Here Are 4 Pillars of Sustainable Wellness to Implement This Holiday Season Pillar #1: Make Small, Yet Impactful Nutritional Upgrades There are a number of factors that could limit our daily energy, but a few of the most influential ones include insulin response, mold toxins and artificial oils/sprays on our foods. Insulin is a chemical process in the body that helps to control blood sugar after eating/ drinking. When we ingest too much sugar and processed foods, there is too much insulin release in the bloodstream which results in weight gain and imbalance of energy. Mold toxins and sprays can be found in foods that are grown in an industrial setting where there is a need to make a lot all at once, such as processed meats, some wheat products, and processed dairy. This leads to inflammation in the body, depletion of energy, and brain fog. Quick ways to upgrade your daily routine to avoid the above: Swap processed snacks with nuts, olives, berries, avocado, hard organic cheeses Swap soda for green tea, coffee, club soda with citrus Cut out all foods that contain corn, sunflower, and safflower oils If you drink coffee, make sure you are getting healthy coffee! Pillar #2: Set Yourself Up For Quality Sleep Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for recovery, fat burning and clarity of thought. While we sleep, leptin and ghrelin hormones of hunger balance, cellular repair takes place and insulin levels come down. The glymphatic turns out, which sends cerebral spinal fluid through the brain, flushing out plaque and toxins. Sleep is a master when it comes to cognitive cleaning, muscle repair and hormonal balance. Quick ways to upgrade sleep: Set room temperature to 68 degrees or below Turn off screens or shift to night mode at least 30-minutes before bedtime Include natural sleep supplements in your diet: cava, magnesium, and reishi Pillar #3: Incorporate 20-Minutes of Movement Any type of exercise will have a number of physical and mental benefits. This includes slowing down the release of stress hormones, elevating metabolism to burn fat more efficiently, improving deeper stages of sleep, and boosting the production of hormones responsible for mental wellbeing. As exercise specifically relates to immunity, there are a few additional ways this practice can greatly improve your wellbeing.

Exercise immunology focuses on the ability to regulate the immune system through exercise, and slow down the effects of aging. Recent studies conducted by the Journal of Sport and Health Science show that immunity can be remodeled during the aging process. Daily exercise has resulted in a lower inflammatory response to bacterial change, longer telomere lengths. Quick ways to upgrade your workout regime: Interval training- pick any movement like squats or jumping jacks- apply speed to it (30 seconds as fast as possible, 30 seconds off- repeat for 10 rounds). Add coffee before exercise to increase fat burning. Listen to a podcast while taking a fast 20-minute walk Perform one minute of movement at the top of each hour during the workday Add in heavy weights to any fitness routine to accelerate the body’s natural fat-burning power Pillar #4: Improve Gut Health The gut microbiome is genetic material made up of bacteria, fungi and other elements that aid in digestion, regulation of the immune system and protection of pathogens. A staggering 90% of our serotonin (satisfaction hormone) is made in our gut! Once the serotonin is made it is transferred directly to the brain through the vagus nerve that runs along the spinal cord. There are a few things that occur, which hinders this process: 1. The lack of healthy bacteria and high inflammation in the gut makes it more difficult to process enough serotonin. 2. Environmental toxins and physical/mental stress create blockages in the pathway of the vagus nerve. The more stress and toxins in our daily life, the less likely enough serotonin will be delivered to the brain. If the vagus nerve is not transferring the crucial hormone for happiness to the brain, we are not going to feel good (no matter how many ice cream sundaes we eat). Quick ways to upgrade gut health: Incorporate probiotics into the diet: sweet potatoes, plantains, leeks, onions, asparagus and fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, kefir) Again, make sure that the coffee you’re drinking is healthy and sustainable Reduce the use of processed sugar (very inflammatory to the gut) Lower stress with any type of daily meditation, yoga, deep breathing or technology-free walks.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are considering taking our home off the market through the holidays. Any suggestions? Answer: When you look at your holiday calendars you may find the months already overloaded with seasonal obligations -- shopping, entertaining and more. It is understandable why you would be tempted to take your home off the market during the holidays. Better to just pack it in and start fresh in January, right? Not really. Many people take off work sometime during the season. The husband and wife are both off and want to see houses. We like the holidays because the buyers have more time, and they can look at homes together. Before you take your home off the market, consider the following points: Although buyer activity may appear to slow down, the buyers who are actively looking during the holidays are more serious. The home market is no more affected at Christmas than during other “busy” period. If that were so, the market would shut down throughout the year as families concentrate on spring weddings, June graduations, summer vacations, and Fall back-to-school activities. At Christmastime, our culture focuses on family and home. Preparing for the indoor activities of winter is one of the most enjoy-

able periods of family life. When is your home ever more beautiful and inviting? You have cleaned and decorated, and your home looks like a picture postcard. If the results are good enough for family and friends, they will surely be good enough to impress your buyers. Get the family team on board to do a five-minute blitz pick-up every morning to keep holiday messes to a minimum. With reduced inventories and motivated buyers, you will have all the members of the Multiple Listing Service on your team. If you do get a contract, you can arrange the terms to suit your needs. If moving during the holidays isn’t an option, you can put in the closing date of your choice. Most people can close 30 to 60 days after a contract is written, so there is plenty of time. Allowing buyers to view your home during this happy season lets them better picture their own family life in the attractive environment you have created. JOSH BOOTSMA Have you ever been given a gift so wonderful, thoughtful, and meaningful that you were speechless? Your mind darts around, trying to think of an appropriate action or words to somehow repay the kindness that’s been given to you. Eventually you realize all you can say is “thank you.” If you’re a Christian you know this feeling. The gifts God has given to us are astounding. They’re dumbfounding. The gift of salvation through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, the promise of an inheritance that includes a perfect existence into eternity, the reality of God’s daily looking out for us in our normal lives. And that’s not to mention the blessings of family, friends, church, a warm home, a working car, a job, a cute dog, a comfortable couch, good movies on Netflix, or perfectly seasoned chicken wings! Do you think there’s something you could do to repay God for the long list of things he’s given you? Something you could do that would make God say, “Oh, very nice. Now the scales are even.” Of course not. In this world of value and transactions, where we’re so concerned about receiving the most bang for our buck, where I invite you over for dinner and expect the same from you, where I expect to be invited to your wedding — and you expect me to give you a gift — and I expect an open bar and a good meal — and you expect a glittery card — and I expect a thank you card in return — GOD IS ABOVE IT ALL! As Isaiah 55 says, God’s ways truly are not our ways. He knows we cannot repay Him, and yet he’s given us so much — and he keeps giving! As you think of your many blessings this week, I encourage you to find both great humility and great joy in considering that the only thing you can give to God in return is thanks. Thanksgiving 101 MIKE BUDER If you are gathering with family and friends this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, here are some interesting historical facts that you can share…1. The 1st Thanksgiving was documented on November 21, 1621, a year after 102 English citizens fled England. They were commonly called “The Pilgrims” and anchored on the banks of Cape Cod. They arrived on a small ship called the Mayflower and the trip took 66 days. 2. The feast was said to be a 3-day event and was a celebration of a good harvest of squash, beans and corn. 3. They also celebrated the learning skills of hunting and fishing. In fact, the celebration feast was shared with North American Natives who had taught them to grow food, hunt and fish. Unfortunately, half the pilgrims had died of starvation the first year here so it was such a great celebration to be able to survive by living off the land. 4. Pilgrim, Edward Winslow, had written a letter about a “turkey hunt” before the celebration and many historians think this is why they conclude that turkey was on the menu but most speculate they did not have turkey at that first celebration. It was more likely that lobster, cod, goose and deer were served. 5. President George Washington acknowledged the grace and mercy of God’s provision in the “National Thanksgiving Proclamation” in America on October 3, 1789 and it was celebrated on November 26, 1789. 6. President Lincoln designated the 4th Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day in 1863 and annually ever since. 7. In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the date to the last Thursday in November as some years have 5 Thursdays instead of 4 and felt this

would boost retail as the country was in a depression but many states did not follow Roosevelt’s change and continued to celebrate on the 4th Thursday. In 1941, congress proclaimed the 4th Thursday as the national holiday. 8. More people celebrate Thanksgiving than Christmas since it is a historical holiday and not a religious one. 9. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan first gave turkey amnesty during his term. But President George W. Bush was the first Commander and Chief to formally pardon a turkey at the White House in the Rose Garden. This has been a yearly tradition and in 2015 President Barack Obama pardoned 2 turkeys named Honest and Abe. The pardoned turkeys are chosen from qualities of most well behaved and the largest of the flock. These turkey are given to a farm in Virginia to live out their lives without the threat of being served on someone’s table. This started out as a photo opportunity during the depression and is still celebrated annually. 10. Most Americans today celebrate Thanksgiving Day with a big dinner and by watching football games and parades. Please share these Thanksgiving historical events with your family and friends. Also, take time out to reflect on God’s provision and blessings. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours… If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-4184444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. Cook County Sheriff’s Office Hosts Fourth and Largest Free Vehicle Light Repairs Event

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN The Tuesday after Thanksgiving has become known as Giving Tuesday, when people are encouraged to donate to charitable organizations. If you’d like to take part in this special day, you’ll want to maximize the effectiveness and benefits of your charitable gifts. So, consider these questions: Is the charity reputable? Does it use its resources wisely? Most charitable organizations are honest and dedicated to helping their specific causes. But sometimes there are a few “bad apples” in the bunch. These groups aren’t necessarily fraudulent (though some are), but they may spend an inordinate amount of their donations on administrative expenses, rather than directing this money to where it’s most needed. Fortunately, you don’t have to guess about the trustworthiness or the efficiency of a particular group, because you can check on it. To make sure that a charity is an actual charity – one that is tax-exempt and listed as a 501(c)(3) organization – you can go to www.irs.gov, the website of the Internal Revenue Service, and hit the “Charities & Nonprofits” link. An organization called Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator. org) tracks charitable groups’ financial health and accountability, including how much is spent on administrative and fundraising costs. Generally speaking, a charitable group that dedicates more than about 30% to 35% of its total costs to administration and fundraising expenses might be considered somewhat inefficient, though you’d want to evaluate each charity individually, since extenuating circumstances can occur. Keep in mind, though, that smaller charities may not have the same resources as a national organization to provide the reporting necessary for Charity Navigator. Will my employer match my contribution? You can make your charitable gift go a lot further if your employer matches it. Typically, companies match donations at a 1:1 ratio, but

some will match at 2:1 or even higher. Check with your human resources department about your company’s policy on charitable matches. Are my charitable gifts tax deductible? A few years ago, Congress significantly raised the standard deduction, which, for the 2021 tax year, is now $12,550 for single taxpayers, $25,100 for joint filers and $18,800 for heads of household. As a result of this increase, many people no longer itemize and thus have less financial incentive to make charitable contributions. If you still do itemize and you’re thinking of making charitable gifts, you generally have a choice between giving cash and another asset such as stocks. Each type of gift could earn you a tax deduction, but a gift of appreciated stocks could be more beneficial because you may also be avoiding the capital gains tax you might incur if you eventually sold the stocks. You should consult with your tax advisor and the charity (not all accept investments) before making the cash-versus-stock decision. Even if you don’t itemize, you could still get a tax benefit from making a charitable contribution. That’s because Congress has extended part of the COVID-19-related legislation that allows taxpayers to claim charitable deductions of $300 (for single filers) or $600 (for married couples) if they claim the standard deduction. The charitable donations must be made in cash, not stocks. Giving Tuesday comes just once a year, but your gifts can have lasting benefits. So, be as generous as you can afford – and enjoy the good feelings that follow. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors cannot provide tax or legal advice. New Study Shows 2019 Cook County Property Tax Assessments Met Standards for Accuracy and Equity Property tax assessments of homes and commercial properties in the northern suburbs of Cook County met standards for assessment accuracy, uniformity, and equity in 2019, according to a first-of-its-kind study by the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), released today by Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi. The sales ratio study compared residential and commercial assessments to sale prices, and found the initial assessments met all three standards for high-quality assessments. The study also examined the effects of appeals of those assessments to the Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO) and the Cook County Board of Review (BOR). “Sales ratio studies are the best way to know whether an assessment system is fair or not. The IAAO study says that our reforms lead to more accurate, uniform, and equitable assessments than in the past,” said Assessor Kaegi. “Fair assessments are the first step to ensure no one pays more than his or her fair share in property taxes. On that measure, we are delivering what we promised to Cook County taxpayers.” The 2019 assessments were reflected in tax bills received in 2020. Based on data from the Cook County Treasurer, many 2020 residential tax bills decreased. Increases in residential tax bills averaged one percent in 2020 while commercial property tax bills increased an average of 15% during the same period. The IAAO’s report is the first third-party study to review the accuracy of the 2019 reassess-

ment process through all phases of the Cook County assessment and appeal process. Previous third-party studies of 2018 assessments showed a lack of accuracy, uniformity, and equity in both residential and, particularly, commercial assessments. “By improving the modeling and data used in its 2019 assessments, the Cook County Assessor’s Office improved the accuracy, uniformity, and equity of its work,” said Larry Clark, IAAO’s Director of Strategic Initiatives. “The final certified values for this tax year remained within recommended ranges. This is a significant improvement on past performance.” Throughout all levels of appeals at the Assessor’s Office and the Board of Review, 2019 assessments remained within industry standards for accuracy and uniformity. Though initial CCAO assessments, prior to appeals, met the IAAO standard for equity, the results of appeals at the Assessor’s Office showed some bias toward lower-valued properties while appeals at the Board of Review showed bias toward highervalued properties. “My office has published reports, data, and methodologies describing the residential and commercial assessment process,” said Assessor Kaegi. “We will continue to publish this material and invite the IAAO to study our work for a transparent look at how we are meeting the standards of fairness in assessments.”

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office yesterday again provided free replacement and repair of car lights at what was its biggest such event to date. This public service took place at the Rich Township government garage off Governors Highway in Richton Park. Automotive technicians who normally service the County’s fleet of Sheriff’s Police and other vehicles in the agency changed lights for a record of more than 60 registered participants. Included were headlights, taillights and license plate illumination. In recent months, the Sheriff’s Office has held a pair of these events in Ford Heights and another in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood. Normally a simple replacement of a headlight could cost $110. Some of the repairs were fairly routine, but many others required removal of panels, bumpers or other parts of the cars, vans and light trucks

which were brought to the event by those needing assistance. The goal of the program, initiated by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, is to keep residents safe and avoiding traffic stops and tickets for missing or nonfunctioning lights. Sheriff Dart had asked his staff to analyze why Sheriff’s Police Officers were stopping motorists. “92, 93% of stops we were making were all based on headlights and taillights,” Sheriff Dart has said. “If we get headlights and taillights repaired, our citizens save money and won’t be stopped for these minor violations. My great staff and I are always looking for ways to expand our community service.” The Cook County Sheriff’s Office is committed to future such events, as the number of people served has tripled since the previous effort and grown five-fold since the first one.

Faith United Methodist Church is an important congregation that desires to deepen and extend its legacy of partnership and service in the Chicagoland community of Dolton. This legacy of a congregation as a community hub motivates the congregation’s leaders today in renewing its mission to the largely Black neighborhoods of Dolton and envisioning an increased role that supports the needs and dreams of the community. As a United Methodist church, our social principles teach that we must follow in the footsteps of our founder, John Wesley, who sought to improve the lives of those who suffered from debilitating conditions such as poverty, starvation, illiteracy, imprisonment, addictions, and disease. We have a responsibility to innovate, sponsor, and evaluate new forms of community that will encourage the development of the fullest potential in individuals in the place where we serve. That commitment to justice and to the community of Dolton cannot change. That’s why in 2021, Faith Church has invested in a year-long Community Visioning and Reinvestment Project to make the church a center of community life and a public resource shared by and accessible to people in Dolton. The goal has been to create a more sustainable plan for Faith Church to engage with and serve our community, beginning with addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has changed life as we know it. Since the emergence of COVID-19 in early 2020, the Chicago South Suburbs have experience higher rates of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths than Chicago proper, with an overwhelming majority being among black and low-income families. Now that vaccines are widely accessible, the South Suburbs have the lowest vaccination rates in Metro Chicago, with less than 40% of Dolton residents yet to be vaccinated. Understanding the intersection of poverty and race as it relates to the impact of COVID-19 in Dolton and the surrounding South Suburbs, Faith United Methodist Church is not only offering free COVID-19 vaccinations for adults and kids, but we are giving away $50 gift cards for each dose thanks to funding from the Chicagoland Vaccine Partnership. To date, Faith Church has hosted 2 vaccine events where 15 people have received both doses of the Moderna vaccine, 21 people have received 1 dose, and 33 people have received booster shots, totaling more than $5000 in gift card giveaways. And we’re still not done! Join us at Faith United Methodist Church Dolton on Saturday, November 27th from 11am to 3pm for our third community vaccine event where those eligible can receive their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (booster) shot, and children between the ages of 5 and 11 can receive their first shot and walk away with a $50 gift card (while supplies last)!

Bill Vliestra – Owner Operator

They Call Me “The Fixer” WOODROW WILCOX On November 17, 2021, the husband of one our clients brought me a bill from a local hospital. When the client took the medical bill to one our offices and showed it to their agent, the agent told them to bring the bill to me. The agent called me “the fixer”. “That’s right. Our agent called you ‘the fixer’,” the husband of the client repeated to me a few times. I copied the bill and started to work on it. In less than ten minutes, I knew what was wrong with the bill. It was another case of Medicare failing to do its job. Medicare never sent the claim information to the senior citizen’s Medicare supplement insurance company. An insurance company won’t pay a bill that Medicare never sends to it. I wrote a letter to the hospital’s patient billing department. That department has dealt with me on many past occasions. They always cooperate. I stated what the problem was and requested that they send the critical information about the claim and bill to our client’s insurance company so that the balance can be paid to the hospital. All the help that I gave to this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” for our clients when a Medicare related medical bill threatens their wallet. If your insurance agent or agency does not give clients this high level of customer service, why don’t you switch to our agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through bookstores or online.

THANKSGIVING WORDS TO LIVE BY THANKS TO THE MUNSTER CHURCH: I hope this lovely church does not mind being mentioned again this week. I am hoping that the church sign--DON’T JUST COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS--SHARE THEM-reasonates with many of us this Thanksgiving week. We have all been through a lot given the pandemic that has sickened the world and much of the United States. We are thankfully pulling out of the Covid 19 that took so many of our loved ones from us and is still a menace to be reckoned with. As many of us learned from childhood, it’s not what happens to us so much that matters, it’s how we deal with it. And deal with it we have--from our businesess and schools shuting down, we learned to work and study from home. We learned to be grateful for that home and not to take things for granted anymore. A lot has changed in our lives. Yet, much has stayed the same. We are still the same, just a little older and wiser, perhaps. My own gratitude extends to that of my family and friends; the 52 years I had on earth with my beloved son, Spencer, and the years I have left with my four granddaughters and great granddaughter. No matter our trials and tribulations, we are all Blessed in some way. And like the Munster Church sign says, lets do share our Blessings. Happy Thanksgiving! ***

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

Thanksgiving

uBreakiFix - Certified Techs

Thanksgiving Day is an annual national holiday in the United States and Canada celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. 5 3 1

The State of LGBTQ+ Equality in Nine Illinois Municipalities Detailed in Human Rights Campaign Index Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, in partnership with The Equality Federation, released its 10th annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI), the only nationwide assessment of LGBTQ+ equality regarding municipal policies, laws and services in 506 cities across the nation, including nine in Illinois. The average score for cities in Illinois is 77 out of 100 points, which falls above the national average of 67. This year, a recordbreaking 110 cities earned the highest score of 100, which is up from 11 in 2012, the MEI’s inaugural year, illustrating the striking advancements municipalities have made over the past 10 years. HRC Foundation released the following video celebrating the MEI’s 10 year achievements. “LGBTQ+ people are everywhere—in every city, county and ZIP code. Throughout its 10 year history, the Municipal Equality Index has been centered on supporting and celebrating the work municipalities do to serve LGBTQ+ people in the places they call home,” said JoDee Winterhof, Human Rights Campaign Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs. “This year, state-wide lawmakers have zeroed in on attacking transgender and non-binary children—for no reason other than in an effort to harm and erase them. Local leaders, however, have continued to move the needle of progress forward, and by doing so, they have spurred economic growth by signaling to residents, visitors and employers that their city is open to everyone.” “In reflecting on the Municipal Equality Index’s 10-year history, it feels as though these past few years have been the most challenging, and yet the most critical, to advancing LGBTQ+ equality. Despite the increasing attacks we are seeing on transgender youth in state legislatures, the important work to advance protections for LGBTQ+ people continues at the local level,” said Fran Hutchins, Executive

Director of Equality Federation Institute. “As we face the upcoming attacks by opponents of equality, we know the statebased movement is stronger than ever and ready to fight for the millions of LGBTQ+ Americans who need us in the towns and cities across this country.” The report also contains an issue brief for policymakers that covers how municipalities can support transgender and non-binary individuals, as well as the types of challenges they face, ways that a city can support them, and guidance on forming an anti-transgender and non-binary violence prevention task force. Additionally, the report includes HRC’s Pledge for Local Elected Leaders to End Violence Against Black and Brown Transgender Women. “For 10 incredible years, the MEI has helped guide, shape and inspire more inclusive laws and policies in cities of all sizes in all parts of the country,” said Cathryn Oakley, State Legislative Director & Senior Counsel for the Human Rights Campaign and Founding Author of the Municipal Equality Index. “This program is one of the key ways HRC is able to impact the daily lives of our members, supporters and allies. Being able to personally witness these communities continue to push themselves to better serve their LGBTQ+ communities over the years has been one of my greatest joys. I am incredibly proud of this project and of the MEI team who have made this report a vehicle of enduring change and of our partners in communities around the country who have enthusiastically embraced its possibilities.” Other significant findings from the 2021 MEI include: This year, 181 cities have transgenderinclusive healthcare benefits for municipal employees—up from 179 in 2020, despite more rigorous standards this year, and only five at the start of the MEI. The national city score average jumped to an all-time high of 67 points, up from 64 last year and 59 in 2012, marking both the fourth consecutive year of national average

increases as well as the highest year-overyear national average growth ever. As a marker of the change that ten editions of the MEI have brought, cities rated by the MEI in 2012 averaged 59 points then; in 2021, those cities averaged 85 points. 11 cities scored 100 points in the 2012 MEI; ten times that number did so in 2021, the tenth edition. Cities around the country saw progress, with every region of the country seeing a higher average score than last year. 43 municipalities have anti-conversion therapy ordinances in states with no statelevel protections, up from 38 last year. The tenth edition of the MEI tells a story of sustained, transformational growth in cities of every size in every region of the country. While state legislatures attacked LGBTQ+ people in a historically difficult legislative session, cities focused on solving actual problems. Even though local leaders continue to pave the way forward on equality, there remains an unacceptable patchwork of laws for LGBTQ+ people across the country. This reinforces the need for the federal Equality Act that would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. The MEI rated 506 cities including the 50 state capitals, the 200 largest cities in the U.S., the five largest cities or municipalities in each state, the cities home to the state’s two largest public universities, the 75 municipalities that have high proportions of same-sex couples and 98 cities selected by HRC and Equality Federation state group members and supporters. It assesses each city on 49 criteria covering citywide non-discrimination protections, policies for municipal employees, city services, law enforcement and the city’s leadership on LGBTQ+ equality.
