10th Annual Law Day Celebrated at South Suburban College The South Suburban College (SSC) Legal Studies department hosted the 10th annual Law Day on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. Law Day celebrates the role of law in society and cultivates a deeper understanding of the legal profession.

Attendees from five local high schools visited the College’s Main Campus, including Bremen, Oak Forest, Rich Township, T.F. South, and Tinley Park. SSC Legal Studies students from the Court Reporting, Criminal Justice, and Paralegal programs also attended the event. There were over 165 attendees in total.

The event included live Q & A sessions with Illinois Appellate Court Justices Hyman, Walker, and Johnson via Zoom. A talk by Operation Greylord undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, author, and attorney Terrance Hake was also held. Operation Greylord was one of the most important cases in the history of Cook County, uncovering corruption in the criminal justice courts system.

Mid-day featured various lunch and learn sessions including pizza and discussions with assistant state’s attorney Thomas Darman, paralegal turned attorney Schylon Lane, and Legal Studies faculty member Ian Sharping regarding cyber security. There was also a live demonstration by Illinois official court reporters.

Event attendees had the opportunity to walk through a fictitious crime scenario organized by the Illinois State Police (ISP). Students explored the mock crime scene noting evidence. They then reconvened with ISP Master Sergeant Melville who explained what a trained crime scene investigator would have found and deduced.

The festivities concluded with a Zoom session featuring litigation paralegal Tracy Oprea, and entertainment law attorney Patrice Perkins.

The New You

Bishop Noll’s first Black valedictorian excels in classroom, on stage and beyond Bishop Noll Institute has announced its first Black valedictorian in its 102-year history. Ayanna Wash, a thespian, musician and scholar at Noll, said she feels honored and proud.

“I am glad to be a part of Bishop Noll’s history and hope to be a symbol of strength and intelligence that others can look up to,” said Wash, of Hammond.

This spring, Wash had the starring role in the Drama Club’s musical, “Little Shop of Horrors.” This winter, she performed at the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida, with BNI’s marching band. In 2021, she performed with a small band ensemble at Bishop Noll’s 100th anniversary gala.

“I am very proud of becoming the president of the band and the first chair trumpet,” she said. “I am also very proud of becoming the vice president of the Drama Club and being able to participate in our many shows and events as both an actor and a member of set.”

Also a member of the Biology Club, Wash plans to major in biology at Marian University in Indianapolis to eventually pursue a career as a surgeon.

“I hope to become an example that students can do anything they put their minds to if they work hard. I hope to be someone others can look up to as a model and for hope,” she said. “When I learned I was the valedictorian, I felt extremely happy and relieved.

I was proud that all my hard work and determination had paid off.

I was very excited. I was surrounded by my friends whom I care about very much.”

Wash is a true example of what it means to be a Bishop Noll Warrior, said Lorenza Jara Pastrick, Bishop Noll principal. “Her work ethic is unmatchable and her dedication to her studies is admirable. As the first Black valedictorian, she makes me and our community proud. I think I speak for many when I say this honor is well deserved and couldn’t have gone to a better young lady!”

More than 23,500 student loan borrowers in Illinois approved for Public Service Loan Forgiveness Today, to mark Public Service Recognition Week, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) announced it has approved nearly 616,000 borrowers nationwide for approximately $42 billion in Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) since October 2021.

PSLF covers public employees—such as teachers, firefighters, and members of law enforcement, as well as those who work for a non-profit organization—in a variety of fields by forgiving the remaining federal student loan balance for those who make the required 120 qualifying monthly payments.

In fact, PSLF is making an incredible difference for public servants in Illinois: • Between October 2021 and May 2023, the Department has approved more than 23,500 borrowers in Illinois for nearly $1.6 billion in loan forgiveness under temporary changes the Biden-Harris Administration made to the PSLF Program. That’s more than $67,000 per borrower!

• While hundreds of thousands of Illinois borrowers already have benefited from PSLF, more will benefit as the program continues.

“Since Day One, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked relentlessly to fix a broken student loan system, including by making sure we fulfill the promise of Public Service Loan Forgiveness for those who have spent a decade or more serving our communities and our country,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “To date, the Biden-Harris team has kept that promise for more than 615,000 teachers, nurses, social workers, servicemembers, and other public servants by approving a combined $42 billion in student loan debt forgiveness. Live a life of love, doing what you love, loving yourself, loving others in your life, and treating strangers with love. It sounds simple, and it can be, but it requires you to be intentional and have a consistent effort to achieve it. Love should be easy. Love is a complex positive emotion that is expressed and promoted through acts of kindness, empathy, and connection with others. It involves a willingness to put the needs and well-being of others before our own, and a desire to build up people instead of tearing them down. Love is one of the Fruits of the Spirit that we should express in our lives. Top loves should be God, ourselves, and others.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV). Expressing love for God can be a deeply personal and spiritual journey. You can express that love: • Through worship, prayer, studying and engaging in regular worship and prayer with God through gratitude and praise for His presence in your life.

• Selflessly serving with acts of kindness to others, by extending the love of God to you to others in need.

• Surrendering your fears and worries, by trusting, and having faith in God in His divine plan and guidance for your life.

• Living in alignment with His teachings and principles by practicing the Fruits of the Spirit of love, kindness, forgiveness, humility, and compassion in your daily interactions with others.

Living a life of love with God, we learn to love others.

Ephesians 5:2 commands us to “Live a life of love. Love others just as Christ loved us” (ERV). It can be hard to love others when you’ve had a “bad day”, work is not going well, or there’s not enough in the bank. It’s hard to express love, kindness, and compassion when you want to judge your life against others.

Living a life of love involves consistently choosing to act in ways of kindness,

compassion, sincerity, and care toward oneself and others. Self-love is important because like the adage “If you can’t love yourself, how can you love anyone else”. We need to love ourselves despite all the flaws that we think we have. We truly judge ourselves harshly and are our worst critics.

It is essential to love ourselves to achieve overall well-being and personal growth by prioritizing our own physical, emotional, and mental health. Here are some ways to cultivate self-love: • Practice self-care. Take care of yourself.

Prioritize activities that nourish and rejuvenate you while setting boundaries to protect yourself from overexertion. Learn to say “no” sometimes to activities or relationships that may drain you and take away joy.

• Develop self-compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness, understanding, and forgiveness that we should show others.

Stop judging yourself by realizing that we all have struggles, difficulties, and failures.

Celebrate your achievements instead.

Acknowledge your accomplishments, big or small. Be pleased in your efforts and successes, while giving yourself credit for your hard work and progress.

• Surround yourself with positivity: Seek out positive influences, supportive relationships, and environments that are uplifting and inspiring. Surround yourself with love to reinforce your sense of selfworth. Challenge negative self-talk and avoid critical people. Replace negativity with positive and affirming statements.

Love is a powerful emotion that can bring joy, fulfillment, and meaning to our lives. It can be challenging at times. We can live a life of love by understanding the example of love that Christ demonstrated. Jesus showed love in many ways, including compassion, forgiveness, humility, and sacrifice. He put the needs of others before his own and lived a life of service and kindness. We too can live a life of love by intentionally showing love to others the same way. Y? Why Not! Warned Biller to Fix Its Bad Math WOODROW WILCOX On May 11, 2023, I wrote a letter to a medical biller to fix its bad math on a bill to a client from Griffith, Indiana.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical biller.

Dear Representative, Someone at your firm made a big mistake on a bill sent to our client. Please, cooperate to fix your mistake. Here is the mistake.

Your bill to our client is dated 05/12/23 and seeks a balance of $596.08 on Account Number XXXXXXXXX for services rendered 01/30/2023. The original amount of the claim was $664. Medicare approved only $67.92.

The secondary insurance company paid your firm $67.92. Our client owed you NOTHING. But your firm billed her for $596.08. All you did was subtract the $67.92 payment from the original billed amount of $664 instead of subtracting the $67.92 payment from the maximum that Medicare ruled you could charge -- $67.92. Your math is all wrong.

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA The scene of your salvation opens in a courtroom.

God sits as the presiding judge as the devil lays out evidence against you. Witness after witness is called to provide testimony that is damning — in the truest sense of the word. The man you swore at on the highway, the woman who got fired because of the rumor you spread — they all begin to reveal your true nature.

Then the exhibits are presented: your internet browsing history, the amount of hours you spent watching TV, the ways you act when no one is looking — the devil’s case against you is overwhelming.

By the end of it, you’re in tears. How could God ever rule in your favor?

But your attorney steps into the spotlight. It’s Jesus.

He does not belittle the sins you’ve committed or provide excuses for them. Instead, he looks at your sins, then at the judge, and says, “My client is guilty, but I will take the punishment for these sins.”

You and the devil are shocked. These are your sins and Jesus, the perfect son of God, is willing to bear the sentence for them? How could this be?

God raps his gavel. The verdict is guilty. The sentence?

Death.

As your savior Jesus is lead away, your tears are filled as much with joy as they are with anguish as the reality begins to set in.

God declares, “You’re free to go home.”

As you walk out of the courtroom, you wonder if there’s any greater joy than what you’re feeling.

“Wait,” says the judge.

Your heart stops. Did God change his mind?

You turn around and see God approaching you with arms open wide.

As he embraces you he says with a smile, “No child, your home is with me now.”

MIKE BUDER Many people who sell their homes with me have already experienced failure with a prior broker. They often tell me that they were frustrated with the “lack of selling” they witnessed with the agents who showed their homes. “The agents who show the home just walk through and hardly say anything about the house. Why aren’t they pushing the sale? Don’t they want to make a sale?”

Sellers first need to understand the process that a 2023 buyer goes through in the selection of a home. They don’t want to be “sold”. This is not a Home-O-Matic that comes with Free Steak Knives, if you Act Now!!! This is a six-figure decision in an unreliable economy that will house their family. Homeowners that follow them around peppering them with data about the storage under the stairs, an anecdote about the wall oven and dozens of other wellmeaning tidbits are viewed as a distraction and nuisance.

Buyer agents are not talkative because they know their buyer clients. They know the buyers are studying it. They are soaking it in. They are seeing if it fits them. They are accessing how they look in it and that’s hard to do with someone in your space the whole

time. If it feels like home, they’ll gladly take the data sheet with all the improvements the owner wanted to ram down their throat in the first 15 seconds they walked in. If it doesn’t feel like home, no list will matter because it’s off their list.

Homeowners are wise not to be present for showings. Let the buyer’s agent do their job. If you are an owner and you have a pitch you feel works for the house, write it up and print it for the buyer to take with them so they can reference it quietly, at their own pace, and without pressure on their own terms. By ANDREW ADAMS Capitol News Illinois aadams@capitolnewsillinois.com SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers are considering creating a grant program that would send state dollars to grocers in Illinois communities that have few options for buying food.

Senate Bill 850 would direct the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, or DCEO, to establish the “Grocery Initiative,” a program that would study “food deserts” in Illinois and provide grants to new or existing grocery stores in these areas. The grants would be available to grocery stores that are organized as independently owned for-profits, co-ops and nonprofit organizations as well as grocery stores owned by units of local government.

“It’s incredibly expensive to run a grocery store,” bill sponsor Rep. Mary Beth Canty, D-Arlington Heights, said in an interview. “It takes a lot of product and your margins are very thin.”

The initiative was first introduced in Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which called for $20 million to fund the program. Canty, who is sponsoring the proposal in the House, said she will continue to work on it in the next two weeks as lawmakers craft next year’s budget.

Canty said she views the proposal as a way to interrupt violence and alleviate some of the root causes of crime.

“Without food security, people are desperate and desperate people do desperate things,” Canty said.

The bill defines food deserts as low-income communities that are at least a half-mile from a grocery store in urban areas and at least 10 miles from a grocery store in rural areas.

Approximately 3.3 million people – about one in four Illinois residents – live in a food desert, according to a 2021 Illinois Department of Public Health report that used data from the United States Department of Agriculture. This dataset was first published in 2019 and was last updated in 2021.

The USDA also measures food access in communities using other thresholds. One-mile and 20-mile thresholds would still include 1.1 million Illinoisans – about 9 percent of the state’s population, according to that IDPH report.

Tito Quiñones, who works on legislative affairs for the DCEO, spoke to lawmakers at a hearing on the bill last week.

“This is a statewide issue and I think it connects different parts of the state over this issue of food insecurity,” Quiñones said.

According to a weekly survey from the U.S. Census Bureau that has tracked things like food insecurity since the start of the pandemic, about 9.4 percent of households in Illinois reported “sometimes” or “often” not having enough food to eat over a seven-day period early last month.

This figure is higher for people of color.

About 14.4 percent of Hispanic and Latino households reported that level of food insecurity during the same period. About 18.5 percent of respondents who reported two or more races on the survey indicated they also struggled. For white households, the figure was 8 percent.

The proposal comes on the heels of the highprofile closings of four Walmart locations on Chicago’s South and West Sides as well as the controversial closing of a Whole Foods on the city’s South Side.

In more rural areas, when a grocery store closes, a store like Dollar General or Family Dollar might be a town’s only source of food other than a gas station. Dollar General reports they have more than 19,000 stores in 47 states.

The bill would require any grant recipients to carry a “substantial variety of perishable foods” including things like meat and fresh produce, items not typically carried by dollar stores or convenience stores.

Sean Park, a program manager at the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, spoke to lawmakers about the proposal at a House Revenue Committee hearing last week.

“If there was money to be made from the convenience stores doing this, they would already be doing it,” Park said, referring to selling meat and produce. “What we’re proposing in the bill is support for new models.”

Those new models might not need to rely as heavily on a profit motive for operating the grocery store. The bill would grant DCEO the authority to limit the kinds of grocers that would be eligible based on factors like annual revenue or physical size.

After the town of Winchester in west central Illinois lost its local IGA grocery store, residents had to travel around 20 miles to get groceries.

In early 2017, civic leaders in the community began considering how to develop a grocery store for the town. The project eventually became Great Scott! Community Market.

“The need presented itself,” Thomas Coonrod, the general manager of the store, said in an interview. “The question became how to do it, the model, size, location.”

Planners settled on a co-op model, meaning the store is owned by its members, who bought into it as it was being developed, giving the store seed capital to get off the ground. Coonrod also said that the store has given local growers a place to sell their produce.

Other new models include municipally owned grocers. Over the past few years, this has been tried in a few communities in states such as Kansas and Florida. A municipally owned grocery store is under consideration in Cutler, a community of several hundred people in southern Illinois’ Perry County.

Some Republicans said they want to make sure the bill wouldn’t require any municipalities to use this model. In committee and in a followup interview, Canty clarified that no such requirement exists.

Rep. Martin McLaughlin, R-Barrington Hills, told his colleagues on the revenue committee that he was uncomfortable with the level of government intervention in the proposed program.

“This is unbelievable to me that we are going to suddenly be the financiers of the private capital market, which should be driving the decision,” McLaughlin said.

He later cited this concern as a reason that he couldn’t support the bill, comparing the idea to socialist nations that formerly made up the Soviet Union The Illinois Fuel & Retail Association, a lobbying group representing convenience stores, is opposed to the bill as well, although that’s because those stores – which include gas station mini marts –would be excluded from grant eligibility under the legislation as currently written.

“Our ask is simple: to let convenience stores at least apply for some of this funding,” IFRA CEO Josh Sharp told lawmakers.

The state has been considering what to do about food deserts for several years. In 2017, the state began tracking the prevalence and locations of food deserts. Last year, Pritzker signed a bill that allowed DCEO and the Department of Agriculture to begin the process of creating a “Healthy Food Development Program,” which would offer financial assistance to grocery stores.

Measure banning vaping indoors in public places clears General Assembly

By NIKA SCHOOONOVER Capitol News Illinois nschoonover@capitolnewsillinois.com SPRINGFIELD – A measure that would ban the use of electronic cigarettes inside of public buildings in Illinois needs only a signature from Gov. JB Pritzker to become law after it received final approval from lawmakers this week.

House Bill 1540 passed the Senate on a 42-11 vote this week after passing the House 85-22 in March, clearing both chambers with bipartisan support.

The measure expands the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which bans smoking in public buildings and within 15 feet of a building’s entrance, to include e-cigarettes and vapes.

“We have more and more young people who vape instead of using combustible cigarettes, so I thought it was critical for the health of our whole state that we include e-cigarettes in the Smoke Free Illinois Act,” Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat from Lake Forest and sponsor on the bill, said in an interview.

The bill also permits retail tobacco stores that derive at least 80 percent of their gross revenue from the sale of tobacco or electronic cigarettes and equipment to allow indoor smoking of electronic cigarettes on their premises.

According to the American Heart Association,

e-cigarettes were the most commonly used form of tobacco in 2019. Additionally, the number of students exposed to secondhand smoke as a result of vaping has risen in recent years, with 1 in 3 students being exposed.

“Just because (e-cigarettes) aren’t typical cigarettes does not mean that their secondhand smoke effects are any less impactful and harmful to the general public,” Ally Lopshire, government relations director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, said in an interview.

“There’s absolutely no reason a person — from a pregnant woman to a young child — should be exposed to harmful e-cigarette products while in public,” Morrison said in a statement. “It’s about time we set a clear standard that protects non-smokers and further de-normalizes tobacco use.”

SMITSFH.com. Michael was born on April 8, 1928 in Lodz, Poland to Bronislaw and Helena Slawinski. As a young man Michael enjoyed swimming and kayaking near his family’s summer home in Sheratz, Poland.

In 1939 after the German army invaded Poland Michael went to live with his older brother in Krakow, Poland. In 1943 at the age of 15 Michael was forcibly conscripted by the German Army for a supply unit in Russia. After escaping from the German supply unit in 1944 he joined the

Polish underground army and fought bravely in the Battle of Warsaw. He was taken prisoner and during the transportation by train to the POW camp he and many of his fellow soldiers escaped when the train was attacked by a British spitfire plane. Michael and his fellow soldiers made their way to Yugoslavia where they joined the Yugoslavian partisan army.

He fought until the end of World War II in Europe in May 1945. Michael was awarded a medal and commendation as a Veteran of World War II for his service and participation in the Battle of Warsaw at the 50th anniversary in 1994 by the Polish Government.

After the war Michael immigrated to England where he completed his High School Education and worked in a Dental office as a Technician.

During his time in England Michael learned how to ballroom dance which became a lifetime passion for him. He then joined the Merchant Marines where he worked for several years before immigrating to the United States. During his time with the Merchant Marines Michael became a champion Ping-Pong player winning several Marine tournaments.

In 1952 he immigrated United States after congress allowed Polish veterans to come to the United States.

Michael married Florence Piarowski on February 4, 1954 where they resided in Chicago for 20 years before moving to Dyer, Indiana where Michael has been a resident since 1974. While working several jobs Michael attended Roosevelt trade school in Chicago, Illinois and became a diesel mechanic.

He joined the IAMAW Mechanics Union Local 701 in Chicago on October 1, 1958 where he was a member in good standing until his death. Michael was a shop steward and worked for improved pension and health benefits, and improved safety conditions.

He was a diesel mechanic for 35 years including with Eastern Express for 15 years and Hertz Penske for 15 years before retiring in 1991. Michael was also an inventor and received a patent from the U.S Government at the age of 87 for his bidet invention.

He loved to write and tell stories to his family. He enjoyed dancing, ping-pong and golf. He will be sorely missed by all his family who loved him dearly. We thank him for his service and being a great Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather.

I am grateful for all of our teachers who show up each and every day with the sole commitment to inspire and provide students with life-long skills.

Your dedication and commitment to guiding our next generation through their educational journey and into thriving career paths is heroic.

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra concludes their 2022-2023 season with MOVIE MAGIC! Munster, IN –Join the Northwest Indiana Symphony and conductor Kirk Muspratt as they conclude their 2022-2023 season with “Movie Magic,” with 2 performances, Thursday, June 8; and Friday, June 9 all at 7:30 pm at the Auditorium at Living Hope Church. The concert will also feature violinist Esme Arias-Kim. “Esme is such a phenomenal talent, and we can’t wait to share her with you,” said Maestro Muspratt. “So much great movie and entertainment music!”

The concert will include music from Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Raging Bull, Maltese Falcon, James Bond, Avengers: Endgame, and more!

Violinst Esme Arias-Kim, 17, winner of the 2023 Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition, will perform the third movement from Korngold’s swashbuckling and virtuoso Hollywood Concerto.

Four ways to use cash wisely SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN There has been a lot of talk about a “cashless” society, but it’s not here yet. In fact, cash can still be a valuable element of your overall financial picture – if you employ it wisely. But how?

Consider these four key uses of cash: • Everyday spending – Of course, you need sufficient cash on hand to pay for your cost of living – mortgage, debt payments, utilities, groceries, etc. You’ll likely rely on your savings or checking accounts to pay for these needs.

• Unexpected expenses and emergencies – It’s never a bad idea to establish a monthly budget. But, as you know, life is unpredictable – and sometimes you may encounter “budget-busting” expenses, such as a major home repair or a large medical bill. If you haven’t planned for these costs, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments, such as your IRA and 401(k), which can result in taxes, penalties and less money for your retirement. A better alternative is to prepare in advance by building an emergency fund containing up to six months’ worth of living expenses in cash, or at least in a highly liquid account, held separately from your regular checking or savings account so you won’t inadvertently spend the money.

• Short-term savings goal – When you are investing for a long-term goal – especially retirement – you will likely need to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks and stock-based mutual funds. The value of these investments will fluctuate, so, if it’s possible, you’ll want to avoid selling them when their price is down – which may make them unsuitable for short-term goals. But if you’re aiming for a goal that you want to achieve in a year or so – a wedding, a long vacation, and so on – you’ll want to be sure a specific amount

of money is there for you when you need it. Consequently, you’ll want to put away cash for this type of goal, possibly in a short-term savings or investment vehicle that might pay somewhat higher interest than a regular checking/savings account.

• Source of investment – In regard to your longer-term investment strategy, cash can play two important roles. First, it can serve as its own asset class, alongside other classes, such as stocks and fixedincome vehicles. Unlike these other classes – especially stocks and stock-based mutual funds – cash won’t fluctuate in value, so it can potentially help lessen the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. And second, having the cash available in your portfolio gives you the opportunity to quickly take advantage of other investment opportunities that may occur. And you may be able to use your existing investments to help replenish the cash in your portfolio.

For example, if you choose to take stock dividends in cash, these dividends can be “swept” into your brokerage account and held there until you’re ready to invest them. (However, depending on your comprehensive financial strategy, it may be a good move to simply reinvest the dividends into the same stocks or stock funds.) Keep in mind that you won’t want your investment accounts to contain too much cash, as its purchasing power can erode due to inflation.

By managing your cash efficiently, and putting it to work in different ways, you can gain some key benefits – and you’ll help yourself to keep moving toward your shortand long-term goals.
