The level of frustration for buyers today is through the roof…This seems to be the case in the local South Suburbs of Chicago as well as a good portion of the current national market. So many buyers for every listing that comes up in the Multiple Listing Service means that there are often five or more buyers knocking each other out to win the home. Buyers seeking closing cost assistance from sellers are finding it nearly impossible to get. Over the list price offers are common from buyers that missed out on prior listings even before they are notified of multiple offers from the listing agent. Now some buyers are starting to waive inspections and make low appraisal guarantees that they will kick in “X” dollars cash above a low lenders appraisal to get their offer accepted. Now that we are in a “for certain” seller’s market, let me introduce one caveat to prospective home sellers. Just because it’s a seller’s market doesn’t mean buyers will go nuts for a home in desperate need of carpet, paint, maintenance and repairs. Recently a new listing popped up in one of my buyer’s search profile. The property was a style that our buyer would like to get. It was priced the same as the identical home that sold on the next block which was professionally updated to the nines. The new listing screamed “I’m a hunk of junk”…clicking through the photos exposed holes in the carpet, scratches on the hardwood and a DIY kitchen update that didn’t look very well

done. There was clutter all over the home. It was such a sad display. Thankfully, I’m working with a buyer that can see beyond the condition and wanted to get in if they would be realistic on price. I made a phone call to the listing agent. I asked her if the seller was willing to come off the listing price since there were obvious areas in need of repair. In a way only a completely confident and arrogant agent could answer, she scoffed and replied, “Why should they come off their price? There’s nothing else on the market!” My attempt at reasoning with this agent was met with the absolute confidence that they would get a full price offer by the end of the day. Well that was almost 30 days ago and the house is still for sale. My gut feeling is that it will continue to sit there unsold with very little showing interest if they don’t get real on price. No matter the market conditions, if a home is truly not worth what you are asking, buyers will wait. Professional agents know that you can only get the top of the market when you show top of the market. You still can’t throw any crappy house on the market and expect to take down a record high price. RICHARD ZEKVELD The rainbow is everywhere. Rainbow flags fly from flagpoles and adorn buildings. Companies incorporate its colors into their logos and institutions feature it prominently. June is Pride month and the LGBTQ+ movement has effectively branded itself with the rainbow. Every time you see a rainbow, I invite you to direct your mind to its original meaning – a great promise God made to humanity long ago. God had destroyed an evil world in a terrible flood. However, he spared a family of eight in a large boat. God promised them, “I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:11, NIV84). He then attached this promise to a breath-taking rainbow. The ancient Hebrew word for ‘rainbow’ in the Bible is simply ‘bow’. God hung up his bow in the clouds. It is not pointed downward at humanity. It is pointed upward at his own heart. God himself would take our place to suffer the death sentence our sin and rebellion deserve. He would take an arrow to the heart for us. God came in Jesus to fulfill his promise. When Jesus bled and died on a Roman cross for our sins, he took an arrow to the heart for us. He absorbed God’s judgment for our sin. Let the rainbow direct your focus to Christ. Ask him to forgive you for your sin and rebellion. Believe that he took the hit for you. Entrust your life to his care and control. Join a church that worships and serves him. Christ promises that you will survive the storm of final judgment when he returns to make all things new, including you. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

Pappas Unveils New Online Tool To Weigh Government Debt Burden On Individual Property Owners

The Cook County Assessor’s Office Re-Opens for In-Person Appointments

Cook County – Property owners for the first time can find out what portion of local government debt falls on them, thanks to a new, groundbreaking online tool created by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas. “Most reports identify government debt as an amount per person,” Pappas said. “My latest study takes a more targeted approach by showing debt in relation to each property in Cook County.” The new, unique tool reveals that Willis Tower carries local government debt of nearly $289 million, equal to 41.5% of the iconic skyscraper’s $697 million value. A Riverdale house carries $31,800 in local debt, equal to 48% of its $67,000 value. And the debt on a house on Hodgkins has $127,400 in debt, equal to 25.7% of its $496,000 value. By contrast, the debt on properties in more affluent, lower-tax areas, like Barrington Hills and Winnetka, falls below 10% of the value of the properties in those locations. These new calculations are available at

CHICAGO / COOK COUNTY – The Cook County Assessor’s Office announces the resumption of in-person visits by the public to its downtown and branch offices, in accordance with Cook County’s reopening plan on Monday, June 14, 2021. All in-person visits are by appointment only and will require a mask, physical distancing, and a health screening. These requirements apply to the downtown location as well as the Markham and Skokie branch offices. Bridgeview is currently closed due to construction. “With reductions to Chicago’s COVID numbers, we’re able to resume in-person access to our office while keeping both staff and the public safe, said Assessor Fritz Kaegi. “During the entirety of the pandemic our office has continued to function remotely and offer exemplary customer service virtually and over the phone. Property owners should know they can continue to apply for many of our services online.”

cookcountytreasurer.com, where property owners can click the purple box on the homepage and search their address to see their local debt burden compared to the value of their home in both dollar and percentage amounts. The new methodology also allowed Pappas to better compare the overall debt burdens borne by residents of any Cook County city or village. That exercise revealed the burden of local government debt varies greatly throughout the county, with generally heavier burdens in less-affluent suburbs where the populations are more than 50% Black or Latino. The taxes tend to be much higher in many of those minority areas, an indication that more debt leads to higher property taxes. “Property purchases in Cook County come with a hidden credit card balance, in the form of local government debt,” Pappas said. “Property owners end up paying down that debt, on top of also covering their mortgage, utility and maintenance costs.”

Indiana’s Single Sign-On Portal adds service and surpasses 700,000 users Access Indiana (https://access.in.gov) continues to grow in users and services. This week the single sign-on service crossed 700,000 users, shortly after adding its 41st service. The service is growing quickly, adding more than 200,000 users in the past 66 days. The newest service available is the Department of Labor’s new Youth Employment System (YES), a system for Hoosier employers to comply with a new youth-employment law that goes into effect on July 1. The new requirement will eliminate the need for work permits in Indiana for minor employees, and shift the responsibility of tracking and reporting youth employment from schools to employers.

With an Access Indiana account, users can use the same username and password to securely work with state government. More services are continually being added to Access Indiana, with the ultimate goal of needing only one user identity to interact online with the state. Users have access to many services on their Access Indiana dashboard including the Indiana Vaccination Portal, the Job Seeker Portal, obtaining hunting and fishing licenses, and renewing professional licenses, including those for nurses and doctors. Users can also update all of their account information, like email and phone number, by signing in at https://access.in.gov.

June is National Dairy Month. Eat yogurt and support dairy farmers! SOUTH HOLLAND MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION

HOLD STEADY ELDER PHYLLIS NEUMAN BROWN, FREE SPIRIT MINISTERIAL WORSHIP CENTER It has been quite apparent lately that things in this life are changing. We are or have been experiencing situations and circumstances like none other. At times, we may feel like a ship without a sail that is tossed back and forth. Other times, we may feel like we are on a wobbling ladder that is swaying side to side. It is in those moments of time that we must remember that we have a choice. We can fear an inevitable outcome or we can steady ourselves and ride out the storm. Life, and the issues that we face as we navigate through it, can be hard, challenging and scary. The one thing that helps a Christian to hold steady and survive during these storms of life is the assurance that God is with us to help us. Isaiah 41:3 states, “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” It is God who holds us as we grab His hand. All we need to do is hold steady to God as He “takes hold” of our hand and our

life. “Do not fear.” He will help. We stress when we feel alone and helpless. Then our helplessness creates hopelessness. We have never been promised a life without problems and challenges, but we have been assured that God would never leave us nor forsake us. We are assured that with God all things are possible; therefore, we do not need to lose hope. During those challenging moments of life, I want to encourage you to hold steady. Maintain emotional groundedness, stay firm in your determination, remain consistent and unwavering in the knowledge that God is with you always. He will help you and He will bring you out of whatever situation you are facing. Hold steady to the fact that He knows how much you can bear and that He has already prepared a way of escape for you. You are more than a conqueror and God is always concerned about the things that concern you. Hold Steady and watch God work!

Speaking Of Seniors

NO MAGIC WAND WOODROW WILCOX On June 4, 2021, I wrote a letter to a client about a medical bill that she questioned. With some editing to protect her privacy, here is the letter that I sent to her. You sent a medical bill to our Valpo office and they forwarded it to me. The bill seeks a balance of $86.24 for services rendered on 2/18/2021. I phoned your Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of this bill. It reported that Medicare ruled that this $86.24 is part of your Medicare Part B annual deductible. You are responsible for that. You bought a Plan G Medicare supplement plan. Plan G policies DO NOT pay the Medicare Part B annual deductible. The plans that do pay that deductible cost more. If you told your agent that you wanted a good policy with monthly premiums as low as possible, it would be natural for the agent to suggest a Plan G

policy. By suggesting a Plan G policy, the agent saved you money. Once you pay the Medicare Part B annual deductible, THEN, for the rest of the year, Medicare and your policy will pay 100% of Medicare approved Part B claims. That is how it works. I can’t change the system. I don’t have a magic wand to change it. If you have more questions, please contact your insurance agent. Thank you for allowing us to help you with your insurance needs. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved senior citizens over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be purchased at bookstores and online.

Common symptoms of PTSD and how to manage stress Trauma comes in all shapes and sizes. No one persons’ trauma is the same. How those that have lived through, witnessed and experienced trauma perceive and cope with it varies from person to person. This trauma can impact lives in immeasurable and drastic ways, likely in the form of PTSD. With June being PTSD Awareness Month and June 27th marking National PTSD Awareness Day, now is a crucial time to bring awareness to this complex disorder… to encourage conversations on the topic and to encourage our leaders to find healthy solutions and offer support to those struggling with it every day. Dr. Teralyn Sell, Psychotherapist and brain health expert, touches on the impact that PTSD has on one’s long-term mental health and how loved ones and colleagues can support those struggling with it. “PTSD’s impact on mental health still hasn’t hit mainstream understanding. We would like to get your perspective on how PTSD can better be understood by loved ones and friends of individuals who have PTSD, and any tips you have on managing it, both as someone who has PTSD and as someone trying to support their loved one with PTSD,” says Dr. Teralyn Sell. “However, as we learn more about symptomology we begin to see a few more common signs that someone may be impacted by a traumatic experience such as depression and anxiety, problems sleeping, being triggered by a smell, sound or memory, disinterest in things that used to bring joy, being withdrawn, negativity, irritability, risky behavior and addictions to name a few.” Here are some common symptoms of PTSD that Dr. Teralyn Sell says we should all be aware of: Symptom #1: Sensory Triggers Your senses do a great job of alerting us to danger. For instance, we smell milk to see if it is spoiled and recoil if it smells off. Often a trauma event is linked to a particular smell. A common smell is that of gunfire. However, a pneumatic nail gun also smells like gunfire. This could trigger a flashback or a body sensation of tenseness or anxiety. Other things like perfumes or deodorants can do the same thing. The limbic system (emotional center) of the brain is triggered by smell and induces positive and negative memories. Instead, grab an essential oil that is grounding such as lavender or chamomile. It will trigger a relaxation response when you are triggered by smell. Symptom #2: Hypervigilance Hypervigilance is a state of alertness. If you find yourself tense in public, scanning your surroundings for threats or exits you might be experiencing hypervigilance. Avoiding people and places can also be a sign of hypervigilance. Notice what your body is telling you, do you tense up in public, does your heart race or do your hands get sweaty? This could be a hypervigilant response to your environment. Instead, engage in some guided positive relaxation prior to going out into public. You can easily include some yoga stretches to help impact your vagus nerve (nervous

system superhighway) and head out of the home in a more relaxed state to begin with. If you find yourself becoming hypervigilant using long exhaled breathing and positive mantras to help you out. Symptom #3: Sleep Trouble Having problems sleeping is a hallmark of PTSD. Sometimes, you can’t turn your brain off to fall asleep, or you wake up from a nightmare or in a state of panic. There is a lot of emerging research that suggests cortisol levels may be to blame for these kinds of symptoms. Cortisol (stress hormone) doesn’t allow our bodies to fall asleep. Cortisol is trying to find the threat, even at night. Additionally, our minds are trying to process events and emotions during the night which can account for the nightmares. Try doing some breathing exercises before bed or when you wake up. Your heart is tied directly to your breath. If your heart is beating more than 100BPMs it will kick in adrenaline and cortisol and then you are in fight or flight mode before bed, sleep is elusive at that point. Instead, turn down your heart rate by using long, slow exhales (exhaling slows down your heart rate) for about 10 minutes. Here are Dr. Teralyn Sell’s top 3 tips on managing PTSD and how loved ones can support someone struggling with it: Tip #1: Seek Appropriate Trauma Counseling Let’s face it, not all therapists are skilled in trauma work. So, it is important to dig a little deeper into your selection of a therapist that is skilled in trauma work. There are several types of evidenced-based trauma treatment available so make sure you ask the therapist ‘what type of trauma therapy are you trained in and skilled in?’. Go ahead and ask the therapist if they have had any supervision for their trauma therapy skill set. Ask them how long the training was and did they do all parts of the training or only some. You would be surprised to learn that not all therapists have done full training with supervision components for trauma therapy. Tip #2: Keep Your Thinking Brain Online All Day There are many ways you can work on reducing stress response and dialing down your nervous system. One easy way to keep your thinking brain online is to keep cortisol levels in check. Make sure to eat protein every 2 hours. This will not only stabilize your blood sugar but will also fuel your brain’s neurotransmitters. Stable blood sugar will keep your fight or flight in check and not trigger adrenaline or cortisol. Tip #3: Validate Your Loved One’s Emotions If you support your loved one who has been through trauma, it’s important to validate their lived experience and emotions around that experience. Instead of telling that person to ‘get over it’ or engaging in argumentative behavior about it, take a step back and ask the person how you can assist them. Better yet, reflect back on how the person is feeling and support their emotional expression. Encouraging them to seek help in such a way that is supportive, not punitive and certainly not during an argument.

Young Illinoisan entrepreneurs fear their age hinders them from being taken seriously Any young budding entrepreneur who starts their own business is often reminded about a bleak statistic that more or less remains constant each year: that around 90% of startups fail. And if starting up a new venture during a global pandemic wasn’t hard enough, young businesspeople also feel their age is yet another obstacle they need to overcome in order to be successful. That’s according to a survey of more than 25,000 respondents (age 18–40) across 35 countries commissioned by Herbalife Nutrition and conducted by OnePoll, which found that 62% of young entreprenuers in the United States fear that their age hinders them when trying to launch their own businesses. Illinoisans also feel strongly about this - over half (53%) here worry they won’t be taken seriously when starting a business because of their youth. Despite this, it appears that many view these challenges as opportunities on the path to success, rather than obstacles that can’t be overcome. When asked why, six in 10 (56%) said they’re better at adapting to new technology than other generations, and 43% said they’re more likely to have fresh, unexplored ideas. Moreover, the survey also found 28% of those who want to open a business said they’re “less afraid to fail” than other generations. However, the majority of respondents agreed that gaining valuable experience in business for a few years before starting their own would be beneficial, with Americans believing the best age to start a business is 30 years old (compared to a global average of 28). Indeed, the survey found that almost two thirds (65%) of young adults are hesitant to start a new business as they feel intimidated by their lack of experience. The average American said they believe someone should have seven years of experience before starting their own business. When it comes to industries, 34% of young Illinoisans would like to launch businesses in the clothing/apparel industry, perhaps launching their own fashion labels. In second place was starting up in the food service industry (30%), presumably on the back of a growing trend for producing sustainable foods that are less harmful to the

environment. This was followed by wellness + fitness (23%); trade (23%); professional services (21%); technology (28%); professional services (16%); and education (14%). Other interesting statistics revealed from the global survey: Seventy-four percent of respondents have dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. Of those Americans interested in entrepreneurship, “becoming my own boss” was found to be the top motivating factor (38%), followed by the ability to follow their passion (35%). More than three in 10 global respondents said they were looking to support their family (37%) or wanted more flexibility in their job (32%). 31% look toward entrepreneurship as the opportunity for a career change, while 26% were looking to supplement their income after their job hours were reduced — for many, likely a result of the ongoing pandemic. For those who have been employed previously, who are now interested in entrepreneurship, 60% said one of the reasons was because they’re tired of being told “no” by older employees and managers. The same number (60%) didn’t feel like their ideas were taken into account in previous roles. “If working with entrepreneurs over the past 41 years has taught us anything, it’s that regardless of your age, the difference between success and failure is often good business fundamentals, the willingness to learn, adapt and work hard, and a passion for your work,” said John DeSimone, president of Herbalife Nutrition. “There’s no time like the present.” Results also found that 63% believe their generation faces unique challenges when starting a business, compared to older generations. “As young entrepreneurs learn how to manage the daily rigors of starting their own business, it’s imperative to surround themselves with a supportive community including mentors and those who will continuously push them to the next level,” DeSimone added.

NEW ‘VOLTSWAGEN’ CHARGING BATTERY AT CITY VW IN HIGHLAND: The term “Voltswagen” was used in print recently as a kind of play on words when the new battery powered, German Engineered import made its debut. The VW brass were not impressed, objecting to the tongue in cheek term for their new car. City Volkswagen (formerly Highland Volkswagen) has one of the new powerhouses gracing their front showplace as pictured here getting a little ‘boost.’ All eyes are on the new batterry powered cars wondering if this is the new next thing to take over from a fuel infected car around sinde Henry Ford created one in the 1920s. This is just my opinion on this, so I can’t put words in text of the fine people who run VW around the world. By way of full disclosure, I own a 2015 VW Passat and I can honestly say it has given me worry free motoring ever since it came into my life-and I love it! Thanks VW! ***

HIP REPLACEMENT WON’T STOP THIS LOCAL: The friendly face you see at the booth at Easy Wash Car Wash in Lansing, Mr. Anthony Brown, pictured here, would not let a little thing like a hip replacement on April 5, 2021 stop him from a speedy recovery and back at work by June 4, 2021 which is where N 2 N caught up with him recently! You may have read about Anthony Brown before in this space when we wrote about his many years at his post there. He knows most of his customers by name and is a cheerful representative for the company. CALUMET CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MET SUNDAY JUNE 13, 2021: Guest speaker was Dolly Foster of Hammond who talked about butterflies in “All About Butterflies.” Dolly took us through the steps of how to raise a butterfly garden and include butterflies and caterpillars. The day also included a tribute to Flag Day. On July 11, 2021, the program will be given by new board member Fred Schrum. Fred is a member of the Peace Pipe Chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. He will give a presentation on various types of clocks and watches. On Sunday June 13, members will be polled on membership, upcoming raffle and Heritage Day Americana. Father’s Day Gifts SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

Barber College Provides New Opportunities for Southland Residents South Suburban College (SSC) is offering a new and unique program to residents of Community College District 510 – Barbering. The first cohort of students recently completed their initial semester within the Barber College, a brand new state-of-the-art, fully equipped facility on the first floor of the college’s Main Campus in South Holland. The Barbering curriculum is a 17-month credit program leading to professional certification. SSC is offering a 41-hour Barber Technician (BT) Certificate and a 60-hour Associate of Applied Science Degree in Barbering track for students seeking a college degree as a part of the program. The BT Certificate is a hands-on learning experience that leads to quick employment. Both tracks will include preparation and testing for National Barbering Written Licensing Examination, which is essential to applying for licensure in Illinois. The program is unique in more ways than its curriculum. “South Suburban College’s Barbering Program is the only active public Barber School in the state,” added Matt Beasland, Dean of Adult & Continuing Education and administrator over the Barber College. “It will provide our constituents with quick access to a career credential that can lead to family sustaining wages.” The SSC Board of Trustees approved the hiring of its first ever Barber College faculty – Bobby Mattison – last fall. Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli and the Board first announced the establishment of the program in December of 2019. SSC subsequently received full approval from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) this year as well as its licensure from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

A licensed barber and barbering instructor, Mattison was instrumental in growing and licensing a Barbering Program at Statesville Correctional Center, and most recently at Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. He also opened a private business called Legacy Barber College with a partner in Glenwood, IL, for which he was featured on ABC News. Mattison looks forward to creating new opportunities for others to become barbers and is excited about his impact through SSC. “You have to find something you love and would do for free, but find a way to get paid for it. Barbering is that for me, and I know it can be for so many others.” All books, supplies, and materials required to complete the program are included, and tuition may also be covered. The SSC Barbering program was established in part by a Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) grant the college received through the Illinois Community College Board which included funding for several new in-demand programs. The WEI project is designed to create, support and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high need areas within SSC District #510. Through expanded access, opportunity, and support services, the project is anticipated to yield impactful outcomes for individuals, families, communities, local businesses. According to BLS data, the average salary for a Barber in Illinois is $42,930, or $20.64 per hour with an increase in demand by 10.8% locally and 13% nationally over the next 10 years. In the Southland area, there are currently 286 new job openings for barbers. For more information about Barber School and the WEI programs at SSC, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2413, email workforceequity@ssc.edu or visit www.ssc.edu/wei.

If you’re a dad, you may be in line to get some nice gifts on Father’s Day. But your greatest gift may be your ability to help your children. One way of doing that is to get them started in the world of investing – and making a few investments on their behalf. Here are three possibilities: 529 plan – If you invest in a 529 education savings plan, your earnings can grow federally tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified educational expenses. (Withdrawals not used for these expenses will generally incur taxes and penalties on investment earnings.) If you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, you might receive some state tax benefits, too, depending on how your state’s tax laws apply to 529 plans. Stateby-state tax treatment may vary, so you’ll need to consult with your tax professional about your situation. Provided you stay within certain limits, you can also use a 529 plan to pay for qualified K-12 expenses and registered apprenticeship programs. And you can even use it to repay certain qualified student loans, within limits. A 529 plan can affect financial aid, but its effect is generally lower than that of other assets. And as the account owner, you have control of your 529, so, if one child decides not to go to college or pursue further education, you can switch beneficiaries. UGMA/UTMA account – When you establish a special type of custodial account known as either UGMA (Uniform Gift to Minors Act) or UTMA (Uniform Transfers to Minors Act), you are providing financial resources that can be used for education or another purpose that benefits your child, such as summer programs. One potential benefit of an UGMA or UTMA is that some of the earnings will be taxed at the child’s rate, which is likely lower than your own. Plus, UGMA/UTMA accounts typically allow a wide range of investment choices. However, once children reach the age of majority (typically 18 or 21) they gain complete access to the money and can do whatever they want with it. IRA – A child with any taxable compensation, such as money from an after-school job, is eligible to fund an IRA. You may want to open one on your child’s behalf – and you can “sweeten” the offer by matching some of their contributions. You can’t directly invest in the IRA, but you can give your child money for that purpose. Keep in mind, though, that the total amount contributed can’t exceed your child’s taxable compensation for the year. An IRA is a great introduction to the world of investing. For one thing, your child can make small contributions throughout the year, so investing in an IRA doesn’t seem burdensome. Also, since an IRA can be invested in different types of securities, your child can learn about various investment vehicles – stocks, bonds, mutual funds and so on. Plus, you can point out that, with a traditional IRA, taxes won’t be due on the earnings until your child starts taking withdrawals decades from now. (And with a Roth IRA, withdrawals are tax-free, provided certain conditions are met.) On Father’s Day, you can show your appreciation for whatever gifts you receive from your children. But by investing in their future, you can gain some longer-term contentment. Bishop Noll alumni and friends enjoy the 2019 golf outing at Innsbrook Country Club. Shown are Eric Roldan, BNI '12; Matthew Sandoval, BNI '13; Chris McCormack; David Bock; and Nick Skurka, BNI '12

Bishop Noll to host golf outing, helicopter ball drop to benefit school Registration is currently open for the Bishop Noll Institute golf outing, which will benefit student scholars. This year’s outing will take place July 19 at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville. Bishop Noll is celebrating its 100th anniversary of educating Region high schoolers in mind, body and soul. The school was founded in 1921 by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and continues to remain on the forefront of education, recently named Best Private High School in the Region by The Times readers. Tickets to the outing can be purchased online at bnigolf100.givesmart.com. Fees are $200 per golfer or $800 per foursome. Tickets include lunch, golf and cart, drinks on the course, dinners and prizes. Guests may attend dinner only for $50. A reduced fee of $100 is available for young alums, those who graduated from BNI in 2011 or later. Registration is open until July13, and sponsorships are also available. In addition to the golf outing, the day will include the Centennial Helicopter Ball Drop, also at Innsbrook Country Club. The inaugural fundraiser will benefit BNI as part of the school’s

100th year celebration. Participants can purchase a numbered golf ball for $25, or five for $100, by mailing payment and entry form to BNI. Entry forms are available to download at www.bishopnoll.org/centennialball-drop or can be picked up at BNI’s main office from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, at Innsbrook’s golf pro shop, or at The Kube Sports Complex in Hammond. They also can be requested by emailing advancement@bishopnoll.org. The balls will be dropped over the target that will include a flagstick, or pin, in the center. The 10 golf balls settling closest to the pin will win cash prizes and are eligible for a $100,000 grand prize. See full contest rules at www.bishopnoll. org/centennial-ball-drop. Sales will close at 10:30 a.m. July 19 or when the 1921st ball is sold, whichever comes first. Indiana gaming regulations prohibit the purchase of raffle tickets (or, in this case, golf balls) with a credit card. For more information on sponsorships or registration, contact Juli Sandoval at jsandoval@ bishopnoll.org or (219) 932-9058, ext. 1005.

Question: I’m in the process of purchasing a home offered for sale by owner. What questions should I ask the seller that will provide me with pertinent information about the property? Also, what questions should I ask that will give me information that most sellers don’t want buyers to know? Answer: This isn’t going to work. There are a universe of potential questions and the odds are overwhelming that you will miss one or more -- and maybe pay thousands of dollars in excess costs as a result. For instance, is the sale subject to a home inspection? Must the inspection be “satisfactory” to you? If the inspection is not satisfactory to you will you get your deposit back if the owner does not make repairs? Must the repairs be satisfactory to you? Can the seller limit repair obligations to a given dollar amount? Are you getting good, marketable and insurable title? How do you know? Please, get a Realtor before you sign anything. Question I bought a house in October. We were told the heat was electric and on the listing it says the heat is electric. After we closed and started moving in we discovered the heat is really gas. I do not like gas and am afraid of

it. What are my options, if any, in getting this resolved? Can I request they convert the gas to electric? Answer: Gas is both safe and efficient -- many people prefer it to electric heat. The real problem here is not the source of heat; rather it’s your personal preference, an error in the listing form and a failure to see the problem long before closing. This could have been avoided with a professional home inspection, a check of the furnace or a look at the utility bills. It may be that the listing broker did little more than check the wrong box on a form -- a matter that a buyer could easily detect and correct with minimal due diligence. You or your attorney can certainly speak with the sellers and their broker -- but I doubt that you’ll get a new heating and cooking system from the past owners. Indiana Ballet Theatre’s annual The average home workout dance concert KALIEDOSCOPE for Illinoisans during the returns to the stage pandemic lasts just 20 mins Indiana Ballet Theatre’s (IBT) annual modern-contemporary dance concert KALIEDOSCOPE returns to the stage Saturday, June 19th at the Hoosier Theatre in Whiting, IN. Kaliedoscope Director/IBT Associate Artistic Director said since the concert’s inception in 1999. “Contemporary dance is a diverse and dynamic form of expressive dance. Audiences return year after year to enjoy IBT’s contemporary showcase that connects movement to the human experience,” Tuohy said. This year, the concert hosts a new full-length contemporary ballet, choreographed by Lindsey Lanham, former company member and IBT guest teacher. While IBT performed their “Cinderella” ballet in May for audiences, she said Kaliediscope, exhibits another side to IBT, expressing dancer virtuosity. Tuohy said this year’s Kaliedoscope production, titled “Opal Rey Trinity,” is particularly special to IBT as it is a tribute performance to Molley Lanham, choreographed by Molley’s sister Lindsey Lanham, who is now attending law school in New York. Molley and her two sisters, Lindsey

and Lauren, danced at IBT since they were grade-schoolers. The Lanham family has since been an integral part of the IBT family. This performance celebrates and honors Molley’s life and legacy through choreography by her sister. What can audiences expect? “Opal Rey Trinity is an inspirational dance concert with dancers devoted to expressing Lindsey’s story and movement; it’s both breathtaking and beautiful,” Tuohy described. Performed by a cast of 16 from IBT Company, ranging from the organization’s preprofessional and adult professional dancers, and alumni, Kaliedoscope is a one-day only performance, offering two showtimes. Kaliedoscope is an all-ages performance and IBT Company will once again take the stage at Whiting’s historic Hoosier Theatre. Located in the heart of the city at 1335 119th Street and is one of the last vaudeville theatres in the state of Indiana. Kaliedoscope tickets for the June 19th shows at 1pm and 7pm are available online at IBTNW.ORG/EVENTS or call 219.755.4444.

We’ve all been there: finding the motivation to wake up at the crack of dawn to make that spinning class, or completing that last round of jumping jacks in your gym HIIT class while those around you are powering through. Research has shown that we push ourselves harder among others than we do when alone. The concern among many gym goers when gyms were widely closed as a result of the pandemic, was that their workout sessions would lose intensity, when they would have to rely on self-motivation. The old adage ‘strength in numbers’ appears to ring true - that is, according to a survey of 3,000 Americans by IRunFar.com, a trail running and ultrarunning info site. It was discovered that on average, Illinoisans work out at home for just 20 minutes per session – not bad, perhaps, but not great either considering the CDC recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity per week. This was above the national average of 18 mins. Men were more motivated than women, it seems, averaging 20-minute-long workout sessions as compared to women’s 14-minute-long sessions. When measured compared to other states, those ultra-fit Delawareans took the crown, working out on average for 50 minutes per session at home – well above the recommended physical activity guidelines if done three times per week. By comparison, those in nearby Maine barely moved a muscle, clocking in a meagre 6 minutes on average and not ranking close to these guidelines. More than half (57%) of people say they’re less fit now as compared to pre-pandemic times, however, a third say they have been steadily ramping up their workout intensity as restrictions ease and summer is on the way – perhaps they’re getting their bodies

Half of vaccinated Illinoisans will stay away from unvaccinated friends There are endless stigmas about vaccines and immunization, leading to many controversial debates and misconceptions on the topic. Recently, it was announced that more than half had been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Hypothetically, if you have a group of five friends or work colleagues, perhaps two or three of them may be unvaccinated according to these current statistics. MyBioSource.com, a biotechnical products distribution company, conducted a survey (3,400) to find out if this will impact our social habits, particularly in terms of coming into contact with those who choose not to be vaccinated. It was found that over half (59%) of vaccinated Illinoisans say that going forward, they will be avoiding contact with friends and colleagues who have chosen not to be vaccinated. This is compared to a national average of 48%. Across the country, this figure was found to be highest in Maryland, with 65% of Marylanders saying they will avoid mixing with non-vaccinated people once lockdowns are fully lifted. Comparatively, just 11% of respondents in more rural Idaho say they will be doing this. Vaccine Freebies: The survey also found that over a third (37%) of respondents agree with the principle of incentives – in the form of money or products – to encourage people

to get vaccinated. This follows reports of businesses offering free products to anyone who can prove they have been vaccinated; including Budweiser offering vaccinated over 21s a free round of beer and Krispy Kreme offering a free donut to anyone with POV (proof of vaccination, of course). Phoenixbased The Mint Dispensary, is even offering up free edibles to over 21s upon display of their vaccine card and a Michigan initiative, the ‘Pot for Shots’ program, offers a free pre-rolled joint to over 21s upon POV. Safety vs. social life: It was also found that 2 in 5 (40%) people who have been vaccinated would be prepared to pause friendships if they discovered some friends refused to be vaccinated. Given that people unvaccinated against the coronavirus can pose a serious health risk to those around them, especially those at high risk for severe illness, perhaps this a concern outweighs the social aspect for some. Over 1 in 3 (37%) respondents think unvaccinated people should be required to sit separately on public transport facilities, such as buses and trains. Finally, nearly half (46%) of people think public venues, such as gyms, movie theaters and concerts, should have separate opening hours for unvaccinated people, so as to reduce mixing between those who are vaccinated and those who are non-vaccinated.

into shape to enjoy more outdoor activities in the sunshine… Although, 1 in 10 (14%) say that they’re doing this more out of vanity than for health reasons. A majority (86%) on the other hand, are genuinely hoping to boost their overall health before the upcoming summer season. Interestingly, stats show that the majority of us don’t plan to renew our gym memberships once the pandemic is over, possibly because we’ve found out how much money we’re saving by working out at home – even if it’s not ideal in terms of having sufficient space. Perhaps others are looking forward to exercising outdoors in nature once the pandemic is over, and who can blame them after months of cabin fever during lockdown? Of those who’ve not been following an exercise regime during the pandemic, 1 in 3 say they will feel too self-conscious to join a gym or workout outside when restrictions are lifted. Given that many didn’t have access to workout equipment while gym facilities were closed during lockdown, it’s likely it could take a while for fitness levels to return to what they once were. Although it seems some have other priorities in mind: 68% of people say they would get more pleasure from enjoying a 6-pack of beer with friends than they would from having a 6-pack of abdominal muscles! ‘It’s not always easy to find the motivation to work out while in a global pandemic,’ says Bryon Powell from IRunFar.com. ‘However, it’s important to remember than any exercise is better than none – no matter how long or short your workout session. Everyday life can be overwhelming so if you find yourself with lack of time on some days, a quick 20-minute HIIT session before your lunch break or 30 minutes of yoga before bed can work wonders when practiced regularly.’

Practical ‘Dadvice’ for Everyday Tasks From the host of the YouTube channel that went viral, “Dad, How Do I?,” comes a book of the same title that’s part memoir, part inspiration and part DIY advice. Rob Kenney wished he had someone who could teach him the basics - how to tie a tie, jump-start a car, unclog a drain, use tools properly - as well as succeed in life. In this book, he shares his story of overcoming a difficult childhood with an absent father through the strength of faith and family, and offers words of inspiration and hope. In addition, he provides instructions for 50 practical DIY projects, illustrated with helpful line drawings, as well as the occasional dad joke. A Riveting Race Against Time “New York Times” bestselling author Linwood Barclay returns with a riveting thriller, “Find You First.” Diagnosed with a terminal illness, tech millionaire Miles Cookson begins a search for the children he’s never known. Somewhere out there, after having been a sperm donor, he has nine unknown kids who might be about to inherit both the good and the bad from him - maybe his fortune, or maybe something much worse. One by one, Cookson’s heirs are vanishing - every trace of them wiped, like they never existed at all.

Shopping for Father’s Day can be difficult. From tools to tech toys, some gifts are used over and over again, but thoughtful gifts that match your dad’s interests can make this year’s present a memorable one. If he enjoys reading, there are options that align with almost every hobby and interest, from advice for hands-on projects to thrilling mysteries and exploration of the challenges many dads face every day, and these picks can provide a reminder of you every time he sits down to read another chapter.

An Exploration of the Challenges Fathers Face Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, Craig Melvin, news anchor of NBC News’ “Today,” had a fraught relationship with his father. Lawrence Melvin was a distant, often absent parent due to his drinking as well as his job working the graveyard shift at a postal facility. A powerful, intimate exploration of fatherhood, addiction and resiliency, “Pops: Learning to Be a Son and a Father” is the story of their long journey to reconciliation and understanding, as well as an investigation of the challenges facing all dads.
