Cook Cty Sheriff to Conduct Halloween Roadside Safety Checks Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced that the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department will be conducting a roadside safety check in the parking lot of 3835 West Madison Street in Chicago on Saturday, October 31st from 6pm to midnight. “While Halloween may look different this year, we would like to remind the public that impaired driving is never acceptable and to plan a for safe ride home,” Sheriff Dart said.

The Sheriff’s Department encourages everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep the roads safe this Halloween: • Plan for a safe and sober way home before you go out: designate a sober driver, take public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member. • Remember, walking while impaired can be dangerous as

well. Designate a friend to walk you home. • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as you can safely do so. • If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely. There will also be a Safety Belt Enforcement Saturation patrol on October 29th and 30th from 10am – 2pm & from 6pm – 10pm.

IL Extends Moratorium on Evictions; Funds Assistance CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS Gov. Pritzker issued an executive order on October 16 extending the statewide moratorium on residential evictions for another 30 days. Pritzker first put a hold on residential evictions through an executive order on March 20, the same day he issued a statewide stay-at-home order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has reissued the order every 30 days, most recently on September 18. That order would have expired October 17. In addition to extending the eviction moratorium, Pritzker also reissued numerous other executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a moratorium on garnishments and wage deductions. “Remember, nothing really has changed in terms of the effect of COVID-19 and its effect on the economy, its effect on people’s jobs, and their ability or inability to pay rent or mortgage,” Pritzker said during a news conference Friday in Elgin. “And it’s one of the reasons why we’ve got more and more assistance for housing, as Continued on page 10

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater Don’t discard the valuable along with the useless. The proverb originated in the 1500s. Ostensibly the bathwater -- which had to be carried from the river to the house -- was used first by the men of the household, then the women, then the children, leaving it rather murky by the time the baby went in. 9

Boy Scouts Lead Ceremony to Replace Battered Flag at St. Ann School

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Thank You For Your Honesty MIKE BUDER It amazes me that there are still real estate agents out there that don’t seem to get that being completely honest with a home seller may be hard, but it’s the right thing to do. Not long ago, I heard from someone who had been trying to sell their Lansing home for a long time with no success. They asked me to take a look at the house and give my opinion on pricing it for today’s market. When I visited the home, I found several items of deferred maintenance that would keep the house from attracting the most qualified buyers, especially the FHA and VA buyers that are making up the majority of home sales in our area. There were lots of little things to do and it’s my practice to let sellers know about everything that could be improved, explain why they need to be improved, and recommend the most critical things to be addressed before a house goes on the market. Sometimes, this means that I don’t get the listing, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t address the overall condition of a home. Most owners are open to doing the things that are needed, but there are always those who have a “take it or leave it” approach about the condition of their home, even when just a little time and money can put them into a higher price range. In my opinion, the house needs to shine from the first day on the market. So I gave them a list of repairs and improvements that I thought were necessary before the house would be worth what they are hoping to sell it for. I received the following e-mail: “Mike, Thank you for your honesty. We had asked the previous 2 real estate agents if there was anything that needed to be done to help the home sell and they didn’t have anything to tell us. We appreciate your frankness…” It is our job as Realtors to promote our clients best interests, and appealing to the broadest market is definitely in their best interest. Also, if there are issues that are going to keep a house from selling quickly or at the listing price, it’s the job of the real estate agent to counsel the sellers in advance about how those issues may affect their ability to sell. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t like to be the person who tells someone that their house needs to be cleaned or decluttered or deodorized. But I also don’t want to be that agent that isn’t honest with a seller. When you are choosing a Realtor, make your selection based on more than just what price they are willing to list your home at, or the commission they are charging. Find an agent who is realistic and candid about what you need to know before putting your house on the market. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. Your comments are always welcome. Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman

their help in properly retiring the old flag and raising a new one. The ceremony took place Tuesday evening, October 20, around the flagpole between the school building and the priest’s residence. (Photos: Melanie Jongsma)

Speaking Of Seniors

They Never Filed the Claims

Assessor Elston Receives Statewide Honor Thornton Township Assessor Cassandra W. Elston recently received the statewide Township Elected Official of the Year Award. Assessor Elston is known for hosting free property tax workshops to assist Thornton Township residents in understanding the tax process and filing appeals if necessary. The Assessor’s Office maintains property records and maps for more than 100,000 real estate parcels in

WOODROW WILCOX On October 15, 2020, I wrote a letter to the director of a medical firm in northwest Indiana to let him know that the medical billing firm used to file claims with Medicare was not doing its job properly. Why would I care about that? Because bills were being sent directly to our senior citizen client instead of being filed with Medicare. As a result, big bills were going to our client wrongfully and in violation of Medicare standards. The client is from Kouts, Indiana. This does happen but not often. When it does happen, it is another sign that the Medicare system is not perfect. It was designed by people and it is run by people. The Medicare system, and the people who run it, make mistakes. Some people find a fault in the system and exploit it to rob seniors and our government. For over 17 years, I have fought mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system to protect our senior citizen clients from financial harm caused by faulty or fraudulent Medicare related bills. I have saved our clients over two million dollars. I have written over 700 articles about problems with the Medicare system. I wrote the book Solving Medicare Problem$ to teach others how to help seniors with such problems. In this case, I wrote to the leader of the firm that gave the medical services to our client and let him know that the medical billing firm that he hired was not doing its job. The errors were in violation of Medicare rules. I asked him to be fair to our client and recall the false bills, not hurt our client’s credit or hound her to pay the bad bills, and to file the claims properly with Medicare. If he does that, it will solve the problems and our client will have no bills to pay. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This agency is proud of its reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not follow this high standard of client care, why not switch to this insurance agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana.

IL Students Urged to Enter Letters About Literature Competition Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is urging students in grades 4 through 12 to enter the 2021 “Letters About Literature in Illinois”, a statewide reading and writing competition offered by the Illinois State Library’s Illinois Center for the Book. “Letters About Literature in Illinois” invites students to read a book of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the work changed their life or view of the world. Students can enter on their own or through their schools, libraries or other youth organizations. “Every year, thousands of students in Illinois enjoy participating in this inspirational competition,” said White. “Anyone who has read past letters can see how literature inspires and touches the lives of our young people. I encourage all our students to take part in the competition and I hope their participation leads to a lifetime of reading.”

There are three levels of participation: Level 1 for grades 4-6, Level 2 for grades 7-8 and Level 3 for grades 9-12. The deadline to enter the competition is Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, for all levels. One winner will be selected from each group and receive a cash award and a plaque signed by Secretary White. Teachers of the winning students will receive a certificate and a cash award for their school to purchase books for the library. Winners will be formally announced in May 2021. All runners-up will receive certificates in May prior to the end-of-the-year award ceremonies. For more information about the competition, contact Bonnie Matheis at 217558-2065 or bmatheis@ilsos.gov. Information also is available at: http://cyberdriveillinois. com/departments/library/center_for_the_ book/.

we’re announcing today.” In addition, Pritzker announced that his administration is also committing $30 million to the state’s network of welcoming centers, which provide services primarily to immigrant communities. Of that money, $18 million will be used for housing and utility assistance while $4.5 million will go toward employment and job training services and $4 million will be used to provide health care education, the administration said in a release. The rest will be used for multilingual outreach and technical assistance. “We know that using personal information to apply for government services can bring additional stress to our immigrant communities, particularly in this climate, where the current president seeks to undermine one of the

greatest strengths of our country, our new immigrants,” Pritzker said. “So for this program, our welcoming centers will work directly with the families and neighborhoods who already know and trust them, ensuring that those most in need will be able to stay in their homes without fear of federal government interference.” The $30 million is being distributed through the Department of Human Services with money appropriated in the current fiscal year’s budget. In addition to the $30 million in state money, the governor’s office said, IDHS received another $30 in federal funds this year for immigrant-related services. That includes $10 million to connect immigrants with critical services and Continued on page 11

Bishop Noll Institute’s STREAM Lab Receives National Recognition

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Two thousand years ago, the Celts lit bonfires and wore costumes every October 31. They did it to ward off spirits. On this night, earth passed from the realm of life and abundance into the barren realm of cold, darkness and death. On this night, the boundary between the living and the dead thinned, allowing the spirits of the dead to return to earth. About the same time, a baby was born in the opposite corner of the Roman Empire. He lived, died and rose to conquer death for us. The message of his birth, life, death, resurrection, reign and return has transformed how millions around the globe view and experience death. My thoughts drift to a granite stone in a country cemetery. I first stood there as a boy when my grandfather was laid to rest. Years later, I returned to that spot with my grandmother. She had these words etched in granite:

“Jesus lives. And we live with him.” My grandparents knew that Christ had fully paid for all their sins with his precious blood. He had forgiven them to live for him and with him forever. Today, they are joyfilled in Christ’s presence. Their lifeless bodies, however, lie in the ground. When Jesus returns, the bodies of all who belong to him will rise; new, improved and immortal for life in Creation 2.0. But this is only true of you if you ask Christ to forgive and receive you into God’s family. This is only true if you entrust yourself to the care and control of Jesus. As you “trick or treat” this year, you might walk through yards with faux corpses emerging from fake graves. Remember: Jesus really rose from the grave! He lives! Will you live with him? Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org The Bishop Noll STREAM Lab, designed by the Wightman architecture firm, received an Award of Excellence from Learning by Design magazine, selected from more than 55 projects from around the country. The lab includes a learning studio and design lab, with flexible seating allowing students to work collaboratively; a makerspace for more hands-on work and creating prototypes based on original designs; and a prototype studio to build models and use larger equipment to build final products for display.

The architecture and design company that designed Bishop Noll Institute’s new STREAM Lab has received an Award of Excellence from Learning by Design magazine for the project. The lab, which opened last year, was selected in the top 12 of more than 55 submitted projects from around the country. Bishop Noll Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick and a team of Bishop Noll teachers and students known as the STREAM Team envisioned the state-of-the-art lab as a way to utilize the large space in the school’s former natatorium. The lab design by architects from Wightman, located in Benton Harbor, Mich., was among four Honorable Mention Award winners named by the magazine. The design was human-centered in exploring what teachers and students would be able to do in the new space that they could not do before in the Project Lead the Way STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs, said lead architect Gregory Monberg, the son of a Bishop Noll alum. “There are a lot of great features in the STREAM Lab including dedicated spaces for small group work, instruction, design, prototyping and testing,” Monberg said. “The spiral stair connecting to the old spectator seating area provides an easy connection between the labs and breakout areas, which can be supervised from one space without students having to go out into the corridor. The makerspace and prototyping labs especially allow students to build, test, and tinker with the projects they design in a way that wasn’t possible in the previous spaces available.” The lab design is STEM coming to life, said Pastrick. Bishop Noll currently runs four courses out of the STREAM Lab space and it is utilized by more than 160 students each day, she said. For example, while computer programming meets in the mezzanine, an engineering course takes place downstairs. “It has been fruitful because it’s meeting all the educational needs we had for our kids and is doing so in a functional and fluid way,” Pastrick said. “Even with COVID, we have been able to implement multiple sections and social distance students thanks to the size of the lab. We’ve had to be more creative, but it still functions.” The STREAM Team worked together to develop each area of the lab, Pastrick said, and its success is a testament to the team’s research and time they put into mindfully crafting the new space.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: You show many houses during the year. Any haunted stories to share at this spooky time of year? Answer: There is a story from a Real Estate agent who was showing an old home in a historic area of Galena, IL. “The home was miles from my usual market area, but my clients really wanted to view it, so I agreed. “We entered the living room, opened the coat closet and found a scribbled note: ‘Do not buy this house, it is haunted by 2 ghosts, 2 women who hate men. Property was built on a graveyard back in 1875. Please do not acquire if U R married. Awful things will happen to you.’ “The three of us all laughed as we read it thinking some kid wrote it there to be funny. “I walked into the kitchen to turn on some lights and open the curtains while my clients were checking out the bathroom. The yard was large, with leaves blowing across it, like a storm was coming soon. “My clients called me into the dining room to ask some questions. Shortly, my clients headed to the kitchen. As we entered the kitchen, chills ran up and down my spine. The kitchen curtains that I just opened to look onto the yard were closed. Did I close them after looking onto the

yard? I did not, because I wanted them to see the yard view from the kitchen. “As we went into one of the bedrooms, the bed was made, but there was an impression on the blanket and pillow covering the bed as if someone had been laying there. My clients wanted to leave, they said the house was too creepy for them. “As we stood in front of the house talking, I looked at the small front window of the attic. I don’t know if my mind was playing tricks with me, but I could swear I saw the likeness of 2 people looking out at us. “I did not mention this to the buyers. We got out of there and I never told anyone of our experience. “Many weeks later, I noticed the home was in sale-pending status. Later, I found out that the home was bought to be used as a museum for the Historical Society.” Thinking about selling? Give us a call. Even if your house is haunted! Bishop Noll senior Alejandra Castellanos, a STREAM Team member, said she loves working in the lab she helped design. “The large open space makes it easy to work in and gives us access to the equipment and materials we need when completing projects. I always knew that the lab was going to come out great - it’s a breath of fresh air that helps modernize the school but I have to say it really did come out even better then I imagined. As soon as students walk in the room, they feel excited to get to work, promoting productivity, creativity and innovation.” The Fall 2020 Awards of Excellence edition features a host of recently completed education facilities from across the United States. Learning spaces range from early childhood and elementary school environments to middle schools, high schools, specialized education and institutions of higher education. Projects were juried on innovation; incorporation of sustainable construction and operational features; appropriate use and application of interior design elements; floorplans and physical space design that enhance Next Generation Learning pedagogies; good planning and functional design strategies; and meeting needs of communities they serve. Twelve well-designed spaces were bestowed top awards. Four projects were awarded Grand Prize awards, four were designated with Citation of Excellence awards, and four Honorable Mention awards. A panel of four peer reviewed, scored and debated the merits of all the submissions. Bishop Noll continues to be an educational beacon for the Region as it lights the way in the STEM arena, adding “R” for religion and “A” for the arts as the only fully integrated high school STREAM program in northern Indiana. At least one of every three jobs now requires STREAM skills, and student mastery of STREAM disciplines correlates to college success. Bishop Noll unveiled its $1.45 million STREAM Lab, located in the Whelan Innovation Center, last year. Students study science, technology, engineering and math with art and religion components in the lab, which was constructed with funds from the school’s Ignite & Inspire capital campaign and some assistance from the Diocese of Gary. For information on how to enroll at Bishop Noll, please email Director of Admissions Jeff Stur at jstur@bishopnoll.org.

Financial Advice Column

Caregivers Must Also Care (Financially) for Themselves SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN If you’re a caregiver, possibly for a loved one dealing with an illness such as Alzheimer’s disease, you’re probably already facing some significant emotional and physical challenges – so you don’t need any financial ones as well. Yet, they are difficult to avoid. What steps can you take to deal with them? First of all, you may be interested in knowing the scale of the problem. Consider these numbers from the Alzheimer’s Association: About 5.8 million Americans ages 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and in 2019, caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementias contributed more than 18 billion hours of unpaid care – worth about $244 billion in services. Furthermore, about two-thirds of caregivers are women, and one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters. But whatever your gender or relationship to the individuals for whom you’re providing care, you can take some steps to protect your own financial future. Here are a few suggestions: Evaluate your employment options. If you have to take time away from work – or even leave employment altogether – to be a caregiver, you will lose not only income but also the opportunity to contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. But you may have some options, such as working remotely, or at least working part time. Either arrangement can give you flexibility in juggling your employment with your caregiving responsibilities. Explore payment possibilities for caregiving. Depending on your circumstances, and those of the loved ones for whom you’re providing care, you might be able to work out an arrangement in which you can get paid something for your

services. And as long as you are earning income, you can contribute to an IRA to keep building resources for your own retirement. Protect your financial interests – and those of your loved ones. You may well want to discuss legal matters with the individual for whom you are a caregiver before Alzheimer’s robs them of the ability to think clearly. It may be beneficial to work with a legal professional to establish a financial power of attorney – a document that names someone to make financial decisions and pay bills when the person with Alzheimer’s no longer can. And whether you or someone else has financial power of attorney, the very existence of this document may help you avoid getting your personal finances entangled with those of the individual for whom you’re caring. Keep making the right financial moves. As long as you’re successful at keeping your own finances separate from those of your loved one, you may be able to continue making the financial moves that can help you make progress toward your own goals. For example, avoid taking on more debts than you can handle. Also, try to maintain an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account. Of course, these tasks will be much easier if you can maintain some type of employment or get paid for your caregiving services. There’s nothing easy about being a caregiver. But by making the right moves, you may be able, at the least, to reduce your potential financial burden and brighten your outlook.
