character that possesses superpowers, abilities beyond those of ordinary people, and fits the role of the hero, typically using his or her powers to help the world become a better place, or dedicating themselves to protecting the public and fighting crime. Superhero fiction is the genre of fiction that is centered on such characters, especially, since the 1930s, in American comic books (and later in Hollywood films, film serials, television and video games), as well as in Japanese media. 3 5 1

Pictured from left to right: SSC Trustee Tony DeFilippo, Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli and Mike Monaghan, former Executive Director of the ICCTA, and Vice-Chair John Daly. Monaghan presented the ICCTA Service Award to both Daly and DeFilippo in 2019.

In front of a socially distanced capacity crowd of family, friends and colleagues at Ravisloe Country Club, South Suburban College (SSC) Board Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli emotionally read from a “Resolution in Memoriam” of longtime Trustee and Vice Chair of the College’s Board of Trustees John A. Daly, Sr. at his Celebration of Life on November 29, 2021. “Whereas, Trustee Daly was a respected and popular Member of the College Board. His well-reasoned and insightful observations and proposals were warmly received by his fellow Trustees and served as the foundation of many undertakings which benefited the administration and the student body,” Zuccarelli remarked. “As testimony of the high regard in which he was held, he became Vice Chairman of the Board in 1994 and served in that capacity until he was called to contribute to a new constituency.” Zuccarelli, along with sons Kevin and John Daly, Jr., sister Mary Louise Pisone and State Senator Michael Hastings shared heartfelt memories, stories and life lessons of a man who dedicated his life to public service. “John’s political fund was called ‘People for Daly,’ but we all knew it really was Daly for people,” said Kevin Daly. In 1983, Daly was elected Alderman in the City of Oak Forest, serving the 4th Ward until 1989, when he became City Administrator. He became Administrator for the Village of Orland

Hills in 1994. A past Chairman of the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and member of the Southwest Conference of Mayors, Daly also chaired the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association’s Management & Finance Committee from 1996 until he retired from the Village in 2015. Daly served as a member of the SSC Board of Trustees since 1991. He passed away while still in office on November 11, 2021. A resident of both Oak Forest and Tinley Park, Daly was a strong advocate for local students and a champion of the college’s Oak Forest Center. He was also a generous supporter of the SSC Foundation where the Daly family has established the John A. Daly Memorial Fund to help future students in need. Donations may be made by check payable to “SSC Foundation” or online at: www.johndalyfund.givesmart.com Daly would have turned 72 years old on this night of celebration. His obituary is available at: https://memorials.lawnfh.com/johndaly/4781609/index.php Zuccarelli concluded, “Be it further resolved that this resolution be spread upon the records of South Suburban College for all to see and that a true copy hereof be delivered to the family of John A. Daly, Sr. as a sign of our respect and sympathy.” The resolution will be presented for passage at SSC’s December 9 Board Meeting, after which a complete transcript will be available at: www.ssc.edu

PROUD TO BE LOCAL SINCE 1987

SCHERERVILLE Ann Marie Davros “Nancy” (nee Perz), age 72, of Dolton, IL passed away peacefully on October 19, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of Jim Davros for 54 years. Loving mother of George (Carol) Davros, Frank (Sue) Davros, Angela Davros, and Nicole Davros (Charlie Alcala). Devoted grandmother of Tyler, Helen, and Jaclynn. Dearest sister of Kenny (Linda) Perz, and fond aunt of many nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by her parents (Frank and Helen Perz), three brothers (John, Richard, and Fred Perz), two children (Michael and David), one grandchild (Foster), and one nephew (Scott Perz). Ann worked as a server in the restaurant industry for over 40 years but was even more tireless in her own kitchen where her skills at cooking and baking were unparalleled. Although Polish by heritage, her skills at making delicious Greek food were cherished by family and friends. When she wasn’t in the kitchen trying out a new recipe, she could be found hanging out with her monthly poker group or at her favorite poker machine at the casino. She also enjoyed gardening and took joy in seeing hummingbirds visit her flowers and feeder. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life was held privately for family and friends on December 4.

December is National Egg Nog Month. Imbibe responsibly.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our home is up for sale, and we think we are going to get an offer very soon. We are worried about the home inspection. Our realtor said don’t worry about it without offering a reason. What are the main items that show up on the home inspection fix list? Answer: Having experienced hundreds of home inspections, we can tell you that there are a few issues that arise often: Improperly wired outlets. This is a common issue. You can buy a tester at Home Depot for $5 and plug this tester into each outlet. This will tell you if the outlet is wired properly. Also, outlets within 6 ft of a water source need GFCI protection. If your roof is old, consider having the roof inspected. If your roof report is good, just ask the roofer to write that he sees no roof problems on the invoice. No one wants to buy a home with a roof that needs repair or replacement. Install smoke alarms. Unless you’ve replaced them recently, now is a good time to replace the old with the new. Install/extend downspouts. Water should be directed about 4 ft away from the home’s foundation. This helps prevent seepage, which is not something you want as an issue on the inspection.

Make needed repairs to doors, locks, and windows. Windows should be able to open. Cracked glass should be replaced. Have your Furnace and Air conditioning checked and cleaned. Your service invoice should state that the HVAC has been cleaned and checked and is operating satisfactorily. Wipe away any exterior dirt off of the furnace so it looks clean. Repair any plumbing leaks. Mold can form quickly which is a major issue with buyers and it’s not good for your health. Buyers will notice how well cared for your home looks and this will help with your negotiations! This will also be valuable with home inspections, and the appraiser will notice this well cared for look. Remember, buyers are nervous and cautious. A home with a well cared for look, will calm those buyer fears. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home?
