Hard Rock Casino Northern IN Hosts Adopt-A-Thon with Humane Society of NWI and Gary Animal Control Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is hosting an animal Adopt-A-Thon in partnership with the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana and Gary Animal Control on Saturday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the southeast corner of the Hard Rock parking lot. People can meet with the animals and fill out adoption applications. If the applications are approved, they can even take their forever friends home the same day. According to Jamie Harris, Vice President of Hard Rock Northern Indiana’s Security and Parking, “We’ve stationed the event
in the southeast corner of our parking lot, at the corner of 29th and Burr Streets, to allow easy access and exit to the event. It should be a fun added attraction for our Saturday visitors.” Entertainment will be provided by media personality and DJ Tom Lounges. There will also be a performance by the popular Region acoustic artists James Gedda (Americana) and Jack Whittle (Blues). The Humane Society of NWI will be selling candles, air fresheners, t-shirts and other items. Proceeds support the care of the animals. The public is encouraged to bring

Tom Lounges, has been a supporter of animal rescue efforts for most of his life and has worked with Humane Society of Northwest Indiana in Gary for many years, said “I’ve enjoyed my role at Adopt-A-Thon events in the past as it’s always an opportunity to interact with people who love animals and care about their welfare. I often mix my passion for music and animals together at these kinds of events. Hopefully, we can find some forever homes for the cats and dogs who will be available for adoption at the event.” Adoption fees range from $95-$350. Fees vary based on breed. Price includes microchip, spay or neuter costs and all necessary vaccinations. Your Relationship to Money NANCY ZEKVELD Ecclesiastes 5:19 “And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life - this is indeed a gift from God.” NLT I am quite certain that you have heard advice when it comes to your weight or dieting issues. Often it is something along the lines of “recognize when you are eating for emotional reasons,” or “you need to understand your relationship with food.” These questions are aimed at helping you address the “WHY” of your challenges when it comes to losing weight. This advice also applies to your finances. The difference between those who have financial problems and those who do not directly correlates to the relationship each has with money. There is some merit to looking into this relationship angle closely because even those who make more run into problems with their finances. It is not simply a matter of making more money. How is it that a single person can make the same salary as a single income family of 5 yet still never have enough money? Your relationship to money should include a sound understanding of why you are making purchases. Do you spend to meet an emotional or social need? Do you understand what a purchase means in terms of personal worth, and how the result of purchases changes the landscape of your finances? It sounds like a lot but can be summarized in two words: Ask Questions. It is helpful to ask questions about yourself
and the reasons you make purchases and also ask questions of those who are selling products and services to you. In this way, you uncover the best use of your money and the habit will help you as your income levels increase so that you do not become the person who makes more money but still has the same financial problems. Asking questions is imperative to the ability to THRIVE under changing financial situations. You should understand how your relationship to money will affect you so you can weather the changes that impact your income now, or when your income goes up or down, or even when you no longer participate in the workforce. You may already be taking some or all the right steps, but here are some ideas to be sure you’re considering and revisiting as your business grows: Refresh your network. Are you involved in networking with other women business owners? Many of them may have insights into the issues women face in the business world, as well as suggestions about lending programs and business-friendly banks. You may also enjoy passing along your lessons learned to others. Review your business structure. If you go into business as a sole proprietor, you’ll have to report your business income on your personal income tax return. If you incorporate or form a limited liability company (LLC), you can protect your personal assets – such as your house and your investments – from creditors because these assets will be separated from your business assets and debts. You might also consider other, more complex entities, known as C and S corporations. There’s no single “correct” business structure and the most appropriate one for you may change over time, so, in choosing one that’s right for your needs, you’ll want to consult with your tax and legal advisors. Invest for growth. Ideally, hard work produces results, and one of the main results you want from your investments is growth – that is, you want your investments to appreciate in value so they can eventually help you meet your goals. But if you are overconcentrated in vehicles such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and government securities, you may end up lowering your growth potential. That’s not to say that CDs and Treasury bills are in some sense “lazy.” They can provide you with income and help you reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. But to achieve most of your goals, you’ll need a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments working for you, with the exact percentage based on your needs and life stages. Do an insurance checkup. To protect yourself and your business, you may want to review your insurance to make sure you

have the right kinds and amount of coverage. General liability insurance can be appropriate for sole proprietors, if you’ve established an LLC or you’ve incorporated your business. If you provide some type of professional service (i.e., legal, accounting, engineering and so on), you might need professional liability insurance. And no matter what business you own, you might want to add disability insurance to replace some of the income you’d lose if you were injured or became ill. Consider all your retirement options. If you’ve got your own business, you’re solely responsible for funding your retirement. In deciding which plan is right for you, you’ll need to consider several factors, including the number of employees, if any, and the nature of your business. And even though you’ve got plenty to do already, you should make the time to establish or review your own retirement plan – because eventually you’ll need all the resources you can accumulate to enjoy life as a former business owner. RICHARD ZEKVELD In today’s English hope is something less than certainty. When you say, “I hope” you’re expressing a longing for something future. You hope for it because you believe it might happen, or that it probably will happen. But you’re not sure it will happen. “I hope my parents take us to Six Flags this weekend. I hope I get this job. I hope she beats her cancer.” Sometimes our hopes become reality. Sometimes they don’t, dropping us into disappointment, disillusionment or even despair. But hope in the Bible is more robust. It is eager anticipation for something you know is going to happen. You are on the edge of your seat saying, “I can’t wait!” Hope grows in the soil of God’s promises. God’s promises produce certainty. In Psalm 42:5, the psalmist tells himself, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” In a dark time, the author of Lamentations asserts, “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (3:19-23). We often end up disappointed. Expectations often go unmet. But God sent his Son into the world to secure eternal life and a bright, eternal future for all who believe. Christ secured that future with his precious blood. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I am getting into the real estate investing business. I am in the process of buying/selling real estate for little or no money down. Since contracts are already prewritten and are fill in the blanks, I see no need to go with a real estate broker. Do you have information on writing a “win/win” contract for real estate investing? Answer: Real estate transactions are held together by written agreements accepted by both buyers and sellers. The act of acceptance suggests that each side is getting something from the deal, so all agreements can be seen as “win/win” arrangements. When I hear that someone wants a “win/ win” agreement for real estate investing and no money down I instantly wonder why the agreements used generally by local real estate brokers are somehow insufficient for this purpose -- and why some investment gurus suggest avoiding real estate brokers altogether. Perhaps it’s the definition of “win/win” that’s confusing -- some people see “win/win” as a code expression which really means one of the parties is accepting terms which are hugely unfavorable.
As to “no money down” transactions, the VA loan program has offered such financing for five decades. No “win/win” contracts are needed by qualified buyers to obtain such financing. These days, non-VA, zero-downpayment mortgages are pretty much impossible for borrowers to get. Given that real estate agreements routinely have localized requirements, the best approach is to speak with a local broker or attorney to obtain specific forms. Since you wrote for advice, let me give you a little bit more. If you want a real “win/win” real estate investment business, then be sure to use a real estate broker and attorney for all your real estate transactions. ‘The Great Resignation’: Why Millions of Americans Have Quit Their Jobs In what many are calling “The Great Resignation,” millions of U.S. workers across multiple industries have quit their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent survey found that 15% of the U.S. workforce are still planning to quit their jobs before 2022. Stress and burnout are major factors, which have hit the nursing and teaching professions particularly hard. On the flip side, for employees eager to find new jobs, the pandemic has also offered an opportunity to reevaluate their work and life priorities. Forty-one percent of workers say that finding a job they’re more passionate about is a major factor in their decision to look elsewhere for work. Reporting on the issue has also revealed that many Americans are fed up with stressful working conditions, long hours and low pay. Simply put, Americans are burnt out, and ready for a change. Teachers and healthcare workers, particularly nurses, are especially overwhelmed by the demands of working during the pandemic, and are experiencing burnout at an unprecedented rate. For years, teaching and nursing have ranked as the most stressful occupations, according to Gallup polling. The pandemic only seems to have made things worse. More than 3 in 4 teachers reported experiencing frequent work-related stress in the last year, compared to just 40% of adults in other professions. Meanwhile, over half of healthcare workers today report feeling burnout. The full implications of this year’s Great Resignation are far from clear. But while many might be pessimistic, some industry leaders are
viewing the Great Resignation as an opportunity - both for American workers and for the businesses who employ them. Dhaval Patel, Senior Vice President at Interfirst (https://joininterfirst. com/), a Chicago-based mortgage company, has designed a part of his hiring strategy around reaching burnt out teachers and nurses in need of a change. “A lot of healthcare workers and teachers are facing a difficult situation: stay in a system that’s poorly funded, understaffed and emotionally grueling, or switch careers after investing years in their education,” says Patel. “But many are switching nonetheless.” The main reason they’re switching careers? Other jobs provide a less stressful and more professional environment, and can even better value the skills teachers and nurses have acquired in their careers. “Nurses and teachers are highly educated; they have tons of soft, transferable skills that can be used anywhere,” says Patel. “There’s no reason for people with these skills to feel underpaid and undervalued, and other employers recognize the value they’re getting.” In this ever-changing COVID environment, many find that the rewards of reskilling or even just transferring existing skills can be enormous. A lot of jobs, particularly teaching and nursing jobs, pay relatively low wages. That can contribute to stress, and negatively impact job satisfaction. With more and more American workers quitting their jobs and switching industries, now is an opportune time for many to make a change. “Burnout isn’t inevitable,” says Patel. “In the COVID environment, no one should feel stuck almost anything is possible.”

On October 4, 2021, I reviewed a medical bill that one of our clients sent to me to check. The client is from Hammond, Indiana. I read the bill and phoned the client’s insurance company for more information. Then, I wrote a letter to the medical firm to protect our client from paying a bad bill. With some editing to protect our client’s privacy, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm in northwest Indiana. Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $220 on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered on 08/24/21 at a facility in Hammond, Indiana. I examined the bill and phoned our client’s Medicare supplement plan insurance company to learn what it knew of this claim. It reported that it received no such claim from Medicare. The bill itself gives evidence that your firm failed to file the claim with Medicare. There is no credit, discount, or other adjustment shown from a Medicare

EOB report. If you are contracted with Medicare, then you are obligated to bill Medicare and not the patient directly. Either your firm or the billing service that you use FAILED TO FOLLOW MEDICARE RULES. Please, correct your error and file the claim as required by Medicare rules. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to protect our clients from mistakes or fraud in the Medicare medical billing system.
