JUNETEENTH JUNE 19TH, 2023

Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois Press Foundation award grants to 19 school journalism programs SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Farm Bureau and the Illinois Press Foundation today announce the awarding of grants to 19 scholastic journalism efforts throughout the state. Of the 19 recipients, 18 are high schools and one is an elementary school.

The awards are part of the Illinois High School Journalism Grants Program offered by the Illinois Press Foundation and financially sponsored for a third consecutive year by Illinois Farm Bureau.

More than $25,000 total in grants will be distributed to the schools in the fall to pay for laptops, cameras, broadcasting equipment, newspaper printing costs, website hosting fees and more. The Illinois Press Foundation Board of Directors’ Education Committee approved the grant recipients.

“Each year of the grant program, we see an expansion of learning opportunities for students in the schools we visit, and that’s exciting,” said Jeff Rogers, executive director of the Illinois Press Foundation. “Today’s high school journalism students are doing it all – writing, editing, shooting photos and videos, producing newspapers, running websites, doing broadcast pieces.

But no matter what format they’re using, these students are still engaged in and learning the foundational elements of journalism.”

Matt Wettersten, executive director of marketing news and communications at Illinois Farm Bureau, congratulated the 2023 grant recipients.

“The talent inside each of these programs is promising, and helping these programs develop and grow is rewarding,” Wettersten said.

Korbin Collins is the manager of the Washington and Perry County Farm Bureau. Okawville High School in Washington County last year received a $1,100 grant to pay for website hosting fees, video equipment and an Adobe Creative Cloud license.

“This grant gives students a unique opportunity to learn more about journalism while getting real-life, hands-on experiences and producing professional quality journalism for our community,” Collins said.

This year’s grant recipients include: • Carlyle High School, $1,500 to purchase 6 Chromebooks and accident protection.

• Carterville High School, $1,000 to purchase 2 electronic dry storage cabinets for cameras and accessories.

• Edwardsville High School, $1,320 to purchase 2 microphones, mic stand, digital voice recorder, stream deck, capture card, webcam, green screen backdrop, and Ring light kit.

• Harrisburg High School, $1,173 to purchase a camera, camera mount microphone, and lens.

• Jacksonville High School, $1,000 to pay the website hosting fee and to purchase an iPad and software.

• John Hancock College Preparatory High School in Chicago, $1,500 to pay for some of the cost to print the school newspaper for a full school year.

• Lockport Township High School, $800 to purchase a

camera and accessories.

• Madison Elementary School in South Holland, $1,500 to purchase a camera and memory card.

• Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School in Chicago, $1,500 to purchase 3 cameras and accessories.

• Morgan Park High School in Chicago, $1,214 to purchase 3 camera lenses.

• Normal Community West High School, $1,500 to purchase a camera with 2 lenses, and to pay for printing costs for the student newspaper.

• Putnam County High School in Granville, $1,500 to purchase paper for printing, 25 editions of “NewsHound’s Guide to Student Journalism, and one year’s worth of domain name and website service for the student publication’s digital edition.

• Schurz High School in Chicago, $1,500 to pay for the setup, hosting fee, site booster, training, and Classroom Manager for the student publication website.

• St. Charles North High School, $1,140 to purchase an iPad with keyboard, a teleprompter kit, an Apple pencil and 2 microphones.

• Thornridge High School in Dolton, $1,500 to purchase a camera and LED studio light kit.

• West Chicago Community High School, $1,500 to purchase 3 cameras.

• Wheeling High School, $900 to purchase a wireless video transmission system.

• William Howard Taft High School in Chicago, $1,500 to pay for website hosting fees, 2 cameras, camera lenses and SD cards.

• York High School in Elmhurst, $1,500 to purchase a MacBook Pro. The Illinois Farm Bureau is a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation, a national organization of farmers and ranchers. Founded in 1916, IFB is a non-profit, membership organization directed by farmers who join through their county Farm Bureau. IFB has a total membership of more than 378,237 and a voting membership of 77,909. IFB represents three out of four Illinois farmers.

The Illinois Press Foundation is dedicated to promoting and protecting free expression through educational activities that foster the practice and respect of First Amendment principles and values, to enhance the quality of services provided by newspapers to their communities, and to support reading and literacy efforts.

The IPF was established in 1982. Its news service, Capitol News Illinois, has provided daily coverage of state government for Illinois’ newspapers since it was formed in 2019. The Foundation also sponsors annual summer journalism workshops for high school students at Eastern Illinois University and University of Illinois-Springfield, scholarships for students in the UIS Public Affairs Reporting program, and in the fall will award grants to collegiate journalism programs.

Avoid Sneaky Doctors and Medical Firms WOODROW WILCOX

A client sent me some papers and asked for help. I read the papers sent and recommended that she come to my office to work with me. We met on June 13, 2023. I spent almost two hours with her. The client is from Lowell, Indiana.

Her problem was that her doctor or medical firm were sneaky. The medical firm had contracted with Medicare regarding their services. But the medical firm (doctor) never contracted with Medicare to sell and file claims for DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT. In that way, they could sell DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT to patients without filing a claim with Medicare and without giving the patient a Medicare discount.

In our client’s case, the medical firm charged her $250 for orthotics for her shoes.

The medical firm insisted that she pay $250 before the orthotic devices were ordered. I estimate that this cost our client over $200 more than what she would have paid if the claim had been filed with Medicare originally.

Not contracting with Medicare while selling DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT to patients creates a cash bonanza for the medical firm while exploiting senior citizens

and taking much more money from them than would be allowed if the medical firm was contracted with Medicare to sell DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT. If the medical firm did not sell DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT but was willing to help a patient place an order with a company that sold those and was contracted with Medicare to sell DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, that would be different. In that case the doctor or medical firm would be treating a senior citizen on Medicare ethically.

My advice to people is that if a medical firm or doctor is not contracted with Medicare in every area of practice, walk away and find another doctor.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana.

He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

What’s Price Got to Do with It? MIKE BUDER Last month we lost Tina Turner, a music icon. In 1984 she released a number one top single titled “What’s Love Got to Do with It”. Sometimes I think there should be a remake of her classic hit. The new version could be dedicated to the stubborn sellers who refuse to lead the market with competitive pricing. The new song would be entitled “What’s Price Got to Do with It?” The background singers would then sing out loud EVERYTHING! The other day I was evaluating a home for a seller that had went unsold with another real estate broker after 6 months on the market. I asked the seller why they felt their home remained unsold. The reply caused me to momentarily close my eyelids and roll my eyes. The seller said, “It can’t be the price”.

Really! Their small home is neat and tidy but sits on a major arterial street. The selling solution is simple. Move the property away from the busy street or periodically lower the price.

Selling a house does not have to take longer than the gestation period for a baby.

It should not take several agents, dozens of showings, multiple open houses, florescent

helium balloons tied to signs, baked bread aromas, Saint Joseph statues, daily novenas, pilgrimages to sacred shrines or incense and peppermints. For Tina’s sake, adjust the price.

A sage once said, “The only constant is change”. The world is changing. People are changing. The real estate market is changing.

The stock market changes. Styles change.

Why can’t some sellers realize at times your price needs to change in order to attract more buyers and better offers?

Personally, I feel Saint Joseph has better things to do than help sellers locate buyers for properties that are overpriced.

From my 41 years of selling homes in the South Suburbs of Chicago my words of wisdom for a seller in the 2023 real estate market are “A house properly priced is Half-Sold.”

As of 2001, scientific studies had identified 150 precise conditions that must be in place and work together perfectly for life to exist on Earth. Consider several of those conditions. If Earth were slightly larger, increased gravity would make life impossible.

FAREWELL 10TH WARD ALDERMAN SUE GARZA: A Festive Gala at the United Steelworkers Union Hall, 135th and Torrence Avenue was the setting for Sue to say goodby to her family, friends and supporters, Saturday June 17, 2023. The Steel hall, where her Dad, the late Edward Sadlowski was a prominent figure was an important part of her personal and professional political life over the last 8 years of her Aldermanic career in Chicago’s 10th Ward. From 5 pm to 12 Midnight, the hall rocked with fun and excitement and old and new friends catching up and congratulating Sue and her husband, Raul, pictured here. In brief remarks, Sadowski Garza praised her staff and supporters for their friendship and loyalty.

Garza reminisced fondly about her father, Edward Sadlowski, was a nationally known progressive American labor leader associated with “Steelworkers Fightback,” a rank-andfile movement to better the working lives of steelworkers, “and restore union democracy.”

Ed’s father before him had been a steelworker and union organizer at Inland Steel in East Chicago, In. Ed Sadlowski distinguished himself nationally as a tireless union organizer throughout his life and his daughter Sue Garza followed his lead. LARC on the Links Returns to Lincolnshire Country Club Lansing, Illinois: LARC, a not-for-profit organization providing supports and services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will host its Annual Golf Outing on Friday, August 4, at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete. Registration begins at 11 AM and a shotgun start is at 12:30 PM. The event, titled “LARC on the Links,” features 18 holes of golf, lunch, games, contests, and complimentary select refreshments on the course. A recognition dinner following the scramble is also included. This year’s event will feature over $30,000 in hole-in-one prizes.

Golf-dinner packages are $200 per person. Dinner-only guests are $70 per person.

LARC is seeking golfers, sponsorships, as well as in-kind donations for their raffle. Sponsorship opportunities range in price from $200 to $3,500.

Smaller sponsorships include hole signage, and larger corporate packages include complimentary foursomes.

In-kind donations, such as gift cards and gift certificates from area restaurants and businesses, will help to provide additional raffle revenue at the event.

“Lincolnshire is a beautiful course, and we are very excited to return,” said Executive Director Ernie Gonzalez. He added, “Proceeds from this year’s golf outing will be used to purchase equipment for a new

Biggest threats to comfortable retirement SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you save and invest for decades, you’d like to know you can retire without financial worries. Nonetheless, you still have to be aware of some threats to a comfortable retirement — and how to respond to them.

These threats include: • Inflation – Inflation has been high recently, but even a mild inflation rate can seriously erode your purchasing power.

In fact, with just a 3% inflation rate, your expenses could double in about 25 years — and your retirement could easily last that long. So, if you’re going to rely on your investment portfolio for a sizable part of your retirement income, you will need to own a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments, such as stocks or stock-based funds, whose potential returns can equal or exceed the inflation rate.

• Excessive withdrawals – Once you retire, you should establish a withdrawal rate for your portfolio — an amount you can take out each year and still feel secure that you won’t run out of money. Some people make the mistake of withdrawing too much, too soon, once they’re retired.

Your withdrawal rate should be based on several factors, including your age at retirement, the size of your portfolio and the amount of income you receive from other sources, such as Social Security.

A financial professional can help you determine a withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your needs.

• Market volatility – The financial markets will always fluctuate. When you’re still working, this volatility may not be such a problem, as you have years or decades to recover from short-term downturns. But when you retire, you don’t want to have to sell investments when their price is down. To help prevent this, you can tap into the cash in your portfolio, assuming you have enough to cover several months’ worth of living expenses. You could also draw on a CD

“ladder” — a group of CDs that mature at different times — to provide you with resources for the next few years and allow your equity investments time to recover their value.

• Unexpected costs – You had them when you were working, and you’ll probably have them when you’re retired: the furnace that breaks down, the car that needs a major repair, and so on.

But if you’ve established an emergency fund containing a year’s worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account, you may be able to “ride out” these costs without jeopardizing your investment portfolio. Be sure to keep these reserves separate from your typical day-today accounts to avoid the temptation of spending your emergency money.

• Health – Retirees may face more health concerns than younger people, and those concerns often come with larger medical bills. That’s why it’s important to maximize the benefits from Medicare or your Medicare Advantage plan. Also, if you contributed to a Health Savings Account (HSA) while you were working, and you haven’t depleted it, you can use the money in retirement. As long as the HSA funds are used for qualified medical expenses, withdrawals are tax- and penalty-free, and won’t be included in your income. This could help keep your income below certain levels, lower your Medicare premiums or avoid the 3.8% surtax on net investment income that can be assessed on high-net-worth taxpayers.

Retirement can be a pleasant time in your life — and you’ll enjoy it more if you’re prepared for the challenges that face all retirees.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our offer to purchase was rejected by the homeowner. Our agent said they did not give a reason for the rejection.

What could have happened?

Answer: Rejected offers cause home buyer’s considerable disappointment. You’ve found the home of your dreams and you’ve made an offer. Your hopes are high, and then—BOOM! The homeowner doesn’t want to sell it to you.

It begs the question: Why? What went wrong? Purchase offers are usually rejected for these common reasons, and most have dollar signs attached.

The seller might believe that the buyer isn’t serious about purchasing the property if the offer is too low. Sellers can easily feel insulted and might be too angry to respond.

They’ll reject the offer outright with no further discussion.

The seller might also feel that it’s too early to look at less-than-list-price offers if the property has just come on the market, and sellers almost certainly won’t consider them if they’ve received multiple offers.

Your agent should always touch base with the listing agent to find out whether the seller has any specific requirements or hot buttons.

But sometimes listing agents include helpful hints in the agent remarks portion of the MLS.

In either case, write these concerns into your offer. You might be able to offer a longer closing date if the seller needs a later closing date or speed up your closing in the opposite situation—the seller is anxious to get this deal done by a certain deadline.

Increase the deposit. If the seller wants substantial earnest money. Offer to buy the property “as is” after providing for a home inspection if the seller is concerned about repairs.

It can be as simple as the seller wanting a lender’s preapproval letter from a reputable lender. One that your agent knows will get the job done. Sellers want assurance that you’re qualified for financing, so they can proceed knowing this buyer will get approved.

It’s uncommon for a seller to simply reject an offer outright. Go over your offer again with your Realtor, keeping in mind what we mentioned earlier, to avoid making the same mistake the second time around.

Two Individuals in Custody Indicted on Felony Charges for Concealing Narcotics in Cook County Jail A Cook County Grand Jury indicted two individuals in custody at the Cook County Jail after a Sheriff’s Office investigation found them in possession of paper soaked in synthetic cannabinoids, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

On April 27, jail staff recovered strips of drug-soaked paper in the right sock of Alexander Hansen, 19, of Chicago, who was being housed in Division 6. The next day, jail staff recovered drug-soaked paper hidden in a notebook being carried by Kiante Byrd, 22, of Chicago, while he was being housed in Division 11.

In each case, the contraband subsequently tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids.

On Tuesday, grand jurors issued indictments charging both men with one count each of Possession of Contraband in a Penal

Institution, a Class 1 felony.

Hansen has been held in custody at the jail without bail since Sept. 29, 2022 on charges of armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon/vehicle/no FOID. Byrd has been held at the jail without bail since July 3, 2020 for first-degree murder.

The charges are part of the Sheriff’s Office’s efforts to address the danger of drug and chemical-laced paper that has been a growing trend in correctional facilities across the country, including the Cook County Jail, which has had to institute numerous new policies, including increasing the searching of mail and regulating paper brought into the facility, to protect staff and those in custody.

Murder Ballad is the dramatic story of a love triangle gone wrong, centering on Sara, an uptown girl who seems to have it all, but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her.

The Towle Theater is pleased to welcome back past Towle Theater cast members Beck Buechel (Chicago) previously seen in Night Tide & Fun Home, Natalie Rae (Chicago) seen in Standby & A Fabulous 50’s Christmas, Ryan Alan Jones (Berwyn) last seen in Reefer Madness and A Fabulous 50’s Christmas and Christopher Place (Chicago) who was seen in Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Musical Radio Play.

Murder Ballad runs July 7-9, 14-16. Performances on Fridays and Saturdays are at 8pm and Sundays are at 2pm. The box office opens 1 hour prior to performance time. Tickets are only $24 and must be paid for in advance are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Group rates are available. There is no late seating. Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to curtain.

The Towle Theater is located in beautiful (heavily under construction) downtown Hammond at 5205 Hohman Avenue.

Parking is available just off Fayette Street and only steps away from our alley entrance. Please note that Hohman Avenue is closed from Russell Street to Sibley until the fall. Age is Just a Number

by Janice R Newman Pick a number 0 through 100. Say 18, 21, 40, 50, 65, or any number. Attach the number with a label of age and it gives a different meaning. However, AGE IS JUST A NUMBER! Age should not stop you from reaching your goals, obtaining higher education, starting a business, getting married, or even retiring. Throughout history and even more today outstanding individuals accomplish feats at various ages that don’t correlate to the norm. David was a teenager when he defeated Goliath. Colonel Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, was almost 70 selling his famous chicken recipe.

Even, my husband, Philip, started college at South Suburban College in South Holland at 58. David and others had to overcome obstacles such as age by determination, a positive mindset, and having strong character to achieve one’s dreams.

Determination plays a crucial role in overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals at any age. Determination is a strong internal drive that provides the motivation and focuses to enable you to keep striving forward toward your goals versus abandoning them at the smallest challenge or setbacks. Determination fuels your passion and persistence to seek new opportunities, acquire new skills, and challenge norms to take responsibility for your success. Determination allows you to harness inner drive and tenacity. With determination, your actions must be unwavering with the unwillingness to ever give up, which is reinforced by having a positive mindset.

A positive mindset is necessary to keep you on the path of achievement despite age.

David had a positive mindset that he could defeat the giant Goliath with a slingshot. His mindset increased his courage and influenced his confidence in his abilities to face the formidable opponent that was creating fear in the troops (1 Samuel 17, NIV). He believed in his abilities through God and did not allow fear to hold him back despite his age and lack of military experience. He believed he could accomplish the goal and went headstrong into battle to complete the task. He had trust in God and focused on a solution to the task of

defeating Goliath versus his limitations and obstacles. David’s mindset was focused, goaloriented, and adaptable to the situation. Age does not defeat a goal if you have a positive mindset with the belief that you cannot fail along with building a strong personal character.

You can build your personal character to overcome age-related barriers by challenging your limiting beliefs. Challenge the notion that age restricts your potential by developing more faith in your abilities, skills, and strengths.

Character skills such as resilience and persistence are vital to adapting strategies to contribute to achieving goals. You must have humility and the willingness to learn to seek guidance and advice from others, display a humble attitude, and embrace innovative new approaches that can assist you in achieving your goals. Gaining wisdom can come at any age. Be open-minded to adjust to opportunities or challenges. Become more disciplined by developing strong time management skills and prioritizing manageable tasks. Building your character throughout your life strengthens your ability to reach goals despite age.

Determination, along with a positive mindset, and strong personal character will help you accomplish remarkable things despite your age. Abraham and Sarah were beyond the age to have descendants to fulfill God’s promise. Moses was around 80 years old to lead the Israelites out of slavery. Mikaila Ulmer was 11 years old when she got a contract with Whole Foods for her BeeSweet Lemonade. Tatum O’Neal was the youngest Academy Award winner at 10 years old.

All of them and more defeated odds despite their age. If you pay attention to the number, allowing discouragement, negativity, and failure to occupy your mind, you might miss your destiny. If you think age is an issue, it’s not. You must have belief, trust, and faith that what you desire is in God’s plan. Disregard the number and GO FOR IT! Y?
