Two Cook County south suburban residents were honored for their commitment to the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener (MG) program. Phyllis Warsen of Lansing, IL was awarded State Outstanding Master Gardener and Carmen Holmes of Harvey, IL was awarded Master Gardener Sustained Excellence. “The MG program wouldn’t be what it is today without volunteers like Carmen and Phyllis,” said Nancy Kreith, a Cook County Extension educator in horticulture. “They are instrumental in planning and advising various community gardens, and more importantly, they have deep roots in their own neighborhoods helping us make connections with locals.” Award winners were presented with yard signs at Sand Ridge Nature Center, a Forest Preserves of Cook County site in South Holland, IL. Both Warsen and Holmes dedicate their time on a weekly basis to help restore and maintain native gardens at Sand Ridge.

Warsen works beyond the nature center gardens, however, as she helps restore the forest land by removing invasive species. She is a natural teacher and applies her knowledge to assist school garden programs at Willow and Reavis schools and community gardens in the Lansing area. Besides volunteering at Sand Ridge, Holmes works with schools and community gardens in Harvey along with many schools outside of her neighborhood. She makes it her mission to teach residents of all ages about the importance of plants, as well as how support healthy ecosystems and incorporate healthy foods into their diets. “We live in an amazing abundant ecosystem that is responsible for supporting all life,” said Holmes. “Learning and sharing knowledge of how to be one with nature for our wellbeing and providing substance for our bodies which come from the earth is what volunteering as a Master Gardener

has taught me. Helping communities and families find the joy is seeing things grow is what I enjoy most about being a part of this wonderful group.” “I have learned so much about gardening from the expertise of other volunteers,” said Warsen. “The lively exchange of ideas about plants and good food is stimulating! Helping young children discover the joy and excitement of digging in the dirt and watching the seeds they planted grow into food they can eat is a gift!” “Working with Carmen and Phyllis over the years has been an amazing experience,” said Stephen DeFalco, Sand Ridge Nature Center Director. “Their passion is contagious and their eagerness to share their knowledge, mentor newer volunteers, help with public programs, and help our staff sets them apart.” To learn more about the Master Gardener training and volunteer certification program please contact Nancy Kreith at kreith@Illinois.edu.

This world is not the way its supposed to be. But Jesus came to right all that is wrong in our world. Beginning with us. We are rightly passionate about what’s wrong outside us. But Jesus also shows us what’s wrong inside us: our sin and selfrighteous attitudes, our lack of love and forgiveness. Let’s go to the cross. There, we hear our Father say, “I forgive you. I accept you as righteous in Christ. I will right all that is wrong inside you. Now partner with me to right what is wrong outside you.”

As we do, remember: we’re not home yet. We are pilgrim people, yearning, Looking for our perfect home. How we long for Christ, returning To establish his shalom. So, as we work and wait, let’s pray: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. The Love of Christ is Always the Answer PASTOR PETE TASSIO, THE KING’S COMMUNITY CHURCH In the last few months we have seen and heard some things which have shaken our nation—injustice, hatred, rebellion, and lawlessness. And although none of these things mentioned are new to mankind, it doesn’t negate the hurt and pain they have caused to so many presently. The world can only approach these matters in a certain way. It can only utilize human methods and natural means to deal with the adversity and turmoil of man’s failure. But according to God’s Word we’re told, “Can anything separate us from the love Christ has for us? Can trouble or problems or sufferings or hunger or danger or violent death? No! In all these things we are completely victorious through God who loves us.” When the apostle Paul spoke of these problems he certainly understood their effects upon people. He was not trying

to belittle their destructive ability or condone the behavior of those who caused them. Rather, what Paul brings forth here in these verses is to provide the solution for God’s people. The solution to all these problems is the love of Christ. Whatever your special situation or circumstance may be, the “love of Christ” is always the answer. The Lord Jesus said we are not to be worried or anxious about the things of this life, nor to be fretful about tomorrow. Instead we are told to trust in God who knows what we need and what we are facing each day. He tells us to seek Him first and what He wants, and then all of our other needs will be met as well. More than ever, now is the time to fix our attention on God, and expect His divine peace and abundant supply to be present in our lives every day.

I love to grow a garden and I am sorry to see the season is over for now. I enjoy preparing the ground and planting in anticipation of what will grow. I like watering, fertilizing, and especially being able to walk outside and pick fresh vegetables for dinner. The not-as-fun part is weeding to ensure the greenery I want is getting access to sunshine and water and not being crowded out. Different times of the season have different jobs but I must always keep an eye on it. I see this most clearly when we go on vacation for a couple weeks and come back to find the weeds taller than the vegetable plants!! I find the gardening analogy also works for people’s finances. They put so much effort into preparing their finances upfront that they forget to keep an eye on how changing circumstances can soon run them into trouble. Having a productive garden means putting in a few hours regularly and the same is true for healthy finances. My advice is to set aside a day of the month where you take an hour to look through your finances and make adjustments. You might say you don’t have time but then consider how many hours you spend on your favorite hobby, sport or just watching Netflix. If you are the average American, stats show t.v. consumption alone could total 6 days per month! I confess that I do not enjoy reviewing my own finances but am

motivated to do it to avoid running into trouble. Maybe it’s time for financial weeding. This could be looking through receipts and spending and looking for wasteful areas of spending that are creeping in. It could be time to plant some seeds that might seem small now but as decisions could grow into fruitful trees through retirement plans or insurance payments. It could be time to do some pruning as you cut back on things that you no longer need or use so something new can grow! A healthy garden is the reward of regular maintenance. Of course, if your garden has become an overgrown jungle and you don’t know where to start, it may be time to reach out for help. Give me a call. A successful candidate has the ability to initiate, plan and implement all necessary routine maintenance services, daily work lists and checklists to ensure that maintenance goals are being accomplished. This position requires developing an annual maintenance plan and budget as well as the responsibility to maintain all appropriate records, agreements, contracts, proposals, reports, and expense summaries. An ideal candidate is involved with assisting and delegating staff needed as support for recreational activities and special events. The maintenance division includes the maintenance of the aquatic center, therefor a successful candidate must be able to coordinate maintenance of pool and whirlpool including cleaning, temperature checks, and water chemistry testing as well as supervise full time and part time maintenance staff including, staff meetings, hiring, scheduling, work duty lists, and time sheets. A successful candidate must assist in moving the Village forward through modeling behavior that is consistent with our Good to Great leadership philosophy, and the overall mission and vision as public servants. They must have the ability to interact effectively with the public, department leadership, fellow employees and village officials; preserve the integrity of our organization by making decisions that are in the best interests of the organization; and perform all job duties in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Village of South Holland with high ethical standards and behaviors.

WOODROW WILCOX On October 14, 2020, I helped a senior citizen client from Schererville, Indiana. He got a bill from a medical firm for $663. The only reason that he got the bill was because Medicare failed to forward claim information to his Medicare supplement insurance company. This happens so often. In past articles, I have shared my calculations for my estimate that this one repeating failure of the Medicare system costs senior citizens over one billion dollars per year in false medical bills. If seniors don’t have anyone to help them catch and correct Medicare’s repeating mistake, they end up being hounded to pay a medical bill that would have been paid by their secondary insurer if Medicare had done its job correctly. It was largely because of this problem that Medicare keeps causing seniors that I wrote the book Solving Medicare Problem$.

I wanted to teach other people how I help the senior citizen clients of our insurance agency. I have saved the clients of our agency over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. To help the client in this case, I sent a pleasant letter to the medical firm to explain the problem was caused by Medicare and not the patient. Then, I asked the firm to send certain essential claim information directly to our client’s insurance company. That will solve the problem and save our client $663. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to our agency? Sellers: You Can Go From “Less” To “Yes” MIKE BUDER The painful truth is, sellers who do not price their property realistically are the most likely targets of lowball offers. That is if they even get traffic through the front door to begin with. In today’s market, buyers are more prone to make lower offers than usual on the listings that are priced too high. Listings that don’t sell usually require price reductions, which in turn often mean ultimately accepting an offer lower than you could have received by pricing aggressively from day one. Since selling your home can be such an emotional and subjective experience, it’s easy to understand why you’d be reluctant to counter an offer below your asking price. But rather than feel insulted, try to see it as the beginning of a dialogue that could ultimately produce a sale. If you feel any of the terms or conditions of the offer are unacceptable, ask your agent to present a counter offer. Sometimes buyers and sellers don’t really know beforehand what price they’ll accept until they’ve begun the negotiations. For example, a buyer might agree to a higher price than planned if interest rates suddenly drop. I have often heard sellers say, “I should have worked more with that last buyer I had.” This is usually said 2 or 3 months later, while they are in the process of adjusting their asking price. If you’ve received a lower than expected offer, but the buyers have proven their qualifications and commitment by securing a loan pre-approval, you have grounds for serious consideration. Avoid Financial Mistakes During Retirement SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN By the time you retire, you’ve learned a lot about all sorts of things, helping you avoid some of the mistakes you made earlier in life. However, you may still be susceptible to financial missteps specifically related to your retirement years. How can you dodge these errors? Consider these suggestions: Manage your withdrawal rate carefully. You will likely need to tap into your retirement accounts—your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. But you should establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation. By withdrawing too much each year, especially in the early years of your retirement, you risk outliving your resources. You may want to consult with a financial professional to determine the withdrawal amount that’s right for you. (Keep in mind, though, that once you turn 72, you will be required to take out at least a certain amount each year—based on your age and account balance—from your traditional IRA and 401(k) or similar plan.) Don’t underestimate health care costs. Once you turn 65, you will be eligible for Medicare, but you may still need a Medicare supplement plan and will probably also incur other expenses. In fact, A healthy 65-year-old couple who retired in 2019 will need nearly $390,000 over their remaining years just to pay for health care, according to HealthView Services, which produces health-care cost projection software. Other estimates show different amounts, but they all amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, when calculating your expenses during your retirement years, reserve a big space for health care. Don’t take Social Security too early. You can start receiving monthly Social Security checks when you reach age 62, but your payments will generally be significantly larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will probably be between 66 and 67. (The size of your payments will “max out” at age 70.) Of course, if you need the money at 62, you may have to take it, but if you believe you have longevity working in your favor, and you can afford to wait, you may be better off by delaying Social Security as long as possible. Don’t invest too conservatively. Once you’re retired, you might think that you should take as few chances as possible with your investments—after all, you simply have less time for them to bounce back from a downturn than you did during your working years. Nonetheless, it’s important to own a reasonable percentage of growthoriented investments to help keep you ahead of inflation. Even at a low rate, which we’ve experience recently, inflation can erode your purchasing power over time. Don’t be more generous than you can afford. If you have grown children who need financial help, or grandchildren heading to college someday, you’d no doubt like to do whatever you can to provide assistance. However, the hard truth is they simply have more time than you do to find workable financial solutions, whereas if you deplete your funds through your generosity, you could put yourself in a precarious position. So, be as giving as you can afford—but don’t go beyond that. By preserving your financial independence, you’ll end up benefiting your family, as well. Retirement can be a wonderful time of your life—and you may enjoy it more by doing what you can to avoid costly financial mistakes. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced on October 14, 2020 that a new email service is available to Illinoisans who need information on reinstating driving privileges, obtaining driving relief or scheduling an administrative hearing. Individuals who have a driver’s license suspension or revocation or any other loss of driving privileges can send an email to adminhearings@ilsos.gov. “We are providing this service to accommodate the public and help them obtain administrative hearing services and avoid lines at Driver Services facilities,” said Secretary White. “We are maintaining the same high standards for reinstating driving

and mailed, emailed or hand-delivered to the local county office. Aylesworth encouraged voters to return their mail-in ballots as quickly as possible. Polling places statewide will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. Instagram Fisher-Price® Toy Museum is Nostalgic Fun

October 15, 2020 marked the grand opening of the Fisher-Price Toy Museum, a virtual museum designed to celebrate the brand’s 90-year legacy. This first-of-its-kind virtual experience, which will be hosted on Instagram, enables visitors to relive their favorite toys through a curated exhibition. “The Fisher-Price Toy Museum was inspired by the idea that, whether you were born in the 1950s, 1980s or 2000s, everyone has a memory of their favorite childhood toy, and many of those are from Fisher-Price,” said Chuck Scothon, SVP and Global Head of Infant and Preschool at Mattel, which owns Fisher-Price. “The intent of this museum is to take visitors back to their unique childhood experiences, and give them the opportunity to relive their

Burnet Title reports that in June, the housing market activity jumped 20.7% from the previous month—the largest increase ever recorded in a single month. Here are a few ideas that could sweeten and improve your offer, so it looks appealing to sellers. • Shop for your interest rate, but make sure you get a preapproval from your Realtor’s preferred lender and make sure the Realtor informs the Listing agent of this. Sellers are worried that an unknown lender may not deliver what they said they could in their preapproval. Your Realtor’s preferred lender is that because of successful transactions in the past. • Ask your Realtor’s preferred lender what you need to do to get your loan approved quicker so you can offer the sellers a faster close. • Consider offering a larger earnest

money deposit. This shows the seller you are serious, and you want their home. • If you really want this home, make your offer above list price, especially if you know you are up against other offers. Be sure to check with your lender to ensure you qualify for a higher home price. • Sweeten the deal. Maybe the sellers need to stay a few days in the home after closing because of movers or other reasons. Allow the sellers to stay in the home for a while after closing with no fees. The cost to you on this sweet offer is minimal. • Include a personal letter with the offer. Tell them about your family. Tell them why you love their home, etc. Remember, sellers may have lived there for many years and may have raised their family in that home.
