South Suburban College (SSC) is unveiling a series of engaging events celebrating National Civility Month throughout August.

The college invites the public and students to participate in activities that foster respectful interactions and cultivate a civil environment. This initiative aligns with National Civility Month, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and unity in promoting a culture of civility.

August kicked off with a Civility Awareness Campaign across the college’s social media platforms on the first of the month.

“In today’s society, mutual respect has become a rare commodity.

As neighbors and citizens, we are responsible for nurturing our community by extending a helping hand, living by the golden rule, and choosing unity over isolated struggles”, stated SSC Student Trustee Jamesina Collier.

SSC Trustee Anthony Williams from Dolton, Illinois, with over two decades of experience in social services and education, will also be a panelist. The discussion addresses violence as a public health crisis and explores ways to create a more civil society. Trustee Williams remarked, “Civility is vital for a healthy civilization and is needed for our youth. I am glad SSC is championing this noble cause.” More panelists will be announced closer to the event.

South Suburban College is additionally excited to host an Author Spotlight and Roundtable Discussion with Dr. Danielle J. Buhuro on August 30th from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, at the SSC library. Dr. Buhuro will conduct a book reading and signing of her work, “Is There a Heaven for a G? A Pastoral Care Approach to Gang Violence,” at the SSC Library on the first floor of the Main Campus.

What does it cost not to have life insurance?

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN It’s probably not on your calendar, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And that means it’s a good time to become more aware of the benefits of having life insurance — and the dangers of not having it.

Unfortunately, confusion about some of the basic elements of owning life insurance may be keeping people from getting the protection they need. More than half of uninsured Americans say they have put off purchasing coverage because they don’t know what to buy or how much they need, according to Life Happens and LIMRA, two nonprofit organizations that provide research and education about life insurance.

Yet, while this confusion may be understandable, a delay in acquiring appropriate insurance can be costly in more ways than one. From a strict dollarsand-cents perspective, it’s generally much more affordable to buy life insurance when you’re younger. But there are potentially much greater costs involved in not having insurance when it’s needed — and these costs are personal.

To be specific, what is it worth … … to know your family could stay in your home if something happened to you? … to know your children could continue their education plans? … to know your debts could be paid without burdening your family?

Clearly, if you were to assign these benefits a “price tag,” it would be pretty high.

And that’s the value of owning sufficient life insurance.

So, let’s return to the issue of people putting off buying insurance because they don’t know how much they need, or what type they should have: How much is enough? You might hear that you need life insurance equal to about seven to 10 times your pretax annual salary.

That’s not a bad “ballpark” figure, but not everyone is playing in the same ballpark.

To get a true sense of how much of a death benefit you require from your life insurance, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, possibly including your current income, spouse’s income, the size of your mortgage (in addition to other liabilities), number of children, educational expenses and final expenses for funeral arrangements.

• What type? You can essentially choose between two basic types of life insurance: term and permanent. As its name suggests, term insurance is designed to provide coverage for a designated period, such as 10 or 20 years. Generally speaking, term insurance is quite affordable for most people, especially when they buy policies as young adults. On the other hand, permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, is usually considerably more expensive than term insurance. This is because permanent insurance premiums, in addition to providing a death benefit, help build cash value, which you can typically access through loans or withdrawals, giving you additional flexibility should your financial needs change over time.

In choosing between term and permanent insurance, you’ll want to evaluate several issues, such as how long you think you’ll need coverage and how much you can afford to pay in premiums.

Finding out about the benefits, costs and types of life insurance can help you make informed choices to help protect your family for years to come — so don’t delay learning what you need to know.

We may stand with our first forever, or we may in time move on to newer and better friends, cars or homes. And yet the heart and mind will always reserve a special place for romantic memories of our first.

Pre-approval will help you establish a realistic buying budget that considers all of your housing expenses including taxes, insurance, utilities and if applicable, association fees. Once you’ve got your housing budget determined and financing pre-approved, it’s important to shop effectively because attractive properties can go off the market before you’ve even seen them. Leverage technology to make your search quicker and more effective. Start by viewing MLS listings and saving searches on a quality real estate search tool. Focus your search on properties that have the features you

need and are within your pre-approved price range. A good site will allow you to target very specific areas, it will accurately list only currently available properties, and will offer you the option of automated email updates. Next, meet with licensed real estate professionals and establish “buyer representation” with one whom you are comfortable. This will commit the Realtor to the fiduciary responsibilities of confidentiality, full disclosure of any knowledge that might benefit you, loyalty, lawful obedience and protecting and promoting your interest as a buyer, first and foremost. Like a matchmaker, your Realtor will bring professional power to the search and help you find homes you may not have been able to find on your own. Further, they can help you obtain valuable information on the home’s condition, location and site, provide advice on market conditions, current prices and issues that may impact later resale values, and they can help you negotiate the best price when you do place an offer. All this shouldn’t cost you anything to avail yourself of their services as a buyer, because the buyer’s agent’s commission is usually paid by the seller. By Michael Lazzeri Over 100 years ago, the National Child Labor Committee used photos of children doing industrial work to demand change in America.

Several states adopted child labor laws, and after much debate and several setbacks, the Fair Labor Standards Act became law in 1938. Its protections included the nation’s foundational child labor laws, including restrictions on the age of workers and hours they can toil.

As we reflect on this Labor Day holiday almost a century later, we must not overlook the recent federal investigation conducted by my staff in the Midwest that found children working overnight to clean a Nebraska meatpacking plant with caustic chemicals amid razor-sharp cutting machines and tools. Shocking facts that reveal the ugly truth that some businesses are still illegally employing young teens and putting them at risk.

Since 2018, the U.S. Department of Labor has seen a 69 percent increase in children employed in violation of federal child labor laws. Hard-fought progress made five generations ago to eliminate child labor exploitation is being undone in cities and communities across the country.

America is better than that.

In February 2023, the Department of Labor launched an Interagency Task Force to Combat Child Labor Exploitation, bringing together federal agencies to improve information sharing, provide outreach and education to the public, and coordinate efforts to advance the health, education, and well-being of children in the U.S. The department has launched a National Strategic Enforcement Initiative on child labor and is using all of our enforcement and legal tools to stop companies from profiting illegally on the backs of children by taking violators to court and invoked the Fair Labor Standards Act “hot goods” provision to prevent shipment of goods produced using illegal child labor are also scrutinizing labor violations at all steps in industry supply chains.

To strengthen our efforts, our leadership has called on Congress to bolster protections for children and toughen penalties for companies that use child labor, which currently stand at a

That’s not high enough to be a deterrent for major profitable companies. Further, the Labor Department has requested increased funding for its enforcement agencies to investigate child labor cases and to expand outreach to employers, workers’ advocacy groups, schools and other community resources to educate employers and workers on the law.

We cannot put profitability ahead of the physical, emotional and educational well-being of children. That is not the basis for a sound and just economy. Our job is to make sure a teen’s work experience is positive and safe – and does not endanger them or interfere with their educational opportunities.

We cannot allow children in America to return to laboring in modern-day workhouses. Our national and state leaders must come to the table and work together to prevent the scourge of child labor abuse from again becoming an Americanmade tragedy.

We cannot build our economy on the backs of children. America was better than that 100 years ago, and America is better than that today.

This is part of God’s design for our lives in the fourth commandment too. Resting on the sabbath day is a holy act of stopping, turning away from our immediate problems, and turning to God in worship. Sabbath isn’t always the most convenient practice, but it’s so necessary for us.

The Daughter Called to Thank Me WOODROW WILCOX

On August 31, 2023, the daughter of a client phoned me to thank me for working to correct an expensive ambulance bill. Medicare had denied coverage. The bill was $1,628.

The ambulance company filed the claim as a non-emergency run. Medicare will not cover ambulance services that are for non-emergency transport. The client was transported from a hospital to a rehabilitation facility. But I noticed special facts that I believed made this an emergency ambulance transport within the guidelines that should be covered by Medicare.

I got the cooperation of the client’s doctor to explain the special circumstances in a letter to Medicare. I typed a letter that explained the facts and had the client sign the letter. I put all the evidence and statements in a package to appeal the Medicare decision.

I have not seen the papers from Medicare, but the daughter called me to tell me that

her mother got documents from Medicare and from the Medicare supplement insurance company which showed that Medicare and our client’s insurance policy paid for the ambulance service. So, I saved the client $1,628.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all our clients with Medicare medical bill problems without charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If the insurance agent or agency that you use does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana.

South Suburban College and Pace Bus Partner to Offer Fourth Pre-hiring Event on September 19 SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) and Pace Bus are pleased to announce a fourth pre-hiring event to provide a free Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit course for the next generation of professional bus operators in the Chicago Southland region. The college and transportation agency will offer a customized two-week course to assist qualified applicants in obtaining their CDL permit. To remove financial barriers for students to pursue and complete the program actively, Pace will cover the costs of tuition, training, books, fees, and other expenses associated with the program. In addition, SSC, in partnership with the Workforce Equity Initiative Grant, will provide a completion incentive for participants who complete the two-week course.

On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., SSC will host a pre-hiring event for job seekers to meet with Pace staff. During the 3-hour event, applicants will complete a screening process in the MB Financial Bank Room on SSC’s Main Campus, including application completion, an assessment questionnaire, and a background check. All candidates must bring a valid Illinois driver’s license and a DMV or Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) (also called Driving

Record Abstracts in Illinois) with no more than two infractions or tickets in the last five years.

Candidates are responsible for the cost of the MVR, which is $12.

Assessment results will be available 2-4 days after the event when candidates must complete an Illinois Department of Transportation physical and drug screening. Pace Bus will cover the cost of these screenings. Candidates who pass these screenings will be enrolled in a training course that will take place at SSC’s Main Campus in the MB Financial Bank Room from October 16, 2023 through October 27, 2023. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Qualified candidates who complete the two-week course will transition to six-week on-the-job training with Pace.

Sheriff Dart Warns Public of Phone Scam Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning the public of telephone scams where callers identify as a Sheriff’s Office employee in an attempt to defraud victims.

In these scams, callers are using the actual names and respective titles of Sheriff’s Office employees and ordering victims to immediately provide personal information, such as a signature sample, or make payments over the phone.

The caller may also use legal or police jargon during the call to sound like a law enforcement

official and attempt to further intimidate the victims.

The public should be aware that these types of calls are scams. Sheriff’s officers do not ask for immediate compliance with orders over the phone. They also do not ask for payment over the phone or via a money transfer app.

Individuals who believe they have been a victim of these scams are asked to call the Sheriff’s Police Investigation Section at 708865-4896 or the Sheriff’s Police non-emergency number at 847-635-1188.

They often found refuge and replenishment with local abolitionists such as the Jan Ton family that owned a farm near Beaubien Woods Forest Preserve on the Little Calumet River, which we’ll visit.

Leading this educational outing on the history of the UGRR in the Calumet region are Professor Larry McClellan, foremost authority on the Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois, and Tom Shepherd of the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project.

Adults who cannot read experience difficulty completing many daily activities that others may take for granted, a disadvantage in today’s competitive job market.

SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

The September training will occur at the South Suburban College Main Campus in South Holland, IL, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 5 through September 21, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This 12-hour program culminates with literacy training certification.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m selling my home in a great area. We had many offers and the one we took was $20,000 over the asking price. The buyers are putting in a lot of cash and are only financing $100,000 of the $600,000 sale price. We’re afraid that our house will not be worth that much, but does the lender care?

Answer: Lenders care very much about value and risk. They will make a loan based on the sale price or the appraised value, whichever is less. If a buyer wants to pay more, that’s okay -- as long as the additional price is not paid with lender funds.

You have a home selling for $600,000 and a borrower who is putting up $500,000 in cash. The lender is providing $100,000. The lender wants to be certain that in the event of

foreclosure the property has sufficient value to re-pay the loan.

In this case, even if the property sold at a 75 percent discount from the sale price, there would still be enough value to re-pay the lender. From the lender’s perspective, this is a loan situation with virtually no risk because there is so much equity in the property -- that $500k put up by the purchaser.

Sheriff Dart Hosts Overdose Prevention Event COOK COUNTY, IL – In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart and partnering organizations raised awareness today about the opioid overdose epidemic and reinforced ongoing prevention efforts at the Cook County Jail.

The event highlighted the importance and success of lifesaving naloxone distribution at the jail, which has provided more than 24,000 overdose reversal kits since 2016 to those leaving custody. Surveys of those who received naloxone through the program indicate that at least 39% have been used in a life-threatening overdose situation, likely saving thousands of lives.

For today’s event, Sheriff staff and volunteers from partner organizations with the South Side Heroin/Opioid Task Force provided naloxone training to thousands of individuals in custody and engaged visitors and the public with critical information on treatment options.

“Americans are dying at an alarming rate, but our efforts in the jail and in the community are saving lives. This work must continue,” Sheriff Dart said. “We will work closely with our partners in public health and the community to do everything we can to address this crisis.”

In 2022 nearly 2,000 people were killed by an opioid overdose in Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

That is more than the total number of people killed by homicide or car accidents, combined.

More than 91% of the overdose cases involved fentanyl – a powerful drug that is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.

Ringing the alarm alongside Sheriff Dart was Dr. Priscilla Ware of Cook County Health’s Cermak Health Services and Florence Wright with the South Side Heroin/Opioid Task Force.

Both organizations emphasized the importance of working together to help combat the opioid epidemic in Cook County.

“The risk of a person fatally overdosing increases 10-fold after release from a jail or prison. That’s why it is essential that we continue to collaborate to expand access to equitable and patient-centered substance use disorder treatment both in our communities and in correctional settings,” said Dr. Ware, Cook County Health Chair of Correctional Health and Medical Director of Cermak Health Services.

Cermak Health Services offers the only certified Opioid Treatment Program in a correctional facility in the State of Illinois, providing Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT), along with comprehensive medical and mental health care to support patients at the Cook County Jail on their recovery journey.

“This critical work demands co-operation between all stakeholders – including state and local officials, law enforcement, and community organizations like the task force,” Wright said. “We are thrilled to be working with the Sheriff’s Office to address this deadly public health emergency.”

The Cook County Jail is a national leader in providing substance use disorder treatment in custody. So far this year, nearly 1,000 individuals have taken part in the jail’s primary SUD treatment programs, and thousands more have taken part in mental health programs that also address drug use. Individuals who leave custody are also provided naloxone kits and important connections to continue their treatment.

“It can be extremely difficult for people to overcome addiction and access the treatment their lives depend on,” Sheriff Dart said.

“People have to know we will do whatever it takes to help.”

Sheriff Dart also started the Community Resource Center (CRC) to connect the public to important resources, including SUD treatment.

Is Being Grateful the Key to Happiness?

by Janice R Newman Searching for the key to happiness has been a universal search and pursuit of people for centuries. Everyone wants to be happy and enjoy life in their personal relationships with family friends, work, purpose, finances, and overall well-being. People seek a fulfilling and joyful life. One concept of achieving happiness is having a spirit of gratefulness. Being grateful is to be thankful, by acknowledging and showing appreciation for the positive aspects of life amid challenges and external circumstances. Gratitude can shift our focus from what’s lacking to what’s present.

Finding happiness through gratitude is about fostering an attitude of positivity and acknowledging the blessings we have, no matter how small they may seem. The bible verse Psalm 118:24 (NASB 1995) reminds us to be grateful daily “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” This is a message for us to appreciate and rejoice in the blessing of being alive. Grateful individuals typically have higher levels of contentment and life satisfaction. Here are a few ways being grateful can increase our levels of happiness.

• Positive Relationships: Be selective in your relationships and how much time and effort you engage in them. You must be selective because you become the closest five people you hang around the most. You will start taking on other people’s character, personality, and mannerisms, the more you’re around them. A negative bad apple can ruin the whole batch, so watch your apples carefully.

• Shift Focus to Positive: Focus on what you have and what’s going right versus the negative of what’s went wrong, what’s missing, or how you could have done better.

“Woulda”, “Coulda”, and “Shoulda” do not belong in your vocabulary. Reflect on past experiences, on moments when you genuinely felt happy. What were you doing? Who were you with? What aspects of those past experiences brought you happiness?

• Set Reasonable Goals: Set goals that are

attainable but not exceedingly too high to reach or that may cause pain and depression because you didn’t achieve them. Unrealistic expectations and goals can set individuals up for disappointment and a sense of failure you will have difficulties in enjoying what you did accomplish. Gratitude teaches us to appreciate our achievements.

• Practice Gratefulness: Practicing gratefulness reduces our need for comparison to others and helps improve us mentally and emotionally. It reduces envy and dissatisfaction with our lives. Focusing on the positive aspects of your life can counteract negative thoughts, emotions, and reactions. It can contribute to lower stress levels and can improve the quality of sleep. Being grateful contributes to less tossing and turning at times because of depression or focusing on disappointments.

• Embracing Adversity with Faith: The story of Job from the Bible serves as a powerful example of how gratitude can endure even in the face of immense adversity.

Despite losing everything, Job remained steadfast in his faith and grateful for what he still had. This resilience in the midst of challenges can inspire us to find strength and gratitude even in difficult situations.

Cultivating a spirit of gratitude takes practice. It’s changing our mindset to view our lives differently. It’s a conscious choice to focus on the blessings we have rather than what we lack. This reminds me of when Jesus focused on what he had to perform a miracle to feed the multitudes in Matthew 14 despite the disciples’ negativity of “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish” (Matt 14:17 NIV). How often do we miss out on being happy and become depressed or downtrodden because we look at the lack, instead of being overjoyed and grateful for what we do have?
