At the March on Washington in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. referred to the struggle for civil rights as “The Fierce Urgency of Now!” Louis Gomez, a social scientist, professor of education and information studies at UCLA, and dedicated to educational improvement, has applied the phrase to today’s teachers, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. He notes that school systems need to stop dithering and wasting time and get down to the business of eradicating unacceptable educational problems with all deliberate speed. In short, “Get to it now!” “Produce results!” “We have no more time to waste!” The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a drastic and unexpected worldwide disruption for educational systems; Thornton Township High School District 205 (TTHS) is not an exception. The dreadful virus abruptly interrupted both the 2019-2020 and 20202021 school years. However, with creativity, adaptability, and dedication, district leaders, building administrators, staff, families, and students have positioned each member of the learning community to rise to the challenge and sustain forward momentum that supports student learning! Moreover, TTHS recognized and implemented a Remote/Distance Learning process with virtual educational resources to transition into a responsive learning environment that addresses the mediation parameters for surviving the pandemic. As we continue to navigate the current school year, students and families will be engaged in a rigorous e-Learning curriculum approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. The Purpose of the FACE Summit On Saturday, March 27, 2021, Thornton Township High School District will present the 4th Annual Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Summit. As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, safety remains the district’s primary concern for staff, students, families, and the entire learning community. Therefore, the Summit will be delivered virtually with access from wherever you have access to the internet or streaming services. This year, we hope to have the highest attendance ever! Engage, Motivate, and Educate are the core pillars of this year’s Summit. We will highlight all the great accomplishments implemented during this challenging school year. In addition, we will provide innovative and unique professional learning opportunities for parents and/or guardians. We also use this event to promote an increase in engagement and participation by parents/guardians, students, staff, and community members.
Furthermore, the FACE Summit gives the district the opportunity to illuminate essential and innovative supplemental services leveraged with various funding resources (i.e., Title I, IDEA, IL-EMPOWER, etc.) to effectively reach all students within the TTHS learning community. Several districtwide accomplishments approved by our School Board this school year include, but are not limited to: • 4,500+ chromebooks for students – one-to-one capacity during Distance/ Remote Learning • Laptops for Building Administrators • T-Mobile Hotspot for student connectivity • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 • Supplemental Services for Distance/ Remote Learning • Continuous Virtual Professional Learning Opportunities for all staff (summer & fall) • Google and Microsoft Applications Workshops • Extensive online trainings and instructional research-evidenced supplemental programs in various core areas were purchased to enhance Distance/Remote Learning • Additional Truancy Officers assigned to all schools • Exploration of more innovative parental engagement workshops and presentations • Ongoing virtual professional development with principals, building administrators, various committees, and district administrators. Attending the 4th Annual FACE Summit is important for all stakeholders in District 205. Participation will provide insight and communications to keep us Engaged, Motivated, and Educated in how to best deliver highquality programming that produces major gains in student achievement and prepares all students for success in college, careers, and service in our community and global society. Prepare for Cold Weather With much colder weather across the state in the forecast, Indiana American Water is urging customers to act now to secure homes and businesses against freezing pipes. “With much of the state in the deep freeze over the next week, we are encouraging customers to act now to protect their plumbing system against the extreme cold,” said Indiana American Water President Matt Prine. “Failing to protect your plumbing from cold temperatures can be disruptive and very costly. When ice expands inside pipes, it can crack and burst them, leaving homeowners with a costly plumbing bill, and thousands of dollars in water damage.” Luckily, these problems are preventable by evaluating areas of vulnerability and taking certain precautions. Implementing the following winterization tips now can help avoid headaches later: Search your house for uninsulated pipes, especially in unheated areas. Consider wrapping pipes with foam insulation or electric heating tape but follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid a fire hazard. Check to make sure your garage door and crawl space doors/vents are closed. Leave cabinet doors open in kitchen and bathroom areas to allow warm air to circulate and consider letting a faucet drip to keep water moving through the pipes. If you have young children, relocate any chemicals of cleaners that may have otherwise been out of reach behind the cabinet doors. Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations with caulking, especially where
cable TV or phone lines enter the house, to keep cold air away from pipes. Make certain the water to your hose bibs is shut off inside your house (via a turnoff valve), the lines are drained, and the hose is disconnected from the spigot. Drain and shut off entirely the water to any unoccupied residence such as a summer or vacation home. A loss of power during a winter storm could cause pipes to freeze. If you intend to leave a property entirely without heat, be sure to drain all water to prevent the possibility of frozen pipes. Set the thermostat at no lower than 55 degrees if you’re going out of town. Although you may be able to get away with a lower temperature, this setting is generally considered to be safe for pipes. Make sure you know where your main water shut-off valve is in case you need to shut your water off it in an emergency. Consider wrapping your water heater in an insulation blanket. While not really at danger for freezing, this can lower your heating bills. Indiana American Water is also encouraging customers to keep fire hydrants clear near their homes and businesses after snowfall accumulates. This small step can save precious time if firefighters need to access it in an emergency. Remove snow and ice within a 3-foot perimeter of the hydrant and shovel a pathway from the hydrant to the street so that firefighters can access it quickly. Additional information on preventing frozen pipes is available on online at https:// www.amwater.com/inaw/water-information/wise-water-use.

Financial Advice Column
Financial Gifts for Your Valentine SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN For many of us, the COVID-19 pandemic may be putting a hold on dinner at the charming local bistro, but the spirit of Valentine’s Day cannot be extinguished. This year, perhaps more so than in the past, you may want to make your Valentine’s Day gifts even more meaningful. So, for example, what can you give your loved ones to help them along on the road to financial security? Here are a few possibilities: Contribute (indirectly) to an IRA Virtually anyone with earned income can contribute to an IRA, which offers tax benefits and an almost unlimited array of investment options. Yet, most people never contribute the maximum amount allowable each year, which, in 2021, is $6,000, or $7,000 for those 50 and older. You can’t contribute to another person’s IRA, but you can give that person the money for that purpose. However, an individual can’t contribute more to an IRA than he or she earned during that year. So, if you were to give someone $1,000 to be placed in an IRA, that individual must have at least $1,000 in earnings. Be aware, though, that the recipient can use the money for any purpose. Give shares of stock You probably are already familiar with the products your loved ones use – so why not give them shares of stock in the companies that make those goods or services? Most people enjoy being “owners” of businesses whose products they use. Furthermore, owning stocks for the long term can be a valuable component of anyone’s financial strategy. If you are unsure of how to give stocks, you may want to consult with a financial professional. Stay protected If your valentine also happens to be your spouse, you can give a gift of tremendous value by simply working to protect what you have. For example, if something happened to you, would your spouse be able to maintain the household, educate children, pay the mortgage and so on? A financial professional can help you find the protection you need, as well as suggest ways to defend yourself against the devasting costs of long-term care. A private room in a nursing home can cost $100,000 or more each year, according to the insurance company Genworth, and Medicare typically pays few of these expenses, so you’ll want to be prepared. Create (or revise) your estate plans It doesn’t sound very romantic but making sure your estate plans are in order is one of the best gifts you can give to all your loved ones. If you haven’t created your plan yet, contact an attorney who specializes in estate planning. You may also want to involve your tax and financial advisors. And if it’s been a while since you looked at your existing plan, take the time to review it – this is especially important if you’ve had changes in your family situation. On Valentine’s Day, the chocolate hearts and flowers are certainly always appreciated. But financial gifts can help you make a truly lasting impact on your loved ones’ lives. MARIAN AND CATHY CARUSO AT SCHOOPS IN MUNSTER: Two friends from our East Side roots, met by chance last week at the Munster Schoops on Ridge Road. My husband Larry had a taste for their Schoops double burger. I ordered take out. It was a Wednesday, so I ordered their wonderful vegetable soup (a bowl is a meal!) So, who were sitting in a booth but Marian and Cathy Caruso? We had a brief but wonderful reunion. The Caruso’s and I met years ago when I worked for Dr. Romeo Pallotto in South Chicago and they were patients. I found out that Marian’s husband (and Cathy’s Dad) Bob, is doing well after a hospital procedure, so the New Year is looking good for the Caruso family. You meet the nicest people at Schoops! ***
CAPTAIN FRANK MARTIN OF CALUMET CITY MARINE AND FRIEND ON A COLD WINTER’S DAY: It’s a bit too cold outside for Frank of Calumet City and wife/partner Denise to indulge in their passion for all things water craft, so they must stay inside on these snowy weekends. Denise is a gourmet cook and indulged Frank for many months while they both took to the Lake Michigan waterfront to walk off the pounds. Both look fabulous now thanks to Denise’ slim but sensational meals! Can’t wait to see the newest in their 2021 Thunder Jet lineup of fabulous boats. Denise is also the newest board member of the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce. ***

Bishop Noll Institute Unveils School’s Patron Saint For her connection to Bishop Noll Institute and for her lifetime devotion to others, Saint Maria Katharina Kasper was announced as the school’s patron saint during its Catholic Schools Week Mass on Feb. 3. The Most Rev. Robert J. McClory, bishop of the Diocese of Gary, celebrated an all-school Mass with select Bishop Noll students and staff, along with principals from local Diocesan elementary schools, in attendance. The Mass was also livestreamed to all Bishop Noll students and Diocesan elementary students who could not attend the traditional way due to health and safety guidelines. Bishop McClory introduced the dedication ceremony for the school’s new saint by saying “saints cheer us on, they are with us and inspire us.” Bishop Noll junior Abigail Wojtaszek and Bishop Noll sophomore Sophia Mendez, BNI representatives on the Diocesan Youth Council and members of the school’s Campus Ministry group, spoke at the podium about how the project began this fall when they wondered why Bishop Noll did not have a patron saint. “This is something special and momentous for our centennial year,” Wojtasek said. “It took us awhile to get the idea into action - a lot of emailing - but we’re glad it could all be unveiled during Catholic Schools Week.” Saint Katharina was the foundress of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, the same order that founded Catholic Central High School, now known as Bishop Noll Institute, in 1921. She was born in 1820 in Dernbach, an area that is now in western Germany. She felt the call to her vocation as a child. Upon entering the sisterhood, Katharina built her own house in Dernbach, which eventually became the congregation of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. By 1868, the order had spread across Europe and landed in the United States. By the time of Katharina’s death in 1898, the Poor Handmaids had 193 houses around the world, with the U.S. Motherhouse in Donaldson, Ind. Blessed Maria Katharina Kasper was canonized a saint at the Vatican on Oct. 14, 2018. Her feast day is celebrated Feb. 1. “Besides her ties to BNI, Saint Katharina was selfless and devoted her life to helping the poor,” Wojtaszek said. Bishop Noll is rooted in those same values, which makes it obvious why Saint Katharina was chosen. “Schools and parishes have patron saints to provide both guidance and a sense of identity,” Wojtaszek said. “It’s our goal that Saint Katharina will be ingrained into every spiritual event we do. We would like her to be invoked during prayer, present at our Masses, and pictured in places in the building. Everything that our feeder schools do for their patron saints, we would like to do for her.” Wojtaszek added that a patron saint serves as a spiritual role model and somebody who will pray for students. Saint Katharina was also chosen for her personal qualities demonstrated throughout her life.
Bishop Noll Institute hosts entrance exam Feb. 20 Bishop Noll Institute will host its next entrance exam for prospective students at 8 a.m. Feb. 20 at the school, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond. This is the first step in the admissions process for all 8th graders who have not taken the entrance exam yet and are interested in attending Bishop Noll. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, seats for this exam are limited. Parents MUST pre-register their child for the exam by downloading and completing Section A of the Transcript and Behavioral Report request form at bishopnoll.org or by contacting Mr. Stur, Director of Admissions, at jstur@bishopnoll.org. The deadline to register for the entrance exam is Wednesday, Feb. 17. Walk-ins on the day of the exam will not be accepted. Please email Bishop Noll’s director of admissions, Jeff Stur, at jstur@bishopnoll.org or call (219) 932-9058 with any questions prior to the exam. Now in its 100th school year, Bishop Noll consistently receives high rankings from the Indiana Department of Education, including the highest graduation rate (99%) of any high school in Lake County over the past six years. In addition, Noll’s Class of 2020 received $8.7 million in college scholarship offers. Noll is part of the Diocese of Gary, offering a discount to Diocesan families, and participates in the Indiana School Choice program.
“My favorite quality Saint Katharina demonstrated was her perseverance,” Wojtaszek stated. “There were no orders in Germany, so she founded her own. That determination is something I admire.” Dr. Michele Dvorak, PHJC, attended the Feb. 3 Mass as a representative of the congregation of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Sister Dvorak, a past Bishop Noll board member, a member of Bishop Noll’s Centennial Steering Committee and currently president of Ancilla College, spoke about how Saint Katharina felt compelled to help others even as a child. “We are delighted and honored that Saint Katharina will be present here in a special way at Bishop Noll. She had a real sensitivity to how much she had and how much she was blessed in her life and how others might not have that same opportunity.” Sister Dvorak presented gifts from the Poor Handmaids to the Bishop Noll community. The items representing Saint Katharina including baskets of pears and bread similar to those given out by Saint Katharina as a child. Attendees also received a Saint Katharina medallion, framed artwork and a biography of her. In the future, Bishop Noll’s Campus Ministry plans to incorporate the school’s new patron saint into centennial events, school Masses and functions.
Junior Abigail Wojtaszek and sophomore Sophia Mendez, BNI representatives for Diocesan Youth Council and members of the school’s Campus Ministry group, unveil an idol of Bishop Noll’s new patron saint, Saint Katharina Kasper. Interestingly, when Catholic Central first opened, the Poor Handmaids made St. Catherine of Alexandria the girls’ patron saint, and St. Thomas Aquinas as the boys’ patron saint. Following the Poor Handmaids’ departure from CCHS in 1933 and over additional time,
however, the acknowledgement of any patron saint at Bishop Noll eventually disappeared. Additionally, St. Catherine of Alexandria’s feast actually was pulled in 1969 from the General Roman Calendar, though in 2002 it was restored as an optional memorial.

BCI to host Exploring the Hidden Power of Racism in the Workplace The Business & Career Institute (BCI) of South Suburban College presents a virtual workshop entitled Racism Anonymous: Exploring the Hidden Power of Racism in the Workplace on Thursday, February 25th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. In this engaging 3-hour introductory workshop, participants will explore the internal and external influences that shape our personal and racial identities. The webinar will examine racism and how those mostly invisible forces elicit structural advantages for some, but also create many harmful impacts on our society and those living within it. Facilitator AnDrea Larkin Hendrix will primarily address four crucial questions that will include: • What is racism really and how does it affect everyone? • How has racism contributed to the shaping of your identity? • How does racism show up as a power system in our culture and at work? • What do I need to know in order to fight racism on the job? This introductory workshop demonstrates that productive conversations about race are possible and that there is an effective methodology for facilitating them. The workshop may serve as a starting point for an organizational journey toward becoming an anti-racist, multicultural organization. About the facilitator: Ms. Hendrix is an educator who loves to harness critical thinking and healthy debate to inspire learning.
She has taught at the college and university levels for 25 years. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications and in History, and a Master of Education degree in Instructional Technology specializing in HR training and development. AnDrea uses her Ph.D. studies in Rhetoric to examine how people use symbols and messages to create knowledge. Who should attend? • Business owners, administrators, C-suite executives • Supervisors, managers, team leaders • Human resources professionals • Employees • Anyone aligned with the fight against racism There are 3.0 PDCs available for SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP and HRCI certification holders. Certificates of completion will be available upon request. This virtual workshop is sponsored in part by Providence Bank, the South Holland Business Association and the South Suburban Cook HR Association. The cost to attend is just $35 per person or $30 per person if three or more from the same company attend. To register, please call (708) 225-6055 or email bci@ssc.edu. Zoom link will be provided after receipt of payment. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED BY 12 NOON ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD. For other questions, please email aglumac@ssc.edu.

“Victoria Loeb–Paintings & Drawings” coming to SSC’s Thiel Gallery The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present an exhibition entitled “Victoria Loeb–Paintings & Drawings” on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery from February 22 – March 18. Mystery intrigues Loeb and is always present in her work. In her paintings, she tries to focus on what is suggested instead of interpreting the most evident, what appears to be the subject. Loeb wishes to emphasize the experience between the Artwork and the Observer. As in Literature, one must give in to the game that the work proposes. To look at it not intellectually, but with innocent eyes, since it is not a rational experience, but a sensitive and emotional one. Victoria Loeb was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1992 she met Argentine Artist Alicia Maffei, her first mentor in the arts, and worked as her Drawing Assistant from 1996 to 1999. She was accepted at the Fine
Arts Institute Prilidiano Pueyrredon, receiving a Master’s Degree in Drawing. She has studied under Argentine Artist Miguel Ángel Bengochea, and later attended the studio of Contemporary Artist Eduardo Médici. Her artworks are exhibited in private and public collections in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Germany, and United States. She moved to Chicago in 2003. Loeb now primarily shows her work and teaches in the Chicago area, and for the last five years has established a studio in Evanston, Illinois. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the fourth floor and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. For more information, please email jtassin@ssc.edu or call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2316.

MIKE BUDER I’ve never met anyone who likes doing IT…IT is not difficult. But IT is messy…IT is not expensive. But IT is time consuming…home sellers hate doing IT. Home buyers hate IT even more…a few serious home sellers will do IT – but most will not (and then wonder why their house isn’t selling)…home buyers will typically choose a house where IT doesn’t have to be done…what is IT? Care to guess? IT is a dreaded home improvement project hated by most...do you know what IT is? “IT” is removing wallpaper. If you’re interested in making your home irresistible to buyers and you have dated wallpaper, then you should really do IT whether you like IT or not. Today’s choosy homebuyers prefer a home that is move-in ready and they tend to bypass homes that require updates. It is very difficult to live with someone else’s old dated wallpaper selection, so it will be well worth the time and effort spend removing it. I know you don’t want to, but remember, your buyers won’t want to either. Some sellers may prefer
to hire a professional to remove the old wallpaper and paint the walls. However, removing wallpaper is one of those inexpensive projects that many homeowners can take on themselves. Some wallpaper can be stripped dry. Others require a removal solution. If there is going to be any damage to the wall, it will come from the way the wallpaper was initially installed. It is not just that it is work to do, but it will take your time and physical effort. Stripping, scraping, patching, cleaning, and painting – all “ing” words that sound like a lot of effort. But it’s going to be worth it when buyers come into your house with their own “ing” word as in BUYING! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. CLIENT SHOWED OLD INSURANCE CARD
Heart Smart
WOODROW WILCOX
On February 4, 2021, I finally learned why our client was being billed. The client is from Griffith and is 88 years old. Since last October, I have been helping the client to resolve a medical bill for $322.36. It took that long because the medical firm billing her did not disclose the correct address on the bill. I had to research and track down the correct address and the correct person to contact. Today, in a phone call with the person in charge of billing, I discovered what caused our client’s medical bill problem. She got the medical service on 3/26/2020. She switched coverage from one Medicare supplement insurance company to another on 02/01/2020. When she received the medical service, she gave the medical firm a copy of her old and cancelled policy. Medicare is slow in updating its records and it sent the claims information to the old insurance company, too. So, the correct insurance company never got the claim to pay it. I am now in the process of getting the
correct claim information to the correct insurance company. The firm sending the bill to our client is cooperating. I am working to get the claim information to the correct insurance company in two different ways so that the matter is finally resolved for our client. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance company is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients in such medical bill problems that could cost our clients money. If your insurance agent or agency does not help clients like this, why not switch to our agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by correcting medical bill problems. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through various book sellers.
RICHARD ZEKVELD February is Black History Month. I kicked back in my recliner as my wife Nancy read my children the life story of Sojourner Truth, a remarkable woman born in slavery who became a fearless proclaimer of truth, justice, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Sojourner’s story points to the larger story of black America: a people formed through the horrific history of kidnapping, oppression and suffering, yet who encountered the God of their oppressors as their God in Christ; the God of Scripture who heard their cries for both forgiveness and freedom. They identified with the ancient Hebrews, enslaved in Egypt. This faith in God, forged in the fires of suffering, has produced remarkable stories of resilience, strength, grace, love, overcoming power and triumph throughout black history. Stories that remind us of the Faith Hall of Fame in Hebrews 11. Sometimes I hear echoes and catch
glimpses of this faith-legacy from AfricanAmericans in my own life. And I marvel at the sovereign grace of God. Maybe that’s why I love the last stanza of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” so much. It is a prayer that voices this faith-legacy with power. It rises from a particular people and their story. Yet it is also a model prayer for all Christians. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way, Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.

Remote Workers: Out Of Sight Could Mean Out Of Job Although debate continues about whether the business world will return to normal even after most people have the COVID-19 vaccine, the expectation is that many companies will soon call employees back to the office. Some workers may still get to work parttime from home, and some businesses will make remote work permanent. But tension between owners and workers is building as it becomes evident many employees are resistant to giving up working from home. In a survey, 65% said they want to work remotely full-time after the pandemic. And in a poll conducted by LiveCareer, 29% of working professionals said they would quit if they couldn’t continue working remotely. But those who push back against ownership’s preference to return to the office might paint themselves into a corner, especially if they aren’t in a position to quit, says Rod Robertson, Managing Partner of Briggs Capital (www.briggscapital.com), international entrepreneur, and author of Winning at Entrepreneurship: Insider’s Tips on Buying, Building, and Selling Your Own Business. “The expected stimulus money will dissipate by the third quarter and as companies continue to struggle, the cuts will begin,” Robertson says. “Once we reach herd immunity, companies will be deciding whether it makes sense to keep expensive office space. “Corporate gravity will begin to pull key workers back to the office, and there will be resistance from employees. And those companies that do choose to go remote at least part of the time may still downsize. The bottom line for workers is, if they want to work remotely, they would be wise to take the extra steps to ensure they stand out.”
Robertson says employees who continue to work mostly from home should do these things to keep their performance and communication levels high: Show up. Even if a company allows employees to work from home permanently, Robertson says they would be wise to go to the office at least one day each week. “Out of sight might also mean out of mind, or out of job, when it’s time to trim the roster,” he says. “Working from a distance all the time is going to lower your skill level, your engagement, and your productivity. Employees need to make the time to have facetime in the office and stay in the groove with ownership and management. You can’t do that as well at home relying on technology.” Show the human touch. “When we achieve herd immunity, face-to-face meetings with co-workers, managers and clients should be 20 to 25% of someone’s portfolio of time,” Robertson says. “Zoom meetings are a pain because you have to set them up. Remote employees should prioritize live voice communication with colleagues, managers, and clients in order to stay in the game. Picking up the phone to talk with someone keeps the relationship alive and brings more clarity than constantly texting or emailing.” Push your boss to measure you quantitatively. “Woe to the remote employees who believe they are not under increasing scrutiny – downsizing is on the way,” Robertson says. “The good employees working at home will have more reporting mechanisms in place. Show your boss your genuine enthusiasm by being proactive and coming up with more measurables for your performance.” Do extracurricular work. “The question
is, how can you be front-and-center with the boss?” Robertson says. “One way is to do extracurricular work by bringing relevant and helpful articles to ownership. Develop a thesis for those articles to show that you’re a thought leader. Executives and managers are flooded with emails, so the smart employees send a synthesis of an article that’s to the point.
“Businesses can’t afford slippage,” Robertson says. “Once there is herd immunity, the remote work issue shouldn’t be just about where employees feel they are most comfortable, but how they can be the most valuable and effective.”

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS generally means that you can save a good deal of money. Instead of paying for space you do not need or use, you can downsize and put those funds toward travel, retirement savings or extra spending money. For example, downsizing from a 2000 sq ft home to a 1000 sq ft home could cut your monthly mortgage payment by $450. Utilities by over $40/ month. Maintenance and up keep by $60/ month. According to this study by the Insurance company Amica, this savings could total over $6500 per year! Look around, all that clutter you are storing in your larger home, used to be money. The larger the home, the more we collect. Someone once said, “Live Small, so you can live BIG! E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? Question: We are considering downsizing since we are now empty nesters. Do you see this a lot with your sellers? We can see many advantages of moving into a smaller home. Answer: Yes, we see this all the time. Sometimes it is a local downsize move when family is close by, or it’s a downsize move to a warmer climate. There are advantages that come with downsizing to a smaller home. Consider these reasons for downsizing as you approach retirement or are empty nesters. When it comes to downsizing, there are several options. But downsizing especially impacts your life in a place you’ll quickly notice – your budget. Now that it’s only you, or you and a spouse, you no longer need as much room as you once did for your growing family. Why not cash in on that? Downsizing
