The South Suburban College (SSC) Adult Education Department has opened registration for its free High School Equivalency (HSE/GED) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Both programs will run from Tuesday, January 17, through Thursday, April 6, during the Spring 2023 Semester. Most Adult Education programs are offered full and part-time at the main campus in South Holland or the Oak Forest Center. Students have different attendance options, including daytime, nighttime, and online course options.

Many adults choose to further their skills and pursue high school education through the High School Equivalency (HSE/ GED) program. The HSE program will develop the skills required to pass the High School Equivalency exams. HSE for ESL is also available for advanced ESL students who plan to take the HSE/ GED exam in English. English as a Second Language (ESL) allows non-native students to improve their English skills from beginning to advanced levels.

HSE registration is made by appointment only at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2475 or 2411, or online at https://forms.gle/ nBaUMMKjnMiz8RMU6 as follows:

November 1, 3, 9, 10, 15, 17, 28, and 30 at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

at the Main Campus, Room L233.

ESL registration is made by appointment only at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2475 or 2411, or online at https://forms.gle/ CtBYZBkaCWNSyaDC7 as follows:

• November 1, 3, 9, 10, 15, 17, 28, and 30 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Main Campus, Room 1243.

All HSE and ESL incoming students will take a placement test at the time of registration and should expect to stay at least three hours. No children are allowed at registration. Incoming students of both the HSE and ESL programs are expected to arrive on time.

The following items are required at registration:

* Current Illinois-Issued Photo ID

All courses are offered free of charge. For compliance with Section 511 of Public Law 101-166 (the Stevens Amendment), Federal funds of $343,670 provide approximately 36% of the support of these programs. Indiana residents are not eligible to participate in Adult Education programs.

As Election Day approaches, Cook County Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough is encouraging voters who have concerns or questions about election security to visit the Clerk’s “Trusted Source” webpage for detailed facts on all aspects of election operations, from questions about voting by mail to the final tabulation of election results.

The Clerk’s Office launched the special webpage to combat misinformation and to rebut false claims circulating on social media and in some online reports about election operations and the security of the election process.

The webpage contains detailed FAQs to address voter concerns about allegations of election fraud as well as questions about voter identification, the processing of ballots, and Mail Ballot Drop Boxes. There are separate, detailed sections that focus on questions about voting by mail and methods used to ensure election transparency and integrity. The page also provides a list of other trusted election sources at the national, state, and local levels.

“As the election authority for suburban Cook County, nothing is as important as ensuring that voters have complete confidence

in the security of our elections, knowing their votes are accurately counted, and that the integrity of the process is staunchly defended and protected,” said Yarbrough. The webpage is accessible through the Clerk’s general website at cookcountyclerk.com/ TrustedSource and is being promoted to voters on the Clerk’s social media platforms.

The webpage also details the extensive measures that the Clerk’s Office takes to protect the electoral process and to offer safe and accessible voting methods. Some of these measures include a voter registration process that ensures only those meeting state eligibility requirements can vote and tracks those who have cast a ballot; extensive cybersecurity protections; extended Early Voting; a secure Vote by Mail process; and secure Ballot Drop Boxes at countywide polling locations.

The Clerk’s Office reminds voters that Early Voting is currently available at more than 50 suburban locations where voters can cast their ballot, register to vote, or drop off their Mail Ballot, including on the weekend. Early Voting will conclude November 7.

Patrick Zamkin, a local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the Chicagoland Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year’s toy drive.

Local residents may help needy children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, located at 18735 Dixie Hwy in Homewood , during regular business hours beginning November 1 through December 7, 2022. Monetary gifts cannot be accepted.

“With the holiday season around the corner, we are all getting ready for the festivities,” Zamkin said. “And as this is the season of giving, now is a great time to remember the less fortunate in our community.”

Avoid becoming ‘burden’ on grown children

Here’s an interesting statistic: Some 72% of retirees say one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to a 2021 survey by Age Wave and Edward Jones. Both before and during retirement, what steps can you take to avoid burdening your loved ones in the future?

Here are a few suggestions:

• Build your retirement savings. The greater your financial resources, the less likely it becomes that you’d ever have to count on your grown children for financial support. You may have access to a 401(k) or similar retirement plan at work, so take advantage of it. Even with an employersponsored plan, you also may be eligible to contribute to an IRA. In addition to offering a variety of investment options, a 401(k) and IRA provide potential tax advantages. And once you do retire, be careful about how much you withdraw each year from your retirement plans and other investments.

• Plan for health care costs. Once you are retired, health care costs will be a significant expense. You may have Medicare, but you’ll also want to consider your need for supplemental health insurance to cover traditional medical costs. And you’ll want to consider another potential health-related expense: long-term care. You may never need the services of a home health aide or a stay in a nursing home, but no one can predict the future. Medicare does not cover most costs for long-term care, which can be quite high. In 2021, the annual national median cost for a private room in a nursing home was over $108,000, while the median cost for a fulltime home health aide was nearly $62,000, according to a survey by Genworth, an insurance company. You may want to consult

with a financial professional on strategies for protecting yourself from these costs.

• Create necessary legal documents. If something were to happen to you, and you didn’t have the appropriate legal documents in place, your loved ones could be placed in a bind, both financially and emotionally. That’s why it’s a good idea to create documents such as a durable financial power of attorney, which lets you name someone to manage your finances if you became incapacitated, and a durable power of attorney for health care, which allows someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you can’t make them yourself. You’ll want to work with a legal professional to develop the documents appropriate for your needs.

• Evaluate your housing needs. As you enter retirement, you may want to evaluate your living situation. Could you downsize to a smaller home, or perhaps a condominium or apartment? Not only might you save money with such a move, but you could also end up relieving your grown children of the responsibilities and hassles involved in clearing out and selling your home should you become unable to do so yourself during the later years of your retirement.

By taking these measures, along with others, you can go a long way toward maintaining your independence and putting yourself in a place where you won’t burden your grown children. And that’s a good place to be.

Speaking Of Seniors Found the Problem on the Bill

On October 12, 2022, I worked on a medical bill problem for a client from Crown Point, Indiana. The client is 80 years old.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the ambulance company that billed her.

Dear Billing Supervisor, Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The Run Number is 22-XXXXXX. I was told that the balance is $244.20.

I helped our client to request a Medicare Summary Notice regarding this claim. When she gets that, she will forward it to me. However, your bill to her shows a problem with the bill that Medicare told your firm the bill has.

According to the two notes from Medicare, your firm failed to give at least one Remark Code and your firm failed to give information such as remittance advice or codes to allow Medicare to process the claim.

This information is on your bill to our

client. So, your bill admits your firm’s failure to send the claim correctly. Please, correct your mistakes and wait for a response from Medicare so that your firm does not waste our time or your time.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps clients with such Medicare related medical bill problems without charge to demonstrate to our clients that we really do care for them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high standard of customer service, why don’t you switch and use our insurance agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

Question: I’m trying to buy a home for the first time, did the usual contract, had the inspection done and found out the roof had four layers of shingles. The inspection report came out and stated the roof was not leaking, but structurally it was dangerous.

The sellers came back and said they will fix the roof, but increase the price of the house. That was a verbal, and we stated no because we did not expect to pay more for the house. To make a long story short, the sellers are two attorneys and they are now threatening us with legal action because they said nothing is wrong with the roof and they agreed to fix it anyway.

Answer: You need to get your own attorney and have him or her look at the purchase agreement and all disclosure statements. Most likely the building code requires that no more than two layers of roofing material can be used. The reason for this is to limit weight on the roof. Too much weight could cause structural problems.

As to the seller’s offer, it’s a counter offer to fix the roof at your cost in the form of a

higher price to which you have not agreed. What, exactly, is attractive about that?

Question: How can I be sure that now is the time to sell and buy?

Answer: You can’t. There’s no way to time the market, to buy at the low point and to sell at the high. What you can do is buy or sell in response to your needs and preferences.

If you think about the most-successful real estate “investors” it often turns out that they’re simply people who needed shelter, lived in their home for many years, paid down their mortgage and then had significant equity when they sold. It’s an old formula -- and one which has largely worked for most owners, most of the time and in most markets.

Do you have faith?

Heart Smart

The Bible tells us it is faith alone in Jesus Christ that saves, but what does that mean and how do we know if we have it?

I’ve heard it said that faith has three steps: cognition, conviction, and confidence.

Think for a moment of an alien that comes to earth and has never seen a stool before.

To explain a stool to him, you’d start by describing the materials it’s made out of and how its construction allows it to support a large amount of weight without collapsing. Slowly, the alien begins to understand what the stool is. That’s cognition.

Then, you sit on the stool and it doesn’t collapse. You stand and jump on it and it remains solid. You explain that you’ve sat on this stool for years, and it’s always supported your weight. The alien believes you, and believes in the stool’s ability to hold weight. He now has conviction.

The last step is confidence. The alien won’t be fully confident in the stool until he has sat on it himself. He does so and it holds him. He now has confidence.

With cognition, conviction, and confidence, the alien now has a well-rounded faith in the stool.

Where are you at in your faith? Are you cognizant of what Jesus Christ has accomplished? Do you know that He bled and died so that you and I can be saved from the punishment our sins deserve? That’s step one.

10:00 a.m.

Do you believe that Jesus died for you? Are you convicted of your sin and truly believe that He can save you? That’s step two.

Have you lived your life in reliance upon God and His promises for you? Have you plunged into the depths of Jesus Christ’s love for you? Do you trust that God truly knows you and has a plan for your life? That’s the final step.

A 3-C faith is beautiful, and more than your faith in a stool, your faith in Jesus is a relationship — a beautiful, loving relationship. The Lord will help you develop your faith if you only ask.

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated November 2. On this day, it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. Many people celebrate this day by visiting the graves of deceased loved ones and setting up altars with their favorite foods, drink, and photos. DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

What

what does it mean? Sooner or later prospective buyers and sellers come across the abbreviation DOM and ask what is hiding behind this real estate jargon. The short answer is: DOM stands for days on the market and indicates the number of days a property has been on the market for sale. The DOM of a listing will start accumulating from the day it is entered in the multiple listing service (MLS) and it will continue to add up until the property goes under contract. Unlike the crazy multiple offer, bidding wars we observed from 2020 through the first quarter of 2022 there are now more properties on the market that just sit and sit and sit…and consequently accumulate larger numbers of DOM. Then there are those properties that as soon as they are listed, get showings and offers…and the DOM are short. How useful is days on the market data? The DOM is a very useful tool to demonstrate to sellers the disadvantage of overpricing. By simply looking at the listing history of a property, it will often provide a case that the home could have sold sooner if it had been priced right. Also, what about all those price reductions before it finally got an offer? Could it even have sold for a higher price if the initial list price had been in line with the market right

from the beginning? Many buyers today want to know the total DOM of a home before they make an offer. Why? Because they are trying to gauge the motivations of a seller and “how desperate” a seller might be by the number of days on market. Recently I listed a home that went under contract after only six days. Although delighted, this caught my seller a little bit by surprise especially since another home on her block had been on the market for a much longer time without receiving an offer. I explained to her that her home sale was different. All the conditions including pricing, condition of the home, timing of the market and the marketing itself, were right. Then I pointed out the fact that the shorter time on the market also meant relief from the expenses for upkeep, maintenance and property taxes. My seller was very happy as she was looking forward to her quick closing with renewed confidence.
