Young Dancers Prepare for Holidance 2022 The Dancers of Katie’s Spotlight Dance Academy are getting ready for their 1st Annual Holidance Showcase in December.

The dancers come from all over the region. All of the dancers have been working very hard in preparation for their Showcase.

Katie’s Spotlight Dance Academy is under the direction of Katie Solina. Registration for their next session of classes will

be available to see on their Facebook page mid-December. The next session begins in January and will conclude in Spring with a Spring Showcase. The Sand Ridge Audubon Society welcomes new member and folks interested in local birding and nature We are a group of individuals who are nature and bird enthusiasts. As an organization, we provide field trips and programs on environmental topics.

The Sand Ridge Audubon Society meets on the first Friday of each month at 7 pm with refreshments beforehand. After a short business meeting, we have local bird sighting news, nature and environmental topics, and exciting and informative presentations given by experts and knowledgable people on a variety of interesting nature issues.

Throughout the year, we conduct birding hikes to nearby locations, and a variety of special field trips to observe our feathered friends. Some of the places we regularly visit are the Indiana Dunes, Lake Michigan, area forest preserves, Starved Rock for eagle observation, and the yearly fascinating migration of Sand Hill Cranes at the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area.

Oct. 2022 - Sept. 2023. Our annual dues help pay for postage and paper and also for speakers at our monthly meeting.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My wife and I are purchasing a condo. We were scheduled to close a day after the sellers, but were unable to because the lender did not complete the loan docs.

However, the sellers turned the gas and electricity off the day we were scheduled to close. The utilities were off for several days.

The broker told us the sellers did not have to leave the utilities on after we did our final “walk-through?” Do you agree?

Answer: When you buy a property it must be delivered to you at closing in substantially the same condition as it was on the day the offer was accepted, perhaps 30 to 60 days earlier.

It’s common for closing dates to change.

For sellers, the best approach is to keep utilities on until title actually changes hands because the cost of utilities for a few additional days is minimal and the potential for damage in some climates can be large.

If there’s damage to the property as a result of discontinued utilities then you should ask an attorney to review the matter. Also, be sure to test all appliances and systems at the pre-settlement walk-through. If the utilities are not on you have no way to know if appliances and systems work or if something is leaking. In this situation it may be prudent to require the establishment of an escrow fund at closing, money that will not be released to the seller until all systems and appliances can be tested and shown to be in working order.

Police Records Clerk

The South Holland Police Department (SHPD) relies on over 20 different software databases to input and extract information to facilitate its daily operations. Various systems are used to access and maintain files of accident reports, incident reports, arrest records, payment processing, State/Federal records, citation information, towed vehicle information, etc. The Records Clerk operates and generates reports from these databases/systems.

The records clerk often serves as the initial face of the SHPD that is operational 365/24-7 days a year interacting with a diverse population, with varying personalities.

Additional responsibilities of the Records Clerk include, but are not limited to:

Requirements/Skills:

• Minimum of 18 years of age, high school diploma or GED equivalent.

• Tact, diplomacy, and strong interpersonal skills.

• Ability to maintain confidential information.

• Strong written (including spelling, grammar and punctuation skills), oral communication and computer skills are essential for success in this position.

• Keen attention to detail and accuracy.

• Must be highly organized and adept at multi-tasking.

• Ability to set priorities, as well as adhere to strict guidelines.

• Ability to input and disseminate information in a timely manner.

JOSH BOOTSMA Every Thanksgiving for the last decade, my mom has dutifully maintained a family tradition in which she hands out a geometric leaf printed on a sheet of paper. Each family member’s task is to — before Thanksgiving dinner — color the leaf however they see fit (crayons, colored pencils, markers, etc.) and write five things they’re thankful for on the back of the leaf.

Though the family jokingly “groans” at having to do this every year, the exercise of stopping and using a half hour to color in the leaf is actually quite reflective, and it’s a good time to think about what five things I’m going to express Thanksgiving for that year.

My favorite part about my family’s tradition, however, is going through the leaves of past years. Walking back through our family’s history of thanks-givings is a special time as we remember the Lord’s faithfulness.

As the stack of colored drawings gets larger each year, so does my cumulative thankfulness. Year-to-year, God has been so good to me and my family. Our lives have been marked by death, sin, and hardship, yes — but even more so by the love, kindness, patience, and blessing of the Lord!

I encourage you to take time to reflect this week on what you’re thankful for. Think about what you were worried about last year at this time — did God pull you through?

What about when you were in school, or when you got married, or when you had your first child — how has God shaped you since then?

Thanksgiving is by its nature a reflective, thoughtful holiday. I encourage you to think of how God has shown up in your life throughout the years. If you need a place to start, try reading Psalm 111.

Early on Thanksgiving was observed by the early settlers and the Indians as a welcome for the harvest and a way to appreciate their mutual collective efforts toward living in the new world.

Fast forward to 2022 and our country celebrates this warm and wonderful holiday built around food, family and gratitude for our bounty, small or large. As for me I am eternally grateful to the Dear Lord for having been born in the greatest country in the world. Blessed with family and friends and the freedom to worship as I see fit.

MIKE BUDER On October 3, 1789 President George Washington made a proclamation of a National Day of Thanksgiving. I won’t quote his declaration in its entirety but this is what I felt was important to share as well as a little about the context for this declaration.

“Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor; and whereas both houses of congress have by their joint committee requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. Now therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the twenty-sixth day of November next, to be devoted by the People of these United States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficial author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish

constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One and now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed…..”

When President Washington stated “particularly the national One now lately instituted” he was referring to the first amendment to the constitution. Some people believe that the first amendment means that religious expression in public place should not be allowed. The men who gave us the first amendment obviously did not intend to impose such restrictions. It was these same men, the day after they (congress) adopted the first amendment, who asked President George Washington to declare a National Day of Thanksgiving to God. Think about Washington’s words. What do they mean to you? May God bless you and your family…

Shadow was an avid baseball player who played for Bowen High School, Cincinnati Reds Minor League, the Army, and many Chicago affiliated teams.

He coached numerous baseball teams including the Calumet City Little League. Shadow boxed in a few Chicago gyms and for the Army during his service in the Korean War. He will be dearly missed. Amelia DiRienzo (née Tamburini) of La Porte, IN and formally of South Chicago Heights, IL, peacefully passed away on November 13, 2022.

She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Amelia was born on April 24, 1922 in Chicago Heights to Louis and Rosa Tamburini (née Baldassarri). On September 27, 1947 she married Gene “Goody” DiRienzo.

Amelia was a hardworking woman working at Diamond Wire, Illinois

Shade Cloth Company, Flintkote Company, Weber Castillo, and retired from Stead Textile. Amelia was a member of St. Liborius Church and Former St. Rocco. She was also a President, Vice President, and Member of the Nifty Over Fifty Club, and President of the local Mother Cabrini Society.

She enjoyed cooking, watching her beloved Days of Our Lives Soap Opera, reading books on famous people, and People Magazine. Mostly her enjoyment was found spending time with friends and family. Amelia was a kind, caring, and giving person who always put the needs of her family before her own. She was a strong woman who faced every challenge in her life with courage and dignity. Amelia was a source of inspiration to us all and she will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched.

Amelia was preceded in death by her parents (Silvio and Rosa Baldassarri), husband Goody, son-inlaw (Lawrence Cameron), five sisters (Ida, Filomena, Theresa, Licia, and Louise), and grand daughter Mary Angela Cameron. She is survived by her children, Cheryl Cameron and Mary (Jim) Wellnitz, her granddaughter Katie (Gregg) Kmiecik, and step-grandson Brian Wellnitz. She was the proud Granny to her greatgranddaughter Charlotte Kmiecik. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and greatnephews. Finally, thank you to mom’s dedicated caregiver, Beth Masters.

She became a close friend to mom and provided a safe environment for mom to share her feelings and thoughts. For this we are ever grateful. Thank you to Caleb the comfort dog from LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry for providing comfort to mom in her last days. And our nurse friends Alicia, Christina, and Rebecca for helping mom to her journey home.

Daniel D. Fieldhouse, age 52, of St. John IN, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, November 18, 2022 after a difficult and courageous battle with melanoma.

Dan was born October 23, 1970 in Hammond, IN. He was a graduate of Highland High School and attended Purdue University in West Lafayette. He was interested in technology from a very young age. This led to a successful career in Information Technology.

He could do it all: from network installation to programming to software implementation. He was most recently employed at Workday as a software product manager. He was known at work and at home as someone who could solve any technical problem. He spent much of his spare time working on projects around the house: big and small; finished and unfinished. There wasn’t a repair or home improvement project he couldn’t handle. His talent in this area was amazing.

Dan put so much loving work into his family’s home. His masterpiece is the beautiful backyard pond. Dan was dedicated to his family and they meant the world to him.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lisa; sons Chase (Myranda), Riley, Greyson and Kaden Fieldhouse; daughter Peyton Fieldhouse; granddaughter

Speaking Of Seniors

A Big Bad Medicare Policy WOODROW WILCOX

On November 11, 2022, I met with a client from Griffith, Indiana. We phoned Medicare together to try to resolve a medical bill problem.

We spoke to four Medicare representatives including a senior Medicare claims representative. After the phone call, I helped the client to file a complaint against Medicare for a really bad policy that could cost many seniors substantial amounts of money. Here is the problem.

When a claim is filed with Medicare, Medicare is supposed to rule on that claim and send a Medicare Explanation of Benefits to the doctor or hospital and to the Medicare supplement insurance company. The same information is supposed to be sent to the senior citizen patient in a Medicare Summary Notice.

If Medicare makes a ruling on a claim and then changes that ruling, it will not send an Adjusted Medicare Explanation of Benefits to the insurance company. It will send an Adjusted Medicare Summary Notice to the senior citizen after 30 to 90 days.

Medicare representatives told me that Medicare does not send a revised ruling to the Medicare supplement insurance company of the senior because THE LAW DOES NOT REQUIRE MEDICARE TO DO THAT. Instead, Medicare imagines that the senior

citizen will somehow know to send a copy of the revised claim report to the senior’s insurance company. How many seniors do you know that know and understand that?

Not many if any!

This means that Medicare supplement insurance companies don’t get the information so that they can work on fixing the problems caused by Medicare’s revised rulings. That would be easier for seniors.

Instead, the insurance companies never get notified and the senior citizens get hounded to pay medical bills that their insurance companies would pay if only Medicare had notified the insurance companies about the revised rulings. So, seniors get hounded to pay bills that they really don’t owe as a direct and proximate result of this BIG BAD MEDICARE POLICY. I hope you’ll join me in urging Congress to fix this problem that probably costs innocent seniors millions of dollars per year.

Is a Donor-advised Fund Right for You? SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN You can find many ways to support charitable organizations. One method that’s gained popularity over the past few years is called a donor-advised fund. Should you consider it?

The answer depends on your individual situation, because donor-advised funds are not appropriate for everyone. However, if you’re in a position to make larger charitable gifts, you might at least want to see what this strategy has to offer.

Here’s how it works: • Contribute to the fund. You can contribute to your donor-advised fund with cash or marketable securities, which are assets that can be converted to cash quickly.

If your contribution is tax deductible, you’ll get the deduction in the year you make the contribution to the fund. Of course, these contributions are still subject to IRS limits on charitable tax deductions and whether you itemize your deductions. If you typically don’t give enough each year to itemize and plan on making consistent charitable contributions, you could consider combining multiple years’ worth of planned giving into a single donor-advised fund contribution, and claim a larger deduction in that year.

This move may be especially impactful if you have years with a higher amount of income, with an accompanying higher tax rate. If you contribute marketable securities, like stocks and bonds, into the fund, a subsequent sale of the securities avoids capital gains taxes, maximizing the impact of your contribution.

• Choose an investment. Typically, donoradvised funds offer several professionally managed diversified portfolios where you can place your contributions. You’ll want to consider the level of investment risk to which your fund may be exposed. And assuming all requirements are met, any investment growth

is not taxable to you, the donor-advised fund or the charity that ultimately receives the grant, making your charitable gift go even further.

• Choose the charities. You can choose grants for the IRS-approved charities that you want to support. You decide when you want the money donated and how it should be granted. You’re generally free to choose as many IRS-approved charitable organizations as you like. And the tax reporting is relatively easy — you don’t have to keep track of receipts from every charity you support.

Instead, you can just keep the receipts from your contributions to the fund.

Although donor-advised funds clearly offer some benefits, there are important trade-offs to consider. For one thing, your contributions are irrevocable, which means once you put the money in the fund, you cannot access it for any reason other than charitable giving.

And the investments you choose within your fund will carry some risk, as is true of all investments. Also, donor-advised funds do have investment management fees and other costs. So, consider the impacts of these fees when deciding how you want to give.

In any case, you should consult with your tax and financial professionals before opening a donor-advised fund. And if the fund becomes part of your estate plans, you’ll also want to work with your legal advisor. But give this philanthropic tool some thought — it can help you do some good while also potentially benefiting your own long-term financial strategy.
