in Kankakee, then transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he died at 10:04pm.

A procession of fire engines traveled from Northwestern Memorial to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday morning, October 2, in Cunningham’s honor.

Cunningham has been a member of the South Holland Fire Department since 2011. He started as a part-time Firefighter, and began serving full time in 2018. He also served in the Illinois Army National Guard since 2012.

He lived in Thornton, Illinois, with his fiancée, and they were expecting a child. He was 29 years old. His mother, Rosemary Cunningham, is a Trustee for the Village of Thornton.

Cunningham attended Thornwood High School in South Holland, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete. He received an Associate Degree of Fire Science at Prairie State College, then later trained in Poland to become a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialist for the Illinois Army National Guard. In October 2018 he received a Gold Seal from the South Cook County EMS Medical Director for his work in saving a patient on an EMS call.

“Dylan was a beloved member of our team,” said South Holland Fire Chief Brian Kolosh. “He was dedicated, loyal, hard-working, and also a lot of fun to be around. We are devastated by this loss and are grieving with Dylan’s family.”

South Holland Mayor Don De Graff said, “He was a focused and mature young man who was a great Village employee.

Our Village board and administration recognize the quality of his character and the special person he was. He represented so well who we are as a village. We will significantly miss his contributions going forward.”

J. Wynsma, Village Administrator for the Village of South Holland, said “We know you have many questions, and so do we. Our efforts will bring conclusions that we will share with you in the coming days.”

The South Holland Fire Department has received an outpouring of support from surrounding communities. The following fire departments have provided assistance: Calumet City, Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Glenwood, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Lansing, Markham, Riverdale, and Thornton.

Many other departments throughout the region held processionals in Cunningham’s honor.

The Village asks that members of the public keep the Cunningham family in their thoughts and prayers, and please respect their privacy during this difficult time.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We signed a contract to sell our home contingent on the buyer getting a loan approved and closing by a given date. The buyer did not get the loan and the deal was off. We started showing the house again, but have now found out that the buyers got financing through a different bank and they can close by the original deadline. Are we still obligated to close or can we change the contract to better ourselves?

Answer: Wait a second. Go back to the part about the “deal was off.” Did the buyers agree that the transaction was finished?

Did they get their earnest money back? If so, the contract is null and void.

If they simply had a financial bump in

the road—a delay—and the contract wasn’t nullified, that’s different. Their offer must have been fair and acceptable—otherwise you would not have had a contract.

The offer from the buyers may be the best you’ll get. Instead of seeking advantage from their difficulty, congratulate them for working to meet the terms of the agreement and enjoy your check at closing!

Did you watch the presidential debate last Tuesday night? One of my children commented that what she witnessed was the opposite of how we teach them to respect and relate to others.

Yes. It was.

Still, on Tuesday, November 3, we will exercise our constitutional right and responsibility to elect those who govern us. Some will vote in person. Others will vote by mail.

Those who lead and how they lead—it matters. The beliefs and ideas that direct them—it matters. How they address the pressing issues of our times—it matters.

Yet, when all is said and done, where do we anchor our hope?

“Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground.

On that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, the Maker of heaven and earth,

the sea, and everything in them—the LORD, who remains faithful forever.”

(Psalm 146:3-6, NIV84) Maybe this strikes you as cliché. But it is true. The earliest followers of Jesus had neither voice nor vote in Roman politics. Yet they proclaimed, “Christ is Lord!” They believed and lived it. They proclaimed a Savior who died to forgive and free us to love him and others. This gospel empowered them to break down racial barriers, elevate women, rescue abandoned babies, care for the poor, speak truth to power, forgive their enemies, and model a life-giving blueprint for sexuality, family, and community.

None of this depended on who was Caesar at the moment. Their commitment to gospel-centered reconciliation, mercy and justice left an enduring mark on our world, long after Rome crumbled into dust.

Illinois Signs Monarch Action Different Types of Debt Options Plan to Protect Pollinators Mom On Money

NANCY ZEKVELD Overcoming debt can feel hopeless, but I say there is always hope! Here are some options: One option is debt consolidation.

This involves borrowing a new line of credit to fold in all your other debts.

This can simplify your situation as it requires just one payment that may be lower than you previously paid as it is spread over a longer period of time. A downside is that you may be paying more in total if there is added interest.

Some lenders secure the debt against property you own which can make previously unsecured debt more risky if you default again. In this case carefully consider how you will be able to manage payments on the new loan if you were not able to manage previous payments.

Another related option might be refinancing with your existing lender.

Can they extend the payment term to make monthly payments cheaper? They may be able to offer temporary pause in payment for short term issues you may be facing.

A more complicated route is debt settlement. This is the process of negotiating down the debt balance in order to pay a percentage of the debt to the creditor. This can be done with or without external help. Many companies who do this charge large fees, creditors can take court action during the process, it doesn’t guarantee the clearing of debts and it can affect your credit rating. Please be careful with this!

Bankruptcy is another option that

can seem scary but for many is the right route. It is the process of eliminating debts through the legal system. Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 are bankruptcy options available to consumers filing on personal debts. Some debts aren’t included in the process so it’s important to get good advice before you dive in.

Finally, a Debt Management Plan (DMP) can be right for you. By negotiating with creditors a plan is put together to pay your debts with reduced interest and charges over a 60 month or less period. This can actually improve your credit score.

So what is right for you? My advice is to seek credit counseling first. Credit counseling is a recognized industry that gives impartial advice on your financial situation and explains each route available to you. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) Thursday solidified their commitment to protecting monarch butterflies and other pollinators by signing the Illinois Monarch Action Plan at Conservation World on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

Tasked with bolstering the population of monarchs and other pollinators by protecting habitat and adding food sources, the project brings together public agencies, private organizations, and residents of the state in a collaborative and coordinated effort to ensure the survival and successful migration of monarchs.

“Though small, pollinators play an extremely important role in our survival here in Illinois and the world,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan. “This signing not only moves us as a state from plan to action, but also reaffirms our commitment as

public servants to doing our part in ensuring pollinators’ survival.”

As part of a regional effort to add 1.3 billion stems of new milkweed to the central U.S. to support migrating monarchs, Illinois is tasked with adding 150,000,000 stems of new milkweed embedded in diverse nectar sources by 2038. As one of the largest landowners in the state, IDOT is in a unique position to contribute resources to this goal.

“We hold a special commitment at IDOT for the environment and the role pollinators play in the Illinois ecosystem and economy,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “From mowing schedules and restricting the use of pesticides to planting only certain species along our roadsides, IDOT has embraced many changes in policies and practices over the years to protect pollinators.

This plan only serves to strengthen those efforts going forward.”

Prior to the project’s beginning in October 2016, efforts to protect pollinators already were in place at state agencies and organizations. Those plans, as well as new initiatives, have been included in the state’s action plan to maximize efforts.

“Illinois leads the nation in soybean production and is number two in corn, so our state’s farmers are well aware of the importance of pollinators,” said IDOA Acting Director Jerry Costello II. “Understanding their importance to all Illinois crops, IDOA has executed a multi-year pollinator habitat establishment at our fairgrounds in Springfield and DuQuoin. This multi-year plan, which is in its second year, will convert approximately 25-30 acres of land when fully completed.”

District 151: A Circle of Trust Sputnik: How a Soviet Satellite Is Needed for This School Year Began the Space Race DR. JERALD MCNAIR, PRINCIPAL DISTRICT 151 As many schools have been left to teach students remotely, at least for the start of the school year, because of the pandemic, there are aspects and fundamental disadvantages that exist. Technical problems, including but not limited to wifi issues at times exist.

Parents have been left to rearrange their work schedules. Grandparents are being relied upon more now than ever before.

Notwithstanding these obstacles, along with dozens of other problems, it’s a matter of necessity that we all resist the urge to criticize how we as educators, parents, and students are responding to Covid-19, while we work to make every effort to educate students. We have all heard the following phrase: “These are unprecedented times.” While we utter this statement rather effortless, the meaning behind it can be rather complex. The unfortunate realities of Covid-19 is wrought with emotional pitfalls, inconsistent public polices, cultural differences, along with class and racial inequities. The phrase, “We are in this together,” continues to be tested daily, as we debate, argue, and grapple with wearing face mask and following social distancing guidelines.

As we continue to discuss, plan, and dialogue about how schools should move forward, we must all work together and agree to this basic belief: Educating students is our number one priority, while keeping all of those involved safe and healthy. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of this virus, it makes this quite difficult at times.

Yet, complexity does not mean educators, parents, and administrators should be contemptuous while working on a suitable plan, one that will not satisfy everyone. The phrase, “circle of trust,” is quite apropos.

Research shows that parents often feel good about their local school for various reasons.

In fact, parents often rely on their child’s teacher for advice, on a number of matters. I have seen parents confide in teachers about their home life, and the obstacles that exist that are hindering their child from learning.

I and my Assistant Principal, Mrs. Rush, marvel at how our teachers embrace these conversations. Nevertheless, we are in an era where cynicism is rampant. Simply put, many people don’t trust institutions, government, even their neighbors, in some respects. Yet, we all need and depend on each other. This level of dependency couldn’t be more evident than

now, as schools work to engage and teach students remotely. In an article written by Paul E. Peterson titled, What Parents Thinks About Their Public Schools, it illustrates that the level of dependency that parents have for their local schools is filled with good intentions and beneficial to all involved. In fact, overwhelmingly parents give schools in their community a mark of A or B. During this unique time in history, it’s important that parents continue to believe that schools are doing everything they can to meet the needs of their students, while trying to keep everyone safe and healthy that work in schools. It’s also important that students know their teachers love and value them.

Let me close by offering comforting words to students, parents, and educators: A word to students: We know in person learning is what many of you all want and deserve. Unfortunately, as you will learn in life, somethings you simply cannot control.

This virus has caused enough heartache and destruction to many lives and families. For many communities having students come into school buildings is simply not safe right now. Please be patient, understanding, and assured we are going to do our best to provide a first-rate education to you.

A word for parents: Please understand that teachers and administrators are operating in an environment where a blue print is not available. We are making decisions on matters that we cannot always control, including but not limited to technology availability that may be coming from other areas of the world, decisions made by state and federal leaders that we must follow, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines that work to put the health and safety of all of us first.

A word for our educators: Please be patient with students and parents. Parents are being asked to adjust their work schedules, help teach a curriculum and a subject matter they may not be comfortable with. At the same time, students are trying to adjust to learning exclusively from home, where their friends are not present, where they can’t socialize and behave as typical kids, and not to mention technology struggles they may have.

As we move forward, begin the school year with an open mind, a shared feeling of trust, and a belief that we are all going to do our best during this very difficult time, as we fight this unapologetic virus called Covid-19.

Tom Emery It was a round metal object the size of a beach ball, and only weighed 183.9 pounds.

Yet it managed to throw a nervous world into a panic.

Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, was thrust into space by the Soviet Union on Oct. 4, 1957 and marked the beginning of the space race. It was also a landmark in the Cold War between the United States and the Soviets.

The launch, just months after Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev’s declaration that “we will bury you,” sent the United States into “near hysteria” in the words of one writer and “political pandemonium” in the words of another.

Sputnik was designed to correspond with the International Geophysical Year, set by the International Council of Scientific Unions in 1952 to last from July 1, 1957 to Dec. 31, 1958. In 1955, the U.S. had announced plans for its own satellite.

The Soviets, however, beat the Americans to the punch, as they repeatedly did in the early years of the space race. At 10:29 p.m.

Moscow time, the U.S.S.R. sent Sputnik, from the Russian word for “satellite,” from a launch base in the Kazakh Republic.

Sputnik, which resembled a silver metal ball with four spindly legs, was 22.8 inches in diameter and required 96 minutes to orbit the Earth at 17,956 miles per hour. On an elliptical path, Sputnik passed within 134 miles of Earth, and could be seen from the ground at times with the naked eye. It could also be heard, as its constant beeping sound could be picked up with proper equipment.

The launch rattled many Americans, fearful of the impact of the satellite on nuclear tensions with the Soviets and concerned that the U.S. was behind so quickly in the space movement. NBC termed the launch “the most important story of the century,” adding that the beeping of Sputnik was a “sound that forevermore separates the old from the new.”

A later commentator declared that “no event since Pearl Harbor set off such repercussions in public life.” President Dwight David Eisenhower did not reference Sputnik until a news conference on October 9, when he termed Sputnik meaningless.

The Soviets followed the launch with Sputnik II on November 3, which had a

much heavier payload, including a dog named Laika.

Some modern writers point to a technological revolution sparked by Sputnik that reaches far beyond the space race, and even claim that the Internet has its roots in the applied research that arose from the Sputnik crisis. Others also write that “frivolities” of American culture, such as automobile tail fins, were doomed by Sputnik, as many called for a refocusing of engineering and design talents.

That, of course, is a matter of debate, but there is no argument that the space race took flight with the launch of Sputnik.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) opened shortly after, in 1958. By then, the Americans had launched their own satellite, Vanguard, in December 1957, which proved to be a colossal failure. The much-hyped Vanguard reached four feet off the ground, then crashed on the launch pad in flames.

Finally, the United States succeeded with the launch of Explorer I on Jan. 31, 1958.

That same month, as planned, Sputnik’s orbit had diminished, and the satellite burned up in Earth’s atmosphere.

The Soviets eventually scored a string of firsts in the space race, including the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, in April 1961 and the first woman, Valentina Tereshkova, in June 1963. The U.S.S.R. also launched the first three-person orbital flight in October 1964 and the first spacewalk the next March.

However, the Americans earned the biggest prize, becoming the first to successfully land a mission on the moon.

Twelve American astronauts walked on the moon in six landings between 1969-72, while no Soviet cosmonaut ever stepped on the lunar surface.

The primitive Sputnik was the first of thousands of satellite launches that followed. In the first twenty-five years after Sputnik, some 2,000 satellites from twentyfour nations were sent into space, or one every 3.8 days.

In 1999, a reported 2,500 satellites, serving everything from telecommunications to weather prediction and crop growth to military navigation, were circling the Earth.

They Billed Medicare Three Times!

Lessons from Experienced Investors

WOODROW WILCOX One of our clients got a medical bill for $43.25 and wanted to know why. She brought the bill to one of our offices and that office copied documents and sent the copies to me.

On June 5, 2020, I wrote a polite letter to the medical firm that sent the bill. I told them what I had found when I checked with the insurance company. The claim had been paid according to the ruling of Medicare.

The medical firm’s bill did not make sense.

I asked them to review the matter because I suspected they had made an error.

Instead of responding with an answer to my letter, they billed our client again. On September 15, 2020, I made phone calls with the client to the medical firm, her Medicare supplement insurance company, and Medicare. In those phone calls, I learned that the medical firm had filed the claim with Medicare three times for the same medical services. First, they filed the claim incorrectly.

Then, they filed a corrected claim. Then, they refiled the corrected claim. That mistake

resulted in a false bill to our client for $43.25.

I brought this to the attention of the billing people at the medical firm. They phoned me to let me know that I was correct and that they were cancelling the $43.25 bill to our client.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency has built a reputation for “going the extra mile” to help our clients with medical bill problems like this. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does help clients? Our agency does.

Consider some of the lessons you might learn from experienced investors: Regulate your emotions. In the investment world, there’s always something coming at us that could sound scary: political flashpoints, economic news, and even those oncein-a-generation occurrences, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. But older people may take these events in stride; in fact, baby boomers and members of the Silent Generation (born between 1925 and 1945) are coping better emotionally with the impacts of COVID-19 than younger age cohorts, according to the 2020 Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. And by keeping control of your emotions, you may be less likely to make moves such as selling quality investments with good fundamentals just because their prices have fallen in the midst of an overall market decline.

Learn from experience. By definition, the older we get, the more experiences we will have. And most people do indeed learn from experience. Investors, too, benefit from having seen and done things before.

Did you chase a “hot” stock only to have found it cooled off before you bought it?

Did you buy too many of the same type of investments, only to see your portfolio take a bigger hit during a downturn than it would have if you had diversified? In the investment arena, as in most walks of life, patterns emerge, and once you learn to recognize them, you can learn from past mistakes.

Essential Function:

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Recreational Services, the Supervisor of Facility Maintenance is responsible for independently conducting the day to day operational management and implementation of all assignments pertaining to maintenance, housekeeping and overall cleaning for the Department of Recreational Services. This position involves the supervision, education and training of maintenance staff on proper maintenance and cleaning procedures. A successful candidate has the ability to initiate, plan and implement all necessary routine maintenance services, daily work lists and checklists to ensure that maintenance goals are being accomplished. This position requires developing an annual maintenance plan and budget as well as the responsibility to maintain all appropriate records, agreements, contracts, proposals, reports, and expense summaries. An ideal candidate is involved with assisting and delegating staff needed as support for recreational activities and special events. The maintenance division includes the maintenance of the aquatic center, therefor a successful candidate must be able to coordinate maintenance of pool and whirlpool including cleaning, temperature checks, and water chemistry testing as well as supervise full time and part time maintenance staff including, staff meetings, hiring, scheduling, work duty lists, and time sheets.

A successful candidate must assist in moving the Village forward through modeling behavior that is consistent with our Good to Great leadership philosophy, and the overall mission and vision as public servants. They must have the ability to interact effectively with the public, department leadership, fellow employees and village officials; preserve the integrity of our organization by making decisions that are in the best interests of the organization; and perform all job duties in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Village of South Holland with high ethical standards and behaviors.

Just consider how you react when the market declines sharply. Don’t go it alone. Some of us, when we’re young, have a tendency to think we have all the answers and don’t need much help in our endeavors. But age gives us the wisdom to recognize that, although we may have acquired much knowledge over the years, we can still use some help in specialized areas, such as creating a longterm investment strategy.

With the very exciting election season upon us, those sellers and soon-to-be sellers out there need to take a moment to think it over before they put out—or allow to be put out—a political sign in their front yard next to their “for sale” sign. I can speak from experience—real estate and politics don’t mix!

Now, don’t get me wrong…do exercise your right to support the candidate or political party that you want to win the election! Just don’t do it in the front yard of the house you are trying to sell. This has nothing to do with whom you support, why, or for how long. What this does have to do with is, do you want to do everything you can to sell your home?

While 100% may not be realistic, do not give any one person (it only takes one) a reason to walk away without giving your property fair consideration.
